“NEXT University is a cutting-edge higher education learning institution located in Washington, DC. The administration of NEXT University has a vision to increase their reach into a large urban population to provide an alternative place for students of all ages to gather, connect, explore and engage in lifelong learning experiences. NEXT HUB will give students access to a premier education at many stages of one’s life; providing active and diverse educational experiences. It is about encouraging more meaningful faculty interactions, increasing student engagement and connections to other learners. The hope is for citizens to continue to grow and improve through all stages of life.”
Design Concept The design of the NEXT HUB was inspired by the physical location of the space, Washington, D.C. The space is designed to convey a connection to the city and its residents through finishes and graphic abstractions. The design concept is centered around the image of the D.C. street map. Upon looking at it, the viewer first sees all of the intricate intersections and grids created by the lines, but upon deeper inspection we can see that the city is not only made up of these lines and intesections, but also the spaces inbetween. The NEXT HUB represents one of these spaces between the lines. In this way it will become a contributing factor and presence to the entire city as well as its residents. The final design of the Hub honors this point of inspiration by carefully selecting and applying wall, furniture, and ceiling finishes to carry through the desired connection to space. The motif of the intersection street on the city map can be found in carpeting, graphics, and upholstery.

designing the
HUB
The Next HUB should reflect its users, their lifestyles , their goals, and their passions. The space should foster intellectual and personal growth that equips students and faculty with useful tools to contribute to the community and impact the world. The design of the HUB will promote these principles. Using the imagery of street maps of Washington DC, the spaces will connect to their location and will bring the spirit of the city and its residents to life through aesthetic and function.

INDIVIDUAL TO SOCIAL LEARNING “Learning should happen anywhere in the NEXT HUB, so the design team must understand the rhythm of learning throughout the class, the day, the term and the year. It’s important to create a range of settings that considers adjacencies, privacy needs and collaborative activities within the space allowing individuals and groups to determine how and where they best work. Therefore, the vision is to provide a balance of public and private spaces where students can work alone or with others, whether inside or outside the class. The spaces should transition to support social interactions, individual study, group collaboration, team project work, faculty interaction and community events.”

“Education is an ongoing, organic process that changes as the needs of the student and employers evolve. Flexibility is a key tool to ensure that the learning spaces adapt to a variety of teaching methods and student learning preferences. NEXT University believes in the interdependency of three key elements in the design of a successful learning environment: pedagogy, technology and space. The new spaces within NEXT HUB must adequately combine these three elements and be agile enough to support the diversity of content while integrating individual and classroom technology tools. These spaces should be agile and easily transition between different modes of learning such as whole group discussion, group breakouts, and traditional presentations and promote interaction with peers

RETAIL & RESIDENCE PROJECT Retail Space This space will be used for a boutique toystore that will create a comprehensive brand image. The storefront will feature two window displays that are to be designed on brand, and will bring customers into the store.
Design Statement To create an immersive and interactive environment in which customers feel as though they are a part of the game of Clue, achieved through the use of antique furniture and designs to recreate the board game mansion.
We are all familiar with the original “who done did it” game, and even more so, we are familiar with the Clue mansion. In designing the retail space, I aimed to recreate the experience of being in the mansion and helping to solve the murder mystery. I wanted to create as interactive and immersive an experience as possible. Shoppers should immediately feel like the y are taken back to a 1920’s dinner party. The retail fixtures are mixed among antique style furniture pieces as to effectively market merchandise as well as enhance the experience. To further recreate the mansion, the retail space is divided into the specific rooms of the house. The rooms include the lounge, billiard, dining room, and the ballroom . The study and the conservatory rooms are featured in the storefront window displays. The desired retail sold in the space will range from collectable board games to Clue themed party supplies to 1920’s costumes, creating a toystore that is fun and welcoming for all ages. Once customers enter through the front doors it is clear, it’s not just a game anymore.

Private Residence The private residence project is to be completed in tandem with the toystore space. The private apartment will be on the second floor of the building that houses the retail space and will be designed for the owner and manager of the store. The resident requested a space that is independent from the business, and that has its own character. The space will include a master bedroom and bath suite, a guest bedroom and bathroom, living space, dining area, and a full kitchen. The final design will encourage a healthy work-life balance for the owner where they can relax in their personal space while also being allowed quick and easy access to the downstairs space.

Holiday Services
holidays love,
Currently, Ivy & Leo do not offer any additional in-store services for customers. During most times of the year, such amenities may not be necessary, but during the holiday season we are all looking for a little something extra, and something to lessen our load as we are shopping for gifts. In an effort to help their customers save time, Ivy & Leo should offer a gift wrapping option at checkout. The wrapping will be resemble their

jackets, as well as skirts, blouses, and dresses. This event will showcase the versatility of the items in the Holiday 2019 collection with a winter-y Sip & Shop Event. There will be a refreshment bar in the back of the store with hot cocoa and mocktails for customers to sip as they browse the merchandise. This event will occur on a Saturday before Christmas, December 14, 2019. This event will begin around 2 pm and will last until the store closes at 9pm. From 2pm to 5pm the employees will be serving the hot cocoa, and then after 5 customers will also be offered a holiday themed mocktail.
