Die Identität des modernen Menschen ist wesentlich durch Konsumpraktiken bestimmt. Gegenwärtige Diskurse über Konsum zwischen Sucht und Selbstbestimmung haben ihren Ursprung in der Luxusdebatte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die Arbeit untersucht erstmals aufklärerisches Schreiben über Praktiken wie Alkoholkonsum, Onanie und Lesen im Zusammenhang mit dem Luxus als Kampfbegriff zwischen ständischem Konservatismus und kapitalistischer Moderne.

Modern human identity has been shaped by consumer practices. Contemporary discourses about consumption between addiction and self-determination have their origins in the eighteenth-century luxury debate. Die Studie gibt Antworten auf solche Fragen, indem sie ausgehend vom praxeologischen Ansatz des SFB 1391 das Konzept der ‚ästhetischen Autonomie‘ erstmals umfassend historisch wie systematisch untersucht und kritisch auf seine Aktualität befragt.

Er untersucht die Berührungspunkte, aber auch Differenzen zwischen der Lyrik verschiedener Volkssprachen im Spektrum der Gattungen und stellt Bezüge zur antiken Lyrik sowie zum Hohelied her. Er versteht sich zudem als Beitrag zu einer Historisierung der Lyriktheorie.
The anthology, which is the result of an interdisciplinary conference in Munich, looks at medieval lyric poetry from a European perspective. It examines the points of contact, as well as differences, between the poetry of different vernacular languages in the spectrum of genres and makes references to ancient poetry as well as to the Song of Songs. It also sees itself as a contribution to a historicization of lyric theory.

While God looks directly into people’s souls as inspector cordium, the relationship of observation between man and the devil appears as an immanent and indirect, lateral and potentially reciprocal one. The contributions in this volume describe how late medieval and early modern stories narratively modeled such constellations of attention, thereby negotiating mechanisms of social control together with forms of vigilant selfobservation.

This volume examines the linguistic dimension of vigilance in different contexts. In the wealth of early modern portrayals of the devil as a fear-inducing monstrosity, narrative realizations that take a strangely different path stand out. This includes the staging of the diabolical enemy as a latent danger. The journal became the central media format for literature around 1800. This study is the first to take a media-historical perspective to examine the phase in which German literature was constituted – using the journal as a guiding thread. The analytical concept of “journal poetics” allows the journal projects of Wieland (Teutscher Merkur), Schiller (Thalia, Die Horen), and Cottas (Morgenblatt) to be explored in their respective contexts.

This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine.

This volume examines the previously overlooked connections between historical manifestations of magic and their performance in the theater between 1600 and 1685. These letters bring to light complex existential and intellectual storylines: of friendship, love, and pain, of the search of the purpose of life, cultural commitment, and artistic creation.

With almost 100 volumes, the “Deutsche Texte des Mittelalters” are one of the most important series of editions of medieval literature. Until recently only available in print, all volumes since 1990 are now also accessible as e-books. With the support of the BBAW, the majority of the volumes published after 1990, almost 20 titles, have also been made available in open access. Further volumes published after 1945 will be made digitally accessible via the Akademie Verlag Book Archive in the future.

Twenty representations of the globe accompany the late medieval transmission of Benedictine monk Ranulph Higden’s world chronicle, the Polychronicon. This study is the first to analyze all these maps and their codicological and thematic contexts. It asks how and why geography was represented here, explaining the influence that the contemporary practice of memorizing knowledge had on the conceptualization of representations of the world.

Ein wissens- und kulturgeschichtlicher Ansatz erfasst die vielschichtigen Formen kartografischer Wissensaufbereitung.

Inwiefern kann die Schriftbildlichkeit (Anordnung, Hervorhebung etc.) grammatisch bedeutsam sein? Zur Beantwortung wird ein Korpus aus Fotos von Lebensmittelverpackungen mit einem erweiterten kognitiv-grammatischen Ansatz und einer Kombination aus Kollektionsanalyse und grammatischen Proben untersucht. Die Analyse zeigt eine Relevanz der Gestaltung für den Status als Markenname, Warenname und deren Kombinationen mit nicht-verbalen Prädikaten.
To which extent is the notational iconicity of text (layout, emphasis, etc.) grammatically significant? This volume provides an answer by taking an expanded cognitive-grammatical approach to examine a corpus of food packaging photos, using a combination of collection analysis and grammatical samples. The analysis reveals the relevance of design for the status of brand names, product names, and how they are combined with non-verbal predicates.

Neben der Diagnostizierung eines Krankheitsbildes dient er heute auch der Bezeichnung und Bewertung widersprüchlicher Umstände und wird als Schimpfwort eingesetzt. Die Studie geht dieser Entwicklung aus linguistischer und wissenshistorischer Perspektive nach und leistet einen Beitrag zur psychiatrischen Debatte um die „Abschaffung von Schizophrenie.“
Since it was coined in 1908, the term “schizophrenia” gone through some astonishing changes. Alongside being the diagnosis for a clinical syndrome, it is now used to describe and evaluate contradictory situations and is also used as an insult. This study examines this development from the perspective of linguistics and the history of science, making a contribution to the psychiatric debate about the “abolition of schizophrenia.”

One of these cases was sale for the purpose of participating in the purchase price. In the past, most studies on Pre-Roman societies in Italy focused on the elites. A strict hierarchy with a powerful person at the top: German theaters are still heavily based on the century-old figure of the Intendant or artistic director, a profession that took on some of its present character in the 1920s. This volumes examines the example of the Bavarian State Theater to ask how this role developed in the Weimar Republic and where early alternatives to the model of the “autocrat” can be found.
Die Theaterzensur wurde im Umbruch vom Kaiserreich zur Weimarer Republik 1919 gesetzlich aufgehoben. Daraufhin begleiteten außergewöhnlich häufig Skandale die Aufführungen im Theater. Die Untersuchung geht anhand von exemplarischen Theaterskandalen in München der Frage nach, inwiefern sich bei diesen eine „inoffizielle Zensur“ in Form von Störungen und Verboten von Aufführungen fortsetzt und welche Rolle die Öffentlichkeit dabei spielt.

Despite its specific visuality, the spectacle has not played any major role in film studies. By deconstructing the cultural history of the term, this study sounds out its analytical potential. Three analyses spanning the history of film show how the spectacle appears as a dynamic network of gazes in the staging of surfaces – and thus how visibility itself is negotiated aesthetically.
