Retirement Concerns

‘Becoming’ in Retirement For too many of us, retirement has been defined by what it’s NOT versus what it is. Many times, we no longer have full-time workloads or the same family responsibilities. Retirees, are in a new place of less pressure and hopefully far less stress nipping at our heels and weighing on our minds. This is also an incredible new time where you enter a new space of freedom to recreate yourself. This new season opens up the possibility of MUCH MORE instead of just MUCH LESS.

4 Summer 2022 LOVE LIVING HERETM

A

t the Delaware Retiree ConnectionTM, we define retirement as that stage of life when you have unlimited discretionary time, and you no longer exchange time for money. But for many people, it can be a confusing time, because your work may have defined you for so long. Perhaps you were tasked with focusing on your growing kids, and now they’re long gone and focusing on their own kids. Whether your profession or your family gave you identity, it can be daunting to step into retirement, a wide OPEN time and space. For others, they’ve day-dreamed of this stage as a time when they can do whatever they wish with plenty of time on their hands. They think of endless days of leisure and recreational activities. But as the Delaware Retiree Advisor, Len shares that many retirees find themselves either at a loss for a new identity or feeling empty with all of their free time. ‘Many in retirement who find ‘success’ in this new phase understand that it should be much more than just filling in their hours pursuing leisure. They come to understand that the possibility of their ‘personhood’ is right in front of them. In other words, they fulfill lifelong passions, or perhaps finding a new one.’

purposeful use. Maybe it’s a hobby, volunteer work, a new sport, joining a club, or even a part time job entirely different from your previous profession. The “Golden Years” are truly golden when retirees recognize their evolution towards becoming the person they truly are. And enjoying life while they’re at it. At the Delaware Retiree ConnectionTM, we’re excited to help unlock the amazing potential of this new season, connecting you to networks and resources that help you find ‘the new you’ that will flourish in this new stage. Len is one of our key consultants based on his strategic work to partner into people facing this stage. He shares one of the key points to keep in mind: ‘An essential element of retirement is analyzing priorities while being able to maintain financial stability. This requires a lot of planning, sure, but to do it properly, it is important to honestly evaluate your given situation. Planning is part of that equation.’ As you shift into retirement, your “becoming” is an opportunity to embrace. Take advantage of our resources and look for other chances to reflect. Dig into the community around you. Together let’s make these years golden!

‘Becoming’ is a process, a journey. Now that life has shifted from other responsibilities such as work and raising a family, there is an opportunity to finally put that time to

Retirement Concerns

Ready to RET I RE? How to Know You’re Ready There are several key 1 pieces to weigh as you consider when to 2 retire. Your response to each one will help 3 determine whether

so important. Do you find identity, enjoyment and ultimately purpose outside of your tasks for work? Life’s purpose is not integrated with work, but many of us have worked for so long and worked so hard we struggle to identify the important things we can do with our lives that are not related to our careers. Retirement preparation includes all these. It is important to consider if these six points are true of you before

you retire and actually work toward them as you are considering when to “unwind” your career. Beyond finances, what you are unwinding is the emotional connectedness to your work and meaning you find in it. Retirement is much more than simply “not working” and preparation for retirement is so much more than “financially not needing to work.” If these six points are true of you, then YES, you are ready to retire.

Freeman Arts Pavilion 2022: Continued Growth and Amenities

f you’ve had the opportunity to attend a concert at the former Freeman Stage, you’re in for an even better experience in the 2022 summer season! Whether it’s country music’s mega star, Clint Black, a soothing orchestra performance by the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, or a free, familyfriendly kid’s show by Jungle John, the Pavilion is sure to please everyone. And their constant improvements will make 2022 even better (no “pods” required anymore!). Reserved seating is now here, as well as the continuation of general admission on the spacious lawn. Bring your own chair or a blanket, and enjoy the setting under the stars. Other major improvements completed include wider aisles between reserved seating sections, widened pathways leading in and out of the venue (easier and faster to get to your car), and additional restrooms and concession areas. Grab a beverage, add a snack to share, and enjoy the outdoors! Eventually, according to the pavilion’s master plan, Freeman will be able to accommodate up to 4,400 attendees.

This Selbyville, DE arts venue is our premier destination for outdoor concerts, just a 40-minute drive from Rehoboth Beach and Lewes. Don’t want to drive and worry about traffic and parking? Try taking advantage of the pavilion’s partnership with Jolley Trolley’s shuttle service directly to the venue and back! The legacy of the Freeman family’s generosity at (and beyond) the pavilion

is evident. Their name is practically synonymous with philanthropy in the region. Their year-round Arts Access program provides children and families with educational programs focused on the performing and visual arts. School programs take place throughout the area, especially in schools with underserved children. There are also several performances offered to the public for free, including the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and the Delaware National Guard’s Army Band. There are also free activities and performances each week (usually at 10 am) for children. So if you’ve got visiting grandchildren, why not take them to Freeman Pavilion for entertainment and educational programming?

headliners, they also present concerts and other types of performances by local artists. There are theatrical performances, world-renowned and popular artists such as Patti LaBelle and Bonnie Raitt. And there are plenty of cover bands this year (such as tributes to ABBA, Fleetwood Mac and Queen), to name a few. And for Baby Boomers, there are throwback artists like Little River Band, Jackson Browne and KC and the Sunshine Band! Make a point to get to one or many performances. We are fortunate to have such a large outdoor venue here in southern Delaware!

time. Believe it or not, you can make great progress in 15 -30 minutes. Use the tips below to quickly clear space. Designate a basket or bin for mail and maintain it each week. Use a basket in a convenient area to hold your recent mail. Clear the container once a week to stay clutter free.

Weekdays can be hectic for many of us. If you are helping a parent clear clutter or tidying up your own home, this makes deep cleaning nearly impossible during the week. One way to make weekday decluttering less of a daunting task is taking things on a few minutes or an hour at a

Clear the counter of rarely used appliances. Appliances tend to take up large amounts of space. One way to quickly give any space a facelift is clearing the counters by removing appliances that are rarely used to remove clutter. Inventory and discard forgotten fresh produce, herbs and leftovers. Fresh produce, herbs, and leftovers have a limited shelf life. If you think your refrigerator is a bit cluttered, take a few minutes to get rid of forgotten produce and days old leftovers. Create donation containers in bedrooms to purge weekly. What feels better than finding ways to serve your community? If you have a surplus of useful gently used items have a donation box ready each week. You can extend this concept to the pantry if there are food items you are sure you won’t prepare. • Be realistic. Set attainable goals for yourself, and set a reasonable time for decluttering sessions based on your need. If you’re moving, you may be in more of a rush and need to get more

done in a shorter amount of time. If this is the case, Caring Transitions can help! •

Collect garbage & recyclables first. It can be surprisingly motivating to see how much clear space that alone creates. Focus on the task at hand; don’t get caught up in everything you need to do at once.

Use a checklist if you need!

Focus on progress, not perfection. Our belongings and spaces are always evolving and there is no “perfect” answer when it comes to decluttering. If you are happy with your progress, that is perfection.

Break it up. If you’ve got a lot of space to declutter, or a lot of things—or both— break it up into more manageable, bite size sections. For example, work through a large bookshelf one shelf at a time.

Be kind to yourself. Talk to yourself out loud. Give yourself encouragement as you would a friend.

Get support. Ask friends and family members to help and support you, even if it’s on the phone or a video call.

If you’re stressed about decluttering, Caring Transitions is here for you. We offer compassionate assistance with relocation, downsizing, and online auctions. Get in touch: SHimler@caringtransitions.com

Health, Wellness, Outdoors

Let’s Pickleball, a Crash Course Like learning to ride a bike, anything takes practice until it becomes a natural part of what you know how to do, no matter your age. Pickleball is no different. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport sweeping the country. There are now even monthslong delays on court shoes, certain paddles and gear. Although it can be played in any age group, seniors in particular are jumping into the sport in droves. For a few reasons. First, it’s a very social sport, and a great way to meet new people, especially if you are newly retired and relocated. Second, the courts are smaller than tennis courts; therefore, there is less distance to cover than tennis. This makes it achievable and less intimidating for many. Third, it is a sport that is safer for seniors, meaning fewer injuries. If you haven’t played Pickleball, but you have experience in tennis, table tennis or 18 Summer 2022 LOVE LIVING HERETM

badminton, this game should come pretty naturally. Even if you don’t have any experience with trying to hit anything with a tool attached to your hand, it’s all about the social factors, and most experienced players actually love to teach the game to invite newbies to join in. The network becomes so supportive that you will likely meet others at your level willing to have fun while learning the game. Together.

Here’s How it Works. Most games are mixed doubles, which makes it even more appealing to couples, but there can be other types of leagues based on gender or level. Unless it is a tournament, it’s ery friendly play with rules we respect. Described by many as a combination of tennis, badminton or Ping Pong, it’s a game that uses a paddle rather than a racquet, and although there are several quirky rules to learn, it’s pure fun to hit the pickleball back and forth.

The pickleball itself is like a wiffle ball – plastic with lots of round holes. It’s lightweight, making it easier to send across the net – another appeal to seniors. To demonstrate the game and learn pointers for every level, there are plenty of YouTube videos available. There are also televised, intense championships to watch. Many new developments (i.e., many retirement communities) are constructing Pickleball courts as part of their master plan…incentive for people who want their own, not public courts. Here in Sussex County, you can find courts from beach areas to the farmlands if you don’t live in a community that offers courts. Many are public, some are private like a club. Most courts are outside, but increasingly, there is a surge in indoor court play. Think sweltering Delaware heat at the height of summer, and non-playable courts during parts of the winter.

Here are some suggested southern Delaware public or clublike places you can look into. • Clayton Elementary School, Dagsboro – 10 courts managed by First State Pickleball Club • Lewes Canalfront Park public courts • Rehoboth Beach public courts • Georgetown public courts • Dave Marshall Fitness (indoor courts – also offer classes and league play) • Sea Colony, Bethany Beach (public/private, fees) • Factory Sports Complex, Lewes (indoor) • Sports at the Beach, Georgetown (fees, all levels, instruction, friendly play) • Check out numerous web resources by Googling “Pickleball in DE” • Playtime Scheduler – type in DE Beaches Area for a list of potential sites and potentially available games

The positives are strong and more than enough reason to check it out more. With 2,500 farm families in Delaware, you know it’s got to be fresh when you shop at our local farmers markets. From spring through fall, you’ll be confident your produce and products are going to be delicious. And local! Visiting these lively markets are a great way to support and celebrate our independent farms. Most are held

weekly and often feature other great, local vendors, but each has a unique personality. Grab your basket, and go on a local tour! The busiest is the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, a Saturday morning go-to for a sizeable and varied selection. With an army of friendly volunteers, and over 30 vendors, this popular market has an exciting atmosphere to draw you in. Bring extra (environmentally friendly) bags for all those extra goodies you’ll grab! (The market’s website shows their passion to connect you to local dairy and agriculture, so be sure to visit after your Saturday outing.)

At nearby Nassau Valley Farmers Market, summer Sunday afternoons have a special draw. Their vineyard features a scenic venue reminiscent of Sonoma Valley, right here in Delaware! Vendors offer produce and local pork products, natural remedies, and even a blade sharpening service. Soak in live music, browse the stalls, or wander into their wine store to enjoy local selections. Closer to the beach, foodies can peruse the Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market. Tuesdays you’ll find local poultry, pickled products, homemade dog biscuits, crab cakes and more, May through October, at this growing market in a parklike setting. Our tip, take your time deciding on those pastries from Old World Breads, and browse the stalls with a warm snack in hand. Just a few miles south, community-led Bethany Beach Farmers Market hosts its local farmers on Saturday mornings. Pick up gorgeous cut flowers and lavender products from Lavender Fields, perfect to bring the outdoors into your home. Or try fragrant local honey from Honey

Bee Apiary. Plan dinner with specialty mushrooms from Davidson Mushrooms and fragrant herbs from Herbs, Spice and Everything Nice. Don’t forget fresh peaches and blueberries from Magee Farms. Another favorite is Riverwalk Farmers Market in historic downtown Milford. Located on the scenic Mispillion Riverwalk, this market features plenty of tempting food, including locally produced cheeses and pairings from The Cheese Board, or mini desserts from Bites of Delight. There are also local artisans, selling sea glass jewelry and more. Live music keeps the crowd entertained. The best way to choose your market destination, confirm their hours and more can be found at Delaware’s Department of Agriculture. Antique Treasure Troves to Explore in Southern DE by Mary Jo Tarallo

“One person’s junk is another person’s treasure” – or so

the saying goes. Depending on your perspective, treasures (or junk) abound at more than a dozen antique shops scattered throughout Delaware. Four of them are clustered between Lewes and Milton. Each exudes it own personality in the state’s sphere of antique shops and most of the owners are as unique as the shops themselves. Driving south on Coastal Highway near Cave Neck Road, it is hard not to spot Heritage Antiques on the west side of the highway just below Hudson Field. Some may be slightly intimidated by the rather imposing brick and wrought iron facade but the brightly lit interior is filled

with welcoming cubicles stocked by individual vendors who rent spaces, typical of most antique shops still in business. Heritage’s owner – Susie Hudson - is a member of the well-established Hudson family and she keeps the showroom in tip-top condition. Want an old spinning wheel? How about some Fiesta Ware or a 1968 poster of Barbra Streisand with the Philadelphia Inquirer Rotocomics on the back? You will find all of this and more at Heritage. Just five miles west via Cave Neck Road, the town of Milton is home to The Mercantile, another 60 vender-shared space that once was a hardware store. It sits right smack in the heart of town across the street from the Milton Theater on Union Street. The Mercantile is more of a mix of old and new but the two-story layout offers plenty of room for a wide array of products and tastes from vintage collectables to furniture rehab supplies. Owner Lisa Salzarano, who hails from

mega-size version of exploring your grandmother’s attic. Coastal Crafts and Treasures has a completely different vibe. It is generously stocked with handcrafted works from locals as well as antiques and collectables. Peter Beaman says that he purchases the merchandise he and his wife Mary carry rather than display items on consignment or rent out space to vendors. Beaman’s may be a great place to start if you are in the market to buy or looking to part with some family “treasures”. New Jersey, has operated the business for about eight years. She had an antique shop in Montclair, NJ before relocating to Milton. Those who sprint along Rt 9 between Georgetown and Lewes might miss Cool Spring Village (CSV) on the north side of the road. Big mistake! CSV is more of a “campus” for three very different establishments – Beaman’s Old and Gnu Antiques, Coastal Crafts and Treasures and The Hen’s Den. Beaman’s has been in business for 40 years and claims to be the highest payer in the area for gold, silver, platinum, jewelry and coins. The jam-packed antique showroom features shelves and curio cabinets chock full of collections such as old bottles, porcelain statues and pressed glass. A visit is a

The third business at Cool Spring Village is a departure from any other antique establishment in the area. Owners Wes and Cadie Fagg say they take an eclectic approach to their operation and are delighted to bargain on prices with buyers. What sets The Hen’s Nest apart is the “animal zoo” behind the shop. Their collection of goats, pigs, miniature horses, roosters and ducks and a cow is available to the public and Cadie is what is called a farrier but that is a whole other story. All three owners agree that there are not nearly as many antique shops now as in the past but those that have survived are seeing a resurgence of interest from both locals and tourists. Why not make a day of it, and check it our for yourself. LOVE LIVING HERETM Summer 2022 25
