Worked a part time summer internship at Teldon for the second year in a row, as a part of their design team. At Teldon worked on 2016 and 2017 Calendars. Entered third year of university, taking the COMD program major.

RELATIONSHIPS Since childhood I have always been a quiet person, never publicly outspoken, preferring to become more vocal on the individual level and after becoming acquainted with people. Even my mother said that on the first day of kindergarten, I observed first, and then made a decision who to approach and play with. Generally I find having a few very close friends the most comfortable, and having a good general relationships with those I see on the daily basis. I’ve found that surrounding myself with dedicated individuals has been the best way to succeed and create strong relationships. My best friends from high school were smarter and helped drive myself to raise the bar and compete

along side of them. My three best friends in particular, have been amazing since we all graduated. We are all dedicated to our university studies, and when we have the opportunity to see each other we simply pick off from the last time. My relationship with my sister and brother is great, we rely on each other and always support one other. They are probably my best comrades. My first year of university I met Jaylen, and we have been together for two years now. Being in the same program has only strengthened our relationship, as we enjoy competing and also benefit from having each others honest opinions and suggestions. 2015 has really shown me how important my siblings are to me.

EXPERIENCE Throughout elementary and high school I was generally pretty good at most subjects, but never the best at any single one. Going into highschool I had pretty high grades, as though I may not be the smartest, I do know how to get a good grade. The arts program was very much ignored and unappreciated, as is often the case. The teachers often bought the supplies with their own money, and half our class was sectioned off from growing mold caused from the biology class above, left to be dealt with in the coming years. I enjoyed art class, but there was no competition and the assignments repeated. While I enjoyed art, it was never something I felt was something I could pursue fully. The Information Technology class I took introduced Adobe Photoshop and from there I began developing my computer skills, in particular using Apple computers, as previously I had exclusively been brought up using PC. I learned introductory skills to photo editing as well as basic html coding, basic flash, and a few other programs. I was introduced to inDesign in grade 12 while working on the school yearbook.

First year at ECU I took the visual arts core in second semester, and really enjoyed learning about the traditional art practices. Much of the basics I was never introduced to in high school, and in particular refined my skill with drawing in live studio classes working with models. During foundation year at ECU, I also took the Digital Imaging Essentials course with David Bergman, where I brushed up on Photoshop skills and really developed a love for Illustrator becoming proficient at using the pen tool and manipulating points. Vector artwork I find to be incredibly rewarding while still being challenging at times. From second year at ECU I developed further my skills in inDesign, learning how to typeset properly and apply these skills to practical projects like creating magazine layouts and learning the anatomy of typefaces. The summers of 2014 and 2015 was spent working part time as a intern at Teldon, a calendar design company, where I worked with the design team. Here was great use applying inDesign and Photoshop skills for tangible products that would be manufactured and sold.

AMBITIONS My childhood dreams were quite simple. Have a family, and a cat or two. One of my favourite things to do was to read, and so for a couple years I thought being a librarian would be the job for me. I also thought that being a teacher would be fun, inspired by the character, Miss Honey, from the movie Matilda. As I grew older I realized that a librarian wouldn’t be a very exciting dream job. Later I came to imagine a life as a marine biologist, which seemed much more exciting.

I took an Information Technology course by chance, in grade 10, and I was introduced to Adobe Photoshop. Here is where I was first introduced into the design world, and my interest sort of slowly grew from there. The courses in design were dismal at my high school but I still knew this was what I needed to pursue after graduation. Every opportunity that related I took, including working on the yearbook for my last year. I also took traditional art classes to build those skills.

As I went through high school, though I was good at math and sciences, it was never a strong suit, achieving decent marks but nothing remarkable. For a period I thought that becoming a wild cat conservationist would be incredible, as I have always loved cats.

Now my ambitions are to potentially further my education, after completion of the COMD undergrad, and pursue a masters degree. I’d love traveling to study in another country, to not only see more of the world, but to study within a different environment and style.

RECREATION Since childhood, reading has been my favourite hobby. It is the best escape personally, and a way to experience be captivated by the story and its setting. Growing up I had a few other recreations I enjoyed, I played soccer from age 7 till 15. Girl guides was a large part of my life, from being a Spark at age 5 till 14, as my last year was as a pathfinder. From Girl Guides I have always loved camping, and going on trips with friends. The best part was always being around the campfire, and listening to the rain from inside the tent at night. As time went by I developed a great interest in baking, finding the process relaxing and enjoyable. From there I discovered how much more I liked the decorating process, from building a layered cake to icing and decorating with icing flowers and lettering.

Over the years my appreciation has grown for more unconventional sports, in particular I enjoy watching Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, and dancing. I find the subtle and often understated power and athleticism incredible as it is intertwined with grace. Other hobbies I enjoy from time to time are DIY projects, finding inspiration often from Pinterest. As of 2015, a lot of my free time has been spent working on personal design to build my portfolio, and develop skills not taught in COMD. During August, free time was spent learning about Adobe Muse, to learn the skills and utilize this knowledge to create an updated portfolio website.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS There are some distinctly memorable projects from school and life that have led up to where I am now. 2011 was a particularly good year for art class projects. A favourite was a two part project, firstly drawing a portrait, taking this and blowing it up large scale. Taking this blown up print, we had 1 hour to paint over it with unconventional colours, and honestly seeing the collection of the classes work was amazing. Placing a time constraint on painting produces great energy and adds intensity.

From foundation year at ECU (2014), the most memorable project would definitely go to the chocolate mold assignment. For this we needed to create our own mold and then work with chocolate, pouring and extracting the pieces carefully. I choose to create monarch butterflies. They were incredibly thin, and thus breakable; also the colour was vital and so for this I painted edible candy to mimic the butterfly. An incredibly difficult project but also the most engaging, fun, and unique.

Another memorable project would have to be working on the 2013 yearbook for my last year of high school. Not only did I learn as I went working with Adobe InDesign, but it was my first experience working with layouts, and also working on a team which was challenging but also very rewarding.

Second year at ECU, I enjoyed three projects in particular. One being a type-setting project for Typography, involving creating the layout for a magazine. Also a group project creating a mini exhibition on a typeface (Akzidenz-Grotesk) to inform non-designers about typographic knowledge.

20 This year of 2015 has been an exciting and important year, as the focus has been primarily upon school and improving skills surrounding the design world. Looking at the breakdown of time spent, a good portion has been dedicated to not only attending classes at ECU but also at working at home on assignment and personal projects. Additionally working part time at the restaurant throughout the year, has kept the work

15 flow being completed at a timely manner and ensuring good time management between school, work and life. The most memorable moment definitely has to be the time I spent in Japan with my boyfriend and his family over Christmas. The culture and architecture is so incredible and different from what I’ve ever experienced, it was amazing. Traveling to other places is always such a highlight and adventure.
