Dear Friends and Readers, The Deutscher Kunstverlag has been an imprint of De Gruyter since 2018. In recent years the Deutscher Kunstverlag and the art history team of De Gruyter have worked intensively and in close cooperation on elaborating the program. The mutual enrichment plays an important part in this — both in the further development of our publication formats ranging from open access to high-quality catalogues, as well as on the level of content-related topics. Despite the different traditions of the two publishing houses, which we will continue to preserve and cultivate in the future, we have taken the interweaving of our programs as an opportunity for a new feature: for the first time in this preview, no distinction is made between the publications of our respective publishing houses. Instead, we wish to offer you a range of fascinating new books on collections and collectors, on the classical genres of painting, drawing, sculpture, architecture, glass art, photography, and on global topics and much more all structured by content in a publisher-independent manner. Wishing you many exciting discoveries while browsing through our fall program! Katja Richter Editorial Director

The important, nearly forgotten German-Jewish museum expert and art collector Curt Glaser (1879–1943) was forced to emigrate by the National Socialists and sold the majority of his art holdings in Berlin in 1933. Through the whereabouts of works once owned by him, the Kunstmuseum Basel reached an agreement with Glaser’s heirs that is recognized internationally as “best

practice,” and in connection with this is honoring Glaser’s work in an exhibition. The catalogue provides richly illustrated insights into Glaser’s fascinating collection, with works by Edvard Munch, Max Beckmann, and Henri Matisse. Essays link new research on this advocate of modernism and his collecting of modern art and embed his fate in current questions connect-

ed with formerly Jewish art holdings in public museums. With contributions by Joachim Brand, Anita Haldemann, Max Koss, Judith Rauser, Lynn Rother, Andreas Schalhorn, Noemi Scherrer, Joachim Sieber, Jennifer Tonkovich, Felix Uhlmannn

Vienna is one of the biggest art and culture metropolises in Europe. In addition to the imperial collections, numerous important collections emerged here, in particular starting in the seventeenth century and into the modern era. The biographies brought together here deal not only with viceroys, ministers of state and ambassadors, merchants, businessmen and bankers,

but also with composers, painters, art dealers, and art historians. The focus is on collectors who are less well known today, who are documented in detail for the first time here based on contemporary sources. Among the central questions are the collectors’ motivations and acquisition strategies, as well as the preservation and presentation of the objects. Together, the biogra-

phies make an important contribution to a differentiated history of the culture of collecting, and simultaneously position Vienna in an overall European context. Sebastian Schütze, University of Vienna

The Tesoro di San Gennaro from Naples, for the first time in Germany The history of Vesuvius in art and cultural history Fascinating works of painting, sculpture, and craft

9 783422 988545

Exhibition Diözesanmuseum Freising October 1, 2022 to January 29, 2023

The eruption of Vesuvius in the year AD 79 signified a collective trauma; it revealed the fragility of the civilized world. Contemporaries explained the catastrophe from the perspective of the natural sciences, mythology or from the viewpoint of religion. With the eruptions since the 17th century, a unique culture of piety developed in Naples, while, the natural science

7

conducted as of the 18th century led to the erection of the first Vesuvius Observatory in the world. The people of Naples today find themselves in a field of tension between religion and science due to the ongoing threat. This volume is dedicated to the search for explanations, meaning, and hope — despite the uncontrollable threat — based on the example of nu-

merous works of painting, sculpture, and craft. With contributions by Christoph Kürzeder, Steffen Mensch, Dieter Richter, Carlo Knight, Erri De Luca

Museums as protagonists in the art trade — a hitherto overlooked chapter in the history of the occupation of France With a preface by Bénédicte Savoy and Gilbert Lupfer

9 783110 737608

8

Not only Adolf Hitler and Hermann Göring utilized the occupation of France during the Second World War to procure artworks for their collections — German museums also made acquisitions at the time. The advantageous foreign exchange rate and the large range of artworks, for instance, from seized Jewish property, afforded favorable opportunities. French mu-

seums like the Louvre also expanded their holdings during this time. Many purchases by German museums were restituted to France in the postwar period, while some have remained in the collections until today and are first now becoming a focus of research. The essays in the volume from German and French perspectives analyze the similarities and differences in the ac-

tivities of museums on the French art market during the occupation for the first time. Elisabeth Furtwängler, Mattes Lammert, Technical University of Berlin

Hildebrand Gurlitt was one of the art dealers who were commissioned to sell so-called “degenerate” artworks confiscated from German museums in 1937. Around 400 artworks from the context of the context remained in his possession. They are housed in the Kunstmuseum Bern as the Cornelius Gurlitt Legacy. The volume is based on extensive research on the origins of the Hildebrand

9

Gurlitt’s art collection It addresses the position of the museum director and curator Gurlitt with respect to German Modernism and his role as an art dealer during the National Socialist era and in the postwar period. Further essays analyze et al. his activities in the context of the National Socialist politics of art and persecution and critically examine strategies in the art business after 1945. The catalogue contains all of the

artworks in the Cornelius Gurlitt Legacy connected with the action to confiscate “degenerate art.” Nikola Doll, Kunstmuseum Bern Uwe Fleckner, University of Hamburg Gesa Jeuthe Vietzen, Advisory Commission, Berlin

The publication explores the diversity of the lives and destinies of artists during the Weimar Republic, under National Socialism, and until the inaugural documenta held in the young Federal Republic in 1955. Their works and biographies bear witness to the horrors of persecution and careers cut short, to resistance and conformity. The presentation intertwines the in-

dividual lives with the parallel strands of contemporary history and institutional frameworks. Numerous authors shed light on issues that have recently attracted sustained interest from historians. The choice of emphases reflects the history of the Lenbachhaus’s collection and exhibition program. The presentation accordingly focuses on the Munich art scene, complemented

by major phenomena on the national and international stages. Karin Althaus, Sarah Bock, Lisa Kern, Melanie Wittchow, Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau Munich

CoBrA is one of the most important artist groups of Art Informel. The name is derived from the first letters of the three capital cities of Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam — the centers from which the CoBrA artists took action. Little is still known here in Germany about the concrete origins of the art movement. The exhibition and catalogue of the same name attempts a broad examination of the group’s origins: with the focus on the reconstruction of the movement prior to its official establishment in November 1948. It aims to present a representative cross-section of the movement that includes the largest possible number of artists as well as the greatest

possible concentration of forms of expression and topics characteristic of the movement. Roughly fifty paintings, thirty sculptural works, fifty graphic reproductions and photographs as well as individual ceramics and textiles from international collections are presented. An illuminated manuscript from private collection - made accessible to the public for the first time

9 783422 986954

14

A richly illustrated book of hours was produced in the surroundings of the Parisian court at the beginning of the sixteenth century, presumably commissioned by Philippa von Geldern (1467– 1546), Princess of Lower Saxony and later Duchess of Lorraine. Jean Coene IV, one of the few illuminators of the time who is known by name, furnished the unusual work with a completely il-

lustrated calendar and twenty-four — of formerly twenty-seven — large miniatures. The book of hours, which is privately owned, is now being presented to the public in its entirety for the first time — accompanied by an examination of the role of the client and of the classification of Jean Coene IV as an illuminator Roll within the context of Parisian book art around 1500.

Gold ground in a new perspective

9 783422 989382

15

This book contains the first extensive study on the gold ground in Italian panel painting. In Fra Angelico’s panel paintings, gold leaf applications and perspectival modes of representation complement each other. Therefore, this book revises the history of the “invention” of perspective and gives answers to the question of how the gold ground became a blind spot in

art historical research over the past decades. Saskia Quené, postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley

Rubens’s The Crucifixion of Saint Peter still hangs today in the location for which it was created, in the parish church of St. Peter in Cologne. Thanks to the beneficence of the merchant Eberhard III Jabach and his wife, Anna Reuter, the painter from Antwerp produced this final, very personal picture. Until today, The Crucifixion of Saint Peter continues to be shown in the

location for which it was created. The occasion for an in-depth inter-disciplinary engagement with this work was an examination of its condition, which led to the current examina-tions and the restoration of the work. Rubens’s The Crucifixion of Saint Peter is being honored for the first time with a monographic study that brings together insights from history, iconog-

raphy, art-historical context, and the work technique. Andrea Pufke, LVR-Amt für Denkmalpflege im Rheinland

Innovative overview presentation of an iconography of the political in action

9 783422 987678

17

The visualization of power takes place until today quite significantly via visualizations of the body. Expressed pointedly: there is no power without pictures of the body. This also applies in particular to the European societies of the Middle Ages and early modern period, in which the body of the ruler was both a guarantee and a preferred projection figure for the politi-cal

order. In this body, not only was power legitimized, but also constituted in the first place by means of countless documents of representation — and thus through pictures of the body in actu. This volume strives for the first time to “spell out” an “iconography of the political in action”.

More than a name — new research on signing practices in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era

9 783110 613926

18

Signatures on works of art are characterized by their many-sidedness. They consist of letters and simultaneously have graphic qualities as well. The essays in the book take a look at signing practices from the Middle Ages and the modern era based on the example et al. of Albrecht Dürer, El Greco, and Rembrandt. They address aspects of authorship and artistic identity, the

intermedial interplay between text and picture, and the intellectual horizons of artists in various cultural milieus in Europe. The technical execution of signatures is thus also examined, as well as the use of different fonts. New perspectives on signatures of artworks are thus developed based on the connection between art-historical, philological, and restoration questions.

Imagination, Utopia and Gallantry New look at colonial aspirations

9 783422 990463

19

What were the early visions of Empire in Regency France? The book offers a interpretation of Jean-Antoine Watteau’s Pilgrim-age to the Isle of Cythera (1717) by framing it in the context of French colonial expansion in the years of the Regency. Born in Louis XIV’s reign, galant aesthetics contributed to frame the colonial encounter in French America. Fantasies

of maritime depar-ture, embarkation and/or debarkation, also expressed a longing for colonial travel and exploration. The imperial imagination fueled with codes of galanterie was very developed in the circles of Watteau’s amateurs. From Watteau’s Pilgrimage to the Isle of Cythera (1717) to its visual reenactment in 1763, the book argues that galanterie served as a visual and

conceptual model of French commercial and colonial relations. Charlotte Guichard, is Research Professor at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Paris)

The ability of pictures to undermine aesthetic standards and call artistic conventions into question is central to the research projects of the art historian Jürgen Müller, to whom this volume commemorating his sixtieth birthday is dedicated. Numerous essays by longtime colleagues provide new interpretations of well- and lesser-known masterpieces, in which the

initial impression is frequently turned into its opposite. Jürgen Müller has held the professorship of medieval and modern art history at the TU Dresden since 2003. He has written authoritative monographs and studies on Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Rembrandt, and Caravaggio, and edited a wide range of scholarly anthologies and exhibition catalogues.

Painting in Düsseldorf at the time when Wilhelm Schadow was director of the art academy was of world rank. Not a few considered what was happening artistically in Düsseldorf to be as important, perhaps even more important, than what was happening in Berlin, in Munich, in Paris. This was not in spite of, but because of the pictorial strategy characteristic of

the “Düsseldorf School of Painting” of translating poetry into painting, of making reflections and feelings — i.e. the invisible — the subject. The invisible, which only appears before our inner eye, does not make the paintings poorer. On the contrary, it makes them richer. The paintings of the Düsseldorf School of Painting attracted particular criticism for their depiction

of the non-representable. What the invisible of painting can be, and how it manifested itself in the perception of contemporaries, is the subject of this book. Hans Körner, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf

This anthology outlines a research project at the Angermuseum in Erfurt and forms the start of a new assessment of the landscape painter Friedrich Nerly (1807–1878) from Erfurt, who spent the main years of his career in Italy, particularly in Venice. If one wants to do justice to the phenomenon of Nerly, it is necessary to take a look at the changes in artistic, economic, and social contexts. Nerly’s oeuvre should be connected with the innovative painting prac-

tices and finding of motifs of the early plein-air painters as well as with sales strategies that reacted to the globalization of the art market and tourism. In line with research on cultural transfer, questions, for instance, regarding the achievements that Nerly brought to Italy or inspirations that he found there emerge crossnationally.

An overall view of the modern Parisian art scene Contribution to current discourses on gender New research on still marginalized paintings of female figures

9 783110 766417

23

The École de Paris, or School of Paris, stands for the international Parisian art scene in the early years of the 20th century and is often associated with names like Picasso and Matisse. But it also featured several portrait painters whose fashionable portraits of women enjoyed great popularity among Parisian society: Thanks to Paul-César Helleu, Giovanni Boldini,

Marie Laurencin, Kees van Dongen, and Jacqueline Marval, among others, the Portrait à la mode became a genre of its own. Since it was overshadowed by the avant-garde, it has hitherto rarely been the subject of art-historical research. These for the time very representative Portraits à la mode prompt a critical view of society, fashion, and the changing image of women during

the Belle Époque, the interwar years, and the roaring 1920s. Nina Goldt, art historian and translator, Düsseldorf

When one speaks of the “lost generation,” it also includes Lotte Laserstein (1898–1993). After the National Socialists seized power, she was forced to leave Germany, and her exile resulted in her being forgotten. Laserstein’s artistic career, however, began auspiciously: in 1927, she was the first woman to complete studies at the Berlin Academy of the Arts with

distinction, and quickly made a name for herself in the art metropolis. While her works are close to Neue Sachlichkeit, they lack its cool, dissecting smoothness. Laserstein’s self-assured view of the new woman, technical mastery, play with traditional and modern visual formulas, as well as her synthesis of objectivity and sensitivity give her pictures a captivating con-

temporaneity and time-transcending topicality. Anna-Carola Krausse, freelance art historian, Berlin

Important contribution to the topic of Neue Sachlichkeit in Germany Franz Lenk (1898–1968) was one of the most well-known painters of Neue Sachlichkeit. The publication offers a current perspective on his oeuvre and artistic career. It poses questions not only about his artistic role models, but also about his worldview and how it is manifested in his painting. For instance, Lenk’s ambivalent position during the years from 1933 to

1945 is analyzed and assessed within the context of the events of the time. Biographical and art-historical insights, including about the group “Die Sieben” (The Seven) and his participation in the exhibitions of the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh in the 1930s, are incorporated into the presentation. Hanna Nagel’s focus as an artist was on drawing and graphic prints. Like no other woman artist of her time, she examined the relationship between men and women as well as the problematic balancing act between professional work and motherhood. Her work following her studies in Karlsruhe was at first characterized by objective precision. With her move to Berlin, she,

however, distanced herself from the stringent drawing style of Neue Sachlichkeit. The oft-biographical works executed with a brush and pen in Indian ink are formally more complex and painterly, whereby the impression of these so-called “Dunkle Blätter” (Dark Works) corresponds to the narratively and symbolically charged topics chosen. The focus of the exhibition and

catalogue is on the works of the 1920s and the early 1930s. Hanna Nagel (1907–1975), was born and died in Heidelberg, studied in Karlsruhe (with Karl Hubbuch) and Berlin (with Emil Orlik), married the artist Hans Fischer. After 1945 she worked as an illustrator in Heidelberg

Drawing practices and their significance: new insights into the creative process of premodern artists

9 783110 663655

28

Motoric-mechanical drawing techniques like tracing, copying, and cut and paste are among the fundamental workshop practices of the pre-modern era. They were also used in the training of renowned artists like Leonardo, Dürer, Michelangelo, and Rubens in order to modify designs, expand the supply of motifs, and produce new artworks. In the art theory of the time,

however, they were largely ignored or even disparaged. It is only possible to take note of a few positions that show appreciation for these techniques until the decisive ennoblement of copying in the eighteenth century. The discrepancy between the importance of drawing techniques in practice and the addressing of them in art theory was overlooked for a long time. This volume

thus strives to provide an indispensable new perspective in research on drawing and includes transdisciplinary contexts as well as aspects relating to art technologies and philosophy. Future Bodies from a Recent Past brings to life in particular a hitherto little-noticed phenomenon in art and sculpture: the reciprocal interpenetration of bodies and technology. With 120 works by 59 artists — primarily from Europe, the United States and Japan — the exhibition is dedicated to the major technological changes since the postwar period and examines their

influence on our notions of bodies. A multi-perspective history of contemporary sculpture is outlined with contributions on topics such as the influence of changing production technologies, materialities, and concepts of the body, but also interdisciplinary considerations of body-technology relations.

This is the first book on the boundary-pushing practice of the artist, dancer, and educator Suzanne Harris (1940–1979). Harris was a protagonist in key avant-garde projects of the downtown New York City artists’ community in the 1970s (the Anarchitecture group, 112 Greene Street, FOOD, The Natural History of the American

Dancer, Heresies); yet her own oeuvre fell into abeyance. Harris’ postminimalist work broke the mold of art categories, (feminist) art practices, art spaces, and the common notion of space. By transcending sculpture and dance, she created ephemeral, site-specific installations, which she conceived as body-ori-

ented choreographic situations. Her approach of sensory awareness led to a holistic philosophy of space, which again is paradigmatic for a materialist approach to (social) space that emerged in the arts at the time. Friederike Schäfer, art historian, Freie Universität Berlin

Throughout the fin de siècle, “energy” was a buzzword that was used far beyond the boundaries of the sciences to negotiate the formative scope as well as limits of Western modernity. The human body was positioned at the center of the visualization of this enigmatic drive of all movement in discourses on labor and economics, physical culture, sport, art, and literature. It was through the body that this all-pervading and conditioning physical principle as well as its perceptual qualities were to be made tangible. This volume is dedicated to these “en-

ergetic bodies.” The transdisciplinary individual contributions trace body scenarios of force and energy over the course of history from 1800 to the peak phase around 1900 and up to the present. Wilma Scheschonk, University of Hamburg Thomas Moser, TU Vienna

Francis La Flesche (1857–1932) lived between two worlds: as an Umonhon (Omaha), he fought for their rights, and as a scholar he researched his own culture. He is regarded as the first indigenous ethnologist of North America and stands representatively for the many indigenous protagonists without whom ethnological collections would never have come into being. We are no longer familiar with most of these individuals, since the focus until today has been on European and North American collectors. Francis La Flesche is an exception: his work provides insights into indigenous

agency and their resistance to racism and colonialism as well as their active participation in the trade with objects. The book presents La Flesche’s records of the objects, the collection of which he contributed to what is today the Ethnological Museum in Berlin in 1894 — an impressive testimony to his successful efforts to preserve the culture of the Omaha for future generations. Protecting, healing, or punishing — people of various eras and origins have attributed such powers to the sculptures that are being presented together here for the first time: be it the sculpture of the Mangaaka from what is today the Republic of Congo, the protective goddess Mahamayuri from China, or the Maria on the globe from Southern Germany. Forty-five objects created between the fourth and the nineteenth century from two museums in Berlin provide a vivid testimony to the ever-present need for protection and orientation when dealing with individual or social

crises. They represent the existence of an invisible world of gods, spirits, or ancestors, and create a connection between this world and a “different reality.” As a result of how they are presented in museums, their context of use is, however, often lost — a situation that is reflected on by the authors of this book. The built work of Hans Scharoun (1893– 1972) has already been honored many times, but his sensational drawings with utopian contents have only been considered cursorily and his pioneering drawings as a pupil and student have not been a focus at all. Over 1,000 free sketches and drawings by Scharoun that are not connected with concrete building projects and were produced

between 1909 — his time at school in Bremerhaven — and the end of the Second World War take center stage. Analyses of new sources now facilitate a first overall classification of his visions put down on paper. The publication honors the work of the architect, who was the first postwar president of the West-Berlin Akademie der Künste, in the fiftieth anniversary of his death.

This volume examines periodic changes in color design in medieval churches during the 19th and 20th century. What thus catches the eye is the alternation of phases that brought forth sacred spaces with reduced color and even visible stone and such spaces that strove for colorfulness. The ideologies that stand behind this process are analyzed by considering exemplary restoration measures in individual church buildings against the backdrop of the respective self-conception of monument maintenance, but also more general societal notions.

It is shown how much artistic design is inherent in the practice of preserving. Verena Ummenhofer, art historian, monument conservator; Office for the Protection of Monuments and Sites of Lower Saxony

The theme of the book is the interpretation of Italian Renaissance art by French artists as of the final decades of the 18th century. In particular, the book examines the origins of the historiographical myth of Tuscan Quattrocento architecture and art and how this myth took shape and spread thanks to the gaze of French travelers, philosophers, scholars, artists, and, more specifically, architects. The book also analyzes the genesis and evolution of architects’ travels in Tuscany as well as the ingenious, and innova-

tive practice of tracing the original drawings of Renaissance architects. Finally, it addresses the French architects’ disposition toward promoting an Italian Neo-Renaissance architectural language, in Europe and beyond, thus responding to values endorsed by the bourgeoisie of the 19th century. The publication focuses on the relationship between needs-oriented images of history and the adoption of historical artistic styles. The congruence of re-enactment or reconstruction and the collective desire for a representative image of their own past is analyzed with respect to the interaction between zeitgeist, influential protagonists, and historicizing ideologies. Critical light is shed on various dogmas, such as the idea of a beautifully white antiquity, which still has an effect on our contemporary imagination.

Even though color reconstructions can help us re-examine our aesthetic perceptions, it is still unclear whether and how we want to work with preconceived notions in the context of new societal challenges. This volume surveys the major German reform initiatives in the field of design in the 20th century. Their central point of departure was the creation of the German Werkbund in 1907, which in strove to achieve a new sense of quality in product development, exhibiting and advertising as well as to implement a fundamental reform of the education in the arts and crafts schools. The Bauhaus and the Ulm School of Design engendered the novel type of (industrial) designer. All three reform processes were distinguished by the

workshop principle and close cooperation with industry, innovative teaching as well as the development of novel forms of housing, living and communication. The volume further addresses the education of women at the Bauhaus and the reception of the Bauhaus and the Ulm School of Design. Eva-Maria Seng, University of Paderborn

Rowe’s third volume on the architecture of the Far East deals with the development of modern architecture and planning in China, with a focus on this development within the broader framework of nation-building. Episodes and periods interrogated in the book range from the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912 to the proclamation of Xi Jinping’s ‘China Dream’ 100 years later. Episodes will be foregrounded by commentary about the general states of the nation and particularly by urban planning undertakings. Providing a wide-ranging survey of Chinese

modern architecture that has a historic aspect to it, the book introduces the reader to a plethora of originative and influential buildings, momentous urban schemes as well as the architects and planners behind them. Peter G. Rowe, Liang Wang, Zhanliang Chen, Harvard Graduate School of Design

Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885–1967) is regarded as one of the leading theorists of the Neues Bauen movement in pre-War Germany, and of modern, functional urbanism. This set of accomplishments still dominates the public image of the architect, urban planner, teacher and art critic to this day. His development beyond that period has long been neglected. The essays in this collection seek to fill this gap, offering an exciting and wide-ranging new perspective on the work of a central protagonist of modernism. Until now, most critical

studies of Hilberseimer's work came from his place of exile in Chicago and his work in Germany / Europe and the USA tended to be viewed separately; this volume is the first to attempt to end this separation and encourage a complete overview of is work. Florian Strob, Bauhaus Dessau Foundation

For a long time, the topic of far-left currents within Bauhaus was one of controversy. Thanks to recent research on the Communist Student Fraction (Kostufra), the leftist students are finally coming into focus. Their magazine: bauhaus. sprachrohr der studierenden. organ der kostufra was a venue for unsparing critique of events, curricula, and teachers. The journal was published between 1930 and 1932 in Dessau and Berlin in 15 hectographed issues in a loose-leaf collection and is critically discussed here for the first time by researchers

from art and cultural studies, architecture, and editorial studies. It clearly demonstrates that the experimental value of Bauhaus cannot be separated from its political radicalism. Florian Strob, Wolfgang Thöner, Andreas Schätzke, Bauhaus Dessau Foundation

In the extensive grounds of the garden of Schloss Charlottenburg, three buildings invite visitors: the Belvedere, the Mausoleum, and the Neuer Pavillon. The Belvedere was erected in 1788–89 based on plans by Carl Gotthard Langhans. As its function and name, “schöne Aussicht,” already reveal, the tower-like building once provided a broad panorama over the city. The Mausoleum, the burial site of Queen Luise of Prussia, draws the most visitors until today. Friedrich Wilhelm III chose the end of a dark avenue of fir trees as the location to lay his de-

ceased young wife to rest. The Neuer Pavillon, an Italianate villa, is located close to the Spree. Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed this masterpiece of neoclassical architecture as a private refuge for Friedrich Wilhelm III. Bertholdsburg Castle towers up in the center of the small Thuringian city of Schleusingen in the southernmost foothills of the Thuringian Forest. The impressive Renaissance site was named after Berthold VII, the most important member of the House of Henneberg. Situated on a mountain spur, the striking Renaissance site can barely be made out from the northeast, but this impression is misleading with respect to the historical structure of the castle and city. People approaching the location from the southwest can still sense the imposing

impression that the high walls and towers of the former center of power of the princely Counts of Henneberg once made on its visitors. Today, Bertholdsburg Castle houses the Naturhistorische Museum. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the avant-garde discovered glass as a material and examined its utopian potential. Glass artworks like Bruno Taut’s contribution to the Werkbund Fair of 1914 or the founding of the “Crystal Chain” in 1919 are well known. Transparent, fluid, sacred, and diaphanous — literature smoothed the way to the glass avant-garde, and the

conceptualizations became concrete in places where glass was produced, for instance in Düsseldorf. Glass serves until today as a transmitter of artistic design, as an abstracting element, an engine in the project of universal lessons between art and society. The volume examines glass as a material and image of thought in an interdisciplinary perspective from the cultural

history of the twentieth century to soft matter physics. Jasmin Grande, Zentrum für Rheinlandforschung, Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf

The exhibition catalogue provides an intimate view of the Swiss contemporary artist Silvia Gertsch and her impressive oeuvre. The personal and artistic development of Gertsch, who found her preferred medium in the centuries-old technique of reverse glass painting, is revealed through the eyes of companions of many years. In her paintings, Gertsch examines

dichotomies like that of the vibrant city or serene nature and takes a critical look at society. Color and lightdark contrasts fascinate the artist; the picture carrier enables her to accentuate light and shadow. Her works show emotions and interpersonal interactions, in a world supersaturated with visual and acoustic effects.

There is something magical about these photographs; they show faces as they have never before been seen. The 360-degree portraits by the artist duo Koschies deconstruct familiar occidental views. They are not structured around a vanishing point, but instead take place entirely in the planar dimension. With their fascinating time-slit camera recordings, the artists enter into new

visual terrain – not on the basis of digital manipulation, but through creatively making use of the influence of time in the pictures themselves. Just as Impressionist pictorial forms in their day came as a shock to the perception of academically trained viewers of art, these portraits act as a substantial challenge to the eyes of their late modern addressees, whose

eyes have been inundated with traditional photography Birgit and Axel Koschies, photographers

textual essays, explanatory headnotes, maps, and full-color illustrations of key artworks, the volume will appeal to national and international audiences ranging from undergraduates and museum visitors to art historians and other scholars. Texts by a range of artists and cultural figures — including John Adams, Thomas Cole, Frederick Douglass, Mary Cassatt, Edward Hopper, Clement Greenberg, and Cindy

Sherman — are grouped according to historical era alongside additional featured artists. John Davis, Smithsonian Institution, Washington Michael Leja, University of Pennsylvania School of Arts

Single volumes

A General History of Chinese Art comprises six volumes with a total of nine parts, spanning from the Prehistoric Era until the 3rd year of Xuantong during the Qing Dynasty (1911). The work provides a comprehensive compilation of in-depth studies of the development of art throughout the subsequent reign of Chinese dynasties and explores the emergence of a wide range of artistic categories such as but not limited to music, dance, acrobatics, singing, storytelling, painting, calligraphy, sculpture, architecture, and crafts. Unlike previous reference books, A General History of Chinese Art offers a broader overview of the notion of Chinese art by asserting a more diverse and less material understanding of arts, as has often been the case in Western scholarship. Fundamental work on the art history of EastCentral Europe European networks

9 783422 069626

56

The time period from 1570 to 1670 was an epoch of large-scale wars. But during this time of crisis in East-Central Europe the arts were in no way silent. One important factor was the migra-tion of artists within East-Central Europe as well as from the west and south of the continent to this region. The painters and sculptors who moved worked for the

Bohemian, Moravian, or Polish-Lithuanian nobility, the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, who wanted to obtain the best artists in Europe for his court in Prague, and, not least, the religious orders, which brought a new formal language to East-Central Europe in the course of the CounterReformation, contrib-uted to multifaceted artistic work during the long

transition from the late Renaissance to the Baroque. Agnieszka Gąsior, Director of the Schlesisches Museum zu Görlitz Marius Winzeler, Director of the Grünes Gewölbes of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden

New perspectives on global art history Case studies from South Asia

9 783110 716290

57

The book responds to the challenge of the global turn in the humanities from the perspective of art history. A global art history, it argues, need not follow the logic of economic globalization nor seek to bring the entire world into its fold. Instead, it draws on a theory of transculturation to explore key moments of an art history that can no longer be approached through a

facile globalism. How can art historical analysis theorize relationships of connectivity that have characterized cultures and regions across distances? How can it meaningfully handle issues of commensurability or its absence among cultures? By shifting the focus of enquiry to South Asia, the five meditations that make up this book seek to translate intellectual insights

of experiences beyond Euro–America into globally intelligible analyses. Monica Juneja, info

This book is a long overdue study of art history from a decolonial perspective. It first presents decoloniality as a new definition of the modern era, in which the conquering of the Americas and the Atlantic are central. The study of art of the last 2,500 years is shown to be part of the European colonial-capitalistic project of the subalternizing and making-dependent of a supposed other, and provides detailed presentations of the methodologies and discourses, with all their coloniality. Indigenous, Afro-diasporic, Latin American, and African

artists and scholars provide unfamiliar perspectives and a universal concept of art that is able to counteract the asymmetrical power relationships in the European study of art. Carolin Overhoff Ferreira, professor of art history at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp).

Remnants are a challenge for the museum as an institution. They are ambiguous figures, and their attributions open up and thus contribute to transcending the taxonomic, disciplinary, architectural, and institutional boundaries of museums. They can be found everywhere — in exhibition spaces as well as storage depots, and in laboratories just as in the administration. In each of these contexts, there are respectively different forms of professional self-conception, knowledge, and practical handling that determine the status of remnants.

The volume contributes to specifying terms such as remnant, trash, traces, and boundaries more precisely within the context of the museum and to reassessing them for debates in conservation, curating, art history, and museum anthropology. Nina Samuel, Felix Sattler, Humboldt University, Berlin

By the end of the 18th century, notions of “forces of nature” (Naturkräfte) were increasingly discussed across disciplinary bounds: attraction and repulsion, vital forces and electric fluids, formative drives and biological organisms were examined as forces linked to ‘natural’ processes. German Romantic literature, science, and philosophy — from Schelling and Novalis to Günderrode and Hölderlin — pondered interrelated notions of forces considered as dynamic and continually active in nature — forces which, in turn, also appeared to shape human

actions, social structures, and cultural developments. This volume explores the points of reference for, approaches to, and afterlives of Romantic conceptions and representations of natural forces at the intersection of natural sciences and cultural imaginaries. Art develops its effect through contemplation. Even before we interpret it, we grasp it by means of inspired seeing, by “feeling our way,” thus giving rise to an opinion. It precedes an interpretation of the content — and the interplay of form and content becomes the experience of art. Unlike classic guidebooks, this publication is dedicated to the

aesthetic experience, which the comparative contemplation and presentation of masterpieces from the Gemäldegalerie and Bode Museum focuses on beyond the boundaries of art forms. The sensual experience of art via forms, surfaces, materiality, movement, and their significance is curated for readers based on some fifty selected works over various

epochs and clearly communicated in numerous detailed views.

Indispensable aid for classifying objects in museums and collections First epoch-transcending overview of all common types of knives until the first century of the Common Era

This volume deals with knives and harvesting equipment in Central Europe from their first appearance until the first century of the Common Era. Knives have accompanied human beings since the Paleolithic and became useful tools, weapons, and status symbols over the course of the millennia. An epoch-transcending overview of all common types of

knives is provided here for the first time. Harvesting equipment appeared with the new economy of the Neolithic period — first made of silex, then bronze, and finally sickles and scythes of iron. Cutting devices also include scissors, an innovative type of tool that revolutionized textile craft. Each type is described in detail, supplemented with information on dating

and propagation as well as further literature. Ulrike Weller, Landesmuseum Hannover Ronald Heynowski, Archaeological Heritage Office in Saxony, Dresden

For thirty years Barbara Holub’s socially and politically engaged art has linked urban development, social issues, and artistic interventions. As an accumulative process of participatory action, Holub’s projects question the role of art in society, whether in the context of art itself, in urban public space, or in relation to corporations. This monograph offers a detailed view

of Barbara Holub’s extensive body of work as well as her projects with transparadiso at the interface of art, architecture, and urbanism, for which she coined the term “silent activism.” Rather than directly propagating activism, Holub persistently creates performative situations for dialogic action with the aim of questioning norms and crossing boundaries.

The work of Friedl Dicker-Brandeis (1898–1944) occupies a key position in the broader history of the Austrian avant-garde while also deepening our understanding of modernism. Her work covers an impressive range of media and genres in the visual and applied arts. Influenced by her studies at Vienna’s Kunstgewerbeschule (which later became the University of

Applied Arts Vienna), the Itten Private School, and the Bauhaus in Weimar, she worked as a painter, stage designer, architect, designer in Vienna and Berlin, in exile, and as a deportee. This book explores the heterogeneity of Dicker’s work, reconstructs her artistic strategies and references to aesthetic and political discourses from the 1920s to the 1940s, and doc-

The challenges of a complex and volatile world require solutions that reconcile divergent perspectives and interests. In schools, interdisciplinarity has been integrated within curricula for decades, yet it is rarely applied as a collaborative practice. Communication between different fields of research is not enough. Without meaningful collaboration, opportunities to connect are lost, and teachers and students fail to benefit from the experience of lived interdisciplinarity.

A new periodical, entitled EDU:TRANSVERSAL, presents the latest findings of national and international transversal research as well as the state of the art of interdisciplinarity in didactics. The aim of this annual publication is to stimulate a transversal turn in education. The Austrian cultural sector is facing its greatest existential crisis of the Second Republic. The conceptual foundations of Austrian cultural policy date from the 1970s and are approaching their limits due to the pandemic. This book highlights the urgency of renegotiating the relationship between the cultural sector and wider society through artists, mediators, and users. Together with several long-standing cultural observers, Michael Wimmer sets out to find a contemporary cultural policy. His goal is to ensure that

art and culture are given the status in society that they deserve. Conceived as a dialogical polemic, the central aspects of a new agenda for cultural policy are negotiated in order to initiate a broader discussion of cultural policy. ENGLISH DECEMBER 2021, DE GRUYTER

The attempt to demarcate things somehow always seems to go wrong. Boundaries, no matter how carefully drawn, are leaky. Things (concepts, languages, cells, symptoms, objects, values, people, and other species) are identified, multiply, circulate, and disappear again. The transdisciplinary anthology Fake Hybrid Sites Palimpsest. Essays on Leakages is dedicated to a series of productive leakages and permeabilities, focusing attention on composite systems, attachments, infestations, and perturbations.

The essays — composed of words and images — navigate between disciplines and practices and address a variety of objects and structures: blood, species, viruses, and archives; networks of laws, ideologies, languages, and labor; imaginaries of bodies, fashion, art, copy, and poetry. Dragons have many visages. They usually live in fire, carry titles and crowns, and are figments of the human imagination. Their animal appearance is represented as “fiery red” in Judeo-Christian scriptures. In the Far East, the dragon is a more ambivalent figure: celestial dragons act as gods and benefactors, elevating kings to sons of dragons and playing the game of opposites with the dragons of the underworld. Alternating between motifs of fire and ash, this book offers insights into a

fantasy world in prose and poetry and spans an arc from there to four international artists as part of their exhibition KLIMT revisited to mark the 150th anniversary of Gustav Klimt’s birth. Having first conquered the movie screen a hundred years ago, dragons have held their own in the medium of film right up to the present day. “This is the story of a man who took part in a dance contest.” It is thus that Argentine journalist and author Leila Guerriero opens her book. It tells the most difficult of all epic stories: that of the common man. This is an electrifying work that spans the genres of journalism and fiction. It tells a moving and strangely intimate story about malambo, a traditional

dance of the Argentine gauchos, and about the Malambo Festival of Laborde in the southeast of the Argentinian province of Córdoba. It is also about Rodolfo González Alcántara, who won the dance competition in 2012. Leila Guerriero is a gifted chronicler. Her internationally acclaimed work A Simple Story was published in Spanish in 2013 and in English in 2017,

and now appears in German for the first time, in a translation by Angelica Ammar. Leila Guerriero, journalist, reporter, editor, and writer, lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina

The main title of this second volume of Writings on Contemporary Art is borrowed from Claude Lévi-Strauss, whose thinking influenced a generation. Inspired by Marcel Proust, LéviStrauss wrote about the processes of producing painting, music, literature, calling the technique described by Proust “double articulation.” This volume focuses primarily on works of art in which the “first-order units” are themselves artistic works that are cited, recombined, and reworked. The concepts of “primary objects” and of “double articulation”

deepen our understanding of the disruption of sequences and the disturbance of cultural traditions. The works of art discussed in this book inscribe themselves in a context of transmission that is modified and renewed for experience in the present. “Exorcism and Psychoanalysis” is the title of a book by Hugo Ball that was planned but never realized. Ball, with his partner Emmy Hennings, was one of the founding figures of Dadaism in Zurich after abandoning his studies of philosophy and working in theater. However, they soon abandoned Dadaism and pursued a religious way of life until Ball’s early death. Sketches, dispositions, and notations for the book project from Ball’s bequeathed papers have been made available for the first time in transcribed and edited facsimile form.

Ball was convinced that psychoanalysis needed to be expanded to encompass exorcistic knowledge. His goal was to critically contrast modern forms of therapy with historical practices of exorcism. Ball’s notes provide insight into his obsessive preoccupation with demonology and the devil. Hugo Ball (1886–1927), author, Dadaist, studies on the history of Christian church/saints Magnus Wieland, Swiss Literary Archive, Bern
