Successfully introduced PAXI Parcel Coverincluding two product offerings: R10 for up to R2500 cover or R20 for up to R5000 cover! We kept our promise and delivered 98% of our parcels within the promised delivery timeframe. Our new Whatsapp channel received 1.85 million messages within the first 3 months!

HERE’S TO ANOTHER YEAR OF REACHING MILESTONES, DELIVERING PARCELS AND MAKING LIFE EASIER WITH PAXI!

Hi 5 Dynamos! Here we stand at the end of another tough year and we can say, ‘Yeahh! We have survived.’ We are the fortunate ones. We work for a company that cares and makes a difference. We make sure that, this Christmas, thousands of parents can afford to give their children a gift and clothe them for the new school year. As we count our blessings of the past year, let’s remember:

Your job is the dream of the unemployed Your house is the dream of the homeless Your smile is the dream of the depressed Your health is the dream of those who are sick Beautiful things happen when you distance yourself from negativity. Find something to be grateful for. Enjoy this edition filled with positive stories.

BERTIE’S LETTER

Hi 5 Dynamos! And so the 2021 financial year eventually ended! I recall from last year I said that we will never have such a challenging year again, but life has an unexpected way to keep on challenging us. Whilst 2020 will probably be remembered as a year of much illness and global economic destruction, 2021 will be remembered not only as the year that we as South Africans were severely challenged by violence and the physical destruction of our stores, but also for the year in which PEP Dynamos rose to the occasion to stand together and rebuild in the most emphatic fashion. A special mention goes out to the Sales teams in the Eastern and Central Division as well as the store development team for your hard work! We finished the year with an 8% increase in sales – helped by a lower base from last year, but limited by the loss of 283 stores for much of the last three months of the year. We saw how our remarkable customers are really being challenged by a weak economy as well as record unemployment in South Africa. But even in these desperate times, we have had many successes: we opened a huge number of new stores (124 of them), sales and transactions in Home, FMCG and PEPmoney grew by over 20%, and although we had to close 283 stores, not a single Dynamo lost their job!

Other areas of our business also performed well: The Babies department grew sales by more than 10%, PAXI had profit growth of over 100%, Male Footwear grew great market share and the sale of Smartphones was excellent at the start of the financial year. At the same time, we managed to keep our prices way below the competition and improved our overall margins. Some areas did not perform as well, and improvements have already been planned to address those areas. As another success, our overall cost management was great. All areas in the business contributed to this performance, but a special word of thanks goes out to the Distribution Centres and the Sales team for their responsible cost management – they have been spending smartly, continuing to invest in the right areas and busting those bad costs. The final result of our performance was that we managed to recover from last year's lockdown-induced reduction in profits and be back up to profit levels higher than those from 2019! Looking forward to 2022, it will be another tough year for our customers. All focus should therefore be on making sure we drive the sales line – continue to open stores, improve our stock availability, provide great service to our customers (especially during money in the market) and deliver the lowest price. A special word of encouragement for our Dynamos in stores – keep on delighting your customers, take care of your fellow Dynamos and your stores and lastly, all the best for the upcoming festive season – may you sell a lot and enjoy some time with family and friends over this special period.

MESSAGE FROM STEFAN

Hi 5 Dynamos! I feel honoured and humbled to address you for the first time as the CEO of PEP. What a privilege to be part of the family again after a short stint at PEP Africa. I have learnt so many lessons and hopefully grown as an individual and I am ready for this wonderful new chapter in my life as your leader. I’m starting off with PEP at a point where it has achieved so many great things, and I'm taking over from a truly great leader in Jaap. I believe this is the starting block for many more great things that we will achieve together in the future. We have Sikhula KunYe as our superpower, we care for one another and we make a difference in millions of people’s lives. In my eyes that is a recipe for success. We must always remain humble but focussed, with a clear vision and plan. And we must keep our sense of humour, whilst staying tough as individuals. COVID-19 and looting couldn’t get us down! No way! In fact, it has brought out the best in us! Our culture is stronger than ever and our customers gave us the highest accolade in South Africa. If we remain focussed on our customers with positive energy, they will be delighted and continue to support us. I believe only wonderful things will still come from this country and nation, and we as the Dynamos of PEP will play an enormous role in this. I need your advice and help, Dynamos, to become the best leader I can be. Please help me! Always remember that my blood is PEP blue! Good luck for all the hard work and sacrifices you will make over the Christmas and Back-to-School periods. Enjoy delighting our customers and giving them many magic moments to smile about!

Sikhula KunYe!

We say goodbye to our CEO, Jaap It was a sad – but also exciting – day when Jaap Hamman handed over the reins to Stefan Vogesto become the new CEO of PEP. Stefan used to be the CEO of PEP Africa. Jaap, who is now the CEO of Ackermans, had been the CEO of PEP for the past five years and has been in PEP’s employ since 1999. He leaves behind an amazing legacy, having led PEP not only through some of its toughest times with COVID-19 and the riots, but also through some of PEP’s most successful years. We wish him well and hope that he will always have fond memories of PEP, Sikhula KunYe and all the Dynamos.

PEP Account gives our customers access to credit for the first time It was a big day in the history of PEP when PEP Account was launched on 18 October in stores nationwide, giving our customers access to credit for the first time ever since PEP opened its doors in 1965. Times are changing. 60% of our PEP customers already have some form of credit, and many have indicated that they would love it at PEP as well. Customers can shop now and pay later, and get even more products at our lowest prices. It gives our customers more ways to pay as they can now use cash/card, lay-byes or their PEP Account. In addition, they can use their PEP Account card at Ackermans, Dunns, Shoecity, Tekkietown, Refinery and Dealz to shop. Dynamos may have a PEP Account card, but will not qualify for their discount when using this card.

Meet our new CEO,

Stefan Voges

“I love the humanity of the brand of PEP! I cannot wait for us to take this business to new exciting heights. My door is always open for suggestions and ideas. It’s hard to know what the right thing is to do, but it is much harder to follow through and do it. It’s up to us to make it happen!”

MEET OUR NEW CEO

“I believe we are surrounded by quality people with enormous potential to grow in PEP and in South Africa. Our country has enormous potential if good leaders are allowed to stand up and get the support they deserve!” he says. < The Voges’s two miniature Schnauzers, Sherry and Coco.

PEP has always had a close relationship with the Northern Cape, and it’s therefore no wonder that our new CEO, Stefan Voges, was born and raised in Postmasburg – a mere 200 km away from Upington, where PEP was born. PEP has always been part of his life. “My first girlfriend’s father was even the PEP branch manager in town!” he says, laughing. Stefan defines happiness by the small things in life, like having a happy family, being content in your work and experiencing new and beautiful places. He loves being in nature and leading an active lifestyle, playing golf and riding his bicycle. He also loves socialising, even though he is an introvert and not the life of the party. He loves good food with a glass of wine. And he believes that there is always time to laugh! He describes his shortcomings as not being a morning person, sometimes seeming to be unapproachable when he is in a reflective mood and becoming

too passionate about a topic. He is tolerant of people and believes that good intentions and a can-do attitude can bring you a long way. He hates inconsiderate people and believes you should always take other people's point of view into consideration.

“A sign of a good leader is not how many followers you have, but how many leaders you create.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi He loves the Kalahari and Jongensfontein. That’s where he and his family truly find peace. His favourite meal is lamb rogan josh with naan bread, and he wouldn’t mind sharing it with the likes of Gandhi – who he finds inspirational. Another favourite dish of

his would be a fillet of sole, and if he could've, he would have loved to share it with his late father, a surveyor who taught him many lessons in life. He hates repetition and administration, and loves spending his time reading fiction or watching a good movie. The love of his life is Zanelle, to whom he has been married for the past 18 years. They have a daughter, Zahn (13), and a son, Nicolaas (11). They also have two miniature Schnauzers called Sherry and Coco. He believes that everybody is cool in their own right! His father taught him to appreciate and learn from the talented people around him. Stefan describes himself as driven, authentic and logical. His biggest dream is to grow old with good health and to send balanced, happy children into the world. He doesn’t want to be consumed by the hurriedness of life, and rather appreciates every minute of it.

Barrett results are out

Our culture

keeps on growing! In August and September this year it was time again to see how healthy our culture is with the Barrett International culture survey. The results are out and our culture was rated even stronger than what it was during the last survey done in 2019. In 2019 our culture rated 86% and this year it rated 90%. In comparison, the global average of companies is 50% and that of retailers is 52%. International studies have shown that companies who had strong and healthy cultures before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic have come out even stronger on the other side. The same applies the other way around. Those companies which had toxic cultures before the pandemic rate even worse now.

8

DECEMBER 2021

What’s interesting is that our survey went out at one of the worst times ever in the history of our company, just after the looting took place in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Our culture is, however, what pulled us through the tough times. The Eastern Division, which was the hardest affected, rated 96% in their survey. This is equal to the highest score Barrett has ever recorded. “Our culture is basically as good as it gets!” says our People Support Executive, Anita Carollisen. “Thank you, Dynamos, for participating in the survey. It is amazing to know that, even after Covid and the looting, our culture grew even stronger than what it was before.”

Energy saving project saves PEP millions South Africa has been facing a severe energy crisis the past few years, with the price of electricity skyrocketing. After salaries this is PEP’s biggest expense. Back in the day, our stores used T8 fluorescent lamps. In 2012, 180,000 of these lamps were replaced by more energy-efficient lamps, which reduced our energy usage for lighting by 34%. Recently PEP did another LED roll-out and replaced 310,000 lamps, leading to a further reduction in our energy usage for lighting of 33% . This reduction is equivalent to the amount of energy used by 1,500 households on average. The project will save PEP R135 million during its lifecycle, not to mention a R5 million tax break. In the future more linear LEDs will be rolled out, which will have an even bigger cost saving effect. The team is also constantly working on getting the colour of the lamp perfect so that the products display at their ultimate rendering potential.

PEP opened 2,500th store! In October PEP opened its 2,500th store! This is an amazing achievement in a time when we are also having to reopen so many stores due to the looting that took place in July. Well done, Dynamos! May this company of ours just grow stronger and stronger every day and delight more and more customers closer to where they live! DECEMBER 2021

PEP Academy shout-out As the year draws to a close, we offer a big shout-out to all the PEP Academy Dynamos – learners, teachers, caterers, academy managers, mentors, principals, parents – for keeping the doors of our PEP Academies open and for keeping learners engaged during another year of COVID-19 uncertainty. One of the main indicators of the health and wellbeing of the Academy programme is learner attendance. Over many years, PEP Academy has achieved a learner attendance of about 98%. This year, although some academies have been particularly tested by COVID-19 scheduling and other challenges, most academies have reported attendance of over 95% throughout the year. This shows that, thanks to a collective effort, parents and learners have continued to see the benefit of attending, particularly given the huge amounts of schooling time lost over the last two years. Well done to all for keeping the learners engaged, excited and in their PEP Academy classrooms.

10

DECEMBER 2021

Good news for 2022

This year the Grade 5 programme was put on hold. The good news is that a growth in budgets will allow us to bring the Grade 5 programme back to some schools next year. The Academy plans to reintroduce the Grade 4 life orientation (LO) programme next year. This programme encourages learners to think about values and citizenship.

PEP Academy Magazine

Soon we will be saying goodbye to PEP Academy 2021 learners as schools prepare to

close for the December break. The picture shows learners at Inxiweni Primary in Tembisa Gauteng at the beginning of the year, happy to receive their PEP Academy “hello” backpacks with stationery and other goodies. At the end of the year, learners also receive a “goodbye” pack with books to read over the holidays. This year, PEP Academy decided to try something different by including its own especially published PEP Academy magazine filled with stories and activities. We are hoping that this becomes an annual publication and that we might be able to distribute this magazine beyond our PEP Academy schools.

Latest photographic studio at Central Office takes PEP into a new age We have two styleshoot machines which are built for digital platforms such as social media and our website.

1 This machine shoots from above on a flat lay table.

Marketing recently closed off the old photographic studio at Central Office and had the old Welkom boardroom converted into a state of the art Digital Photography studio. The new studio caters for three types of photography: 1. Vertical Product Photography 2. Horizontal Product Photography 3. Photography using an Infinity Curve

2

This machine shoots vertically on a mannequin.

This combination of photographic capabilities will: 1. reduce our production time and increase productivity. 2. significantly enhance the quality of our photos. 3. allow three photographic productions to run simultaneously. 4. enable us to photograph models, influencers, celebs, etc in our very own studio with the Infinity Curved backdrop!

The studio will be used to produce digital photographic and video content for all online platforms, including our social media pages, website, blog and any new platforms that we will be launching in this financial year – i.e.: TikTok, Youtube Shorts, etc.

UDEMY BUSINESS

Where Sikhula KunYe and online learning meet In true Sikhula KunYe spirit, the Training and Development team was on a mission to cultivate a culture of learning and growing together. A question we asked ourselves was: “How do we allow Dynamos to learn and develop themselves in an agile manner; taking learning into their own hands?” This is when Udemy came along. Udemy Business has allowed us to foster our learning culture and has provided learning opportunities that were never possible previously. Udemy Business is an online learning platform with more than 5,500 top-rated, engaging courses that Dynamos are able to access any time, anywhere (even on a mobile device – how cool is that!). With Udemy Business, Dynamos have access to incredible professional development content to help advance their careers, or to simply help learn a skill that they are curious about; whether it’s learning a new programming language or mastering a new yoga pose! Dynamos can enrol themselves into courses that they believe will add value to their work and personal lives. They have the flexibility to start and stop a course at any point.

Since Udemy was introduced

in January 2020, more than 1,000 Dynamos have been

given the opportunity to learn via Udemy. These Dynamos have spent more than 14,000

hours learning, with more than 1,400 courses watched. The top 3 popular courses included one of PEP’s very own courses.

DECEMBER 2021

Here is what some of you had to say about what you have learnt:

“I have learnt to be a better leader by developing people so that the organisation can be successful. [I have also learnt] how to behave so that you can build a strong relationship on a daily basis. Know your goals and build trust.” “Working under pressure. That one should not rely on memory storage – write things down.” “I learnt to read faster with better memory. I can do my work faster and focus on what is more important.” “On motivation, I learnt a lot; that giving people a pat on the shoulder on a well-done job gives them strength to go on and make the difference or become heroes who don’t just work for money.”

PEP’s team of executives would like to thank you for all your hard work and dedication in delighting our remarkable customers and creating magic moments!

Congratulations to FMCG for reaching R2 billion! FMCG achieved their long awaited dream and target of R2 billion during September. This big milestone came as a result of clearly defined plans and consistent hard work. This was further made possible with the support from various other teams and stakeholders. More importantly this couldn't have been achieved without our remarkable customers who bought the beautiful, practical and “Lekker” FMCG products. FMCG looks forward to their next Goal of R3 billion in four years’ time.

New sourcing office opens in Shanghai Our new Pepkor Product Solutions (PPS) sourcing office has opened in Shanghai. We are very happy to welcome them back to the Pepkor Family. #RebuildPEP It was some of the worst days in the history of PEP when 283 of our stores were affected by looting during riots in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal in July. 39 of our stores were burnt down. During this time 2,405 Dynamos had to be redeployed. Food parcels were sent to them by PEP to help them and their families during this difficult time when they struggled to have access to food. The biggest challenges were to acquire cash register drawers and scanners, and for IT to do all the cabling and installations so that stores could reopen. Four million clothes hangers had to be sent to the affected stores.

BEFORE AFTER

By the end of September the Sales team had managed to reopen 200 stores! The plan is to reopen another 43 stores before December. “This is an amazing achievement because these stores were reopened along with the normal store openings that were scheduled to take place, “ says our Sales Executive, Wynand Möller. “The Dynamos have shown that, in PEP, you never walk alone, and if you challenge the Sales team, we deliver! Thank you to each and every one of the Dynamos that worked so hard in order for us to delight our customers as quickly as possible again,” he concluded.

Dynamos

Esther Geldenhuys

who inspire

Southern Division People Support Manager.

Where are you from?

Esther started her career 12 years ago as Regional People Support Manager in the Western Cape, working with Rudi Boehme. In 2012 she was promoted to Divisional People Support Manager – Southern Division.

Who is the love of your life?

I was born and raised in Vereeniging. At age 13 I knew the Western Cape was where I wanted to live, having visited it as part of the SA netball championships tour representing the Gauteng provincial team. My dad worked seven days a week in a steel factory as a foreman, and my mom at one point had three jobs, one being a teacher, saving up for me to one day go to Stellenbosch University. Now, 19 years later, with huge gratitude for the sacrifices my parents have made, I can say that Cape Town is my hometown – forever!

My husband, Arno. He has such a kind heart and genuinely cares about people.

How do you define happiness?

What is your biggest dream?

Happiness to me is being grateful. It's being content with what you have.

Who would you like to invite the most to a meal?

Oprah Winfrey. I think she is a remarkable woman. She has forever changed my life. Growing up, I didn't miss one of her shows.

What is your favourite animal?

Our Boston Terrier named Jack – he is the best dog ever and is such a big part of our family!

What are your favourite quotes?

“We rise by lifting others.” – ROBERT INGERSOLL.

“Don't worry about being successful but work towards being significant and the success will naturally follow.” – OPRAH WINFREY

Why is PEP special to you?

Because we get to make a difference, in so many ways and for so many people. We are all equal. It's just our level of responsibility that is different.

Any advice to your 16-year-old self ?

Don’t be so afraid. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Read more books.

My biggest dream was to climb Mount Everest. In 2012 I had the huge privilege to go hiking for 22 days in the Himalayas where we covered the three highest passes in the Himalayas. Although I did not climb Everest as such, I stood across from it and looked at it!

The best advice you ever got?

My mom passed away the morning after my son was born. One of the last messages she sent me was a quote that reads: “Strength doesn't come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.”

What makes you laugh?

My husband Arno, and my beautiful son Alexander. He is just 20 months old, but boy, can he make me laugh! He is truly my sunshine child.

What are your biggest passions?

To see those whom I appointed far outshine me and do great things as they too ‘pay-itforward’ in their own and unique way.

Last word – teach us something! Just be you. Work hard. Be kind. Be brave!

BY TONI ZIMMERMAN 082 926 3368 antoinettezimm@ gmail.com

HIV in the time of COVID-19 Dynamos, when it comes to health, my approach is a lot like the Sikhula KunYe tree. Even though we separate parts of the tree for symbolism, it still forms one whole tree. When we talk about health and wellness, we often mention body, mind and spirit, but I am a whole being and therefore we need to take care of all the parts of our being. So if I am HIV+, how do I take care of myself during the COVID-19 pandemic? I found a Fast Facts sheet on www.avert.org, which is one of my go-to sites regarding HIV information, and below I’ll add my own flair to it.

FAST FACTS "Current evidence suggests that people living with HIV have a higher risk of becoming seriously ill from COVID-19. People living with HIV who are not on treatment or virally suppressed may be at an even greater risk." Yes, I agree, making sure your HIV is well managed i.e. your CD4 count is above 500 and your Viral Load is undetectable means you can live a normal healthy life. If it is not well managed, you put yourself at 32

DECEMBER 2021

a higher risk of disease – and that includes COVID-19. "Speak to a health care professional for more information on how to stay healthy." Build a good relationship with your health care provider. When they know you well, they can treat you quicker and easier. I’ve been going to the same provider for 22 years now. "As with the general population, older people living with HIV and those with other underlying health conditions should take extra precautions to prevent illness." "Try to have at least a 30 days’ supply of ART in your home. If possible, ask for three months." I found this to be very important over the past two years, and after all that has happened, this will be my protocol for the future – we never know what is around the corner. The last thing you want to be is without medication. Remember: it is consistent use of ART for the rest of your life that keeps your numbers under control. "The current COVID-19 vaccines are considered safe for people living with HIV." I remember how afraid we were in the beginning years of HIV, and I see that same fear now. Medical science

has improved enormously in the past 100 years. Look at how well we live now with ART. Yes, I am vaccinated! "We are continuing to learn about COVID-19. Remember to keep in touch with your healthcare provider and follow government advice." I have two extra points to add here: I have been taking additional supplements to improve my immunity for at least 15 years now and interestingly some of these were recommended for COVID-19 as well. This helped me greatly through the pandemic period. Attitude and mental wellbeing has been crucial for my long-term survival of HIV, which, by the way, just became 31 years in October. There have been times that I have felt down over the years too, but when that happens, I go and see a therapist or counselor just like I see a doctor when my physical body is unwell.

Dynamos, the busy season is upon us. Take good care of your whole selves and when you can, take time to rest, relax and recover.

Sikhula KunYe Toni Zimmermann

SIKHULA KUNYE

Always challenge yourself to do great things. When did you start working at PEP, and in which position? I joined PEP in 2005 as a sales assistant at 389 Pongola. In 2018 I was promoted to store manager at 6327 Ndumo.

What makes you excited about PEP?

Sikhula KunYe makes me very excited because we grow up day by day.

What would you say is your best quality and why?

My best quality is helping my fellow Dynamos solve problems. I don't want to see other people

struggling. It makes me smile knowing that I’ve helped someone.

How do you like spending your free time?

I spend my time at church, worshiping God all the time.

What are you addicted to? I am addicted to social media and listening to gospel music.

If you had one wish, what would that be?

My wish is to help other people to improve their lives, giving them hope for a better life, and motivating them.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenging experience was when I fought to decrease stock loss from 6.36% to 0.26% with my team. It was tough. I felt like quitting my job, but I told myself that quitting is not an option.

Any tips or advice to the Dynamos? Dynamos, there are a lot of opportunities at PEP. Focus on PEP’s values. Smile and be the difference. Keep on delighting all our remarkable customers and never give up. Always challenge yourself to do great things.
