Markets have existed since the dawn of civilization when people had surplus food to barter with neighbors. Raw produce and other agricultural products are available at most food markets, so a stand that can accommodate these basic characteristics should serve as the basic model, and modified for other types of merchandise. The design of this Produce Stand calls for the long sides of the shipping container to be cut lengthwise at waist-height to create awnings. Plywood cabinets are inserted inside to create storage and display of fruits, vegetables, or other foodstuffs. All components can be rolled, folded, or moved inside the weather-tight container when not in use.

the function
Not Just A Container The key design features of the Produce Stand include: flexibility, compactability and usability. The Stand is identical on both sides of the container, allowing one or both sides to be open depending on the intended use or site situation. One awning and counter-top can be retracted but still allow for the other to be used. This allows for flexibility for different market conditions, personal preference, or types of products displayed. All of the Stand components slide, fold and fit inside of the 20’ container allowing for efficient storage and security at night, or for transport. The awnings are secured from the inside, with the existing door providing the entry.

Lastly, the design allows for a number of vendor uses, including fruits and vegetables, small plants, herbs/spices, coffee/teas, smoothies/drinks, small arts and crafts, bakery and much more.

This ‘exploded’ axonometric drawing shows how the Produce Stand would be constructed. The materials consist of the existing steel container, plywood and off-the-shelf hardware. The components will be relatively inexpensive and could likely be done within the $3,000 budget. The cabinets could be customized for individual vendors and special painting, decorating and lighting all add up for a unique and personalized design.
