The Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik is the oldest mathematics periodical in the world. Founded in 1826 by August Leopold Crelle, and edited by him until his death in 1855, it soon became widely known under the name of Crelle’s Journal. In the 195 years of its existence, Crelle’s Journal has developed into an outstanding scholarly periodical with one of the largest circulations among mathematics journals. It belongs to the very top mathematics periodicals, as listed in Clarivate’s Journal Citation Report.

DE GRUYTER STUDIES IN MATHEMATICS Edited by Carsten Carstensen, Gavril Farkas, Nicola Fusco, Fritz Gesztesy, Niels Jacob, Zenghu Li, Karl-Hermann Neeb The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series De Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 35 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community.

This book provides a modern survey of some basic properties of Sturm-Liouville problems and to bring the reader to the forefront of knowledge of some areas of the theory. For example, some special Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems are equivalent to certain Jacobi and cyclic Jacobi matrix eigenvalue problems. A new approach to problems with periodic conditions is developed.

Affine algebraic geometry has progressed remarkably in the last half a century, and its central topics are affine spaces and affine space fibrations. This authoritative book is aimed at graduate students and researchers alike, and studies the geometry and topology of morphisms of algebraic varieties whose general fibers are isomorphic to the affine space while describing structures of algebraic varieties with such affine space fibrations.

This book presents two natural generalizations of continuous mappings, namely usco and quasicontinuous mappings. The first class considers set-valued mappings, the second class relaxes the definition of continuity. Both these topological concepts stem naturally from basic mathematical considerations and have numerous applications that are covered in detail.

This volume introduces noncommutative integration theory on semifinite von Neumann algebras and the theory of singular traces for symmetric operator spaces. Deeper aspects of the association between measurability, poles and residues of spectral zeta functions, and asymptotics of heat traces are studied, including the integration of quantum differentials, measures on fractals, and Connes’ formula on the Hochschild class of the Chern character.

This is the first complete monograph dedicated to singular traces. For mathematician the text offers, due to Kalton’s contribution, a complete theory of traces on symmetrically normed ideals of compact operators, updated in this edition on the Pietsch correspondence. For mathematical physicists and other users of Connes’ noncommutative geometry the text offers a complete reference to Dixmier traces and the mathematical features of singular traces. This carefully written text on measure theory with applications to partial differential equations covers general measure theory, Lebesgue spaces of real-valued and vector-valued functions, different notions of measurability for the latter, weak convergence of functions and measures, Radon and Young measures, capacity, and finally applications to quasilinear parabolic problems (in particular, forward-backward equations).

Many applied problems of mathematical physics involve equations for functions, the number of arguments of which tends to infinity as a small parameter tends to zero. Well-known asymptotic methods are applicable only to equations for a function of a fixed number of arguments. This book discusses a new asymptotic method that allows one to construct approximations for functions of a large number of arguments.

This book lays down the foundations of expanding random dynamical systems and covers the random thermodynamic formalism, random conformal measures, Gibbs states, fiberwise and expected topological pressure, and the random variational principle, based on the work of Arnold and Crauel on random measures. Finally, introductory material on deterministic distance expanding mappings, random measures, and fractal geometry is also included.

This book discusses geometric properties of smooth weighted intersections in the context of mirror symmetry. It includes a series of open problems in algebraic geometry and mirror symmetry and a series of examples methods and applications. The objective of this book is to look at certain commutative graded algebras that appear frequently in algebraic geometry. By studying classical constructions from geometry from the point of view of modern commutative algebra, this carefully-written book is a valuable source of information, offering a careful algebraic systematization and treatment of the problems at hand, and contributing to the study of the original geometric questions. The book is about strong axioms of infinity (also known as large cardinal axioms) in set theory, and the ongoing search for natural models of these axioms. Assuming the Ultrapower Axiom, we solve various classical problems in set theory (e.g., the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis) and develop a theory of large cardinals that is much clearer than the theory that can be developed using only the standard axioms. This monograph will cover some geometricfunctional aspects of the major areas of contemporary potential analysis with applications in partial differential equations and mathematical physics. Contributions from over 25 renowned mathematicians worldwide.

The book studies sub-Laplacian operators on a family of model domains in C^{n+1}, which is a good point-wise model for a $CR$ manifold with non-degenerate Levi form. A considerable amount of study has been devoted to partial differential operators constructed from non-commuting vector fields, in which the non-commutativity plays an essential role in determining the regularity properties of the operators.

Hermitian symmetric spaces are an important class of manifolds that can be studied with methods from Kähler geometry and Lie theory. This work gives an introduction to Hermitian symmetric spaces and their submanifolds, and presents classification results for real hypersurfaces in these spaces, focusing on results obtained by Jürgen Berndt and Young Jin Suh in the last 20 years.

This book summarizes the main analytical and numerical results of Carleman estimates. In the analytical part, Carleman estimates for three main types of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) are derived. In the numerical part, first numerical methods are proposed to solve ill-posed Cauchy problems for both linear and quasilinear PDEs. Next, various versions of the convexification method are developed for a number of Coefficient Inverse Problems.

After the introduction to simple modules allowing a non degenerate invariant bilinear form in any characteristic the author illustrates step by step the approach given by Sin and Willems. Dirichlet characters and results on primes in arithmetic progressions are given as applications. Characters; Group representations; Quadratic modules; Dirichlet L-series; Lattices over orders

The structure of this book reflects the syllabus of a standard Master course on nonlinear dynamics and chaos. The first part of the book is a complete introduction to Dynamical Systems for non-mathematicians and explains all the mathematical concepts needed to understand the book. The second part treats more advanced subjects, such as chaos and strange attractors, from an experimentalist point of view. The second edition of this well-received textbook is devoted to Combinatorics and Graph Theory, which are cornerstones of Discrete Mathematics. Every section begins with simple model problems. Following their detailed analysis, the reader is led through the derivation of definitions, concepts, and methods for solving typical problems. Theorems then are formulated, proved, and illustrated by more problems of increasing difficulty. Alexander Kheyfits, The City University of New York, USA.

Stochastic processes occur everywhere in sciences and engineering, and need to be understood by applied mathematicians, engineers and scientists alike. This book introduces the reader gently to the subject. Brownian motions are a stochastic process, central to many applications and easy to treat. The new edition enlarges the existing chapters and offers new full chapters on “Wiener Chaos and Iterated Integrals” and “Brownian Local Times”.
