Metrorail has been analysing the feedback received on social media. Here are the most popular issues that commuters have reported.
WE ARE
LISTENING! MYLINE HAS HAD A
FACELIFT!
@CapeTownTrains All the seats on coa ch 13045 this morning look like this. – @yummie_ammi e
Eita - check out the new MyLine! It’s smaller, has more information and is still free. For those of you who are looking for an internship, have a look at page 5 for some tips.
Vandalism Cable theft, faulty doors, damaged windows and seats are reported the most. With regard to cable theft, Metrorail’s bike squad has had success on the Northern Line, where they have nabbed four suspects. Metrorail has 1 000 contracted security officers, 459 permanent protection-services staff and 273 emergency security personnel to ensure its assets and commuters are safe. We also have strong partnerships with the South African Police Services’ railway unit.
I see my fellow commuters have been reporting issues to Metrorail, which is great. If commuters don’t talk, nothing will happen, so I’m glad they’re speaking up. See this page for the common commuter issues we’ve addressed. Let’s make a change together. @CapeTownTrains morning T9017 to Bellville from Cape Town via Lavis has carriages that don’t have windows. – @NjUhuruMapapu
Notices Announcements are mostly made electronically. “When there are changes, the system automatically filters them through to the electronic notice boards on the stations,” explains Johan Kriel (Operations Control Centre Manager: Metrorail Western Cape). The current system only allows announcements to be made at 16 stations at any given time. We encourage commuters to inform us the minute they experience problems.

Delays These can be extremely frustrating for commuters. The most common reasons are ageing rolling stock as well as railway-track failures. New carriages are currently being built to replace Metrorail’s ageing rolling stock. The 3 600 carriages will be ready between 2015 and 2025. Metrorail also has 19 dedicated technical teams who are experts in rail maintenance. During peak hours, mobile technical-response teams are posted in areas to respond to incidents immediately. In extreme circumstances, Metrorail arranges alternate transport. Buses will fetch commuters and take them to the next station.

POWER PLAY Metrorail is a priority electricity user. The services are critical to the country and therefore will only be affected under extreme circumstances. Metrorail Western Cape gets its power from two sources: Eskom for the operation of trains and the City of Cape Town to run stations, specifically on the line from False Bay to Simon’s Town. If Eskom indicates that there will be unavoidable power outages, Metrorail will communicate timeously with its customers. Contingency plans are in place and include the use of portable ticket machines and local station announcements with loudhailers. If the signalling system is compromised, trains will continue to operate following the manual procedure.

RECIPE
HOME-MADE
SHERBET Makes 500ml Ingredients • 500ml icing sugar • 10ml tartaric acid • 10ml bicarbonate of soda • 10ml jelly powder (flavour of your choice)
Method • Mix all the ingredients together. Taste and adapt as necessary. To make it more sour, add extra tartaric acid. Increase the icing sugar quantity if you want to make it sweeter. If you want a finer powder, sift the ingredients after they have been mixed. • Spoon the mixture into small packets, insert a drinking straw and tape the bag closed around the straw. You can also seal the bag and attach the straw to the outside.

PROFILE
MINUTES
WITH
Meet 25-year-old Dalin Oliver, a Good Hope FM sports presenter, comedian and cricketer. How long have you been playing cricket for?
DO combine neon with neutrals such as beige and white to tone down your look. DO try a funky pedicure or neon French manicure. Simply substitute the white tip for a splash of lime. DO wear neon clothing to the beach or nights out with friends. DO go for one neon
item at a time for a pop of colour. Start small by using accessories.
DON’T choose a colour that won’t work with your skin tone and hair. Neon yellow doesn’t look good on a pale skin tone, for instance. Try bright pink or blue instead. DON’T wear head-to-toe neon to work, interviews or formal affairs. It’s best left to dress-up parties!
Since I was eight years old. I played my first mini cricket game for St Anthony’s Primary in 1997. I then joined St Augustine’s Cricket Club, where I’m currently in their first team.
Batsman or bowler? I’m a number-five batsman. I bowl at a medium pace as well.
Which local team do you support? I’m a huge Cape Cobras supporter. Paul Adams is doing an amazing job as coach, especially considering he gives the young players a chance.
Is there support for our teams? No – Newlands and Boland Park are hardly ever sold out for 20/20 or 50-over Cobras games.
In the four-day competitions, the players would be lucky if 100 spectators are there. The same goes for the Proteas: the stadiums are hardly ever at full capacity. It’s rather sad.
Who’s your favourite cricketer? It’s tough to have only one. I have six: Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and JP Duminy from the Proteas, and Richard Levi, Yaseen Vallie and Dane Piedt from the Cobras.
What are your other hobbies? I’m passionate about my stand-up comedy. I have been privileged to open for Barry Hilton, Riaad Moosa and Stuart Taylor. I’m also taking my debut one-man show to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July, directed by Stuart. It revolves around my opting to pursue a career as a comedian.
