Music

One of the highlights in the De La Salle music department this year has been the strength from within the junior ranks. The Intermediate Band is incredibly strong with many students from the Year 7 Band Program graduating to Intermediate Band within the first six months of learning their band instrument. The introduction of the Primary Music club has taken off, with Grade 4 students meeting weekly at lunch time to play music and share performances. The ACC Music workshops, which take place at regular intervals through the year, cater for a wide range of musicians. They include sessions for Concert Band, Stage Band, Vocalists, Rock Band, Percussion and Strings. This year De La Salle musicians have been in excellent form, featuring as soloists and band players in each of these settings. In May, the Sacred Music Concert took place at Hamer Hall. This concert featured a gorgeous selection of sacred songs performed by 38 schools across the Melbourne Archdiocese. Simon Windley, our Music Captain featured as a soloist and our choir performed in the massed items. This year the Music tour was quite special. We ventured to Bairnsdale and performed at a range of local primary schools. Renowned Jazz musician Don Burrows performed in the workshop and featured in the evening concert with the combined Bairnsdale/ De La Salle band. Mr Burrows is a gracious man and gave a warm address to the audience at conclusion of the concert. Mr Burrows describes music as a powerful investment for parents. He went on to praise parents who pay for lessons, buy instruments, ensure rehearsals are attended and listen to their children play and develop — with varying degrees of success! Music spills out into so many areas of learning and life. It exercises the brain, the social connection and the spirit. As Mr Burrows said, it’s a powerful investment. Who can argue with that?
