Dear Readers, You have probably already heard the news: on 4 March we officially announced the launch of De Gruyter Brill and we are delighted that our range of Jewish Studies will be even more diverse and inspiring in the future. As we are still at the beginning of this process, this catalogue only contains the new publications that will appear under the De Gruyter umbrella. Fresh and distinctly Jewish perspectives are at the centre of the new series Contemporary Jewish Life – Beiträge zu jüdischen Lebenswelten in Deutschland und Europa, edited by Dani Kranz and Sarah Roß. We are looking forward to the first volumes! A lot is new, but we cherish also our long-standing and renowned series: Conditio Judaica is celebrating the publication of its 100th volume in summer 2024, and Studia Judaica with its sub-series Studia Samaritana and Rethinking Diaspora has already published its 125th volume (pp. 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17). There are also new discoveries in the digital field: The database Vertreibungen aus den deutschen Universitäten im Nationalsozialismus (Expulsions from German universities during National Socialism) compiled by Michael Grüttner offers biographical information on 1,300 expelled academics from all German universities that existed in 1933 (pp. 38, 41). We wish our readers exciting discoveries and stimulating reading!

In these conversations on Canaanite and biblical themes, six scholars debate the implications of key passages (Genesis 1; Habbakuk 3; and 2 Kings 22–23) for understanding ancient concepts of creation, chaos, monotheism and Yahwism itself. This book reveals methods and processes of scholarly enquiry and the issues underlying current disagreements, while advancing research in the relation between the Hebrew Bible and Canaanite religion.

The force and authority of divine law in the Hebrew Bible, with its demand for perfect justice and unfailing obedience, presents a striking contrast with the evidence of personal data preserved in archival and epigraphic sources. This volume explores these intriguing differentials in Neo-Babylonian, Persian, and Graeco-Roman records, as they inform the historical context from which early Christianity and rabbinic Judaism developed in antiquity.

This book is dedicated to the study of the touchpoints between Yahwistic communities throughout the Achaemenid empire and the Iranian attributes of the empire that ruled over them for about two centuries. Its approach is fundamentally interdisciplinary. It brings together scholars of Achaemenid history, literature and religion, Iranian linguistics, historians of the Ancient Near East, archeologists, biblical scholars and Semiticists.

An examination of MT Esther’s relationship to the Joseph story, this study employs an intertextual approach to demonstrate the authorial intent, historical development, and theological purpose of Esther’s interactions with Genesis 37-50. While this work is firmly rooted in the intertextual field, it also contributes to Scroll criticism by demonstrating how Esther’s allusions to Joseph articulate the disputed religious stance of the book.

Tempelweihe; Tempelweihspruch; Salomon; Bundeslade

This study reconstructs the genesis of the story of the temple dedication to trace its historical development. To do so, Part I closes gaps in the basic text-critical research (especially LXX). This is the foundation on which Part II investigates its literary history. The findings show that the historical origins of the story lie not to the age of kings but in the age of the Second Temple.

This volume opens up new perspectives on the developing methodological diversity of Old Testament exegesis. It sets out how it must become radically historical and therefore radically canonical, while revealing the wide-ranging significance of myth, history, and reason in Old Testament writing. Examples of methodological hybridity and exegesis as a transparent, open game flank the concluding sketch of a hermeneutical theory of practice.

While, and precisely because, the cultural and religious heritage of the Southern Levant can no longer be researched as it was in the institute’s early days, this centenary offers a welcome opportunity to acknowledge Dalman’s groundbreaking studies.

How is law established in the Hebrew Bible? This volume carries out text-historical and literary studies investigations to show how law and narrative are interwoven in the Pentateuch and mutually enrich each other’s meaning. It looks at individual text witnesses to illustrate how the contexts of the law’s establishment are refined within the scope of various Torah concepts.

In this insightful study, the dynamics of Judah’s perceived inferiority and desire come to the forefront. The work observes how Judah’s aspiration led them to merge their Abraham narrative with North Israel’s Jacob narrative, a pivotal reorientation of Israel’s past. Drawing parallels with ancient East Asian dynamics, this book offers a unique perspective on Judah’s identity politics and the complex tapestry of Israel’s ancestral past.

Joseph and Aseneth is increasingly used as a source for Judaism and Christianity at the turn of the Common Era. This study moves away from edited versions and returns to the sources to consider how redaction and translation affected its interpretation. Important contributions include the first synoptic edition of the Greek texts, analysis of the Syriac and Armenian translations, and an investigation of four abridged versions of the work.

Hasidic groups have many customs. While Halakha denotes the “bar of holiness” for ordinary Jews, these customs represent the higher threshold expected of Hasidim, meant to justify their title as hasidim (“pious”).

This book analyzes how 19th-century hasidic authors perceived the new norms of their movement. As a test case, it examines a particularly restrictive hasidic norm enacted in the 20th century, sexual abstinence among married men.

This book follows the origins of the Kedushta, a sequence of poems that leads up to the epitome of Jewish prayer, the Kedusha or Sanctus. It tracks back the earliest forms of prayer in late antiquity and by doing so defines the main characteristics of this genre, both from the standpoint of Rhetoric and poetics. This genre draws from Midrash and Mysticism- adjacent literary forms that influence liturgical poetry.

The Yalkut Schimoni compiles Rabbinical interpretations of the Hebrew Bible. The criteria used to select them are still unclear, nor do we know if the volume was conceptualized to act as a comprehensive reference work for exegetical issues, to connect biblical interpretations in the Talmud and Midrash, or to reform the rabbinical interpretative tradition. The translation of this volume is a first step toward answering these questions.

This volume scrutinizes afresh the traditional notion of inspiration. What does it mean to speak of an inspired text when the manuscript evidence reveals that it is fluid? Is there “theology” in the canonical text, in spite of its inner plurality? Should reception be regarded as an integral part of revelation and/or of the inspiration process? Such questions are raised in relation to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Inspiration; Theology; Revelation; Reception

A phenomenology of oaths and vows across religious traditions. Exploring legal, liturgical, ritual and literary works from different eras, it provides a new understanding of the inherently creative force of oaths and vows. Viewing them as deeply generative, it further explores the tension between erotic desire and the taking of oaths in select works of Western and Eastern European literature from the 12th to the 19th centuries.

Sin is a central concept in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Yet it seems hardly comprehensible to secular people. Even within theology, the meaning of sin is often disputed. Where does sin come from? Is man radically corrupted by sin? How does sin relate to man’s redemption, toward which all three religions aim? The book analyzes what is understood by sin in each of the three monotheistic religions and points out commonalities and differences.

Employing Wittgenstein’s insights on language and religion for theology, particularly within interreligious discourse, stands as an enduring research desideratum. This volume is unprecedented in bringing together Jewish, Christian and Muslim perspectives on the grammar of the word ‘God’. It thus unveils fresh horizons for a deeper comprehension of its meaning, illuminating the intersections and disparities among these traditions in this regard.

Although among the various interpretations of Kafka, there is no shortage of readings that consider Kafka’s Judaism as a key lens through which to understand his work, the author attempts something different: not only to recognize in Kafka’s work themes, questions, or problems that are distinctly Jewish but also to propose, in its very approach, a distinct Jewish reading.

Even after the Shoah, Yiddish cultures spanned continents as interconnected communities. They were now marked, however, by the bloc borders of the Cold War. Between 1941 and 1991, Yiddish cultural activists in Eastern Europe worked towards realizing visions of socialist Yiddishlands.

How did translation impact Yiddish literature throughout history? In this volume, twelve distinguished scholars address the question, examining translations from various periods and places, practices of self-translation, collective translation and intermedial translation used by Yiddish writers and intellectuals. They inquire into the transnational and ‘translational’ state of this minority language and of Yiddish literature as world literature.

The works of Stefan Zweig and Franz Werfel focus on the catastrophes that culminated in the horrors of the two world wars, which affected the authors themselves. In order to make sense of their times, these two Austrian-Jewish literary figures directed their attention toward the prophet Jeremiah. This specific Biblical reference did not just become literature – it also allows us to paint a new profile of each of these writers.

Stéphane Mosès explores in Displacements the poetry of Paul Celan and the work of major German-Jewish thinkers in the context of his distinction between normative and critical modernity. The volume contains translations of his books Approches de Paul Celan, Figures philosophiques de la modernité juive, and, alongside Freud, essays on Goethe and Büchner that pursue his engagement with tradition and its fragmentation also beyond the Jewish sphere.

Post-Holocaust Jewish thinkers argue that forgiveness and resentment are crucial in coping with national trauma. This volume offers an analysis – centered on literature and film – of the paradox inherent in the psychological need to act on these two emotions, which are simultaneously conscious and unconscious, intrapsychic and relational. The book provides new perspectives on the historical context surrounding Kraus’ writing during the Third Reich as well as an analysis of the Third Walpurgnis Night. The contributions place Kraus’s work in dialogue with a broader spectrum of critical voices, including Adorno, Klemperer and Arendt. Revisiting Kraus from these new perspectives contributes to a better understanding of this major intellectual of the first half of the 20th century.

Jahrhundert

Works that had a considerable impact on the development of the humanities in the twentieth century emerged against the backdrop of a culture of knowledge and an epistemological history shaped by Judaism. This volume aims to document this development without simply comparing origins, belonging, and styles of thought, instead tracing a textual scholarship that provided new access to literature and literary studies.

This book investigates, for the first time, the multilingual resources contemporary Jewish speakers in Berlin use when speaking German. The focus of this explorative study is on lexical variation and its social meaning from the speakers’ perspective. Through an innovative method, it is shown how shared language ideologies towards Hebrew and Yiddish, but also the individual positioning, shape speakers’ perception of linguistic choices.

CRITICAL VOICES FROM ISRAEL ON OCTOBER 7 AND THE WAR WITH HAMAS

This is the first book focusing on voices which are critical of Israeli government policies. They are deeply grieving and affected by the October 7 attack, while also able to hold both Palestinian and Israeli pain and aspirations not as mutually exclusive. It chronicles the reactions of intellectuals and scholars to unfolding events. All the pieces in this volume have been written in the span of about a month from October 7 and comprise an archive of a particular discourse taking shape in Israel at this historical juncture.

f First volume showcasing the distinctive diversity of critical thought in Israel after October 7.

f Prominent Jewish and Arab-Palestinian scholars from Israel provide critical reflections and analyses on the horrific events of October 7 and the devastating war in Gaza.

f The contributions encompass analytical pieces as well as personal thoughts; addressing issues spanning law, society, philosophy, and simple humanism.

“This is a very timely book…which moves us away from the polarizing binary and opens up a surprising diversity of thought and reflections. It is certainly a shift away from the drums-of-war kind of approach that has dominated popular and academic discussion thus far.”

Oded Haklai, Director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy and Diversity at Queen’s University.

“[This] book illuminates the possibility of holding complex thoughts amid sloganeering and zero-sum accounts of history, grief, ethical outrage, and visions of the future.”

Atalia Omer, Professor of Religion, Conflict, and Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame.

“Since the nightmare that began on October 7, one of few things that has given me hope are those voices from Israel—few though they are—who hold the agony of that day and yet resist a war that only brings more death, rage and despair. I’m so grateful to have their humanity and courage collected in one place.”

This volume explores a pervasive narrative in medieval literature and culture: the Roman destruction of Jerusalem, interpreted by Christians as divine vengeance for Jewish deicide. Vernacular iterations of Jerusalem’s fall were disseminated in medieval England through historiography, hagiography, romance, sermon, and drama. Mixed with biblical prophecy and tales of miracles, the legend was vital in the construction of medieval English identity.

The focus of this cultural history of Germancentralist politics and press in the Austria of the Habsburg Monarchy is political activists of the lesser-known “second generation” of 1848ers. The early biography of journalist and historian Heinrich Friedjung (1851–1920) provides insights into an especially progressive segment of Viennese society in the “Founders Period,” an era ridden with political and economic crises.

These seven studies analyze interpretations of ancient Jewish history by prominent Jewish scholars in the German world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Although focusing on diverse figures and episodes, they all argue that these scholars’ views on the Jews’ responses to Hellenistic and Roman rule, while built upon the ancient sources, were nurtured by contemporary notions concerning the options available to Jews living in a non-Jewish world.

Konvertiten; Wien; Juden; 1868–1914

Before World War I, Vienna became a center for Jewish converts from Austria and abroad. During this period, the Schottenpfarre became the most important convert parish in the Catholic Church and was the place where prominent representatives from art, culture, and scholarship would convert. The basis of this volume is handwritten sources pertaining to baptism that, when compiled, reveal the surprising motivations behind baptism. Converts; Vienna; Jews; 1868–1914

New York City, where many immigrants first arrived in the United States, was home to a large Jewish community, including many who subscribed to radical political views such as Anarchism, Communism, Socialism, and Unionism. In such political movements, Jewish individuals seemed to be dominant. This book addresses how, where, and why Jewish immigrants in the US were radicalized in the 19th and 20th centuries.

While the economic crisis forced patronage to decline during the Weimar Republic, the little market town of Murnau in Upper Bavaria was home to an American Jewish philanthropist who funded social and cultural projects generously. At the same time, Murnau developed into the National Socialist “stronghold of the highlands.” This book examines this gripping relationship. Jewish philanthropy; Weimar Republic; early NSDAP

The second volume on Jewish Frankfurt focuses on National Socialism and the postwar period. After Jewish communities were dissolved during the Nazi period, a new Jewish community was founded in the postwar period under the protection of the US military administration. Later, Frankfurt provided impulses for the new visibility of the Jewish community in the Federal Republic.

To be tainted by the stain of cult, or to enable life and artworks in the first place through the incarnation of ideas and the transcendent –this is the tension encapsulated in debate on the power of images. Images create horror as well as the sacred, and may also banish both. Dealing with ancient and Jewish sites as well as seeking out Christian, Islamic and secular pictorial evidence, the exhibition builds a bridge to the present day.

What is the meaning of the Jewish rites of initiation known as “bar and bat mitzvah” in the modern age, at a time when so many other traditions have fallen by the wayside? These ceremonies have not only been preserved, but are celebrated by more Jewish families and demand greater financial, psychological, and family resources than ever before. The book maps and analyzes the transformation of the rituals and endeavors to understand their meanings.

The dominant Israeli “sabra” culture rejected the image and stereotpye of the weak exilic Jew, widespread around the globe for hundreds of years. However, Israeli culture was open in many ways to different cultural materials and new influences, which led to the rise of various Israeli youth cultures. The authors place Israeli ethnic youth cultures in their historical, cultural, and economic context while analyzing social and ethnic conflicts.

For a brief moment in the history of Acre under the British mandate, there was a Hebrew community, linking old and new settlements. It had a national-Zionist orientation and consisted of Jews of local and Mizrachi origin. Although this is a local story, it sheds light on the complexity and diversity of the Zionist enterprise when it comes to Arab or mixed settlements, and raises questions about the relationship between local and national history.

Mittelalter; Antisemitismus; christlicher Antijudaismus; Deutschland; Wucher

There is a dogged idea that the stereotypical association of Jews with greed, wealth, and usury has to do with their supposed role in the premodern money market. Instead, this study examines the Christian ideas of sinful greed, Jewish materialism, and the role of the traitor’s reward in the “murder of God,” which together condensed into the image of the “Geldjude” – “money Jew” – during the socioeconomic upheavals of the High Middle Ages.

The Therapized Antisemite determines the failure of psychology in the understanding and punishment of antisemitism. Through exploring social, clinical, and forensic psychology, as well as psychohistory and the intrusion of psychology into criminal law and policymaking, Christopher L. Schilling argues that we don’t yet understand what causes antisemitism in psychological terms, let alone how to go about solving the problem.

In 1941 most of Poland’s Jews were living in the General Government, the part of Nazioccupied Poland not annexed to the Reich. Atrocious conditions in forced labour camps and overcrowded ghettos caused mortality to escalate even before autumn 1941, when the territory became a central site of systematic killing. The volume documents the crimes of the German occupiers, Jewish resistance and the responses of the non-Jewish Poles to mass murder.

This intimate history of the Holocaust considers the agency and vulnerability of Jewish men in times of genocide. The gendered experience of men is often hidden, thus conveying the intimate lives of the persecuted demonstrates their specific male experiences. By taking into account sexuality, emotions such as love or honour, and exercises of masculinity provides a nuanced, innovative and novel perspective to the study of the Holocaust.

Arbeit Macht Frei focuses on the representations and interpretations of the infamous phrase in art. The expression is most associated with the National Socialists, who used it at the entrances to six of their concentration camps to misdirect with contempt and irony, and to instill false hope in the minds of prisoners. Batya Brutin discusses Holocaust survivor artists, their descendants as others who use the phrase in their artwork.

This book examines texts written about the Ravensbrück concentration camp between 1945 and 1989, predominantly by women, showing how East and West German narrative patterns about female concentration camp internment were established. Sina Meißgeier analyzes literary portrayals of political imprisonment, revealing that, even during the DDR, there were texts that demonstrated ruptures in the traditional antifascist myth. The Cold War influenced how people, societies and states dealt with the Holocaust and its aftereffects. This book challenges previous perceptions that the democratic West embraced commemoration while the totalitarian East did not. Its contributions show how political interests shaped commemoration on both sides of the Iron Curtain and how individual actors carved out space to remember the Holocaust beyond the dominant narratives.

For the first time, the database offers the complete and edited diaries of Victor Klemperer, the chronicler of 20th century German history. From 1918 until 1959, the Romance philologist and converted Jew chronicled the process of disenfranchisement of the Jews and at the same time documented day-to-day life from the Weimar Republic until the early days of the GDR. The digital edition contains transcriptions and facsimiles of the originals. German and German-Jewish History; Weimar Republic; National Socialism; GDR; History of Sciences

ENGLISH A UGUST 2024 DEUTSCHER KUNSTVERLAG / DE GRUYTER /  MAGNES PRESS

For four decades, Vivienne Silver-Brody has collected photographs of Palestine/Eretz Israel taken from the nineteenth century until the turn of the 21st, creating a multi-faceted photographic narrative of the land. This book presents some three hundred of the most striking photographs.

The diversified perspectives, landscapes, portraits, lifestyles, dress,

A unique voice that reaches beyond politics and religion

Presents a photographic history of the Land of Israel as a shared place rather than as disputed territory

Photographs by Yaacov Ben Dov, Alfons Himmelreich, Hanna Safieh, Drora Spitz, Moi Ver among others

traditions, and customs manifest in this album, bring to life the history of photography of this land, which is one shared by the peoples that call it home. For the last section of the book, Silver-Brody invited sixty individuals—photographers, scholars, artists, curators, and collectors from different religious, cultural, and national backgrounds—to choose a single

photograph and to write a short essay relating to it. These texts together offer a fascinating narrative, thus adding significant historical relevance. .

Vivienne Silver-Brody, is a photo-historian, collector and curator
