The Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik is the oldest mathematics periodical in the world. Founded in 1826 by August Leopold Crelle, and edited by him until his death in 1855, it soon became widely known under the name of Crelle’s Journal. In the 195 years of its existence, Crelle’s Journal has developed into an outstanding scholarly periodical with one of the largest circulations among mathematics journals. It belongs to the very top mathematics periodicals, as listed in Clarivate’s Journal Citation Report.

STUDIES IN MATHEMATICS
Edited by Carsten Carstensen, Gavril Farkas, Nicola Fusco, Fritz Gesztesy, Niels Jacob, Zenghu Li, Guozhen Lu, Karl-Hermann Neeb, Rene Schilling and Volkmar Welker
The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level.
The series De Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 35 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics.
While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathemati cians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community.

This volume introduces noncommutative in tegration theory on semifinite von Neumann algebras and the theory of singular traces for symmetric operator spaces. Deeper aspects of the association between measurability, poles and residues of spectral zeta functions, and asymptotics of heat traces are studied, includ ing the integration of quantum differentials, measures on fractals, and Connes’ formula on the Hochschild class of the Chern character.

This is the first complete monograph dedi cated to singular traces. For mathematician the text offers, due to Kalton’s contribution, a complete theory of traces on symmetrically normed ideals of compact operators, updated in this edition on the Pietsch correspondence. For mathematical physicists and other users of Connes’ noncommutative geometry the text offers a complete reference to Dixmier traces and the mathematical features of singu lar traces.

Spaces of homogeneous type were introduced as a generalization to the Euclidean space and serve as a sufficient setting in which one can generalize the classical isotropic Harmonic analysis and function space theory. This set ting is sometimes too general, and the theory is limited. Here, we present a set of flexible ellipsoid covers of Rn that replace the Euclid ean balls and support a generalization of the theory with fewer limitations.

The study of minimal surfaces is an impor tant subject in differential geometry, and Nevanlinna theory is a classical subject in complex analysis. This book discusses the interaction between these two subjects. In particular, it describes the study of the value distribution properties of the Gauss map of minimal surfaces through Nevanlinna theory, a project initiated by the prominent differen tial geometers Shiing-Shen Chern and Robert Osserman.

The term “stereotype space” was introduced in 1995 and is used for a category of locally convex spaces with surprisingly elegant prop erties. Its study gives an unexpected point of view on functional analysis that brings this field closer to other main branches of math ematics, namely, to algebra and geometry.

Quantized canonical transformations were introduced by Fock, Hörmander, and Maslov and play an important role in quantum mechanics and the theory of hyperbolic equa tions. There is a recent interest in applica tions of quantized canonical transformations in elliptic theory motivated by problems in Connes’ noncommutative geometry and nonlocal problems in mathematical phys ics. This book thoroughly describes these developments.

Tropical Mathematics built on Idempotent Semi-Rings and Dioids permits an extension of the usual Linear methods to Non-Linear problems and provides powerful analyz ing and computing in Theoretical Physics and Applied Mathematics. Until recently, solutions in mathematics and physics were organized around algebraic structures such as groups, rings, and fields. These techniques are not well-suited to modeling and solving non-linear problems.

The introduction of cross diffusivity opens many questions in the theory of reactiondiffusion systems. This book will be the first to investigate such problems presenting new findings for researchers interested in studying parabolic and elliptic systems where classical methods are not applicable. In addition, The Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality involving BMO norms is improved and new techniques are covered that will be of interest.

This work is devoted to fixed point theory as well as the theory of accretive operators in Banach spaces. The goal is to develop, in self-contained way, the main results in both theories. Special emphasis is given to the study how both theories can be used to study the existence and uniqueness of solution of several types of partial differential equations and integral equations.

Metamaterials are advanced materials which have properties that don’t occur naturally and are difficult to replicate. Metamaterials’complicated microstruc tures make them challenging to study and require the use of sophisticated mathematical techniques. This book uses a rigorous, fromfirst-principles approach (based on boundary integral methods) to study the field of graded metamaterials that can be designed to act as cochlea-inspired sensors.

First-order logic studies mathematical struc tures one can describe in a particular formal language and is suited for studying algebraic and discrete objects. Continuous logic is an extension of this logic and is better suited for studying structures in analysis. This book provides examples of how techniques from continuous logic can be used to study objects in an area of analysis known as operator algebras.

This book derives new Hardy inequalities with double singular weights – at an interior point and on the boundary of the domain. We focus on the optimality of Hardy constant and on the sharpness of Hardy inequality. Applications include: results about existence\ nonexistence and controllability for parabolic equations with double singular potentials; estimates from below of the first eigenvalue of p-Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Provides a mathematical perspective to some key elements of so-called deep neural net works (DNNs). Much of the interest on deep learning has focused on the implementation of DNN-based algorithms. This textbook focuses on a complementary point of view that emphasizes the underlying mathematical ideas.
