Daniel Tiemann Vice President STEM Daniel.Tiemann@degruyter.com

Dear Reader, We are living in times that one would like to see become a little less interesting now and then. Enormous challenges such as climate change, environmental pollution, food shortages and energy crises dominate the daily agenda – to name just a few of the challenges of these times. It is not without reason that the United Nations has declared 2022 the “International Year of Basic Research for Sustainable Development.” At De Gruyter, we already focused our acquisitions on these existentially important topics several years ago. As a result, we are once again able to present you with a highly topical selection of books this year, covering both basic research (including p. 34 in the catalog) and the practical and applied aspects of the most pressing issues of the day. This year, I would also like to especially recommend one of our flagship titles “Riedel Moderne Anorganische Chemie” and the corresponding exercise book, which you will find on page 51. I wish you an informative and pleasant reading of this catalog and hope that with our selection of highly interesting books and journals we can make a small contribution to making these times a little less interesting! Sincerely yours

Bipolaron Mechanism

High temperature superconducting theory drew controversy after the discovery of superconductors at close to room temperatures. However, a consistent microscopic theory of HT superconductivity based on bipolaron mechanism leads to a better understanding of microscopic and macroscopic description. By presenting aspects of superconductivity now joined in a strict theory rather than separate models this work is especially useful for graduate students.

Remediation of wastewater is important to ensure that pollutants generated in industry do not effect our environment negatively. Traditional wastewater remediation is not a sustainable process, however by using biological means the sustainability can be improved. This book explores how bioremediation biotechnology is used to remove pollutants in wastewater. Both conventional methods bioremediation technologies are discussed.

Current use of the ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) within biological wastewater treatment system is incomplete due to limitations of current culture-based techniques. This book offers an overview of new nitrification technologies via the use of AOB in the removal of ammonia nitrogen from wastewater. The application of new approaches based on AOB leads to greater ammonia nitrogen removal and results in more efficient wastewater treatment.

This book describes both the theory behind the analytical process and its practical application. The key methods of analytical chemistry are explained by providing the reader with just enough background and equations to understand what is being measured and how. Each chapter contains schematics to illustrate the defining features of the method described. The text itself is short and concise but provides plenty of references for further reading.

The book provides information on basic concepts of qualitative and quantitative analysis, optical methods of analysis, along with thermal and electroanalytical methods, the different laws of spectroscopy, and selection rules governing the possible transitions in the different regions of the electromagnetic spectra. It also covers important separation methods like chromatography and solvent extraction.

Organozinc derivatives are now easy to prepare and their reactivity can be modified with transition metals. They are used in crosscoupling reactions with halides and pseudohalides to form C-C bonds. The advantage of organozinc derivatives over Grignard reagents is that they are more chemoselective and have a higher funcional group tolerance. This book describes current aspects and limitations of the field, such as enantioselective couplings. Catalysis; Organic Chemistry; Cross-coupling Reactions; Transition Metal Catalysis

The book provides an up-to-date overview of the fast growing area of vibrational spectroscopy. Analytic methods using vibrational spectroscopy allow for the chemical analysis of materials. Vibrational spectroscopy also provides information about the interactions of components. In the forms of nano-IR and tipenhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), the method is a valuable tool for nanotechnology.

After an introduction on natural toxins and toxicology, the book is arranged according to biogenetic origin and chemistry of the poisonous and venomous compounds. Each chapter describes the biology of toxin producing organisms, chemistry, pharmacological activity and mode of action of the poisonous compounds, risks and symptoms of intoxications and treatment. It shows the great potential of natural toxins as drugs and for drug development.

This work views Einstein’s Autobiographical Notes, a classic in the history of science, as a key to opening up a new perspective on Einstein’s intellectual life, from childhood to old age, and to reconstructing the becoming of this philosophical scientist. Scientific reflections and personal correspondence add to this compelling portrait of Albert Einstein.

Modern knowledge of color perception – physical and physiological! Pigments play a major role in manipulating the light rays. This can be done by absorption, reflection or interference. The eye does not care how this manipulation takes place. A green colored pigment produces the same color impression as a mixture of yellow and blue colored pigment. These exciting aspects will guide you through the book.

This monograph takes stock of the situation in higher spin gauge theories for the first time. Besides a thorough recapitulation of the field’s history, it reviews the progress that has been made and offers a pedagogical introduction to the subject. Abstract approaches to the theory are offered to facilitate a conceptual rethinking of the main problems and to help see patterns hidden by heavy formalism.

The work provides today’s research expertise of photonic-based quantum optics and technology with particular attention to the generation of non-classical light with semiconductor nanostructures. After presenting the compact fundamentals of single and entangled photon sources it discusses quantum dots, nanofabrication methods and describes the technological transfer into real world implementations.
