COMPANY PROFILE

cc-tapis® was created in 2011 by the traditional Persian house Maison Chamszadeh, founded in 1943 and well known in France for the quality of its handknotted rugs. The main headquarters are now in Milan, where a team of designers innovate through a new approach to traditional methods. Undyed raw materials, innovative weaving patterns and techniques are a key part of the process. All cc-tapis® rugs are completely handknotted by expert Tibetan artisans in Nepal. A strong respect for materials and for the culture of this ancient craft is reflected in the company’s eco-friendly approach to every step of production, ranging from the hand spinning of the softest Himalayan wool to the use of purified rainwater for the washing of the final products, making each one of cc-tapis® rugs unique. No chemicals, acids or artificial fibres are ever used in the process. Far from mass production, cc-tapis® aims to offer a tailored service to those who understand and enjoy a high-end product, where a three month production time contains a story of ageless culture.

ZO and CHIPO designed by Zaven

The ZO and CHIPO rugs were inspired by traditional African masks. The Zo is the one that carries the mask. A master that creates a connection and a bond with the spirit within it. All the elements and the colors typical of these artifacts are represented in a stylized and geometric way, becoming a symbolic representation.

AFTER PARTY designed by Garth Roberts

The subtle and abstract nature of the design is the result of Garth Roberts’ research and experimentation. Exploring contemporary and traditional graphics and texture, the haphazard nature of the design was inspired by the world of celebration, confetti and life’s fleeting moments. Creating a subtle and abstract graphic where the apparent randomness of the design has been translated by Tibetan artisans with over 152 000 individual knots per square meter. A randomness which has been custommade and born through experimentation.

Garth roberts founded his studio in 2010 a er a series of pop-up studio projects in collaboration with Universities in Milan, Berlin, and New York. Before his atelier, he gained experience as part of prestigious design teams in both North America and Europe. Since summer 2009 he has been based in Berlin, Germany but contin- ues working relations between Milan, Berlin, and New York. The studio works in different fields of product design and creative direction. Developing projects for clients such as Glas Italia, Kalmar Werkstätten, Mabeo Furniture, Serralunga, Casamania, the LRRH_ Art Project and others in a wide range of venues from high-end furniture to contemporary art.

LANOLIN WALL HANGINGS designed by Daniele Lora

Lanolin is a series of wallhangings that explore the beauty and purity of raw materials, expressing themselves, their textures, their tactility and their warmth. An anthropomorphic primordial creature that releases the tension of the loom through it’s long relaxed fringes, reacting to and enriching the space it inhabits.

LE(S)S and LA(C)K designed by Christophe Delcourt

Christophe Delcourt e cc-tapis: Christophe Delcourt and cc-tapis: The common taste to explore new territories. Over the years and collaborations, his research has become focused on materials. As a result the work of Christophe Delcourt is now mature and perfectly identifiable, he has been offered the possibility to move towards an expertise that is always more developed and precise, as in his recent collaboration with cc-tapis. “The thing that seduced me about cc-tapis, is their approach to materials and color. The opportunity to work with natural materials, whose nature is intrinsically uncertain. For example, with artisanal production techniques, color is not always absorbed into the fibers the same way. This renders every piece original and it is for this reason that I wanted to work with uniform colors and not with motifs. I wanted to, in one way or another, accompany this natural variation in dying to the point it disappears. The result of this observation is a series of rugs that interprets, every one is it’s own way, the perfect illusion between a precious material - pure silk - in another more raw material - wool.”

At the end of 1990, the name Christophe Delcourt appeared for the first time in the French design scene. A presence that was justifiably noted as he was completely self-taught and he not only designed his first objects, but constructed and edited them as well. Production quickly became supervised but this entry into the design-world already demonstrates the characteristics of a designer who is not like all the rest. From this his first furniture pieces were born. “It was through a decisive encounter with a blacksmith and his carpenter brother” remembers Delcourt. “Through contact with them, I discovered assembling techniques, the way in which precision during production enriches the piece. There was something extremely important in the bond between the purity of intentions and the quality of the perception of the piece.” Tables, chairs and lamps quickly draw the outlines of a universe which is precise and honest at the same time. Wood and steel connect objects whose simple exteriors cover the perfect acknowledgment of artisanal workmanship. It is in this perfect equilibrium between the purity of design, the beauty of the material and the extreme care of the production where the style of Christophe Delcourt finds it’s full expression. Designer-editor, a path which seems to have already been mapped. From the beginning Christophe wanted to confront himself with new skills and challenges. Bit by bit he began collaborating with small and large French and International editors such as: Roche Bobois, Tectona, Baxter, HC 28, Van Rossum, o and more recently with cc-tapis. “One of the reasons I like to work with other editors is because I love to explore new territories and especially not to repeat what I already know. I am convinced, as a designer, my mission is to express a sincere point of view in relation to an existing method of production, to study technical solutions, new material samples, colors etc. whether production be artisanal or industrial, because, contrary to popular belief, I think that industrialisation doesn’t have to be a synonym for simplification. Christophe Delcourt is a designer deeply involved in his work, but also a craftsman who is constantly trying to go beyond conventions and continue to move forward. “In general, there are materials that I have never thought to work with and products that I never imagined that I would design one day, but the more that I go ahead in this sector, the more interest I have in these meetings and the exchanges that open a field of infinite possibilities.”

STITCH designed by Chiara Andreatti

A project born from a manual approach where spools, needles, thread and sewing machines play the protagonist. The first mock-ups were created with a sewing machine on paper and from there the conditions were right to create an entire collection that speaks the same language. “It was a real challenge and a new approach even for the weavers themselves” recalls Andreatti . It is a completely new technique and an extremely manual process where the “stitching” pattern is created by hand after the rug has been woven. Each “stitch” is added or sewn manually by the weavers into the rug and becomes a graphic that recalls traditional nomadic drawings on a much larger scale. A collection identified by “lightness” and “delicacy” in both the line and color.

Born in Veneto not far from Venice Chiara Andreatti moved to Milan where she graduated in Industrial Design at IED in 2003 and attended a master at Domus Academy. She collaborated in design studios such as Raffaella Mangiarotti, Renato Montagner and since 2006, she has worked with studio Lissoni Associati(MI), whilst at the same time, following parallel freelance projects and working with companies like Atipico, Glas Italia, Non Sans Raison, cc-tapis, Covo, Reflex, Casamilano and Armani Jeans. With a continuous research for aesthetics she often combines the artisan culture of her venetian roots with the design and industrial needs believing that an handcrafted and poetic touch on everyday objects will enrich our life.
