TYPEFACE PAIRINGS

start with a mood Typefaces have personality, and they create the mood and feel for any design.

MOOD HAPPY | LIGHT | NEUTRAL | SERIOUS

Typefaces have and display personality, and so it’s important to consider what the mood of your design should be. Essentially think about the emotion you want your reader to have and see when looking at the work. If your design is for a children’s book, it might be happy and cheerful. If your design is for a newspaper, maybe it should be neutral. A science-fiction novel might be quite serious and intense. If you want a website to be friendly, maybe you design for a light mood that is open and welcoming. Whatever your project may be, always consider what kind of mood you want to create, and let that inform your type choices.

DESIGN STYLE BRIGHT & BOLD | INFORMAL | MINIMAL | CORPORATE | OFFICIAL

Now that you have established what your mood is, consider what type of design style you will be going for. If you have determined that the mood will be happy, maybe your design style will be really bright and bold, or perhaps a little bit more casual and informal. Say you have the mood to be light, the design style could be informal and relaxed, or it could quite minimal and simplistic. Neutral? Well then the design style might be a bit business and corporate like. Or if you had a serious mood maybe the design should very official and formal. Let the mood inform the design style, which will help inform the type.

FORMAT PRINT | DIGITAL

Knowing what format your design will be used for is an important aspect to consider for every project. Some typefaces work better printed, while others are designed specifically for the screen. Once you know what format you will be working on, then you can consider what typeface to use. If you're working with print, is it a book, magazine, poster, newspaper, sign, etc. If it’s for digital, is it a website, an app, a advertisement, a blog, a game, etc. Knowing your format is essential as it could potentially contain some limitations for type choice.

consider type use How will your type be used for various aspects of your design.

TYPE USE HEADING | BODY COPY | CAPTION | CONTENT

Lastly before you get started, think about how and what your typeface will be used for. How much content will you be working with. For example will it be large bodies of text like for a novel, or to caption images, or is it more for headlines in a magazine or newspaper, etc. Some typefaces have huge families with all the weights you could ever ask for, that covers all type treatment. But other typefaces have limited weights and might not be so versatile across the board. Additionally not all typefaces are great for large use but instead are very readable for long chunks of text, and vice versa.

AVENIR GEOMETRIC SANS | ADRIAN FRUTIGER | 1988 Avenir was designed by the famous Swiss type designer, Adrian Frutiger in 1988. It was designed based upon the sans serif typefaces Futura and Erbar, and named Avenir which means “future” in French. Designed and released roughly sixty years after Futura, Frutiger was able to build upon the experience and development of new technology from the twentieth century. While still a geometric sans, Avenir is not purely geometric like Futura, in order to avoid the inherent legibility issues caused by perfect geometry. Instead it is a ever so slightly more organic and humanistic interpretation of geometric types, which is what makes it more legible when set in smaller point sizes. KEY FEATURES Minimal contrast with a moderate x-height. Vertical stress. Round glyphs are circular. “Q” has a flat tail aligned to the baseline.

HOEFLER & CO

WHITNEY GOTHIC/HUMANIST SANS | TOBIAS FRERE-JONES | 2004

Whitney was originally designed by Tobias Frere-Jones for New York’s Whitney Museum, which needed a typeface for both editorial typography and public signage. It would need to be used for catalogs and brochures, enabling extended reading in potentially crowded spaces, while still providing good energy. Whitney has compact forms with a broad x-height and open forms to provide good legibility in many circumstances. KEY FEATURES

Minimal contrast with a high x-height. Vertical stress. Stroke endings point outward. Compact proportions.

ADOBE

KEPLER CONTEMPORARY SERIF | ROBERT SLIMBACH | 1996

Adobe Kepler is a post-modernist type that combines neo-classical contrast with renaissance frames. Kepler was created by Adobe type designer Robert Slimbach, and influenced by the tradition of classic modern 18th century type design. Kepler displays a modern style in a humanist approach, being quite elegant and calligraphic. Slimbach designed Kepler to have an extensive family with an enormous range of weights, including four optical size variations for use at specific point sizes. With the hint of Oldstyle proportion Kepler is a versatile and dynamic type, with good energy and warmth. KEY FEATURES

Moderate contrast with a moderate x-height. Slightly angled stress. Transitional tapered serifs.

ADOBE

GAR A MOND pro

OLD STYLE SERIF | ROBERT SLIMBACH | 1989

An Adobe Original, Adobe Garamond Pro is a contemporary typeface based upon the roman types of Claude Garamond, and the italic types of Robert Granjon. Claude Garamond, a 16th century type designer, is renown for his roman types and their balance of elegance and practicality. The italic weights are based off of Robert Granjon’s italics, which had a sloped and energetic feel, while still being practical as well as dynamic. Adobe Garamond was Adobe’s first historical revival, released in 1989 as a digital interpretation, which utilized the advantage of technology for contemporary type. Adobe Garamond Pro is a very versatile type, attractive and graceful for print specifically, and is more eco friendly as the letter forms use less ink than most. KEY FEATURES

Moderate contrast with a low x-height. Angled stress. Open bowls. Counters and eyes are small.

HELVETICA NE0-GROTESQUE SANS | MAX MIEDINGER | 1957 Helvetica is one of the most ubiquitous typefaces around the world. It is an efficient typeface with clean, no-nonsense forms. It was designed by Max Miedinger in 1957 for the Haas’sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas Type Foundry) in Switzerland, and initially released as Neue Haas Grotesk. Helvetica embodies the objective and functional style associated with the International Typographic style from the 1950’s and 1960’s. The purpose of Helvetica was to create a neutral type with great clarity, and free of any intrinsic meaning in order for an ability to be used for all types of communication. KEY FEATURES Low contrast with moderate x-height. Vertical stress. Very small, closed apertures. Leg of “R” features a gentle curve.

LYON COMMERCIAL TYPE

CONTEMPORARY SERIF | KAI BERNAU | 2009 Lyon is a contemporary interpretation designed by Kai Bernau after Robert Granjon’s (master of the Renaissance) seminal serif typefaces of the 16th century. Bernau’s Lyon is intended and created for books and publications, with two different regular weights to provide a lighter, quieter feel or a noticeably darker assertive look and colour. Lyon's look is elegant and intelligent with a relatively anonymous presence, making it a useful typeface for magazines, books, and newspapers. It also reads nicely on-screen and has become a popular typeface for digital magazines. KEY FEATURES Medium contrast with a high x-height. Angled stress. Old Style serifs. Narrow space saving forms.

TRADE GOTHIC GOTHIC SANS | JACKSON BURKE | 1948-1960

Trade Gothic was first cut and designed in 1948 by Jackson Burke, and which he continued to develop further weights and styles until 1960. It was designed for newspaper work, in particular headlines and classified sections, as Trade Gothic offers space saving condensed and efficient forms. As one of the earlier Gothic sans, Trade Gothic is more irregular than those that would follow, as it has unexpected features leaving it with more character and a slightly more natural appeal. KEY FEATURES

Minimal contrast with a large x-height. Vertical stress. The bowl of the “a” shelves very steeply. “Q” has curved tail crossing the bowl and baseline.
