“When you get home to your spouse, kids, dog, etc… Before you open the door, put a smile on your face! It doesn’t matter how your day went. Or what you’re doing next. Or if you’re starving. For thirty seconds, really show that you’re elated to see them. Make them feel like you were looking forward to getting back home. Show up. Wide eyes. Big grin. A hug or a high five. And if you’ve had one of those days that you really don’t feel like it… Do it anyway. At least pretend that you’re excited to see them. After all, they’re your favourite people in the whole world. I hope. “They deserve the best version of you showing up at the front door. You can talk about your crummy day in a minute. Right now? Start your homecoming on a high note. Who knows. Maybe your attitude and outlook will improve because you went through the motions. Because you tried. Showing a little gratitude for everything you have to come home to can improve a sour mood in a hurry. Now, I know what you’re thinking: ‘That seems like a cheesy, tiny thing, man. Hardly an earthshattering revelation.’ But your attitude sets the tone for the rest of the evening within fifteen seconds of walking in the door. So really, it’s not tiny at all. It’s a huge deal. Because you come home every day. And the things you do every day grind on you.
“Jordan Peterson says if you can fix 25 little things like ‘coming home,’ you will have an extraordinary life. Taking your family to an expensive restaurant is insignificant. Your kid’s fancy birthday party will be forgotten within weeks. The holiday you went on is a flash in the pan. Coming home? That’s your whole life. Fix it. Start today.” Dynamos, let’s take our GSTY home too! Enjoy this edition of KwaPEP filled with your amazing stories! SK!

BERTIE’S LETTER
Thank you! A huge thank you must go to our Dynamos in stores after a very busy festive and Back-toSchool period – you made sure we had the “Best Summer Ever!” The good news is that our sales performance over the past few months has shown improvement. Many more stores have made budget and in some areas, exceeded expectations. It all started with magnificent Black Friday sales performance – in fact, this day was the biggest sales day ever! Customers came in huge numbers to shop with us and they were rewarded with great promotions across all departments. Following Black Friday, we were very successful over both the festive season and the Back-to-School period. Within our business, CFH had one of their best seasons over the past few years. Part of their good performance was owed to reduced markdowns since the planning of our stock and availability is improving. And even in the current tough economic environment, our BPL is still above target! I must especially compliment the Babies department for their impressive sales and profit growth. Cellular had an excellent sales period as we learned from the challenges experienced last year and ensured our availability of stock was much better. FMCG and PEPmoney continued with their impressive double-digit growth. If you compare the sales performance of PEP to many other listed competitors, you will see why we continue to win market share as customers We should continue to stick to our cause of making it possible for everyone to look and feel good even though our customers will have less money in their pocket.
2
MARCH 2020
“It will be the retailers that do things differently and stick to their cause that will be successful over the long term.” are voting with their hard-earned money for PEP. I don’t think that the current economic environment will change any time soon and that is why we should continue to stick to our cause of making it possible for everyone to look and feel good even though our customers will have less money in their pocket. The great news for us is that we have a good business model that supports us to be successful.
Blow the whistle It’s your responsibility to report any dishonest behaviour of customers or fellow Dynamos (including management) regarding the misuse of company assets. Nobody will know that you reported the incident. You do not have to give your name and nobody can trace your call.
As we all know, you can only increase your profits if you sell more or spend less. That means that when sales are tough to make, we must be very focussed on managing our cost of doing business. We should continue to spend our money smartly - how can we get more in return for the same amount of money spent? How can we do things differently than in the past to get a better return on our investment? Where should we be investing for the future to make us more agile and efficient in our day-to-day operations? It will be the retailers that do things differently and stick to their cause that will be successful over the long term.
Follow-up on your lead is guaranteed.
Dynamos, our challenge continues to be improving sales while managing our costs well. But I know that when you challenge the Sales team, they deliver! All the best for the next few months and please stay as committed as you are to delight our customers on a daily basis.

JAAP’S LETTER
The magic begins when you step outside your comfort zone It’s wonderful to speak to you in the first edition of KwaPEP of 2020! May this be a year of plenty! We began 2020 with smiles on our faces after the best sales day ever with Black Friday in November, a month that also saw growth in market share. December was a good month in which we had a solid sales performance as we gave more Christmas for way less. In January, our Back-to-School sales rocketed as everybody knows that we are the number one school shop! Thank you, Dynamos, for making this our best summer ever! Your hard work really paid off!
We have received the results of the Barrett culture survey and we want to thank everyone who took part in completing the survey. We have a growing culture and we have to keep nurturing and growing it every single day. We are excited that the results of the Barrett culture survey showed that we still have one of the healthiest company cultures in the world! February saw the launch of the Be Yourself campaign and our underwear ranges flew off the shelves just in time for Valentine’s Day. Now we are getting ready for Easter and all the exciting winter promotions that lie ahead. Everybody is excited about the Senzela Wena (we do it for you) campaign where we take our Dynamos through a journey into our customers’ lives through research, talking to our customers and retelling their amazing stories. Every quarter of this year a new chapter into the lives of our customers will be launched. At our Central Office, all the departments are busy with strategic sessions which the executive team will then use to formulate PEP’s growth plan
– this will be revealed at PEP’s senior leadership conference in May. The theme of these sessions is Leapfrog, which inspires the question, “Where do you see the future of your department if there were no limitations?” This fits in nicely with our monthly theme – step outside your comfort zone. Just imagine what magic you can achieve if you start doing the things you see as challenges. Where can you be in the future if you leapfrog over all the obstacles and leave behind the cosiness of your comfort zone? Dynamos, I know that 2020 will again be a tough year economically, but we will be a beacon of hope for our remarkable customers. A one-stop shop where they know they can find everything they want and need to make them look and feel good at the lowest prices – and, to top it all off, be served by the best and friendliest Sales team in Southern Africa! That’s why, Dynamos, every transaction, interaction and connection counts! I challenge you to do something you have never done before in 2020. Because, as you know, a comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there! And we are growing together! Sikhula KunYe!

Survey shows Sikhula KunYe is still healthy and strong Every two years, a survey is conducted by the international company, Barrett, to determine if our culture, Sikhula KunYe, is still healthy and strong. At the end of last year, all Dynamos up to store manager level
took part in the survey. The results show, once again, that PEP ranks as one of the few companies in South Africa with an inspiring culture! Congratulations, Dynamos!
This, however, places a huge responsibility on our shoulders to continue growing ourselves and our culture and to keep our culture strong and alive for many more years to come! Sikhula KunYe! MARCH 2020

SENZELA WENA IS HERE Hi 5 Dynamos. At PEP we believe that there’s nothing more important than our customers; that’s why we’re celebrating them with our new customer campaign, Senzela Wena - which literally means “We do it for you”.
Vicky Sampson & Indoni Dancers | Beyers van der Merwe, Chief Executive: Marketing | Vicky Sampson
Senzela Wena was launched at central office on the 23 January 2020. It was a loud, colourful and vibrant celebration - as you would expect from PEP. Central Office Dynamos were dressed in their Proudly South African best. We had the dazzling Vicky Sampson and her dance troupe perform the brand new Senzela Wena song. Don’t worry Dynamos, you’ll be hearing the song on FeelGood FM soon and we’re sure it’s going to get you dancing and singing along.

Now that’s
how you do it! When Maria Ndwalane joined 8013 Izingolweni as store manager, her team was reluctant to be receptive to her as she came from a different town. She decided to involve her team in feeding the needy at a soup kitchen and arranged for a PEP donation. Afterwards, the chief and the counsellor of the soup kitchen came to the store to thank PEP for their help. This changed everything, and the team grew strong! “The store was not performing well on stock loss when I took over. Currently, we are number two in the stock loss performance – that is number two from the top!” says Maria. For the first time in two years, the store also ended in second place for sales performance. And the store is continuing its success story with great sales for December too.
Waseem Timol shared a story to Facebook: “We went shopping. My wife left her cellphone in our trolley (I know, right?! But sometimes, with crying kids and full hands, these things happen). We only realised two hours later, at which point you start making peace with the fact that you will never again see your phone, or the half a lifetime of memories in photos on there (you know the feeling).
Well done, team 8013!

Magic Moment

“We did what we had to; lots of praying, video footage at the control centre, mall management, blocked accounts, etc. All the way knowing that we would probably have no luck. Lo and behold, later that evening we got a call from her phone! Sydney, pictured at the top, charged the phone up a little and contacted the number shown on the screen (you can send a message from your Samsung account to the person who first finds the phone, I only learnt that day). He had found the phone, still in the trolley, in a totally different store (a miracle, I know), as they were closing up. My man Sydney, store security at PEP store Southgate, went through the effort of charging the phone and calling us (while he was in the taxi on his way home). He kept it safe all night and returned it to us the next day. I honestly had no words to say when he called. I couldn't thank him enough. I truly felt a sense of pride, gratitude and hope that I have never felt before. Sydney, may the world see that no kind act goes unnoticed. May there be many more Sydneys born from this story. If you're ever shopping at PEP Southgate, let him know that you've read his story. These are the everyday heroes.” MARCH 2020

Regional manager for the Outeniqua district, Suzette Wessels, said, “A gentleman approached us and said that he would like to do something good for the community in Mossel Bay at the store.” She said the man, who wanted to remain anonymous, was willing to pay off the remaining lay-by balances of 363 customers, totalling R137 000. Wessels said that the man, who lives in the Garden Route, wanted to make a difference and help people have an easier Christmas. She added that he had paid between R10 and R1300 for each of the customers,
and that, in all her years, this was the first time that she had witnessed this level of generosity. This act received a lot of news coverage and sparked a nationwide action on the Facebook group #ImStaying where people paid off other people’s lay-bys at PEP. Facebook was abuzz with pictures of smiling Dynamos collecting the lay-by parcels. At PEP, our cause is to make our customers look and feel good and it’s wonderful if our customers share this purpose.
1000’s of FEELGOOD MOMENTS PEP is the proud sponsor of Santa Shoebox, for yet another year. Over 99 700 children received a gift in 2019 due to this initiative. Well done to all our Dynamos who played an important role in assisting our customers to fill their boxes. You helped to make thousands of children look and feel good, thank you!

In 2019 the PEP Academy commissioned a research review to help them better understand the challenges learners face as they transition from foundation phase maths (Gr 1-3) to intermediate phase; and how best these challenges can be addressed in after-school centres. In response to the findings and recommendations of this research, the PEP Academy has brought on board a new maths provider for our Grade 4 and 5 classes.
NEWS
CASME (Centre for the Advancement of Science and Maths Education) is a non-profit education development organisation that has, for the past 35 years, provided training, development and support to mathematics and science teachers in rural and township schools in South Africa. Based on the research review, training is being provided to assist academy teachers to facilitate fun, hands-on and conceptually rich activities for learners during the PEP Academy lessons. This is supported by learner workbooks and
resources that are being provided to our almost 4500 learners registered this year. The first CASME training session of the year was hosted by our PEP Academy team in Tembisa, Gauteng. The first term sessions focus on developing a deep number sense through games, puzzles and problem-solving. Teachers left the session energised and excited to get to class and share the activities with their learners.

2019 Sales
Convention In November a very successful Sales Convention was held at Bela Bela to honour and motivate the Sales leaders. On day one, the leaders were brought up-to-date with what’s happening in PEP and inspired by Chief Executive Officer Jaap Hamman, Chief Executive Sales Wynand Möller and Pepkor Chief Executive Officer Leon Lourens before a prestigious gala event where many a Dynamo were rewarded for their hard work.
The next day kicked off with the customary big walk before the walk-in parade that once again sent chills down spines as it showed how alive and well our culture really is. Wynand Möller gave an inspirational talk on how you can conquer anything you put your mind to, as he took Dynamos through his gruelling Namib Desert Race. Dr Morné Mostert gave a talk on the future of work and Daniel Silke tracked the future before Krijay Govender had the crowd in stitches. A fantastic Telkom Mexican party ended the convention on a high note. All the leaders left inspired and ready for the busy period ahead as yet another successful conference drew to a close.

2019 regional conventions
Last year’s 17 regional conventions once again showed us why PEP is tops. The plays by Store Managers showed that PEP’s culture, Sikhula KunYe, is still very much alive and growing stronger every day. At the gala event, Store Managers proudly received their trophies and certificates on behalf of their teams. Dynamos were also rewarded with Sikhula KunYe and Long Service awards. The conventions focused on PEP as a chain of strength that is continuously evolving! Wynand Mӧller encouraged the Dynamos to all work and grow together. Jaap thanked the Dynamos for all their hard work and reminded them about our WHY. Motivational speaker Vumi left Dynamos feeling inspired and ready for the Black Friday, Christmas and Back-toSchool promotions that lay ahead.

Dynamos who inspire us:
Simone Pedro
Simone started her career at PEP in 2006 as a Training and Development Practitioner at Central Office. In 2014 she moved over to the field as Regional People Support Manager (RPSM). She spent two years in Durban as RPSM before returning to Cape Town.
In 2017 she took up the role of People Support Manager for the Distribution Centres and then came full circle by returning to the Training and Development department in 2018 as the Skills Development Manager. She says, “My PEP journey has been incredible thus far, pushing me out of my comfort zones and helping me grow professionally and as a person... And for that, I am immensely grateful.” Simone’s leader, Training and Development Manager Dup du Plessis says, “Simone is absolutely loyal and an ambassador for PEP’s purpose and Sikhula KunYe. She has high ethical and moral values. She is very passionate in helping others to grow – especially those who didn’t have the opportunity in the past.“ Where are you from? Kraaifontein in the Western Cape. How do you define happiness? Being content in your own skin and at peace with every decision you make. It took lots of introspection and lessons to get to this realisation. When and where were you at your happiest? When I am surrounded by my loved ones… It’s the little things in life that I find the most gratitude in. What do you enjoy spending your time on? My favourite novels, rugby season, being at the beach, exploring Cape Town and finding hidden gems... What are your biggest indulgences? Deon Meyer and James Patterson novels... And shoes! (I can be such a girly girl at times).
ABOVE: Simone and her fiancé, Carlo.
Why is PEP special for you? From the moment I set foot here, I felt at home. PEP has given me a space to grow and supported my growth. The true essence of PEP, Sikhula KunYe, when lived to its fullest, is what makes PEP truly special. Treating all Dynamos, and people at large, with equal dignity and respect, makes me feel like I belong and am valued. Any advice to your 16-year-old self? Work hard but don’t take life too seriously. Set goals, but not unrealistic standards. Don’t compare yourself to others – we each have our own journey. Don’t miss out on the adventures life has to offer. The best advice you ever got. Faith moves mountains. How do you manage stress? I need to shut down completely to reflect
“Work hard, but don’t take life too seriously.” and recharge – anywhere in nature is a great place to do that. Do you have anybody in your life that gives you unfiltered feedback? My closest girlfriends! “Behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women who have her back.” What are your biggest passions? My family and travelling. Where have you visited that you would like to return to? Amsterdam, Spain and Thailand! MARCH 2020

HIV and medication
To be honest, I often feel frustrated when I hear about the issues regarding the use of the medication – at this stage, it is the only way to survive longer with this virus. However, I often have to remind myself that life is rarely that easy or simple for everyone and I know that there is still a lot of discrimination and stigma regarding HIV. There are approximately 27 chronic conditions that require daily treatment and HIV is classified as a chronic condition. “A chronic condition is a human health condition or disease that is persistent or otherwise long-lasting in its effects or a disease that comes with time. The term chronic is often applied when the course of the disease lasts for more than three months.” Wikipedia With good healthcare and treatment, many people with HIV are living just as long as people who don’t have HIV. You can continue to have relationships, work or study, make plans and have a family – whatever you would have done before your HIV diagnosis. Effective treatment also means that most people living with HIV are achieving an undetectable viral load. This means that the virus exists in such small quantities in their blood that it does not affect their health and there is zero risk of transmitting the virus to others. But, remember that your viral load will go back up again if you stop taking your medication.
When I was first diagnosed in 1990, life was very different. At first, there was no medication and then in the late ’90s, the medications that came were awful, with around 20 tablets a day at very high strengths and side-effects. Times have changed and so has the treatments. I now take 1 tablet once a day! There really is no reason why you should not live a normal life! #HIVisNotaShame

FAST FACTS If you find out you have HIV, it is recommended that you start antiretroviral treatment as soon as possible. Taking treatment as prescribed by your doctor keeps you healthy and reduces your chances of passing HIV on to others. There are lots of different antiretroviral drug combinations. Your healthcare provider can advise you on your options. What is antiretroviral treatment? Antiretroviral treatment/medication (also sometimes referred to as ARV or ART) is the drug(s) that treat HIV. Many people living with HIV are taking treatment and stay healthy as a result. Current treatment for HIV is not a cure, but it can keep HIV under control very effectively. How does antiretroviral treatment work? ARV works by keeping the level of HIV in your body low (your viral load – the actual amount of virus in your body). This lets your immune system recover and stay strong. Keeping your viral load low also helps you to prevent HIV being passed on. From Avert.org and AidsInfo.org.

Dynamos who live the culture
Maria Boneparte Tell us about your career in PEP up to now. I joined PEP in 1989 as a casual worker. In 1990 I was permanently appointed at 4235 Grahamstown as a 2ic. After 17 years, I got promoted in 2007 as a store manager at 118 Grahamstown. Five years later I was transferred to a new store 6446 that opened in Grahamstown.
What has been your biggest success so far? Becoming a store trainer and sharing my knowledge with fellow Dynamos. What are some of the biggest challenges in your job? Empowering my team and trainees in such a way that they can become future leaders of PEP.
Words of advice to Dynamos on career planning? Dynamos do not procrastinate. Chase your dreams and make it a reality as time is not on our side. What do you do in your spare time? I like spending time with family and relaxing with a good movie.
What makes you excited about PEP? Helping Dynamos to grow so that they can reach their full potential.
Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know. I’m a good-hearted person and like to put others' needs before mine.
Who are your role models in life and especially in PEP? My life role model is my mom. In PEP it is my Area Manager, Franci Nel.
What is your favourite food and drink? A home-cooked meal with veggies and a glass of Stoney ginger beer. What is your motto in life? If you want something in life, don’t procrastinate. Go for it, because time is a valuable asset.
If you want something in life, don’t procrastinate. Go for it, because time is a valuable asset.
