the embankments and preparing to brace the bridge and then bring in the heavy equipment to place the bridge since it will be a single span across the railroad.

“[The bridge] has to fully clear the railroad right of way, so we envisioned that being a relatively early phase and then from there they can pull the equipment out and build the trail down [from] the bridge onto that main park and work their way out,” says Johnson.

Although construction just started, Johnson says that they have run into a number of challenges in planning the park. In order to have the bridge cross the railroad, they have to comply with all the railroad coordination requirements and go through a review and permitting process, so ESA has been working on that since other parks within the district. Those features include the spray ground and the bouldering areas, which were elements that were highly requested from the community during the public outreach process.

“It will be exciting that BPRD can offer these recreational opportunities to the community in one of our parks, and with the park being 37 acres, the vast majority of it will be remaining natural,” says Isaacson. “Maintaining the sites’ natural characteristic was one of the key points we heard from the public, so we will have some accessible trails and paths going through the native trees and on top of the rock ridge. Once on top, you will also have some pretty spectacular views of the Cascade mountains to the west.” l

they started the design phase.

Another challenge has been the fact that since the city has been growing quickly in this area, the park doesn’t have electrical service to it yet. The nearest electrical service is about a mile away and on the other side of the railroad tracks. Because of this challenge, a selfcontained grid solar-powered system was designed which will operate all of the park’s electrical facilities. A natural gas generator was included in the design for power backup to recharge the batteries in the winter months, or when the demand is too high and exceeds the backup battery capability.

The park is currently planned to open in summer 2022 and it will be home to two elements not currently available in
