The images that adorn our catalog covers are the product of a design competition that is carried out each year by De Gruyter in cooperation with Lette Verein Berlin, a vocational training association. Participants in the competition were asked to create a series of interrelated images that are united by an overarching design concept. We would like to thank Alexander Kerski for his winning submission, which uses procedurally generated letter-based objects to create vibrant and abstract visual worlds. VOLUME 2: SEMIFINITE SETTING

SINGULAR TRACES

This volume introduces noncommutative integration theory on semifinite von Neumann algebras and the theory of singular traces for symmetric operator spaces. Deeper aspects of the association between measurability, poles and residues of spectral zeta functions, and asymptotics of heat traces are studied, including the integration of quantum differentials, measures on fractals, and Connes’ formula on the Hochschild class of the Chern character.

ANALYSIS AND PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS ON MANIFOLDS, FRACTALS AND GRAPHS

This book is the first complete study and monograph dedicated to singular traces. For mathematical readers the text offers, due to Nigel Kalton’s contribution, a complete theory of traces on symmetrically normed ideals of compact operators. For mathematical physicists and other users of Connes’ noncommutative geometry the text offers a complete reference to Dixmier traces and the deeper mathematical features of singular traces.

The book covers the latest research in the areas of mathematics that deal the properties of partial differential equations and stochastic processes on spaces in connection with the geometry of the underlying space. Written by experts in the field, this book is a valuable tool for the advanced mathematician. Alexander Grigor’yan, University of Bielefeld, Germany and Yuhua Sun, Nankai University, China.

ALGEBRAIC COMBINATORICS

Algebraic combinatorics is the study of combinatorial objects as an extension of the study of finite permutation groups, or, in other words, group theory without groups. In the spirit of Delsarte’s theory, this book studies combinatorial objects such as graphs, codes, designs, etc. in the general framework of association schemes, providing a comprehensive overview of the theory as well as pointing out to extensions. NONLINEAR NONAUTONOMOUS DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS Global Behavior and Applications

The aim of this monograph is to initiate and facilitate a systematic study of the global asymptotic behavior of nonlinear nonautonomous difference equations. In addition to general classes of nonautonomous equations, a focus lies on special classes including periodic and asymptotically autonomous equations. Extreme stability (path stability) as well as global asymptotic stability in periodic equations is studied.

ELLIPTIC AND PARABOLIC EQUATIONS INVOLVING THE HARDY-LERAY POTENTIAL

The scientific literature on the Hardy-Leray inequality, also known as the uncertainty principle, is very extensive and scattered. The Hardy-Leray potential shows an extreme spectral behavior and a peculiar influence on diffusion problems, both stationary and evolutionary. In this book, a big part of the scattered knowledge about these different behaviors is collected in a unified and comprehensive presentation. PHILOSOPHISCHE NOTIZBÜCHER / PHILOSOPHICAL NOTEBOOKS

BAND 2: ZEITEINTEILUNG (MAXIMEN) I UND II [Volume 2: Time Division (Maxims) I and II] Die philosophischen Bemerkungen Kurt Gödels sind in 15 Notizbüchern überliefert.

Kurt Gödel’s philosophical notes have been preserved in the form of 15 notebooks. This Volume 2 consists of Gödel’s individual ethics, which he develops as an applied ethics aimed at self-perfection. The editor introduces relevant reflections from the ethics of the Stoa and ancient dietetic and lifestyle principles. In addition, she describes their incorporation in the Philosophical Notebooks. Gödel; metaphysics; philosophy of science

The fact that the world obeys natural laws makes it possible to predict, explain, and deliberately manipulate natural processes. The idea of natural laws is thus an integral part of the scientific and philosophical conception of reality. This book provides a systematic overview of the most important philosophical theories of natural law and concludes with an innovative twist on the best-systems theory. Philosophy of science; adequacy

SALOMON MAIMON’S THEORY OF INVENTION

VON DER DIALOGISCHEN LOGIK ZUM DIALOGISCHEN KONSTRUKTIVISMUS

LOGIK

Scientific Genius, Analysis and Euclidean Geometry

How can we invent new certain knowledge in a methodical manner? Chikurel argues that Maimon’s contribution to the ars inveniendi tradition lies in the methods of invention, applied on Euclidean geometry, and in his notion of analysis as grounded both on intuition and the principle of contradiction. Centering around methodical invention and scientific genius, Maimon’s work is unique in an era glorifying the artistic genius, known as Geniezeit. RECHENBUCH [Planudes, Mathematics] Griechisch – deutsch

Rechenbuch; Mathematikgeschichte; Byzanz; Wissenschaft

Maximos Planudes, a classically educated scholar and teacher of the 13th century, demonstrates in his “Mathematics according to the Indians” how even complicated mathematical problems can be solved easily. To achieve this, he uses the innovative concept of “zero” which had come to Europe from India via the Arab world. This highly influential book is now presented in a fresh bilingual edition.
