Green your winter

Tips to enjoy the outdoors this winter See page 3

Letter from our Director of Education Dear Friends, Continuing our strong tradition of leading efforts to improve environmental quality and deliver excellent programming, Delaware Nature Society has set rigorous priorities for 2016. Water continues to be a central focus as it is critical to our environment, economy, wildlife, public health and food sources yet many of our waterways are polluted. We have identified clean water as a priority that unifies our education, advocacy and conservation work. Experiencing a canoe trip at DuPont Environmental Education Center, hiking along the Red Clay creek at Ashland Nature Center, eating farm fresh food at Coverdale Farm Preserve or fishing at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center are some of the many ways to support clean water. Programs such as Certified Wildlife Habitat, Stream Watch, and land protection provide opportunities for children, families and adults to deepen their understanding of the importance water has in their everyday life. Join us in taking action to improve our water quality through our Clean Water: Delaware’s Clear Choice campaign, an outreach effort to build public support for dedicated clean water funding. Look for the logo at right to participate in programs related to our campaign and receive a complementary water bottle at the program. On the following pages you will find opportunities to participate in a variety of programs at each of our sites. Please reach out to me at Helen@DelNature.org or 302.239.2334 x 114 or to other staff and let us know what programs and trip ideas you would like us to consider. Your input is essential to our success. As we head into the winter season I challenge you to join me and #Take5Outside! Cheers,

Helen Fischel Director of Education and Organizational Development

Enjoy the outdoors this winter! For over half a century, Delaware Nature Society has been a leader in conservation and nature education, inspiring generations of families to get involved and learn how they can become responsible stewards of the Earth and all its inhabitants. We encourage you to experience each season and take in its beauty. Even in winter, there is so much to explore outdoors. Take 5 outside and appreciate the natural world around you. Nature is good for everyone. Take a walk or hike, visit one of our sites, watch the sunset or the clouds, look for animal tracks, join a bird count, listen to the calls of Spring Peepers, or just get outside and play! Find your own way to explore and connect with nature. Most importantly, have fun!

We promise green will become your favorite color because at Delaware Nature Society, We’re Green. By Nature.

Outdoor activity can nourish children’s physical, social, and emotional development

Spending time in the open air and learning outside increases creativity and improves problem-solving skills

When Gourmet magazine was shuttered in 2009, no one was more stunned by this unexpected turn of events than its beloved editor in chief, Ruth Reichl. In her struggle to process the unthinkable and find a new direction, she turned to the one place that had always provided sanctuary: the kitchen. Discover the 136 recipes that represent her passion for food and helped her find joy.

Food 52 Genius Recipes with Michele Wales Thu, 4/7 Genius recipes surprise us and make us rethink the way #W16104CF we cook. They might involve an unexpectedly simple technique, debunk a kitchen myth, or apply a familiar ingredient in a new way. They’re handed down by luminaries of the food world and become their legacies. And, once we’ve folded them into our repertoires, they make us feel pretty genius too. In this collection are 100 of the smartest and most remarkable ones.
