What I have discovered is my best self is always right there, always has been. By surrounding myself with amazing women, I am reminded that who I am is who they are, women who are doing the best they can to learn and grow from life lessons so richly provided each and every day. I just have to express how happy I am to be doing something I love, with people I love, for the women I know and don’t know yet, who I love and adore! Ladies our stories matter! They shape and define us! They make us unique and YES SPECIAL! No one is quite like you and when you find that courageous moment to share your story, you just may give countless women everywhere permission to be okay with sharing their story. We are all going somewhere, which means we came from somewhere. It may have been painful, hard, heartbreaking or just okay. How we live our lives now will shape our tomorrow! It’s gonna be OKAY! I promise! Let’s celebrate this season like never before because we are women who are forever defining who we are and aspire to be! Feng Shui and the Colors of the Season By Solange Mikucki Master Feng Shui Practitioner

Fall has arrived and the Festivities of the Holiday Season are upon us! It’s almost time to decorate our homes, prepare ourselves for shorter daylight and lots of parties. This is when colors in our home play an important role especially in Feng Shui Principles, having the power to uplift our mood and promote the holiday spirit or to activate negative energy as well. Color and CHI Color has the power to change the energy of “CHI” when to yin, dark and depressing, or to a yang, colorful and uplifting feeling. Color is also one of the constants in our lives, we dress in color and we live in colors at home and at work and let’s not forget the beauty of nature’s color palette.

are water and metal are compatible since metal produces water and you could also add the color yellow or gold representing the Earth element and supporting the metal, so there you are with a color scheme of three productive element colors; Earth, Metal and Water.

The Feng Shui color palette is based on the Five Elements Theory of Feng Shui, with each of these Five Elements represented by a color and compass direction.

Some of these intense color such as reds and purples used without consideration of where they should be used, could create problematic issues in health, relationship and financial losses. Not a good idea during the holidays.

Fire is red, purple, orange, and South; Earth is brown, yellow, Southwest and Northeast; Metal is white, gold, silver, metallic, West and Northwest; Water is blue or black and the North; Wood is light green for the Southeast and dark green for the East. Using the color and the matching compass direction is one way of enhancing “CHI”, and the other is to follow the Productive Relationship of the elements to determine the best use of colors especially during the holidays where we are prone to use stronger colors in intensity.

In 2014, which actually goes until February 19, 2015, in the Chinese calendar, there are two sectors where it is best to avoid the colors red, orange and purple in the Northwest metal element sector of your home or office. Since this sector represent the father/husband of the house or the Manager or CEO of a company, aka as Heaven’s Gate (you never use the fire element at Heaven’s Gate) this sector is also the Host of the #5 Yellow Star in 2014 a very negative energy and the creator of many mishaps when activated.

Color Options Some color options: the colors green with blue or black which are wood and water are compatible since water nurtures wood. White and black which

defining:WOMEN • November 2014 • 08

The second sector to avoid the colors red, orange and purple is the East where the negative Earth element Star #2 of sickness is visiting for the year. In Feng Shui Principles, the Fire element (colors red, orange and purple) promote the creation of Earth making it stronger. This energy represents the mother/wife of

the house and is likely to affect her if these elements are placed in the East sector of the residence. Against a white background for the Southwest and Northwest, you can create drama with the rich accent colors of jewel tones in compatible order such as ruby red/amethyst/purples/deep yellow and rich gold’s, sapphire blues and the deepest emerald greens. Again we have created a compatible color scheme following the productive relationship of the elements which in this case are as follow; Fire (red/ purple); Earth (deep yellows); Metal (white, metallic, reach gold); Water, (sapphire blues or back) and finally the Wood element with (emerald greens). Here you have another compatible color scheme and using all the elements. We of course can decorate our home according to our taste or we will not be comfortable in our surroundings, however, it’s important to understand the fundamentals that support good Feng Shui practice and to be able to apply the theories successfully. This is a good start and intended to help you to greater Feng Shui awareness. Solange Mikucki is available for consultations and also offers private advanced Feng Shui Tutoring. The Holidays & Your Hormones By Dr. Patricia Beckstead, B.S., D.C. Signs of Estrogen Dominance Bloating Water Retention Mood swings Weight or fat gain Cold hands and feet Foggy thinking Memory loss Fatigue Trouble sleeping Insomnia Digestive Issues Depression Food Cravings Cyclical Headaches Palpitations And more...

The holiday season is notoriously stressful as we prepare for gatherings with family and friends, parties, food preparation, gift giving and “the list” goes on. Stress takes center stage, affecting our adrenal glands, immune system, hormone supplies and finally our overall health. Hormone balance plays a leading role in improving health and preventing premature disease and aging. The potential causes of hormone imbalance are numerous, including aging, stress, lifestyle, pharmaceutical drugs and environmental assaults upon our bodies. Breast cancer is one of the leading diseases resulting from an imbalance of hormones, particularly too much estrogen - also known as Estrogen Dominance. The odds are high (1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer) that stress will interfere with a woman’s hormone production increasing her risk for estrogen sensitive cancers such as breast cancer (not to mention ovarian and uterine cancers). The symptoms of hormone imbalance often mimic the symptoms of other conditions making it difficult to recognize when we need to pay more attention to our hormones. Some of the most common and less dramatic symptoms of Estrogen Dominance include; low energy, mood swings, weight gain (especially around the middle), hot flashes, poor memory or concentration, insomnia, and many more. Even PMS (Pre-menstrual syndrome) is completely unnecessary and easily treated by balancing your hormones.

To make matters worse, when seeking a doctor’s advice regarding symptoms we think may be related to our hormones, doctors often rely on blood and saliva testing alone, thus leading to inaccuracies and incorrect diagnoses. defining:WOMEN • November 2014 • 10

Serum (blood) tests measure “free” hormone levels (the hormones that can easily enter the cells to do their hormone job), “total” hormone levels (the hormones attached to substances that carry them into the bloodstream and are not available to do their hormone job), or a calculated combination of both free and total levels. It is NOT an accurate reflection of the bioavailable hormone (the amount of hormone that is active in our bodies). And if the doctor makes a diagnosis of hormone imbalance, you can bet you’ll be prescribed prescription drugs, often making your symptoms worse. Unfortunately, traditional allopathic (mainstream medical doctors) have very little knowledge of natural or bio-identical hormone replacement therapy; therefore you need to be on the alert and guarding your own health.

The Women’s Health Initiative Study, sponsored by the U.S. Government to evaluate the use of synthetic hormones such as Premarin and Provera (both of which have been prescribed for over 60 years without documented proof of their safety or efficacy – and are still being prescribed today) was abandoned in 2002 because of the dangerous effects these drugs had on women. Without knowing where to turn, many women wander around in health food stores with the “deer in the headlights” look as they search for help. Worse, when they become frustrated or confused, they simply go on suffering with their symptoms in silence. Don’t let this happen to you. Take the pro-active approach to your health and be prepared to manage stress in a healthy way. Learn how to avoid stress and other causes

of hormone imbalance, and seek out health care providers who are knowledgeable in natural hormone replacement and balance.

A Season & Reason to Give By Kathlyn Jaramillo

“The LAW of Giving is very simple: If you want JOY Give JOY If LOVE is what you seek, Offer LOVE If you crave material affluence Help others become prosperous.” ~Deepak Chopra~

Every year as the holiday season approaches, opportunities to give abound. I imagine, partly, because as the end of the year comes round non-profits are hoping we will all give those last minute tax deductible dollars to our favorite cause. It also seems that people are generally more charitable this time of year which is good, except for the other 9-10 months of the year when many organizations could really use our support. Whatever you decide to do I encourage you to get involved by not only giving of your resources, but find a cause you connect with and can get behind all year long. The pictures featured above were from the Southern Nevada Down Syndrome Organization’s Annual Festival of the Trees 2013 event. They provided the tree and we collected the goodies on it, surrounding it and the gifts under it. We had such a great time and really pulled our community of defining:WOMEN together to make it happen. We have supplied a couple of opportunities for you within these pages and hope you will seek out something of significance to you. It is the season and once you find your reason...go ahead...GIVE!

Fashion Watch Featuring

Stephanie AnnVehon of Image Empowering

Who doesn’t love Fall/ Winter Fashion? When it comes to fashion, this time of year brings a tremendous amount of comfort to many. It’s really the time of year you can be both comfortable and fashionable! If you have been looking on the internet or picked up the latest fashion magazines, you have most likely seen some of the trends already. Often times women will see something they really like on the runway but aren’t sure how to bring it home. The top trends hitting the runway are the Sweet 60’s, All over Knits, Eccentric Furs, Robe Coats, Sportswear and Aspen Chic. Trends are reported by most major fashion magazines such as Elle and Vogue, but how do you bring these fashions to your closet? Here are my top 3 favorite runway trends and I will show you how you can get these looks at home. The first one is the Sweet 60’s. You can achieve this look through style, cut and color. If you have some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for the sixties and want to bring it back, here are some ways you can do it for your body type. The Sweet Sixty’s style can be achieved with the sexy classic mini skirt and knee high boot. For Emerald, Heart and Curvy body shapes, A-line and pleated mini skirts will flatter your body shape. For Round and Briolette* body shapes, straight and pleated mini skirts will light your fire. If you want to be cherry in your sixties digs, pair your pleated skirt with a fitted top with a Peter Pan color and your straight mini skirt with a bib color blouse.

Next, one of the things we love about winter is getting all tied up in a style that will keep us warm. Each year a coat style hits the runway. This year Hugh Heffner won’t be the only one-stepping out in a robe. Robe Coats are already hitting the stores. The great thing about these coats is they flatter every body type. To flatter your body the best make sure it ties at the smallest part of your waist. Finally, the coziest style hitting the runway and one that you can still wear to the office is all over knitwear. For those of you that get all locked up in your suits during the winter and desire a more comfortable alternative, run, don’t walk to the nearest store and pick yourself up a knit suit. These babies are comfortable and flattering. If you are worried about the extra holiday cookies showing through, just pick up a body slimmer. Ruby Ribbon makes a body slimmer that stays in place better than the most Spanx. What ever trend to decide to step out in this fall and holiday season, please share your pictures and great ideas with us on Facebook with #empoweredstyles to inspire the other women around you.

ave you ever been around someone, perhaps a newer friend and found them to be so positive that it made you wonder, “What is her life really like?” It must be so easy. From a far, or via Facebook, it looks like she has everything, great kids, awesome husband and a great business.

As I sit a visit with one such woman in my life, I am struck by the absolute honesty, kindness and glow of Michelle MacKay Jones. Michelle is the owner of Flowers by Michelle and has been in the floral business for 20 + years. As she recalls when she first purchased her business at the young age of 20, she had no concept of failing. She knew that with hard work and a positive outlook, she would do well and simply started there. Michelle’s outlook on life as always been positive, however, that doesn’t mean she hasn’t had her share of challenges. Married to an ‘amazing man’, Michelle, soon, desired a family. Fertility issues broke her heart. There were tears, failures and yet, as she puts it, there were 2 POSITIVES. Those 2 positive test results over the years produced her now, freshman in High School, Skylar and her 2nd grader Sammie. She also related that she struggled with postpartum depression, a condition that many women feel shame about even sharing. Whatever, the challenges, it is her family

defining:HERSELF Feature

that Michelle absolutely delights in. As we talk she shares that recently her family suffered the loss of her sister-in-law, leaving her brother to raise the four boys this wonderful Mom left behind. The tears come as Michelle expresses the love of her nephews and somehow trusts that their Mom is looking over them from the heavens.

S

o how does Michelle do it? Stay positive in seemingly uncertain times. Admittedly, she lost a bit of that positive perspective when her business suffered, as many did, about 7 years ago. The doubts and feelings of failure crept in, but now, having weathered the seasons, she is so grateful to have a beautiful, blooming business where every day she gets to work alongside her Mom, Bev, Sister, Katie and amazing staff. Michelle has a way of treating people and looking at life that inspired me to be better. Here are just a few tidbits that we can each start with to find positivity and gratitude in every day.

1

See the Good.

Everything has a little bit of good and if we look long enough, there might be a whole lot of good. Every new situation, new person, new adventure,

See the Good has some good in it. See the good and go from there.

2

There is always a Solution.

Often times when things go wrong, we are ready to fight. A customer may call not happy with their order or we get stuck on an issue or we just tend to, as Michelle puts it, ‘Freak out’, about something. She then sings, “No Problem” and gets to work on finding the solution.

3

Avoid Annoyances. Respect

one another enough to see each other’s strengths, rather than the annoyances. We all have them. Build on the strengths and avoid the rest.

4

Give Back. For all the negative

out there, Michelle is quick to point out there is so much good and so many good people in our town of Las Vegas. Find ways to give back, it makes your heart happy.

5

Show Patience & Kindness.

Allow others to have their say, acknowledge their considerations and show kindness. Immediately you will see others soften up. Holiday Edition • 19

s we wrap up our time together, Michelle reminds me that, simple acts of kindness make the biggest differences. Making others smile takes the focus off of you and any problems you might be having, long enough, to make you smile too. FLIP FLOPS to STILETTOS By Angelique Daniels

Imagine receiving a gift of spectacular flip-flops. These are not just any ordinary shoes; they feature a thick memory foam sole and are adorned with sparkling Swarovski crystals. Your brain starts to calculate all the outfits they will complement, the possibilities are endless. Your heart races with excitement because you realize you could wear them EVERYDAY! Like a pair of cozy, fuzzy slippers, EVERYONE loves a good pair of flip flops. Imagine receiving another gift, a dramatic pair of stilettos. These striking shoes feature red bottoms and a slender sexy 5 high heel. Immediately, your brain starts to calculate that you have NO use for these shoes. You can feel your feet cramping just imagining trying to walk in them. Nothing in your wardrobe will match them, plus they’d be incredibly uncomfortable and hard to walk in. Not everyone can appreciate the value of owning a good pair of stilettos. Learning to balance I am the SHOE CHICK, I own and operate a 20-foot truck that I transformed into a mobile store that features shoes and accessories. Every time I get behind the wheel, I reflect on everything my truck represents and the incredible journey I’m on. I am a wife, mom, entrepreneur, restaurant manager, author and motivational speaker. My irrepressible focused strategy to be the BEST me comes from this philosophy: GET UNCOMFORTABLE - Walk in those Stilettos! Every day, we have new choices. We can choose to slip into our comfortable flip-flop mentality or challenge ourselves to give the stilettos a chance. What could you accomplish if you went outside of your comfort zone?

Part of the irony of all of this is that wear a women’s size 13 shoe; finding shoes has always been a challenge. I recently purchased my first pair of stilettos. You can imagine my excitement as these are the most fashionable pair of shoes I have ever owned. I could not walk in the shoe at first, it was a process. First, I had to learn how to balance and carefully calculate each step. In life, when you make the decision to step out of your flip flops mentality, you must make a plan.

How will you balance these new objectives and still maintain all your responsibilities. How will you balance it all? This will require you to calculate each step, make a plan, and focus and you will take each step with increasing confidence as I did.

GET UNCOMFORTABLE You were born with unique gifts and talents. The universe has gifted you. Your gift to the universe is to use it in whatever capacity you can. If you have not discovered your gift or talent yet, think about what others say about you. Compliments are God’s way of revealing them to you.

Everyday we have new choices! Do we stay comfortable or get out of our comfort zone? Are you caring, loving, funny, creative, a strategic planner a great leader? With my gift of leadership, I am the club leader for the Henderson Defining Women group and I am a respected Restaurant Manager and Mentor. With my gift of creativity, I have written a couple of books and executed my vision to transform an old UPS truck into my mobile store.

Recently, I partnered with Kathlyn to support the development of Mariah’s house. This will enable me to utilize my gift of compassion, service, and to nurture as we work together to open this Safe House for Women in Las Vegas. Years ago, most of these ventures would have been as uncomfortable as wearing a pair of stilettos. Today, reflecting on all I’ve been able to accomplish, I realize that it has all been possible because I had the courage to leave my flip-flops behind. Tomorrow, as you unwrap the gift of a new day…. GET UNCOMFORTABLE, challenge yourself to begin walking in those stilettos.

Business is in the Pink By Kathlyn Jaramillo as told by Shaina Palarca

Clearly a vivacious, creative, brilliant woman, Shaina Palarca, sits before me as an adorable, retro stylized visionary. A thirty-something powerhouse Shaina (shay-na), is the owner of Pink Cherry, a Boutique Salon specializing in Brazilian & Brow Waxing.. clients, sits and looks a pictures of babies and she likes it this way. Women can feel a sense of freedom when they come in for services. Shaina also developed a specialized Brazilian technique (the “BAREable technique”) that accomplishes a Brazilian in 15 minutes. Although fast, you are not rushed... She wants a client leaving perfect. As we continue to talk I ask Shaina what advice she would give to women who what to take on something really big, like opening a store front or moving forward with a big vision. Her responses are not only thoughtful, but incredibly inspiring.

Always an Entrepreneur

S

haina has always been geared toward the idea of being an entrepreneur, whatever strange path that took. She dabbled in tattooing and the finance business, always dreaming that whatever path she went down would lead her to eventually having her own gig. She proudly declares she has a tendency to take-charge and would rather take-on the world then sit by and smell the roses. Beauty school came about because she had a little one and wanted to pursue something that she could do during the day while her daughter was in school. Now, an educated, licensed aesthetician, Shaina got into the spa industry craving a bit of quietness and zen for herself. However, her energy and delightful expressiveness was shushed regularly at the spa she worked in. She realized that with the type of service and relationships she wanted to have with her customers, it was time to venture out on her own. What I am most impressed with is her balance and blending of her business savvy and enthusiasm. Shaina has clearly defined that Pink Cherry is a waxing boutique with a luxurious, retro ambience, professional services and a welcoming, small town feel. The TRUTH ABOUT WAXING By Shaina Palarca/Pink Cherry Wax

1. All Waxing places are the same

Don’t get “ripped off ” by a bad Wax. The difference between a good wax and a bad is substantial and can cost you lots of time (in some cases 15 minutes vs. 45 minutes), not to mention pain and suffering. Stick to the pros that follow a specific technique and wax frequently and quickly (20 minutes or less).

2. Double dipping doesn’t matter because the wax is hot and kills germs

May we first start out by saying, ewww! Hot wax is warm yes but it is not nearly hot enough to kill a virus, (for example a wart virus) bacteria, and not to mention fungi (which can adapt and change with each new host).

3. Waxing Makes the hair grow back thicker and darker!

Uhmmmm, NOPE! This one is completely bananas. You’re personal hair type is dictated by your genetic and hormonal makeup and that is just the way it goes. In fact, the opposite is true about waxing. Waxing hair off and sticking to schedule of 5-6 weeks will actually even out your hair cycles and cause the hair to continue to thin out and become softer and finer! Holiday Edition • 25

Who would have thought that a woman, on her own personal journey for peace and joy, heading out for an oil change, would bring us an amazingly beautiful gift, a tranquil, safe place of love...

Somebody Please

“Zen Me”

By Kathlyn Jaramillo as told by Taleen Dahling

“How does such a beautiful soul just wither so painfully away?”

I

magine a place where the moment you enter your cares and woes simply melt away. A beautiful, serene, warm, inviting space, dedicated to you. As I entered I glanced around at my surroundings and was immediately taken aback by the elegant feel. I then met the woman behind its creation and her smile and positive energy mirrored back to me the delight I felt just being there. After a brief tour, which was equally delightful with so many yummy offerings, we sat to chat in the tranquility of the space. As we chatted I discovered a woman, like so many of us, set to do the expected, the ‘right’ thing, yet, who finally broke free of the unseen chains that had her forever searching for peace and happiness. Taleen was raised in a somewhat strict Middle Eastern culture that didn’t leave her with many choices when it came to imagining a life of meaning, purpose and vision. She is careful not to blame her culture, yet

at the same time her future was all but laid out for her. She would, as directed, finish high school, go to college and get a very high ranking degree, make lots of money, find a husband, get married and have kids. Taleen’s well-meaning parents thought that this was the right way to teach their American born children. For Taleen, it was what she was supposed to do and that left very little room, if any for dreaming dreams and self-discovery. Unsatisfied with the thought of following the right path and after graduating high school, with honors of course, Taleen soon rebelled. This led her down a path of leaving her parents’ home, never to return, at the young age of 18 years old. It became her way of exploring her options in life without having anyone else’s vision interfering with hers. She, eventually pursued college, while working various full time jobs and, as she puts it, spiraled out of control. Desiring a major change, Taleen started attending the University of Nevada Las Vegas. As is with Las Vegas, the partying and Vegas lifestyle caught up to her. She decided to buckle down and get to studying. One thing Taleen soon discovered is that she wanted to somehow give back and be able to use some of her own experiences to support others. Soon, with a graduate degree in Psychology she landed a great job at one of the largest foster care agencies in Las Vegas. Within a year she went from a case manager to supervising 4 teams of 30 people. Feeling pretty accomplished. She went on to meet her husband and have a beautiful little boy, her greatest joy, Ethan. Taleen was able to stay home with her new baby, yet internally she felt unsettled and unfulfilled. Soon and unfortunately, her marriage suffered a devastating blow and a custody battle ensued. She found herself back on the job

market and, though the hardest time of her life, she landed an envied position with L’Oreal, USA. Making more money than she could have ever imagined, yet, she ached inside, ached for peace. Ached to stop the pain she felt for ending up as a single Mom. She felt stripped of motivation, trust and happiness. She awoke each day on auto-pilot looking for an escape, especially when she didn’t have her son. She disliked her job. She resented the fact she couldn’t see her son 100% of his life. And more deeply she had lost who she had become. She felt she had nothing left. She asked the question, “How does such a beautiful soul just wither so painfully away?” Now, at rock bottom, how could she ever forgive herself? She didn’t even know where to begin. Underneath all of that sadness there was hope, even if only a little. She still dreamt of creating a commu-

nity where she could give others a place to feel safe and happy. A place where she could find healing for her own mind, body and spirit and then pass it on to others seeking the same. Then and there, not knowing how she would financially survive, Taleen took her biggest leap of faith. She quit her job and got to work creating her vision and passion to make a beautiful space were her clients would be heard and not judged; a place to heal your mind, body and soul without being so costly? And never in her wildest dreams would she have thought that taking her car for an oil change would be the beginning of her dreams coming true. In the same center as her oil change, she saw a place that called out to her and ignited the flame to rise and begin anew.

As I sit in this quiet, tranquil space with Taleen, she is a self-proclaimed different woman than the woman previously described in this story. As she tells it, this journey has been an amazing transformation for her, a transformation of love, love for herself and others. She no longer even knows the meaning of stress. Her new company Zen Me fits her like a glove. The name Zen Me came to her so naturally. She wanted to convey a sense of tranquility. Zen Me is what describes everything she is about. As for the next chapters of her life, Taleen deeply desires to inspire and empower everyone who walks through her doors to make a conscious choice to live a complete and fully beautiful life. She certainly has inspired me. I am drawn here and want to stay. She truly offers each of us a way to find a home away from home retreat to experience holistic healing in a stress free and relaxing environment via multiple modalities and simply getting quiet. Taleen welcomes and invites you to take a few steps through her door and simply proclaim, “Zen ME!” She understands. She cares. She has been there. She will be waiting.

Zen Me is located at 10885 S. Eastern Ave #100, Henderson Stop by or call to learn more about what is offered.

Women in Business Making Strides and Giving Back

Ghandi Deeter Law Offices is a boutique law firm, located in downtown Las Vegas, which specializes in family law, bankruptcy, guardianship and probate. The law firm also specializes in fostering a family-like environment between the firm and its clients. One might say that for a women-owned law firm, this comes naturally. The managing partners of Ghandi Deeter Law Offices are Nedda Ghandi and Laura Deeter, both graduates of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas William S. Boyd School of Law. They met in 2006 while working together at the law firm of Goldsmith & Guymon, P.C. Their experience at that prior law firm helped to lay the foundation for some of the unique issues women in law firms face, as Goldsmith & Guymon is also a firm owned by women. As associates in that firm, Nedda and Laura worked together on various matters, including handling trials together. While they always had a good working relationship and friendship, they could not have known at the time that in just a few short years their career paths would once again intersect, and result in the formation of Ghandi Deeter Law Offices. In 2012, Nedda founded her own law firm, with the aim of providing a personable legal experience to clients who are going through a difficult time in their lives. She believed that the Las Vegas area had a strong need for such a law firm, because so often she had seen firms where clients would be treated as just another case number. Nedda knew that when clients are filing for divorce or bankruptcy, or going through probate proceedings, they are necessarily dealing with a very emotional experience. While providing excellent and skilled legal services to these clients is essential, she also knew that such legal services should be administered with compassion and respect. Nedda’s firm quickly grew, and by 2013 it was time to expand. Laura was the perfect fit, as she and Nedda share the same philosophy regarding their clientele: treat clients as a member of the family. Both partners place a priority on not only delivering top-notch legal services, but delivering them with understanding and heart. Ghandi Deeter Law Offices has now grown into a firm with a full-time staff and its own building in downtown Las Vegas, and its focus on the client as a member of the family has never wavered. While the two partners of the law firm are women, the office is not a women only firm. The office also features another attorney, Bryan Viellion, Esq., another Boyd School of Law Alum. Everyone in the firm focuses on the distinct principles in which Ghandi and Deeter focus. Partners Ghandi and Deeter have been featured in a variety of publications and presented with numerous awards that is quite impressive for such a young firm. Both have been featured in Super Lawyers Magazine, published in all 50 states, as recipients of the magazine’s unique Super Lawyer distinction. Ghandi Deeter Law Offices is also featured as the “Law Firm of the Month” in a recent edition of Attorney at Law Magazine. In 2013, Laura received the Louis Weiner Pro Bono Service Award from the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada. The award was given to Laura for her focus on helping victims of domestic violence. In 2013 and 2014, Nedda was selected as a member of Nevada’s “Legal Elite,” which is the annual list of Nevada’s top attorneys published in Nevada Business Magazine. While the duo have been recipients of many honors and awards, they have not lost sight of what matters most to them – serving their clientele

Traditions

By Myra Bourne

We all get a little nostalgic during the holidays remembering our traditions, the customs that have been handed down from generation to generation. They give us direction, connection and comfort as we celebrate our lives. They define our beliefs and preserve our heritage because they are based on our individual feelings and ideas about life and family. Life and Family change though. We live in a faster paced world today where many families are blended and others are scattered around the globe. We can preserve the essence of our traditions though with a little ingenuity, some practical ideas and communication. Keep what you treasure most and replace what doesn’t work with something new. New traditions begin the same way old traditions became a part of our lives. We integrate them into our celebration. They can be something as small as a new angel that sits atop the Christmas tree or as elaborate as an annual Christmas Cruise. We added a little twist to one of our traditions years ago. When we take down our tree each year our angel is packed away with the name of the person who gets to put her in place the following year, the kids take turns. We always thought we would remember but when we didn’t we added a note under her wings. This tiny change brought playful anticipation and peace on earth. A solution for scattered family might be to meet in a central location. It could be on a cruise ship or at a log cabin nestled in the woods. Our adult fam-

ily celebrated one Christmas Eve in a luxury suite at a local hotel. All the decorations and food were provided, no fuss, no mess, for any of us. When the evening ended our kids packed up our grandkids and their gifts and headed home. My husband and I then spent a romantic night together and enjoyed breakfast in bed on Christmas Morning. This was a onetime deal but there is no reason why it couldn’t become a tradition. Another tradition emerged quite accidently from one of our well established customs. Each year we packed up the family and spent the day playing on the mountain where we selected and cut our own tree. While trimming our tree one year we noticed a bird’s nest in its branches. That same nest is now placed in our new tree every year. I have to confess that it has become one of my favorite traditions, especially the part where I buy a present and place it in the nest. I address it to myself with no hint of who it is from. It is always something small that will fit in the nest, usually jewelry. Everyone has their suspicions but it remains my secret. If you like, you can make this your tradition too. Its fun and you’re definitely worth it.

’m still surprised and amazed that my parents did not take me home from the hospital in a onesie that read “Born to Travel”. As far back as I can remember I have imagined and been curious about what life was like on the next street, the next town, the next state and eventually the next country. I had a fabulous 25 year career with United Airlines. I retired seven years ago, however, my passion for travel did not retire! I have a new exciting career as a travel consultant fro Getaway Girl Travel. In my exciting years as a travel professional I have travelled the world. I have also been blessed with the opportunity to take an annual mother daughter trip with my mother. In the 30 plus years of our travel experiences we have been creating beautiful memories in exotic, fun filled locations. I have since started that tradition with my own lovely daughter. Some of my amazing vacations of a lifetime have included the awesome Christmas lights and festivities at the beautiful Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tennessee, riding the rails and experiencing the breathtaking scenery on the wine train in Napa, California, walking the winding cobblestone paths and taking in the unforgettable aromas along the way in Positano, Italy and traveling to Ireland the land of my ancestors, where the countryside magically takes on a life of color as if painted from a magnificent bright green palette. I hope that you will join me in the journey on the pages of my travel blog and in this quarterly column, as I take you to places in your dreams and to those you will want to add to your bucket list!

Does Your Life Need a Wife? By Debby Freeman

Women regularly hear that we can “have it all” and while this may be true it doesn’t necessarily mean that we can do it all! Instead, what often happens is that you have to focus on managing and growing your business or career, while tasks pile up for you to complete over the weekend or when you get around to them.

T

he cost of success can be quite high if you try to do it all by yourself. Relationships don’t get the attention they deserve, persistent stress can lead to negative health effects, and you may not be able to really enjoy the fruits of your labor because you are always working. So what can you do? Well, look at Fortune 500 companies; they didn’t get to that level with just 1 person! Even Mark Zuckerberg had help getting Facebook off the ground. Hiring help, especially people with skills you may not have or who will do necessary functions that you don’t enjoy, is key in expanding and growing a business.

T

he good news is that you don’t need to be ultrawealthy or a Fortune 500 CEO to get the help you need! Many small businesses and entrepreneurs put off hiring an assistant because of payroll costs or concerns that there won’t be enough work to fill the assistant’s hours. However, think about all the mundane tasks that sap your energy and divert your attention from the real work of your business. They have to get done, but does it have to be by you? Most likely the answer is no! Instead, you can bring in a flexible assistant who can take those tasks on as a project in a chunk of hours. You can contract to have the assistant for a certain number of hours a week or month or on an as needed basis. ow consider the other part of your life, the side that is possibly getting a little neglected while you are out there working hard. While it makes perfect sense to most people to hire an assistant for their business we often overlook the role they can fill in our personal lives as well. Having a personal assistant can save you money, help you be healthier, and free up precious time so you can keep doing what is important. For example: you work all day and at the end of it you are tired and just want to go home, but you know there is nothing in your refrigerator to eat. Are you going to summon the energy to go to the grocery store or is it dinner out again? Instead a personal assis-

What’s on Your Bucket List for 2015?

By Danielle Duffey

With the 2015 just around the corner, I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to start a bucket list of your own. Typically we refer to this as a list of everything you want to do before you ‘kick the bucket’. Some people like to call it a ‘Life List.’ Whatever you call it, think about what it is you might like to try this year. Ask a friend to join you. As you list out all those things you have always wanted to do, remember, life can be short, so take some time to play! Being a Pisces is fabulous. I am artistic and thoughtful, crafty and creative, emotional and giving. I love to attend costume parties and travel. I have discovered that my bucket list is just another creative expression of my personality. I am a goal oriented and list driven person. I started my bucket list in 2005 and I wrote down all of the things that I wanted to do and the places I wanted to see. Over the years, I have added dozens of new things and my list is ever changing and evolving.

defense course, participating in a flash mob and just recently, I had the time of my life at a lantern festival. Some of my big vision goals include owning a lake home, running in the Lochness marathon in Scotland and learning how to snow ski. I am so proud of my accomplishments and this list always seems to keep me focused, especially when times are hard. One of the joys about creating a bucket list is sharing it with others. For me, it is a great way to expose myself when meeting someone new. I delight in watching their reactions to some of my list items or nod in agreement because they have done that or want to do it too. I love hearing about other people’s adventures and more often than not, it inspires me to add more adventures to my list right then and there.

One of my very first bucket list items was to run a marathon. While training for my first marathon, my husband announced that he was leaving me and there was no changing his mind. I was absolutely blind sided. I wanted to crawl into a ball in my bed and lay there forever, however, I didn’t. I hired a coach and focused hard on my marathon training. Sometimes, I feel like running saved my life. I soon went on to complete that marathon and that proud Developing bucket list goals with friends and loved ones is moment will be with me forever. Since then, I have deep- even more special. Experiencing new things with others is ened my love for running and completed dozens of races. so enjoyable. I believe that I can be a serious businesswoman and a fun person at the same time. This is a strange concept to some people. I think many are afraid to be silly because it is their perception that silliness equals irresponsibility. I disagree. I believe you can find the perfect balance of being creative and responsible and this is why I am able to do so many things that people admire. More importantly, we all need precious time for us to be silly and to play. Play is essential in adult lives. Research has shown that people who do fun things are happier and may even live longer. Some of the health benefits are stress reduction, brain stimulation, and feeling young. Play helps to develop and improve social skills. Trying new things can even heal emotional wounds and help you to move forward.

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list” My friends who follow me on Facebook always tell me that they love to live vicariously through me. Sometimes, they are inspired to get out and have fun. I love it when someone comes up to me to tell me they are training for a race or learning something new because they saw me doing it first. Words cannot express the true joy and gratitude that this brings me. Another favorite creative way to express myself is through costume parties! I probably attend over 100 parties, in costume, per year. I the details and always have the perfect accessories to create something original and special. I have helped others with countless costumes and to my good fortune, I have won cash and fabulous prizes. This is my thing and so much FUN! Whatever you decide to do this next year remember there is no right or wrong way to create your bucket list. The important thing is to just get started!

Quick And Easy Bucket List Tips...

Remember no right or wrong just get started!

1. Write your bucket list down 2. Have a minimum of 10 items 3. Think BIG 4. Get specific 5. Don’t worry about what other people may think, this is about YOU! 6. “A Lucky Day for the Ducks”

O

n May 20th, 2014 five perfect baby ducks hatched in an incubator at a kindergarten classroom here in Las Vegas. They were a science project on hatching and a life lesson on empathy for one family. It soon came time for the ducks to hatch and first hatched, Marlin, a beautiful mallard girl. Next came Lucky, another mallard, we later learned, is a stunning boy. Baby rattled around for a few hours but finally broke thru, the smallest of all. Then the two biggest eggs started rattling around and cracked. With help, Sunshine (a sweet yellow fluff) and Ryan Goosling (tall, stature grey & white boy) were welcomed into the family. They were admired all day long in the class. Held and loved most of the non school hours. Kids took turns taking them home to share with their families and learn to care for their new babies. The ducklings grew fast. The baby ducks that were quiet little peeps turned into squawking quacks when separated. Oh and the smell of their indoor pool bed in the morning became too much for the normal city family. The ducks were no longer cute babies to take home, they needed a place of their own.

By Lisa Pierce-Paquette & Kathlyn Jaramillo

very little thought given as to how these babies were raised and how they will survive. They were now destined to be dropped off into the wild after weeks and sometimes months of human family care. The researched numbers show about a 5-10% chance of survival in this situation. Other animals (dogs or coyotes) usually get them within the first two days. If they are protected from wild predators, they still don’t know how to find food. Other birds feel they are a threat to their safety and will also attack them.

These five ducks were lucky enough to have avoided this. They lived the summer in a family At this point in these hatchlings lives, most backyard happy and safe. Unfortunately, the famteachers doing this lesson take the ducks back to ily lived in a HOA neighborhood that did not alwhere they got the eggs in the first place, with low ducks. Once again the ducks needed a home. defining:WOMEN • November 2014 •

Upon research V Animal Sanctuary looked like the perfect home. VAS is a local start-up farm animal sanctuary (non-profit 501c3). They are in the heart of the Las Vegas valley. Their purpose is to educate the community on animal empathy. All the animal residents are rescues and now live a safe happy life. These ducks are one of four duck families at the sanctuary. They have moved in with Elvis & Howard and a rooster named Francis. Everyone seems to adapting pretty well. Plans of a real duck pond have begun and hope that the four duck families can be joined together and enjoy it for the rest of their lives. It is organizations, communities really, like V Animal Sanctuary that gives animals like this a chance. It can be a Lucky Life! Please support V Animal Sanctuary by visiting their website www.vanimalsanctuary.org To specifically support the duck pond fund go to: www.youcaring.com/non profits/ urban-farm-animal-sanctuary-needs-a-duckpond-/218539 Lastly, please encourage our teachers who are thinking of doing this science project to make sure these babies have a safe loving home before they hatch. An overpopulated wildlife sanctuary is not a happy home for human raised pets. Empathy for animals raises our awareness and each one of us can do our part to help all living creatures. It’s a good thing to do.
