Pearls achievements in 2015 Our research has demonstrated that the rates of preeclampsia has halved over the last decade, but that women who are still getting preeclampsia are prone to early delivery and seizures. Preeclampsia remains one of the most common complications or pregnancy and still causes a significant number of premature babies and poor outcomes for mothers. PEARLS researchers this year have shown that some of the target proteins that we have looked at are responsible for the high blood pressure and kidney protein leak that are typical of the condition. This is the first time that the proteins themselves have been deliberately found to be the cause of the high blood pressure and not an incidental finding. The laboratory team continues to explore ways that placentas can be measured to look at oxygen levels and other stress responses with the intention of developing better tests that can be used in early pregnancy to detect preeclampsia. This research won a National Science award in 2015 at the Australia and New Zealand Nephrology Society meeting. The clinical work of the team has shown a tendency for high blood pressure in later life that is not seen in women who had normal blood pressure in their pregnancy. This follows on from the ground breaking work last year which showed a link between snoring, interrupted breathing and high blood pressure leading to premature birth and preeclampsia. This work won an International Science prize in late 2014 and has been again presented at the World congress for Sleep in Korea in March 2015. Q&A
with Amanda Davidson, Chair of Pearls Preeclampsia Research Laboratories
1. What inspired you to start the charity ‘Pearls Preeclampsia Research Laboratories’? I had preeclampsia when I was pregnant with my son Harry, and after he was born I had a discussion with my doctors about the condition. It was only then that I realised how widespread and devastating preeclampsia is. I just saw that something needed to be done, so I set about doing it. The inspiration really came from my brilliant doctors, Annemarie Hennessy and Geoff Brieger.
2. F rom your own personal experience, what advice would you give women regarding pregnancy? Make sure that you go for your regular check ups and get your blood pressure checked. It could be high without you even knowing it as there are often no symptoms. For example I had never had high blood pressure in the past and I have had normal blood pressure since. Then listen to your doctors and do what they say. I can remember clearly the day that I was diagnosed with preeclampsia. I was a partner with a major law firm with a very busy practice and at week 30 I was told to immediately go home to bed and rest. I was in the middle of a huge mining case and it was very hard to let go of that and focus on me and the baby. Luckily I had and still have amazing clients that supported me through that time. Just do what your doctors say. Not everything in life is within your control.
3. If you could had one wish for Pearls, what would that be? My wish is that we can learn how to prevent preeclampsia. If we could do that, we would save literally millions of lives. The figures are alarming with 1 in 10 pregnancies in Australia affected, and even higher in other countries who do not have the level of obstetric care that we enjoy here in Australia. The effects of preeclampsia are devastating both for mothers and babies and are often not discussed. My second wish would be that women come out and talk about their experience with preeclampsia. With more awareness we can raise more money for our critical medical research. 4. Professor Annemarie Hennessy is an incredibly inspiring woman. All
the time and research she devotes to Pearls and the Heart Research institute is ground breaking. If you had one word to describe Professor Annemarie Hennessy, what would that be?
Brilliant. Annemarie is the most capable, intelligent and compassionate person I have ever known. It is wonderful to be able to work with her as well as her incredible team. Finding the cause of preeclampsia was her life’s work, and finding a way of converting her teams’ ground breaking research into a practical way of preventing preeclampsia from occurring in the future will remain her life’s work. I’ll be there along the way to help in whatever way I can. Annemarie literally saved my life and that of my gorgeous son Harry. It’s the least I can do. 4

‘Sandhills Wilcannia’ 2014 oil on board 60 x 60cm
Luke Sciberras is a leading landscape painter based in Hill End. Luke has had over 25 solo shows in the past 15 years. He was a finalist in this year’s Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW and has undertaken numerous residencies and artists expeditions with some of Australia’s leading artists including the ‘My Friend the Enemy’ Gallipoli expedition this year. Luke’s works are held in many private, public and corporate collections worldwide. As Sydney Morning Herald critic, John McDonald writes of Sciberras’ Hill End works, “While Sciberras’s paintings are always recognizable as landscapes, he simplifies forms, turns light and shadow into solid shapes. His works are not apocalyptic like Drysdale’s, they are lyrical, muted and understated. His paintings are not momentos of a vanished boom-town, but a celebration of a countryside returning to life.”

-Royal Hotels AustraliaWeekend for 2 at the Iconic Intercontinental Hotel Double Bay
Not only is the InterContinental in Double Bay Sydney’s newest five-star hotel, it’s also the only one outside the CBD. Breathing life back into a building with an impressive hospitality heritage, the hotel opened in November 2014 in the heart of one of Sydney’s prettiest harbourside suburbs. The multi-million dollar refurbishment has retained some of the original features, including the Italian marble floors and brass plated lifts, but overall the property looks and feels brand new. There are splashes of flamboyance in the lobby: an opulent gilded sofa and some bold artworks, but otherwise it’s a safe, contemporary makeover in a soothing palate of greys and charcoals. There’s an all-day lounge bar (Stillery) and an in-house restaurant (Stockroom) but the hotel’s crowning glory is a Miami-style rooftop pool and bar with sweeping harbour views.

Round of golf for 4 at NSW Golf Club
“....It is a great honour to be among the members who are lucky enough to play it....” Greg Norman Regarded as one of the top golf courses in Australia and currently rated number 34 in the world, NSW is a wonderful combination of undulating fairways, beautiful scenic vistas and a clubhouse which is a magnificent combination of traditional architecture and five star comfort. The NSW golf course is a links style championship course spectacularly located on the Pacific Ocean and on historic Botany Bay. Even when there is a gentle breeze prevailing the course will test the above average player with its tight fairways and testing greens.
*by arrangement
When the wind blows it gets tough! Should you lose a ball in the rough then don’t bother looking - just drop another ball and take your penalty. This golf course and club are steeped in history. It is a well known historical fact that Captain Cook and his crew found their first drinking water in a natural spring below where the 18th tee is located today. In short, this is more than just a golf course - it is an unforgettable golf and natural experience. To play golf at NSW Golf Club is to play golf how the game was intended to be played - at the complete mercy of Mother Nature and the golfer’s ability.

Any questions in relation to the auction should be directed to PEARLS. The following terms and conditions govern the sale of all the property offered (as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the auction):
1.
(a) PEARLS does not assume any risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity or the authorship of any property identified in this catalogue (that is, the identity of the creator or the period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any property is identified herein).
(b) All property is sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description and PEARLS does not make any representations or warranties of any kind or nature, expressed or implied, with respect to the property and in no event shall either of them be responsible for the correctness of any descriptions of property, nor be deemed to have made, any representations or warranties of physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, genuineness, attribution, authenticity or provenance of the property. No statement in the auction catalogue or other description made at the sale, in any sale invoice or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a representation or warranty.
(c) Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been repaired or restored.
(d)
2.
Any property may be withdrawn by PEARLS at any time before the actual sale.
3.
The lots will be auctioned in the order as determined by the auctioneer at the auction.
Property may be offered subject to reserves.
4. PEARLS reserves the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the sale records PEARLS shall be conclusive in all respects. 5. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the property, he may reject the same and withdraw the property from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance. 6. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof, (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price or such part as PEARLS may require. PEARLS will not release a lot to a successful buyer until payment of the total amount due has been made. After payment, the purchaser shall remove the Property from the location of the auction. If the property is not so removed, it may be sent by PEARLS at its discretion to storage for the account, risk and expense of the purchaser and such charges will then be added to the purchase price of the property. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to PEARLS by law including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, PEARLS at its option, may either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any shortfall between the original sale price and the price achieved upon resale, all other charges due hereunder and any incidental damages. 7. In the case of commission bids or bids transmitted by telephone, PEARLS is not responsible for errors or omissions arising out of or resulting from mechanical difficulties or failure. 9.
In no circumstances will PEARLS rescind any purchase made or refund the amount paid in respect of any lot.
10.
Neither shipping nor delivery costs are included in the price at which a lot is knocked down by the auctioneer to the buyer.
11. These Conditions of Sale, and rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of New South Wales. By bidding at an auction, whether present in person or by agent, commission bid, telephone or other means, the purchaser shall be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of Courts of New South Wales.
