A presentation to celebrate our 110th Anniversary
MALVERN
1912 – 2022 Proudly celebrating 110 years of Catholic, Lasallian education in Malvern
A message from the Principal Dear De La Salle Community, On 5th February 2022 the College celebrates 110 years since the very first day we opened our doors for the initial intake of 54 primary school students. The following pages provide a concise snapshot of our history with a view to convey some of the key decisions and developments over the past 110 years. De La Salle’s 110 years have demonstrated a commitment to our living heritage, ingrained by the three founding Brothers and continuously adapted to be responsive to today’s realities. Our obligation to the young men entrusted to our care remains providing a holistic education for life in contemporary society, an education which is engaging, rigorous and inspiring. This is shared in an environment where the inherent dignity of each young person is recognised and he feels valued, safe, encouraged and there’s always someone who believes in him. Inspired by Christian maxims and Gospel values, after 110 years De La Salle continues to create opportunities to live this practically for service, leadership and the betterment of others. I hope you enjoy this glimpse into 1912 – 2022 at Malvern. During the year a variety of initiatives are underway to acknowledge and celebrate our proud history, highlight our many achievements and promote the value and promise of a Catholic, Lasallian education for many years to come. Abide in my love – Prayer for a Lasallian community God of wisdom, You call us together as a community. Jesus tells us that wherever two or more gather together, He is with us. Let all of us here today, marking this special occasion of 110 years of our College, share with others the grace and love and justice that we receive from you. Your grace reaches out so we can reach out to each other and remain a Lasallian community. May we always continue to show care and unity for each other as members of our Lasallian family here at De La Salle College.
Prayer for a Lasallian Community And may we be reminded and inspired by the example and words of the Founder St John Baptist de La Salle: “Union in a community is a precious gem, which is why our Lord (Jesus) so often recommended it to his apostles…preserve it with care therefore, if you want your community to survive” [Med 91.2] Lord, we ask that you bless us and walk with us all the days of our lives.
Humble Beginnings • De La Salle College first opened its doors on February 5th, 1912 • The original “campus” was the current tramways hall / museum in Stanhope St West
A Pioneering Trio In 1911, the Vincentian Parish Priest at St Joseph's Malvern, Fr Simon Hegarty, built the school and enrolled the first students. At his invitation, three Irish Brothers – Br Jerome Foley (26 yo), Br Dunstan Drumm (32) & Leopold Loughran (34) founded the College, beginning classes the very next day after arriving from Ireland by ship. They brought few resources, but did bring a 200 year-old Lasallian tradition of running good schools. Central to this was – and remains 110 years later – a genuine respect for students and a program to suit the future needs of De La Salle’s young men.
Early Years • The College began with 54 students and had grown to 147 by July, 1912. • The first secondary classes were taught in 1918 • In 1929 the Bros community moved from the original Coldblo building in Stanhope St West to the newly renovated Manresa (right) where the College gym currently stands • 1930 saw the College open a boarding school at Tiverton (above right) on the corner of Stanhope and Isabella Streets

110 Years Legacy Extracts from Br David Hawke (Brother Visitor) letter to the College 31 Jan. 2022 Brothers Dunstan, Jerome and Leopold planted the Lasallian seed which has flourished now for well over a century. The three Brothers would not have dreamt of the College we see today educating young men over three campuses The college has a rich heritage and much to celebrate in its 110 years. Countless alumni have graduated making a significant contribution not only in Australia but across the globe. The College ……collaborating with a staff of Lasallian Partners continues to offer a quality Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition. Students daily live the Lasallian values of Faith, Service and Community. The college readily expresses through its service programmes its solidarity with others in need in the District and Pacific Asia region of the Institute.
110 Years Legacy • We all owe a debt of gratitude to the three founding brothers and the many visionary and spiritual De La Salle Brothers who served at Malvern since 1912 • As times changed, the contribution of Lasallian lay partners has had a profound and positive impact on the College • St John Baptist de La Salle’s fundamental themes remain at the core of all our operations. • The nature of our student – teacher relationships in a Lasallian school is pivotal and provides a point of difference • Holistic education at De La Salle is part of a bigger picture around character, citizenship, respect
Closing Prayer Loving God, bless us and guide us. Let us see your vision more clearly. Let us open ourselves to your love. Let us practice the virtues you have taught us. Let us always practice and live by our Lasallian Principles. And celebrate our differences by living in harmony with one another. Teach us to celebrate our 110 years by being gifts to our world. May our community here at De La Salle College continue to grow and prosper with zeal and justice and love. We make this prayer in in the name of Jesus, the true vine. Amen.
