The images on our catalogues are the product of a design competition that is carried out each year by De Gruyter in cooperation with Lette Verein Berlin, a vocational training association. Participants designed a series of images that visually interpret the topic “impulse”. We would like to thank the Jonas Leue for his winning entry. ASHKENAZIC JEWS AND THE BIBLICAL ISRAELITES

WILHELM HERZBERG’S JEWISH FAMILY PAPERS (1868)

The Early Demographic Development of East European Ashkenazis

Interdisciplinary Readings of a Forgotten Bestseller

What is the connection between Ashkenazic Jews and the inhabitants of the kingdom of Judah and of Israel? How was the origin of Ashkenzic Jewry influenced by the rabbinical switch from a patrilineal to matrilineal society including converts? How important were the Khazars? This book will use mainly archaeological, historical, and genetic data to try to answer these and other questions pertaining to the origin of East European Ashkenazic Jewry.

Wilhelm Herzberg’s novel Jewish Family Papers, which was first published under a pseudonym in 1868, was one of the bestselling German-Jewish books of the 19th century. Through interdisciplinary readings, this bilingual volume represents the first attempt to discuss this forgotten bestseller, embedding it within various contemporary discourses: religion, literature, emancipation, nationalism, culture, transnationalism, gender, and philosophy.

THE MAKING OF ERETZ ISRAEL IN THE MODERN ERA

JEWISH RADICALISMS

ANTISEMITISM IN THE NORTH

Historical Perspectives on a Phenomenon of Global Modernity

History and State of Research

A Historical-Geographical Study (1799–1949)

Radical thoughts and acts are merely a nonconformist attitude; they are usually marginal and are directed against the ruling society. Thereby, these radical thoughts and acts could be classified as politcally left or right, progressive or reactionary. The volume wants to sharpen the term “Jewish Radicalism” and provide different perspectives on the historical phenomenon and its dimensions.

CO-PUBLICATION WITH MAGNES PRESS

Napoleon’s invasion of the Middle East and Palestine marks the beginning of the modern era in the region. The aim of this book is to trace the developments that led to the making of a new separate geographical-political entity in the Middle East known as Eretz Israel, and to the establishment of the State of Israel within its boundaries. The time frame of this study spans from Napoleon’s invasion of Eretz Israel/Palestine in 1799 to 1948-1949. Erez Israel; Palestine; Israel; Zionism; Middle East; Napoleon

Compared to other minorities, Jews and anti-Jewish stereotypes remain relatively underresearched in Scandinavia, even though antisemitic stereotypes have been present in the North ever since Christianization. This volume aims to bring the study of antisemitism to the fore, from the Middle Ages to the present day. XANTI SCHAWINSKY Vom Bauhaus in die Welt. From the Bauhaus into the World

Xanti Schawinsky (1904–1979) was a master of improvisation – in stage design, photography, exhibition structures, and large-format photomontages. This book focuses on his early work, in which he shows himself to be an innovative photographer and a pioneer of modern design. New documents from his literary estate allow a frank look at the protagonists of the Bauhaus school in Dessau. Exil; Diaspora; Migration

The term ‘post-exile’ is a complex composition that combines the seemingly contradictory on two different levels, place and time. While the term marks the end of exile, it nevertheless implies a continuation of its experience. This volume focuses on different facets of how post-exile has been addressed and culturally negotiated in a range of linguistic, geographical, and historical contexts Exile; diaspora; migration

The Cultural Experience of Exile, Place and Displacement among Jews and Others

Homeland, Exile, Imagined Homelands are features of the modern experience and relate to the cultural and historical dilemmas of loss, nostalgia, utopia, travel, longing, and are central for Jews and others. This book is an exploration into a world of boundary crossings and of desired places and alternate identities, into a world of adopted kin and invented allegiances. DIE DOMUS CONVERSORUM UND DIE KONVERTITEN DES KÖNIGS

JUDEN OHNE PÄPSTE

[The Domus Conversorum and the King’s Converts: Welfare, Prevention, and Jewish Conversion in Medieval England]

PROGNOSTICATION IN THE MEDIEVAL WORLD A Handbook

This handbook offers the first systematic overview of methods and contexts of prognostication in Europe and the Mediterranean between 500 and 1500. The practices of medieval prophets and astrologers seem to form a contrast to today’s search for trends and future technologies. Closer inspection reveals much common ground regarding the contingencies of decisions, the desire to understand patterns, and doubts about the reliability of predictions. Prognostication; Middle Ages; transculturality

Konversion; Judentum; Heinrich III.; Eduard I.

In many respects, the Domus Conversorum, the converts’ house in London, was a unique institution. Founded in 1232 by King Henry III, it was dedicated to the welfare of Jews who had converted to Christianity, thereby forfeiting all of their worldly possessions. Converts were in a very precarious situation. This study addresses English conversion policies in general and examines the role of the Domus Conversorum in the care and welfare of converts. [Jews Without Popes: Inclusion and Anti-Semitism between Rome and Avignon]

Jüdische Geschichte; Mittelalter; Italien

When the papal seat moved from Rome to Avignon in 1309, this meant the end of the remarkable economic cooperation between the Papal curia and Jewish traders. Unlike France, where the monarchy was a catalyst for anti-Jewish prejudice, in Italy, Jews were part of narratives of communal belonging. The study provides a new perspective on the history of Jewish-Papal relations in the Middle Ages. Jewish history; Middle Ages; Italy

“THE COMPASSIONATE AND BENEVOLENT”: JEWISH RULING ELITES IN THE MEDIEVAL ISLAMICATE WORLD

THY FATHER’S INSTRUCTION

DER HOFJUDE BEREND LEHMANN (1661–1730)

Alexandria as a Case Study

This is a monograph about the medieval Jewish community of the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria. Through deep analyses of contemporary historical sources, mostly documents from the Cairo Geniza, life stories, conducts and practices of private people are revealed. When put together these private biographies convey a social portrait of an elite group which ruled over the local community, but was part of a supra communal network. Reading the Nuremberg Miscellany as Jewish Cultural History

The Nuremberg Miscellany is a unique work of scribal art, rich with paint and powdered gold. It was penned and illustrated in southern Germany in 1589 by Eliezer b. Mordechai the Martyr. The book is a compilation of religious Hebrew texts, which was probably created as a father’s wedding gift to his son. The text and the naïve illustrations are a treasure of Jewish lore and a veritable reflection of contemporary life of an affluent Jewish family. The financier Berend Lehmann ranks among the grandest and most controversial personalities in early modern Jewish history. As Augustus the Strong’s “court Jew,” he had a major role in Augustus’ acquisition of the Polish crown. Lehmann was admired by Jews as a saintly patriarch and benefactor while being defamed by anti-Semites as a usurer. SALOMON MAIMON’S THEORY OF INVENTION

THE CONCEPT OF ‹RUACH RA’AH› IN CONTEMPORARY RABBINIC RESPONSA (1945–2000)

KONVERSION UND INTEGRATION

Scientific Genius, Analysis and Euclidean Geometry

How can we invent new certain knowledge in a methodical manner? Chikurel argues that Maimon’s contribution to the ars inveniendi tradition lies in the methods of invention, applied on Euclidean geometry, and in his notion of analysis as grounded both on intuition and the principle of contradiction. Centering around methodical invention and scientific genius, Maimon’s work is unique in an era glorifying the artistic genius, known as Geniezeit.

Possible Relations between Knowledge of the Physical World and Traditional Knowledge in Rabbinic Judaism

This book provides insight into the world of the Rabbinic Responsa Literature. The texts presented were written by orthodox rabbis in the period of 1945-2000. The volume analyzes what happens to a ritual based on ancient texts, in which magic, premodern science and metaphysics coalesce, when it is transferred to the modern world. An in-depth analysis of the texts shows how issues of identity, gender and modernity are addressed in an indirect way.

[Conversion and Integration: Conversions from Judaism to Lutheranism in the Early Modern Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg] Konversionen vom Judentum zum Luthertum im frühneuzeitlichen Herzogtum Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg

Konversion; Mission; Glaubenswechsel; Integration

Using extensive new, mostly manuscript sources, this study investigates the themes of conversion and social integration of Jews converting to Lutheranism in the 17th and 18th centuries in the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Alongside the educated converts whose lives have been documented previously, the author also analyzes men and women from other social classes and traces a number of their life histories following baptism. Rabbis; community; society; Poland; Lithuania;

Russia; Eastern Europe

Centralverein; Antisemitismus; Nationalsozialismus

The Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith (C.V.) was founded in 1893 in response to anti-Semitism. It attempted to counter hostility through education and legal resistance. Although the C.V. was among the largest Jewish organizations, it has been largely ignored by scholars. This volume examines the C.V. in its work of resistance, as an intellectual movement and as a political actor. Centralverein; anti-Semitism; National Socialism

CHINA AND ASHKENAZIC JEWRY: TRANSCULTURAL ENCOUNTERS

ARMENIAN AND JEWISH EXPERIENCE BETWEEN EXPULSION AND DESTRUCTION

CORPUS PAPYRORUM JUDAICARUM

In the past thirty years, the Sino-Jewish encounter in modern China has increasingly garnered scholarly and popular attention. This volume will be the first to focus on the transcultural exchange between Ashkenazic Jewry and China. The essays here investigate how this exchange of texts and translations, images and ideas, has enriched both Jewish and Chinese cultures and prepared for a global, inclusive world literature.

Jews and Armenians share a similar fate: Not only were both groups forced into statelessness and a life outside their homelands. In the 20th century, in the shadow of war, they were threatened with collective annihilation. The conference “We Will Live After Babylon” (Hanover 2019) was one of the first initiatives to deal with both Jewish and Armenian historical experiences. The contributions in this volume take on multidisciplinary approaches.

Jewish-Jewish Encounters in History and Literature

Hebrew Maps of the Land of Israel from Rashi to the Early 20th Century

Jüdische Bibelexegese zwischen Griechen und Ägyptern unter Ptolemaios VI. Philometor JETZT IN PAPERBACK

Unter Ptolemaios VI. Philometor (180–145 v. Alexandria; Antikes Judentum; Bibelexegese; Hellenismus

During the reign of Ptolemaios VI Philometor (180–145 BCE), the Jewish author Aristobulos wrote an extensive text that he addressed to the ruler personally, which dealt with the correct interpretation of the Pentateuch. The few preserved fragments still offer multifaceted insights on the early phase of Jewish exegesis – 200 years before Philo, in the conflicted world of the Alexandrine Greeks and Egyptians.

Sephardic and Ashkenazic Judaism have long been studied separately. Yet, scholars are becoming ever more aware of the need to merge them into a single field of Jewish Studies. This volume opens new perspectives and bridges traditional gaps. Topics range from religious art and literature to identity constructions, daily interactions, and mutual perceptions. All the authors include both Sephardic and Ashkenazic perspectives into their reflections.

Entangled History; Jewish History

Jewish maps of the Holy Land have been drawn by Jewish scholars as part of biblical and rabbinical literature and within early modern Jewish scholarship, but their development has been neglected in scientific literature. This book fills the lacuna. It tracks two parallel courses of development: traditional depictions of the borders in simple sketches following Rahi’s tradition, and artistic pictorial maps which followed European-Christian models.

The interdisciplinary volume explores translation as a central Jewish cultural practice. Starting with the early translations of the Torah, the book engages with the role of translation in the life in the Diaspora and the project of Jewish state-building. The essays in this collection trace the story of how translation nourished Jewish culture, cast bridges to the Christian or Muslim world, and defined the boundary between the self and the Other. [Minorities and Majorities: Exploring Religious Complexity in Medieval Afro-Eurasia] Erkundungen religiöser Komplexität im mittelalterlichen Afro-Eurasien

Today, we think of the monotheistic religions as causes of violence and intolerance. Yet tolerance of other monotheistic groups was the custom in the Christian and Islamic territories of Eurasia in the Middle Ages. What was the balance between religious distancing and social and cultural interconnection? Recent research has suggested many answers to this question, and they are systematically presented in this volume. Monotheism; history of religion; Middle Ages

What can we learn from a sex scene about the culture and society that produced it? This book looks at how the first sex scenes on the Israeli screen in the 1960s and 1970s negotiate questions of collective identity, individual agency, and the private and public realms in view of the historical events that marked these decades in Israel. By doing so, it opens up a new perspective on the history of Israeli film. Israel; Cinema; Sex; Israeli film

Since the Enlightenment, German-speaking Jews have built an impressive cultural heritage. But the persecution and extermination of the Jewish people during the Nazi era together with emigration since the 1930s destroyed, fragmented or scattered much of this extensive German-Jewish heritage. This database compiles and collects bio-bibliographic information on more than 20,000 German-speaking Jews who were leading figures in literature, philosophy, religion, art, music and politics. Based on the Archiv Bibliographia Judaica in Frankfurt am Main founded by Renate Heuer, the database is a unique document of German-Jewish heritage. Users can search biographical information on over 20,000 individuals using precise criteria, as well as study their bibliographies on linked and scanned index cards. The complete database is intended to give a comprehensive overview of all of the writings or documents written by German-speaking Jews. In addition, the database integrates even more detailed biographical and bibliographical information on 1,300 authors included in the printed Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren [Encyclopedia of German-Jewish Authors]. The database is the only resource to offer this information in a structured, searchable format. An interface to open-access sources links the bio-bibliographic content to useful full texts.

JEWISH ASPECTS IN AVANT-GARDE

THE VISITATION OF HANNAH ARENDT

CANONIZATION AND ALTERITY

Between Rebellion and Revelation NOW IN PAPERBACK

This volume deals with the significance of the avant-garde(s) for modern Jewish culture and the impact of the Jewish tradition on the artistic production of the avant-garde, be they reinterpretations of literary, artistic, philosophical or theological texts/traditions, or novel theoretical openings linked to elements from Judaism or Jewish culture, thought, or history.

The book presents an aesthetic-semiotic reading of Arendt by traversing the ensemble of her work. An attempt is made to literally enact Arendt’s notion of “natality”. Arendt is invited here to pay visitations to four figures: a student, the poetess, Stefan Zweig and Michal, Saul’s daughter. The intellectual visitation, as a complex process of both mimesis and rejection, is revealed to be a natality, a rebirth in spirit. Hannah Arendt; rebirth; philosophy; Judaism

The posthumous publication of Levinas’s wartime diaries, postwar lectures, and drafts for two novels afford new approaches to understanding the relationship between literature, philosophy, and religion. This volume gathers an international list of experts to examine new questions raised by Levinas’s deep and creative experiment in thinking at the intersection of literature, philosophy, and religion.

For secular, well-educated society, the “countryside” has always been a projection screen for desires and aversions. Almut Laufer examines the narrative traces left by rural Jewish communities by considering the texts of non-Jewish authors of the late Enlightenment and Counter-Enlightenment and the stories of Jewish authors of the 19th and early 20th centuries that reflect inner Jewish discourse.

PURIMSPIEL UND FASTNACHTSPIEL

«HE SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO HIS WIFE!»

[Purim Plays and Shrovetide Plays: Interdisciplinary Essays on an Intersection of Genres] Interdisziplinäre Beiträge zur Gattungsinterferenz

Purim; Fastnacht; Fastnachtspiel; Theater

The volume examines for the first time the intersection of genres between Purim plays and Shrovetide plays. The approximate temporal coincidence of the Jewish Purim festival and Christian Shrovetide in the liturgical calendar as well as the common enactment of a world turned upside-down suggest the possibility of mutual influences. The interdisciplinary essays are intended to stimulate further research. Purim; German Fastnachtspiel; Medieval Theater

The Construction of Women’s Roles in German and Yiddish Pre-modern ‘Wigalois’ Adaptations

DISSEMINATING JEWISH LITERATURES Knowledge, Research, Curricula

Through the lens of female agency, this study offers new insights into three adaptation of Wigalois, an Arthurian romance telling the stories about Sir Gawein’s son. Comparing the popular Middle High German Wigalois (1215), the Early New High German Wigoleis (15th ct.) and the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) this book offers a completely new perspective on this unique Arthurian tradition that overcomes cultural and lingual borders. DISCUSSING THE FAITH Multilingual and Metalinguistic Conversations about Religion

This volume is an innovative analysis of language in use in multilingual, multiparty interreligious dialogues. Using extensive ethnographic and interactional data taken from diverse dialogue settings, Sauer Bredvik takes an emergent path to demonstrate how speakers use their varied languages in co-occurrence with unfilled pauses, disfluency phenomena, and pragmatic markers (metalinguistic indicators) to co-create dialogue outcomes.

This volume records the situation of the Jews in Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France from the German invasion in spring 1940 to summer 1942. The sources document how Jews were isolated, stripped of their rights and their livelihoods, and targeted for deportation. They also detail attempts to escape persecution, along with the perpetrators’ strategies for a ‘final solution’ and the reactions of the non-Jewish population.

The Case of the North Caucasus

[The Future of Memory: Perspectives on the Remembrance of National Socialism and the Shoah]

The monograph analyses the variety of Holocaust memory forms in the North Caucasus in South Russia from the time of the liberation of the region in 1943 till today, using the concept of a Holocaust memory dispositif. Each chapter emerges from independent research localized in one region. At the end the reader receives a very complex picture of the variety of remembering practices in the state with officially almost no Holocaust memory. SpatioTemporality / RaumZeitlichkeit 11

Starting with the remembrance of the November Pogrom of 1938, this volumes traces changes in the cultural memory of the Shoah and the history of Jewish life in Germany. It also examines recent developments in the debates about public remembrance, in cultural memory studies, and in the culture of remembrance, with a focus on the future forms and contents of memory.

This volume focuses on the digital transformation of remembrance culture for the Nazi era. The contributors’ studies and project presentations from the areas of scholarship and memorial work address the conventions of digital remembrance. Moreover, they examine the place of memorials in current debates about renewing the ways memory is conveyed.

ANTISEMITISMUS IM 21. JAHRHUNDERT

HANDBOOK OF POLISH, CZECH AND SLOVAK HOLOCAUST FICTION

Two Educators in the Abysses of History

Works and Contexts

The twentieth century left humanity in despair, facing its ability to inflict suffering and death. Two educators, children’s rights advocate Janusz Korczak (murdered in Treblinka, 1942) and Yitzhak Katzenelson, Bible teacher and a poet (murdered in Auschwitz, 1944), responded in different ways to the same reality. A comparative study of their legacies helps us to understand of the role of educators in times of social crisis, terror and genocide.

The Handbook presents literary fiction works on the Holocaust in three Slavic languages. It contains more than 120 articles including an introduction dealing with Holocaust literature in the broader context. The publication will become a standard reference book at universities and in public libraries, and will be useful to everyone interested in the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, World War II, and Jewish-related literature.

[Antisemitism in the 21st Century: The Virulence of an Old Hatred in the Era of Islamism and Terrorism] Virulenz einer alten Feindschaft in Zeiten von Islamismus und Terror JETZT IN PAPERBACK

Antisemitismus; Antizionismus; Islamismus

In recent years, there has been a tangible radicalization of antisemitism, which has had pernicious consequences, including deadly terrorist attacks. At the same time, the threshold for accepting antisemitic resentment has been lowered, to the extent that such resentment is camouflaged as “criticism of Israel.” The volume is devoted to different aspects of current antisemitism, and discusses its mobilization potential.

DER NACHLASS PAUL DE LAGARDE [The Legacy of Paul de Lagarde: Orientalist Networks and Anti-Semitic Connections] Orientalistische Netzwerke und antisemitische Verflechtungen OPEN ACCESS

Based on the legacy and published works of the Göttingen orientalist Paul de Lagarde (1827–1891), the contributors to this volume undertake a historical inventory of his life and scientific work, including its political aspects, especially Lagarde’s anti-Semitism. Besides describing the history of German Ancient Near Eastern Studies, the book also furnishes a broader context against the backdrop of then-prevalent “völkisch” ideology.

BEYOND TOLERANCE AND PREJUDICE Jewish and Protestant Responses to Violence in Post-Reformation Cracow

The book analyzes post-conflict responses of religious minorities – Jews and Protestants – to violent attacks by the Cracovian Catholic majority in the age of religious distress following the Reformation. While testing the boundaries of interreligious coexistence, it challenges the regnant paradigm of Polish religious tolerance and cogently shows its true nature lies in the ability to overcome crises rather than prevent violence. [The Restitution of the Ullstein Verlag (1945–52): Remigration, Intrigue, Restoration: A Traditional Berlin Publisher’s Difficult Path] Remigration, Ränke, Rückgabe: Der steinige Weg einer Berliner Traditionsfirma OPEN ACCESS

Rethinking Antisemitism, Race, and Gender

The book is a compilation of texts by prestigious scholars from different disciplines in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. Its objective is to revisit Jean-Paul Sartre’s Réflexions sur la Question Juive seventy years after its publication locating it within the setting of two other pioneering – and we argue, related – publications, namely Simone De Beauvoir’s Le deuxième sexe of 1949 and Franz Fanon’s Peau noire et masques blancs of 1952. Besatzungspolitik

After the end of the Second World War, the Ullstein family fought to reclaim the publishing house that they were forced to sell in 1934. But the Americans needed the company’s printing plant in the Tempelhof district of Berlin for their reeducation program, and as a result delayed its restitution. At the same time, the Berlin senate feared reviving the Ullsteins’ legendary publishing house would spark a newspaper war in West Berlin.

VISUAL ANTISEMITISM IN CENTRAL EUROPE

COMPLICATED COMPLICITY

Daniela Henke, Tom Vanassche (Hrsg./Eds.)

Imagery of Hatred

European Collaboration with Nazi Germany During the Second World War

In what way has anti-Semitism influenced fine art and visual culture in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day? Is there an embedded anti-Semitic iconography? Why does visual anti-Semitism arise today? The volume deals also with questions of how to write about the visual history of anti-Semitism and exhibit anti-Semitic works to the public without contributing to the support of hate movements.

Visual anti-Semitism; Central Europe; Arts and

During World War II, collaboration with the German occupiers became the norm in the occupied countries and satellite states. The consequence was the wide-scale surrender particularly of the Jewish population and the rapid implementation of their deportation. What were the motives, manifestations and spectrum of actions of European collaboration? In times of increasing historical revisionism, such sensitive questions are of special relevance.

Erinnerung; Gedenken; Shoah

In this volume, 18 authors seek to answer the question of whether the memory of genocide, persecution, and structural violence can contribute to solidarity between different groups of victims, and what the epistemological and ethical boundaries of such commemoration might be. The contributions focus on the new Shoah remembrance in a century already marked by incipient geopolitical and biopolitical changes of considerable magnitude. Memory; remembrance; Shoah

OPFERNARRATIVE IN TRANSNATIONALEN KONTEXTEN [Victim Narratives in Transnational Contexts] OPEN ACCESS

This edited volume examines the representation of victims beyond the categories of the “victim cult,” self-victimization, and the victim–perpetrator dichotomy. Adopting a transnational perspective, it mainly considers literature written after 1989, leveraging concepts of dialogical and multidirectional memory to facilitate differentiated perspectives in the politics of memory regarding the highly charged figure of the victim. Victim narratives; contemporary literature; transnational memory; transnationality

DIE SHOAH IN DER GRAFISCHEN LITERATUR SEIT 2000 [The Shoah in Comics Since 2000]

Comics/Holocaust; Erinnerungskultur; Comicforschung; Generationenwandel

How do comics approach the memory of the Shoah? And how has a new generation of authors, too young to remember the Holocaust, expressed its memory in panels of images and speech balloons? This study offers an original theory of comics as a medium of cultural memory based on the most important works of the past two decades, and explains what makes this genre so fascinating for the culture of remembrance. Mit Beitrag v./With contrib. by Mathias Listl

How did National Socialism impact Kunsthalle Mannheim? This question informs the permanent exhibition housed in the museum’s new building, which opened in 2018. The exhibition sheds light on the loss of over 500 works that were seized as “degenerate art” in 1937. It also explores the lives of five Jewish families from Mannheim who, as donors, remained associated with the museum after 1945, despite flight and expulsion. OUR COURAGE JEWS IN EUROPE 1945–48 Publication to the correspondent exhibition by the Jewish Museum Frankfurt

THE JEWISH MUSEUM FRANKFURT is the first municipal Jewish Museum in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1988. It maintains two historical locations, Museum Judengasse and Rothschild-Palais. From 2015 until 2020 these two locations were re-conceptionalized, restored and enlarged by a new building. The new Jewish Museum Frankfurt enables to experience the diversity of municipal Jewish culture throughout history and in the present. THE EXHIBITION explores Jewish experiences of escape and expulsion in Europe directly after the war. It fills the entire exhibition space on the lower level of the new “Lichtbau” extension building, designed by Staab Architekten. THE CATALOG features articles based on the conference “Building from Ashes. Jews in Postwar Europe (19451950)”. It is available in English and German.

After the Shoah, Jewish survivors actively took control of their destiny. Despite catastrophic and hostile circumstances, they built networks and communities, fought for justice, and documented Nazi crimes. The essays, illustrations, and portraits of people and places contained in this volume are informed by a pan-European perspective. The book accompanies the second temporary exhibition at the re-opened Jewish Museum Frankfurt starting in March 2021.

SCRIBES AS SAGES AND PROPHETS Scribal Traditions in Biblical Wisdom Literature and in the Book of the Twelve

The essays in this book discuss the mutual influence of prophetic texts and wisdom texts on each other through the time of the emergence of the literature of Ancient Israel. The biblical texts under consideration range from the Book of the Twelve Prophets on the prophetic side to those biblical texts, which most exegetes would call Wisdomtexts: Proverbs, Qohelet, Job, Ben Sira and Wisdom of Solomon plus the extra-canonical text 4QInstruction. THE LAST DAYS OF THE KINGDOM OF ISRAEL NOW IN PAPERBACK

What was the status of the Kingdom of Israel after its annexation by Assyria in 732 BCE? Who conquered Samaria, the capital of the Kingdom? When did it happen? Leading scholars from different fields of research discuss these questions and thus shed light on this crucial period, which possibly triggered the birth of “new Israel” in the Southern Kingdom of Judah, and eventually led to the formation of the Hebrew Bible and its underlying theology.

A synchronic analysis of Jr: how can the oracles intended to secondary characters be interpreted in their narrative context? Linking the literary forms of narration and reported speech, and choosing between various characters theories, this book discovers that the “character-effect” is limited and calls for a solution situated out of the fabula to the puzzle created by the narration. This ultimately renews the theological category of Revelation.

POLITISCHE THEOLOGIE IM FRÜHEN JUDENTUM

DIE KOMPOSITION DER CHRONIKBÜCHER

Richard J. Bautch, Joachim Eck, Burkard M. Zapff (Eds.)

[Political Theology in Early Judaism: An Analysis of the Five Versions of the Book of Esther] Eine Analyse der fünf Versionen des Estherbuches

Esther; Politische Theologie; Septuaginta; Vetus Latina

Each of the five versions of the story of Esther appeared as a separate attempt at early Jewish identity formation in the period between the 4th century BCE and the end of the 1st century CE. This study makes a major contribution to scholarship, especially with regard to the Old Latin version of the Book of Esther, published in an appendix for the first time in German translation. [The Composition of the Books of Chronicles: Editorial Historical Studies of 2 Chr 10–36] Redaktionsgeschichtliche Studien zu 2 Chr 10–36

The Books of Chronicles are generally considered the works of a single author, who attempts a canonical synthesis of the Hebrew Bible. This study examines the history of King Judas (2 Chr 10–36) to reach a different conclusion. The Chronicles were revised across the books. The texts of the Chronicles should now be understood as historically evolved documents, which document a historical transformation of theology.

THE FORMATION OF THE TALMUD

ETHNICITY IN THE ANCIENT WORLD – DID IT MATTER?

Scholarship and Politics in Yitzhak Isaac Halevy’s Dorot Harishonim OPEN ACCESS

This book examines the talmudic writings, politics, and ideology of Y.I. Halevy (1847–1914), one of the most influential representatives of the pre-war Eastern European Orthodox Jewish community. It analyzes Halevy’s historical model of the formation of the Babylonian Talmud, which, he argued, was edited by an academy of rabbis. That model also served as a blueprint for the rabbinic council of Agudath Israel, the political movement he founded. Talmud; Wissenschaft des Judentums; Jewish History; Eastern Europe

Ari Bergmann, Yeshiva University, New York, USA.

This study approaches the topic of ethnicity through the lenses of the ancients themselves rather than through the imposition of modern categories. It takes into account the expressions and attitudes of a wide variety of Greek, Roman, Jewish, and early Christian sources. A central issue guides the course of the work: did ancient writers reflect upon collective identity as determined by common origins or by shared traditions and culture?

GESCHICHTE ISRAELS UND JUDAS IM ALTERTUM [The History of Israel and Judah in Antiquity]

The authors develop a new viewpoint on the ancient history of Israel and Judah by examining social and economic conditions, contemporary inscriptions, and archeological and iconographic sources as a basis for biblical exegesis and theology. In this way, the authors uncover the backdrop for the great biblical narrative, created as a collective memory since Persian period in Jerusalem, Babylonia, and the sanctuary on Mount Gerizim.

NOTIONS OF TIME IN DEUTEROCANONICAL AND COGNATE LITERATURE

THE SAMARITAN PENTATEUCH

DREAMS, VISIONS, IMAGINATIONS Jewish, Christian and Gnostic Views of the World to Come

The volume focuses on the origins, provenance, and social function of ancient Jewish and Christian apocalyptic texts, including so-called ‘Gnostic,’ writings. In different strands of ancient Judaism, early Christianity as well as in Gnosticism, Manichaeism, and Islam, these texts played an important role. A characteristic feature is their interpretation of history, based on the knowledge about the upper, divine realm and the world to come.

This Yearbook discusses notions and concepts of time. Specialists in their field contribute with analyses that cover wisdom texts (Ben Sira, Tobit, Wisdom of Solomon), Rabbinic sources, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and early Christian Historiography. Furthermore, they address different models of time and examine problems of historiography, the creation of time and space as well as questions of terminology and semantics.

A Critical Editio Maior

Stefan Schorch (Hrsg./Ed.)

VOLUME I: GENESIS

Hebräisch; Pentateuch; Samaritaner; Textkritik

A critical edition of the Samaritan Pentateuch is one of the most urgent desiderata of Hebrew Bible research. This volume is the second out of a series of five meant to fill this gap. The text from the oldest mss. of SP is continuously accompanied by comparative readings, gathered from the Samaritan Targum and the oral reading, as well as MT, the DSS, the LXX, the Peshitta, and the Vulgate, creating an indispensable resource for Biblical research. THE BIBLE, QUMRAN, AND THE SAMARITANS NOW IN PAPERBACK

The book focuses on the change in Biblical Studies and Samaritan research created by new material emerging from the manuscripts from the Dead Sea and the ruins and inscriptions found on Mount Gerizim. The pre-Samaritan texts from Qumran and the results from the excavations on Mount Gerizim have created an area of study common to previously separated fields of research. Biblical scholars and experts on the Samaritans discuss this new situation. Bible; Qumran; Samaritans; Pentateuch

THE CONCEPT OF PEACE IN JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM

AN IMAGINARY TRIO

INTRODUCTIONS TO DIGITAL HUMANITIES – RELIGION

Christopher D. Cantwell, Kristian Petersen (Eds.)

VOLUME 2: DIGITAL HUMANITIES AND RESEARCH METHODS IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES An Introduction

This volume provides practical, but provocative, case studies of exemplary projects that apply digital technology or methods to the study of religion. An introduction and 16 essays are organized by the kinds of sources digital humanities scholars use – texts, images, and places – with a final section on the professional and pedagogical issues digital scholarship raises for the study of religion. King Solomon, Jesus, and Aristotle OPEN ACCESS

This book offers fundamental knowledge about the specific understanding of “peace” in the Sacred Scriptures of Judaism, Christianity and Islam as well as the manifold discourses about the concept of “peace” within these three traditions. It investigates the roots of the concept and its relevance for the present time. It unfolds commonalities and differences among the monotheistic religions as well as their relationship to secular views on peace.

This book focuses on places and instances where Solomon’s legendary biography intersects with those of Jesus Christ and of Aristotle. Solomon is the axis around which this trio revolves, the thread that binds it together. It is based on the premise that there exists a correspondence, both overt and implied, between these three biographies, that has taken shape within a vast, multifaceted field of texts for more than two thousand years.

IMAGERY TECHNIQUES IN MODERN JEWISH MYSTICISM

EXODUS

FROM SCROLLS TO SCROLLING

NOW IN PAPERBACK

This book analyzes and describes the development and aspects of imagery techniques, a primary mode of mystical experience, in Jewish mysticism. Imagery techniques of twentieth century Jewish mysticism, in contrast to linguistic imagery techniques in medieval Kabbalah, are comparable to screenplays or feature films. This development can be fruitfully contextualized within broader trends of western and eastern imagery techniques. THE CONCEPT OF REVELATION IN JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM

The idea that God reveals himself to human beings is central in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, but differs in regard of content and conceptualization. The first volume of the new series Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses points out similarities and differences of “revelation”. KCID aims to establish an archeology of religious knowledge in order to create a new conceptual platform of mutual understanding among religious communities. TSIMTSUM AND MODERNITY Lurianic Heritage in Modern Philosophy and Theology

This volume is the first ever collection of essays in philosophy, theology, and intellectual history, devoted to the Lurianic concept of tsimtsum. It contains eighteen texts which demonstrate the historical development of this notion and its evolving meaning: from the Hebrew Bible and the classical midrashic collections, through Kabbalah, Isaac Luria himself, and his disciples, up to modernity. ALIENATED WISDOM Enquiry into Jewish Philosophy and Scepticism NOW IN PAPERBACK

The present study addresses problems of an epistemological nature which hinge on the question of how to define Jewish thought. It inquires the relationship between Jewish culture, Greek philosophy, and Greco-Roman thought in connection with the query into the history and genealogy of wisdom and knowledge. The subject of inquiry will thus be the birth of the concept of Jewish philosophy, Jewish theology and Jewish philosophy of religion. This book focuses on Abraham Abulafia’s esoteric thought in relation to Maimonides, Maimonideans, and Islamic thought in the line of Leo Strauss’ theory of the history of philosophy. A survey of Abulafia’s sources leads into an examination of the esoteric meaning on the famous parable of the three rings, as well as Abulafia’s universalistic understanding of the nature of the Bible, the Hebrew language, and the people of Israel.

The book provides the first comprehensive study on Judah Halevi’s use of sceptical tactics in his wrestling with the dogmatic-rationalistic trends of the Arabic culture of his period (11th–12th centuries).

The book examines the unique intellectual synthesis of Isaac Satanow (1732–1804), a central figure of the Haskala, who harmonized Jewish tradition with contemporary findings in the natural sciences and philosophical ideas with the help of Kabbala. It confronts his ambivalent reception in the academic discourse and questions categories of Haskala research like assimilation, rationalism, secularization and educational reform.

The Yalkut Shimoni compiles rabbinical interpretations of the entire Hebrew bible. We do not know the criteria for selecting the interpretations, nor whether the book was conceived as a comprehensive exegetical reference work to be linked to biblical interpretations in the Talmud and Midrash or for reforming the rabbinical interpretive tradition. The translation of this work is a first step toward answering these questions. Beat Zuber, Neudorf, Schweiz. Monograph, German, 1st quarter 2021

As rabbinic literature in general, Seder Eliyahu a so-called ethical midrash probably composed in the ninth century, makes rich use of narrative, to interpret and to edify. This book provides a classification of the work’s narrative material. It examines, among the most significant aspects of the work’s narratology, the ways in which narrative (e. g. parables, first-person narratives, and stories of women) interacts with non-narrative discourse. Rabbinic literature; midrash; Seder Eliyahu;

Palestine, and later Israel, has been of foremost importance for German-Jewish immigration. Famous texts by major writers, including Else Lasker-Schüler, Sammy Groneman and Shalom Ben-Chorin, were published in Palestine, not in Germany. The Dialectical Position in Contemporary Jewish Thought from Rav Kook to Rav Shagar

Based on last wills and testaments composed by Jamaican Jews between 1673 and 1815, this book explores the social and familial experiences of one of the most critical yet understudied nodes of the Atlantic Portuguese Jewish Diaspora.
