Student Representation Student representation is a voluntary role and a great way for you to gain many useful skills for your CV. There are thousands of graduates every year; however, employers are looking for graduates with particular skills. Be one step ahead; be a student representative and gain skills required for your future. Being a student representative widens your understanding of the University and the Students’ Union and you will be kept up to date with all the latest issues and developments. Student reps can attend an in-depth training course to develop their skills, receiving a certificate on completion. As always, you will receive support and guidance from the student representation department throughout your year. The main roles of a student rep are: Representing his/her fellow students. Attending and participating in University/Union governing activities. Recognising student issues and raising them at the right meetings. Feeding back information to your fellow students.
Handbook2008(2).indd 12

The responsibilities of a student rep can be tailored to each individual, so it’s an excellent activity to coincide with your studies. You can put as little or as much time into the activity as you want. It all depends on how much you want to get involved. Being a student rep is one of the most important and useful roles you can play while at University. It’s a great opportunity to get involved and change things at the University and Students’ Union – you can make a real difference! Getting Involved Membership to the Students’ Union is free and, as a member, you can gain all the benefits we have to offer, as well as the advantages and benefits that carrying a USSU card grants you nationally. Getting involved with the Students’ Union couldn’t be simpler and starts the day you join the University. Once you have registered on your course of study in The Gateway, you will collect your University campus card. This card also doubles as your Students’ Union card. If you want to be more involved with the Students’ Union, you have many options, such as taking an active role in Union representation, participating in one of our clubs and societies, or taking advantage of the wider range of volunteering and employment opportunities that the Union offers. By the time you’ve finished reading this handbook you should have a pretty good idea of how you’d like to be involved. All you need to do then is contact the relevant member of staff by checking the contact details at the bottom of their page.

DN Magazine By now, your head is probably hurting from all the information that has been thrown at you. What you’d like is a nice sit down with a brew and a magazine. Here’s where we come in. We are Degrees North, the official magazine for the Students’ Union here at Sunderland. Here at DN we feel we have a duty to both inform and entertain. So, while you’ll find general larking about and fun and games within our pages, hopefully you’ll find some of it genuinely useful as well. If we tick both of those boxes, we feel we’ve done a good job. This year, for the first time, the DN website will be fully functional, brimming with the latest entertainment reviews, news from the Uni and the SU, and blogs from some of the most talented writers in Sunderland. Sunderland You can find us through the SU website at sunderlandsu. co.uk, and every few rew weeks our printed form will be hitting the shelves. It’ll be available around campus, and in the shop at Bonded as well as at Campus Campus MQ. nightclub You won’t our bevery ableown to miss student us, I promise. venue. If you feel particularly strongly about something you see in the DN or on our website, drop us a line on the e-mail address at the bottom of the page to get it off your chest. If enough of you get in touch, we might even bring in a letters page, and then you’ll get your name in shiny print to show your mam and dad. And we can shout at the writer who had annoyed so many of you. We’re always looking for people to contribute to DN, whether it is a writer, a designer, a photographer, or however you feel your skills can help us become even better. You don’t need to be particularly dazzling as a writer, just enthusiasm and ideas is enough. Wanting to help is the first step, and to get involved get us on the e-mail address at the bottom of the page. It’s a really great opportunity for you to enhance your CV and make you stand out from the crowd. Plus you’ll be working with us, and we’re lovely. Our professional staff are available throughout the year, including during the Summer vacation. We also provide a wide range of leaflets containing information on many matters that concern students. So, feel free to drop in and get yours.

Set Up Your Own Club If you decide you don’t want to take up any of the current clubs or societies that we at the University currently offer then why not try and create your own. It’s a simple process, all that is needed from yourself is to fill in a form which can be collected from the Sports & Activities department in the Edinburgh Building and be able to recruit 15 willing members. You then state your club or society’s aims and objectives and as long as they’re different from any existing club or society, not course based and don’t conflict with any Students’ Student Union Unionrules rulesthen thenyou youshall shallbebegood goodtotogo! go! Here are some clubs and societies we would like to set up: Archery, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Climbing, Cricket (women), Gymnastics, Ju Jitsu, Futsal, Korfball, La Crosse, Orienteering, Pool, Rugby League, Snooker, Squash (women), Ten Pin Bowling, Ultimate Frisbee and Water Polo. For more information, contact: Gavin Barnes, Sports & Activities Officer. E-mail: su.sports-act-officer@sunderland.ac.uk. Tel: 0191 515 4119.

Annual Dinner Dance On Friday 29th of March, 2009, the Sports & Activities department will hold what is seen as our highlight of the year; the Clubs & Societies Dinner Dance. As in previous years the event will take place at Sunderland AFC’s home ground Stadium Of Light and, historically, is an event enjoyed by all. The function suite at the stadium is an impressive venue, which is suited perfectly to the atmosphere of the ball where everyone takes full advantage to get dressed up for the evening. The tickets for the event can be bought be bought from from thethe University Sports sports department, and the ticket includes: a three course meal as well as the evening’s entertainment, and what better way to commemorate the evening than but by byhaving havingyour your picture taken by a professional photographer while looking your best. At the ball, all the awards (team colours as well as individual and team awards) are presented and they are seen as a great honour to receive. All awards are decided by information based on a nomination which is posted to all clubs and society members prior to the ceremony, and judged by the Sports & Activities Committee.

Varsity Tournament Each year we have a multi-activity sports tournament against our local rivals, the University of Teesside Students’ Union. All of our teams compete against Teesside’s equivalent in what can only be described as a battle through blood, sweat and tears for the coveted Tees-Wear Trophy. Varsity switches location every year. Last year saw the event staged at our University. University, After after some hard fought games we successfully won the Varsity 18 points to 10, which meant the trophy came back to where it rightfully belongs! This year Varsity is taking place on the enemies’ enemies turf turfon onthe the 27th March 2009, and this year we hope to regain the trophy and win away at Teeside for the first time in history. The various sporting events take place over the course of the day, followed by the awards ceremony and entertainments, which, in keeping with tradition, will continue through to the early hours of the morning. Whether you’re competing or not, it’s a good opportunity for the Students’ Union to pull together and show its true colours; the colours of the USSU.

So far we have been to Loret loret de de Mar, Dublin, Isle of Man, Les Arcs and the most successful tour Salou. This tour is also seen as one of the highlights of the year in the sporting calender. Many May would wouldsay saythere thereisisno nobetter betterway way to spend an Easter holiday. This year’s tour sees the University touring party going back to Salou. The tour commences 4th of April through to 10th April 2009, therefore shouldn’t affect any academic studies too much. For more info on the sports tour contact the Sports and Activities Officer officer or club Club officer. Officer. Snowsports Tour: The Snowsports Club also goes away each year on a ski and snowboard holiday in Europe. This is a huge event where everyone, from beginners to experts, goes along and plays in the snow. There is no shortage of drinking going on and the nights out are fantastic. If you have an interest in snowsports or a penchant for the extreme, this is an event you shouldn’t miss. For more information, contact the Snowsports snowsports club Club officers. Officers.
