We are proud members of

Person-centred care is a fast-growing philosophy that seeks to change the culture of today’s long-term residential care settings from institutions to cooperative environments in which residents want to live and in which those who care for them enjoy working. This pioneering approach provides a framework for remodelling the world of long-term care of older people. It focuses on creating an environment that encourages the continuation of personal growth.

The essence of person-centred care is simple: to teach ourselves to see residential and care homes as communities with older people at the centre. Creating communities that support active care, interaction with others and healthy lifestyles makes for a happier, healthier and more independent life for those we care for.

GERATEC’s vision

GERATEC’s dream is to transform and remodel long-term care in South Africa. To support this transformation, we embrace the Eden Alternative philosophy (see page 17) for creating person-centred communities. Our vision is excellence in personcentred care. This means creating the freedom for older people to live in a place that is truly home, and make their own decisions. Through this approach, we encourage the continuation of a person’s growth rather than manage their decline. GERATEC’s values of integrity, respect, compassion and innovation underpin all aspects of our business. We are passionate about continually raising the bar when it comes to quality of service, meeting the needs of each individual and moving away from medically nursing those in long-term care. Instead, we focus on encouraging residents’ independence, supporting their choices and acting on what’s important to each person. We encourage everyone to participate in making decisions and we truly listen when they speak. Our focus on developing employees as well as residents is holistic and personcentred. Managers and employees who are passionate about their work can only make for a happier world for older people.

Rayne Stroebel 4

Founder and managing director

We would like to create the freedom for older people to live in a place that is truly home, and make their own decisions.

Our partners

Strategic partnerships create valuable opportunities for sharing passion, purpose, resources and expertise. With this in mind, GERATEC actively seeks opportunities to establish and grow ethical partnerships with and between care providers.

Our network extends across South Africa and internationally as a member of the International Association of Homes and Services for Ageing (IAHSA). Through this network of partnerships, a wide range of opportunities has become available to everyone involved. This collaboration transforms the philosophy of person-centred care. Working together, we effect greater change and build on each other’s strengths to create stronger and more sustainable organisations. By empowering managers, boards, employees and volunteers, we can raise standards of care, ensure best practice and improve the quality of life for older people.

GERATEC aspires to instil a culture of “this is my home” in each care centre or village we work with. The aim is to create a healthy, clean and pleasant place in which to live and work.

Every employee is vital in reaching this goal. As such, we encourage an ethos of being visible, friendly, professional and helpful. As the saying goes “The best part of teamwork is that you always have someone on your side,”. A clean home is an essential part of creating a caring, family atmosphere. Thanks to GERATEC’s training and guidance, the housekeeping and laundry employees see their jobs as an important part of caring for the residents. The cleaning teams become part of the residents’ lives by creating a home and spending time with them. Our employees are always happy to help and take great pride in their work.

GERATEC’s associates

1 The 10 principles of the Eden Alternative The three plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom account for the bulk of suffering among our Elders. An Elder-centred community commits to creating a human habitat where life revolves around close and continuing contact with plants, animals, and children. It is these relationships that provide the young and old alike with a pathway to a life worth living. Loving companionship is the antidote to loneliness. Elders deserve easy access to human and animal companionship. An Elder-centred community creates opportunity to give as well as receive care. This is the antidote to helplessness. An Elder-centred community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creating an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interactions and happenings can take place. This is the antidote to boredom. Meaningless activity corrodes the human spirit. The opportunity to do things that we find meaningful is essential to human health. Medical treatment should be the servant of genuine human caring, never its master. An Elder-centred community honours its Elders by de-emphasizing top-down bureaucratic authority, seeking instead to place the maximum possible decisionmaking authority into the hands of the Elders or into the hands of those closest to them. Creating an Elder-centred community is a never-ending process. Human growth must never be separated from human life. Wise leadership is the lifeblood of any struggle against the three plagues. For it, there can be no substitute. For more information contact Magda Pienaar 021 461 7754 magda@edenalt.co.za Rayne Stroebel rayne@edenalt.co.za
