FASHION WEEK 2015
PAMELA QUINZI Presents “New York Wonderland,”
Featuring the Kilame Collection PAMELA QUINZI presented “New York Wonderland” this past Fashion Week 2015 in New York City. It was an artistic fashion event featuring the Kilame Collection on the Empire Hotel rooftop. “Every day in New York I feel like I’m living a great adventure; you never know what is going to happen or who you will meet and where you will end up… Running around, falling into the rabbit hole, looking for a Mad Hatter in a very whimsical world!” says Pamela. “My Alice is surrounded by shoes – art pieces that recreate her world and her adventures. She is having a tea time party, alone, with her shoes. She is a fashionista in New York who stole the Mad Hatter’s hat, and she can’t wait to meet the Queen of Hearts. She is not afraid… because she knows that…”We are all mad here!” For more information on PAMELA QUINZI, phone: 917 651 5484, email: pamelaquinzi@ kilame.com or melapafashion@gmail.com. JACKIE ROGERS
Presents her Spring 2016 Collection Couture designer JACKIE ROGERS, best-known for her bold designs and fabric selection, presented her Spring 2016 Collection this past fall at an exclusive location. Her new collection is an homage to the works of famed artist Salvador Dali, with whom she established a friendship when she lived in Paris. Jackie, who started as a menswear designer at the suggestion of Chanel, was inspired by Dali’s works. Rogers uses his artistic motifs and iconography in the collection, coupled with sumptuous fabrics, including gabardine, lamé and silk chiffon to create unique looks. In addition, the new collection expands on her burlap jacket, which she tailors to the body, creating beautifully structured, ornate dresses that turned the heads of many at the event. Guests viewed the collection inside a townhouse that was formerly the home of Elizabeth Taylor and Mike Todd, in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Glamorous models, whose hair and makeup were done by Dion Moore and Jose Rosello for Angelo David Salon, debuted 28 looks from her latest collection. Over the years, Jackie Rogers Couture Collections have been worn by the world’s most powerful women and men, utilizing materials that designers usually steer away from to create unique, timeless fashions. From blouses to pants, to beautiful gowns, each piece is handcrafted in her New York showroom to ensure the quality of each individual piece. Worn by socialites, celebrities and international jet setters alike, she has remained a top designer within womenswear. More recently, the Jackie Rogers brand has branched into more affordable t-shirts, utilizing jersey and organza to create beautiful designs that are also easy to care for and are enjoyed for years. INSTAGRAM : @pedrovirgil, TWITTER: @PEDROVIRGIL1
If you ask WENDY FITZWILLIAM how she defines beauty, she’ll tell you, “I don’t. I just know it when I see or when I experience it.” That “Je ne se quoi” is the exact quality the panel of judges experienced when they crowned Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Wendy Fitzwilliam, to reign as Miss Universe 1998. Beauty, talent, intelligence and determination. Determination being her most prevalent superpower. As the other pageant hopefuls faded behind the footlights, Fitzwilliam’s star was gathering momentum. After Miss Universe, she became an attorney, entrepreneur, recording artist, author, philanthropist, and full time mom. All roles which have led to her latest venture, Executive Producer and Host of Caribbean’s Next Top Model. TIMMAG: What gave you the idea to launch a franchise of Next Top Model in the Caribbean? WF: Upon receiving American’s Next Top Model as a business and recognizing the lack of original programming created in the Caribbean, once the opportunity presented itself, I bit. Top Model is a proven and popular TV format, which provided us a chance to put our own unique Caribbean spin into this fabulous fashion and beauty mix. TIMMAG: What makes CNTM unique? WF: This show is the first pan-Caribbean show to be televised across the region. We are presenting ourselves as we see ourselves. It’s very empowering and translates well to our audience, whether from the Dutch, English, French or Spanish Caribbean. TIMMAG: As a Miss Universe winner, how does it feel to be on the other side of the table, mentoring the next generation of models and superstars?
WF: Like everything else I have done in my life, there are aspects of the show that I love, working with the girls and fellow judges, planning challenges each week. Elimination is not easy. Being on the panel is great until I have to axe a young lady, particularly when it’s on camera. The further into the process we are, the more attached I become to my girls, despite my better judgment. Secretly, I love them all. I must maintain a balance between nurturing and aloof as not to compromise the competition. But it is hard. TIMMAG: How do shows like Caribbean’s Next Top Model propel a model’s career? WF: One word…VISIBILITY. TIMMAG: With the evolving aesthetics of the fashion industry, will Caribbean’s Next Top Model welcome plus-size and transgender models? WF: Caribbean’s Next Top Model will evolve to include whatever the ideals are of beauty in this industry. ANTM has a history of venturing into less popular waters and making a difference, as a franchise we plan to make ANTM proud in this regard also. TIMMAG: What lessons are you hoping to impart CNTM’s hopefuls with? WF: The business of being a model is real and tough. It’s fiercely competitive. To be a sustained success you have to work hard and consistently, be disciplined and bold. Our winner should be ready to take on the industry, armed with her CNTM experience, and a modeling contract with Mint Management of New York. TIMMAG: You are a woman of boundless energy, who continually reinvents herself. Do you have other projects in the works? WF: Always, always, always…

RICH GRAFF: “Making of the Mob”
By Nicholas Pressly, courtesy of Victoria Pressly Hype LLC
AMC’s new show “MAKING OF THE MOB” premiered this past summer. RICH GRAFF plays the lead role of Lucky Luciano on the highly anticipated new series, directed by John Ealer. In the Wall Street Journal’s first look at the series, Charles “Lucky” Luciano calls together the heads of the New York crime families for a meeting in Chicago. “The blood on the street must stop,” he says. “The cycles of revenge must end.” If only it were that easy. The eight-part series traces the rise of organized crime in New York City over the course of 50 years and features dramatic reenactments, archival footage, and interviews with former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Meyer Lansky II, Chazz Palminteri, Frankie Valli, Mob attorney and former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and historian David Pietrusza. The series is narrated by Ray Liotta. The award winning actor was born and raised in the heart of New York City to immigrant parents and was destined to be on-screen. He also has had unique experiences to prepare for his role. At the age of 11, he moved to Howard Beach, NY
16
and didn’t know at the time, but most of his friend’s fathers were the head of the Gambino crime family. His best friend was Peter Gotti, John Gotti’s youngest son. Others included Angelo Ruggerio’s sons and Jimmie Burke’s son; Jimmie Conway as portrayed in the movie “Goodfellas”. Without ever having to commit a crime, he knew exactly how these people lived, killed, and socialized. As Rich got older and understood what the people around him were going to grow up to become, he carefully distanced himself and was not lured toward the artificial gratification that ultimately traps and dooms people in organized crime. Rich studied with the world renowned acting teacher Wynn Handman at his private studio, and with Peter Minor at T. Schreiber studios. The film and television industry in New York recognized Rich’s natural talents, and after landing several lead roles in a variety of independent movies, he was cast in his first major TV role, as a detective on “Law & Order Criminal Intent” (2011). Rich also had roles in “Insurgent” and “1971.” His breakthrough role on the big screen came as the love interest of Heather Graham in “My Dead Boyfriend” (2015), directed by Anthony Edwards. Sterling Worldwide Entertainment (“Sterling”) and Washington Street Productions announce the distribution of the full-length feature, “FRACTURED,’’ with Gravitas Ventures. “FRACTURED” features a terrific cast headlined by Eric Roberts, Jake Busey and Athena Lebessis. This thriller is directed by Lance KR Kawas. The story follows the beautiful character of May (Athena Lebessis) whose world unravels upon discovering her lover’s bloody scarf. This crimson mystery drives May into a psychiatric ward, under the care of the ominous Dr. Ballard (Eric Roberts) after police discover the scarf in her possession. Detective Harding (Jake Busey) investigates as May begins to exude a whimsical story regarding unsavory characters and multiple murders. For movie lovers who are looking for some chills and thrills, “Fractured” offers the perfect blend of mysterious mind games and compelling characters. Eric Roberts is intensely intriguing as the head of a psychiatric ward, and Jake Busey adds to the dramatic tension as a detective trying to track down a killer. Wryly written and deftly directed by Lance KR Kawas, this frightening feature is perfect for anyone looking to get their scare on. The “FRACTURED” TRAILER link can be viewed at http://bit.ly/1Ga1c7N.
“THE WANNABE,”Coda to the End of the New York Mob and Gangster Movie Genre, By H.S. Bayer Writer-Director NICK SANDOW’S “THE WANNABEE” has NYC in its DNA - 30 locations over 20 days in Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx, and a premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in Manhattan. The film features Vincent Piazza (“Jersey Boys”,“Boardwalk Empire”, “The Sopranos”) in a breakout role dynamically intertwined with equally electric Patricia Arquette (Oscar recipient for “Boyhood”, “Bringing Out the Dead”, and Emmy winner on “Medium”) as an outer-borough version of Bonnie & Clyde. The great Martin Scorsese and Dean Devlin served as executive producers. A period piece based on events that transpired at the time of John Gotti’s trial in 1992, “The Wannabe” presents the perversely aspirational story of Mafia obsessed Thomas Greco (Piazza) and aging, yet sexually alluring Rose (Arquette), desperately seeking ‘to be somebody’. Living in a mob-movie fantasy that becomes tragic reality as their steamy cocaine infused affair spirals downward to an outlaw life of crime, the pair finally achieve ‘fame’ after they “rob the mob” that rebuffed them, en route to their inevitable violent demise. “The Wannabe,” the 2nd film directed by Sandow, follows two decades of acting in more than 30 films, 20 TV shows (“Boardwalk Empire”, “Blue Bloods”, “Law & Order”) and numerous plays. Currently, Nick stars in “Orange Is The New Black” and had major roles in: “The Fitzgerald Family Christmas,” directed by Ed Burns, “The Hungry Ghosts,” written and directed by Michael Imperioli (who plays Piazza’s brother in The “Wannabee”), “The Accidental Husband”, “Resurrecting
18
the Champ”, and Sidney Lumet’s HBO movie “Strip Search.” In 2004, Sandow starred in the 1st play at Michael Imperioli’s legendary Studio Dante - Baptism by Fire, and then directed the theatre’s 2nd play, Henry Flamethrowa and the 3rd play – Ponies. He also directed the screen rendition of “Ponies” in 2011. Sandow developed the script for “The Wannabe” over a number of years and came from the same neighborhood as Greco, growing up on gangster films and around that world. Talent In Motion Magazine recently connected with Nick and had the chance to ask him a couple of questions about the film. TIMMAG: What motivated the story for you?
NS: I read a few news articles on the real couple. I was fascinated with the character of the “Wannabe,” this desperation to want to be something you’re not. I always wanted to stay away from the gangster genre, but the story felt close to me. I could see my way into it - questions about identity… who do I think I am? Who do I want to be? What role does my relationship play in that. What role do movies and pop culture play in my idea of myself? TIMMAG: How did these extremely talented leads and executive producing team fall into place?
NS: Patricia’s name came up in casting and as soon as she got in my head, I couldn’t let the thought of her as Rose go. Michael Imperioli introduced us. She read the script and came on board. Vincent did a reading of the script and was fantastic. Then I worked with him on Boardwalk Empire and we became friends. He got behind the script in a big way, brought the script to Scorsese and it took off from there. Scorsese read it and said – “I love it. What do you want to do”? Working with Marty was a dream come true. He and Dean wanted to tell the story I was after and they kept pointing me in that direction. I was very lucky… very lucky.

RUNNING ON EMPTY LEADS TO A FULL LIFE FOR MULTI-TALENTED MODEL-DJ-ACTRESS
COLLEEN SHANNON, If our Talent in Motion cover model looks familiar, it’s most likely because Colleen Shannon has had the unique honor of being selected as Playboy’s 50th Anniversary Playmate in 2004. She has also made a lasting impression in the entertainment industry as a model in publications such as OK!, Maxim and Loaded; as an actress, with credits that include “How I Met Your Mother,” “FCR” and “Miss Cast Away and the Island Girls;” as a musician, performing with Sting, Snoop Dogg, Paul Oakenfold and Funkmaster Flex; and... as a disc jockey, featured at Harrah’s Atlantic City, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tampa and LG Fashion Week. The blonde beauty has also performed internationally in such countries as Sweden, Lebanon, Abu Dhabi and South Africa. Multi-talented Colleen relates that posing for Playboy Magazine definitely changed her life. “Before that photo shoot, I was a waitress at a popular spot on Sunset Boulevard called Saddle Ranch, and going to college for music, art, photography and psychology. But I loved modeling, along with DJing and acting. So when they told me they would shoot my centerfold with turntables, I was blown away. My manager came up with ‘World’s Sexiest DJ’ -- I was always quite shy of that! I just figured if I can create art for the rest of my life, I will be a happy girl.” The Alaska native and California transplant believes in doing what you love. Of course, that can be challenging when you love to do many different things. “Acting, DJing and modeling are all very different, but still connected in a way,” says Colleen. “I may use the modeling to market myself as a DJ, but you have to be good at it -- no one cares what you look like. Looks may get you in the room, but talent keeps you coming back. As far as acting, I like the psychol-

ogy of using your body as vessel to tell a story, and completely forgetting who YOU are.” DJing has inspired Colleen in a multitude of ways. “I love the saying ‘Keep doing what you’re doing, keep getting what you’re getting!’ At the moment, I am developing a character for an animation project based on a DJ Girl. I also am starting the World DJ Foundation, which will bring musical artists together to make a difference.” Colleen offers the following advice to anyone aspiring to pursue a creative career: “You are only as good as your team. I have had a great run because I had the best agents and managers in the business. Find people who care… don’t just be another face on the talent roster. Also, find a niche that makes you stand out from the crowd. Never be normal!” If and when the always-active Colleen finds time to write her autobiography, she has the perfect title in mind. “It would be called ‘Running on Empty,’ because I have put my last penny and all of my energy into my art, and I still continue to create with a dream and optimism.” For more information, go to Victoria Pressly Hype PR, www.hypeprnow.com.

THEATRE
HAMILTON: Broadway’s Revolutionary New Musical
Theatre Review by Michael Martinez, photos by Joan Marcus After experiencing Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Broadway musical In The Heights, I left the theater feeling I had just witnessed a small miracle. The young composer and lyricist created a successful musical filled with salsa, merengue, rap and Latin-pop. The musical was held together by a book that told a story of Latin Americans in Washington Heights searching for the American Dream. In The Heights went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical and Best Score. Miranda’s new hip-hop infused musical, HAMILTON feels like a revolutionary step forward in the art of musical theatre. The show explores the life of one of our founding fathers and the birth of the “American Dream.” Currently running on Broadway to packed houses and rave reviews, Hamilton is an ambitious triumph. Hamilton is the story of the first Secretary of the United States Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, and the birth of our country during and after the American Revolution. The musical explores the struggles and victories of the men who forged our country and constitution, cast with many of our founding fathers played by African-American actors. Miranda’s score includes hip-hop, pop, R&B, and traditional Broadway musical numbers that fit the book perfectly. Leading the great ensemble cast is Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton. His performance is exceptional and he handles his musical numbers with skill. One of the great supporting performances in Hamilton belongs to Daveed Diggs, who portrays both the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. Diggs is a newcomer to Broadway and he 22 commands the stage. One of
the most electric moments in the show is a political debate between Hamilton and Jefferson played as an old school rap battle. Leslie Odom, Jr. delivers the most moving performance of the show as Aaron Burr. His solo number, “The Room Where It Happens,” captures the emotional and political complexities of Burr. Director Thomas Kail, who helmed In The Heights, brilliantly handles the job of bringing this musically and thematically intricate story to life. Hamilton is frequently described as a “HipHop Musical,” but its musical styles are far more diverse. There are songs that are traditional Broadway musical numbers, jazz influenced, pop, R&B and rap. The genius of this score is how all the different styles work well together to create a unified experience. The book and lyrics are equally amazing. Miranda’s dialogue and lyrics tell the story of Hamilton and the American Revolution in a fresh and exciting way. Hamilton is the most exciting musical to hit Broadway in years. HAMILTON is playing at Richard Rodgers Theatre at 226 West 46th Street, New York City, NY.

He was just as surprised to see me, and as I got out of my car he said, “Gurian, what are you doing here?” And when I told him I was going up to perform, he introduced me to his son Allie Klein, who was also in the show. Robert said he didn’t think he’d ever seen me perform, so it was exciting for me to have him in the audience, and then his son went up for only his second time on stage. Performing must be hereditary because Allie had great stage presence and owned the stage as if he had been performing for years. Not only funny but a really nice guy, just like his dad. The Weinstein Company did a documentary on Robert named after his famous bit, “I Can’t Stop My Leg,” which he first performed on the first season of SNL back in the day, and it’s as funny now as it was then, they plan to have the premiere at Sundance this year. SHERRI SHEPHERD, and Virgil from the WWE Judge Rap Battle, Sherri Talks About Getting Let Go From The View. I ended my week at Rell Battle’s Roast Battle at New York Comedy Club. Emilio greeted
me as I came in and whispered to me that my friend Sherri Shepherd was there. I was so excited to see her, and she looked fantastic, as you’ll see in the photos. I went into the green room/office where all the comics hang out and it was Ricky Velez, Rell Battle, Tone Bell who greeted me by saying, “Gurian, you’re everywhere!”, Virgil from WWE who was also a judge, and Sherri. Sherri told me she’s in “Ride Along 2,” with Kevin Hart coming out January 2016, playing Cory the wedding planner; and she’s also in a football movie with Jon Voight, who plays “Bear” Bryant coming out next month called “Woodlawn,” in which she plays Mama Nathan the mother of Tony Nathan from the Miami Dolphins. Sherri was a judge, but also came out and did a very cool set before the Roast Battle. She told me she hadn’t performed in a while, but you couldn’t tell because she was really funny and very relaxed on stage. She took on a heckler and really put him in his place. When she asked him if he was black he said he was “black as shit.” Turns out he was Indian and she told him he made her believe in abortions. They finally had to escort him out because he was so obnoxious. Sherri said when she and Jenny McCarthy got let go from The View, Jenny cried and she just went and stole everything she could take! She’s also got a new show on The Cooking Channel that she hosts called Holy and Hungry every Sunday night at 10 P.M. Tone Bell told me he’s got a half hour comedy special coming up in November, and casually mentioned his co-starring role on the new show Truth Be Told, airing Friday nights on NBC starting October 16th. And what a week it was in comedy! … So until next week, … I’m OUT!!! See you at the clubs!!! Photos. As Seen Through The Lens of DONATEL: A WORLD WITH A VIEW By Sandra Castillo Photographer DONATEL is on a mission and that is to capture the one, standout image that has never been seen or experienced aesthetically before. Of course, since he rarely leaves home without his camera, it is more than likely his personal agenda is well on its way to being accomplished. For it is with this very instrument, the camera, that has allowed his exceptional talents to marinate in the still waters of his mind’s eye. Donatel is an expert in his field, deftly constructing images veiled in hues and shadows that perfectly translate into what it is he sees when he looks through the lens of his camera. Even though he has been involved with photography for nearly forty years, he considers the last two decades as the ones that have anchored his name to his craft. Donatel has gone on record as saying that the moment he “acquired a photography studio, that’s when I became a professional photographer.” Just like so many of his constituents who view the world through the lens of a camera, Donatel has taken the long and winding road to be recognized for his art. For him, it has always been about the joy of the journey that has allowed him to witness the world and humanity at large, all from the astute perspective of the one whose camera is really an extension of his soul. Originally from New York City, Donatel has called California home since the late ‘80s. When he was living in NYC, in the early 1970’s, he worked as a concert photographer at Madison Square Garden, where he shot concert photos of The Rolling Stones, The Who and many other legendary musical acts. Donatel was also called in to document major sporting events, including those involving the New York Knicks basketball team. “I used to find my way to the basket, the center of the action. This is where I took the photos, which was right under the basket. I’d 332
sit with the other professional photographers and shoot the game and be right in the middle of the action. That was the most fun and exciting part of the assignment,” said Donatel, recalling those moments he and his camera made it to the floor of the Garden. Donatel’s current list of clients include several San Diego publications - Uptown, Gay and Lesbian Times and Buzz Magazine - corporations and real estate agencies throughout Southern California and aspiring models and actors, who seek out his services to obtain that perfect headshot. Donatel is also highly sought after to document major events around town, corporate parties, weddings and the occasional, catered blacktie affairs. Donatel considers his mentor as the late photographer, Herb Ritts, who, sadly, passed away in 2002, and was responsible for creating many of the black-and-white, ground-breaking videos that immortalized the likes of Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson and Madonna, during the early ‘90s. He is also an admirer of the master of portraiture, Richard Avedon, whose stark, edgy portraits of Andy Warhol, Judy Garland, Twiggy and Marilyn Monroe became visual templates for Donatel’s own work. In every photographer’s career, there is usually that one, definitive moment which stands out as extraordinary. For Donatel, it was when he shot a photo of blues guitarist, BB King, during one of his concerts. As Donatel peered through his viewfinder, he could see the performer looking right back at him. It was one of the most gratifying experiences of Donatel’s career, as he witnessed the exchange of real emotion in the eye contact between a living legend and lens man. When asked about his primary objective with his photography, Donatel replied, “I’d like to say that I capture that moment in time… these people are in their own world, and (I am there) to capture that very moment, when they and the universe unite as one.”

KATERINA GANCHAK:
Sculpture, Painter and Renaissance Artist KATERINA GANCHAK is New York based artist, working with glass sculptures and paintings. Sculptures made with techniques such as blown and cast glass formed out of plaster molds. “I have always loved glass,”
says Katerina. “I have been fascinated with this amazing material since I was a child and collected all of the wonderful colors of broken pieces I could find. I think glass, as a complicated material, is great for creating conceptual and emotional work.” Katerina is also painter, working with acrylic on canvas. “I have a feeling that I didn’t choose to be an artist, but the art chose me,” she says. “I have been painting as long as I can remember. I am telling a story of passion; a passion for life itself in all its forms. I portray an unexplainable urge to be connected to something bigger and find meaning for our own existence. I am experimenting with combining rough abstract shapes with emotive human figures; figures that signify the range of emotion from despair to peace; from passion to apathy.
Born in Uzhgorog, Ukraine, Katerina received her bachelors degree in Design at the Transcarpathion Institute of Art and a Masters Degree in Design in Artistic Glass in Lviv National Academy of Art in the Ukraine. MUSIC
A MAN AND HIS MUSIC: MICHAELSAKLER-BERNER By Sandra Castillo As a writer, one of my favorite things in life is having the privilege to meet an individual who make a difference in this world with their art or music. This opportunity is made even the more sweeter when it involves a phone call and invitation to meet MICHAEL SACKLER-BERNER, lead singer of The Slim Kings, who founded the band with his longtime friend, guitarist Henry Geller. Later on, they recruited bassist Andy Attanasio and Liberty DeVitto, former drummer for Billy Joel, to complete the group. Michael’s pedigree includes a litany of prominent individuals - his grandfather was the renowned American psychiatrist-philanthropist, Arthur M. Sackler, founder of the publication, Medical Tribune. Michael’s father, Fred Berner, is a television/film producer, who has worked on Law and Order, and his mother, Elizabeth Sackler, is an arts activist, currently serving as Chairman of the Board of the Brooklyn Museum. A mostly self-taught musician, Michael began his musical journey performing with the band Deegan, while he was 36 still in high school. After
graduation, he relocated to Montreal, Canada and attended McGill University. When Michael graduated and returned to New York, he soon met up with his former teacher, Paul Lambert, who had subsequently moved to New York, and joined Michael, as his bandmate, in The Outside Talkers. Michael has three albums to his credit - the eponymous Michael Sackler-Berner, Beginning, End and In-Between. He has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including studio producers Steve Jordan (Keith Richards), Bob Thiele, Jr. (Bonnie Raitt) and Marshall Crenshaw, who recorded the 1982 single, “Someday, Someway.” His songs have also been used for television, in such shows as Sons of Anarchy and Law and Order. Incidentally, Michael has acted in both Law and Order and Law and Order: Criminal Intent and was featured in small roles in Disney’s, “Straight Talk,” starring Dolly Parton, and the 2009 HBO film, “A Dog Year,” starring Jeff Bridges. Michael Sackler-Berner is doing exactly what he does best and that is create music for the masses and his legacy.
MYRIAM PHIRO Premiers her 2nd Album:
VOYAGES
In 2013 Myriam Phiro released her first EP, "My Rêverie...," that was inspired by the many great French singers that she grew up listening to. After these past few years singing from the Great American Song book, it was time to give tribute to these masterpieces! The album features Latin grooves, bluesy notes, a french twist and Jazz infused. After the warm reception given her debut EP, “My Reverie: Songs From The World of Myriam Phiro,” in 2013, she is now celebrating the release of her very positively reviewed second album, “Voyages,” currently available on ITunes, CDBaby, Amazon and Band camp. “New York City has such an incredible passion for this music and it fills me with joy to share my own experience on this album,” says Phiro. “Since moving here, (she was initially brought here to study musical theatre at the prestigious AMDA/American Musical & Dramatic Academy of New York), I can definitely say that I have learned a great deal. I've worked with so many great musicians on “My Reverie...” and “Voyages.”
Phiro is an internationally-recognized French-Canadian actress, jazz singer, cabaret chanteuse, and dancer who has performed on stages and theaters worldwide. A bi-lingual performer, her influences run from Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Edith Piaf to Jane Monheit, Madeleine Peyroux, Chet Baker, Norah Jones and Manhattan Transfer; and encompass the style and elegance of The Jazz Age of the 1920s, the energy and pizzazz of the Big Band Era, and the intimacy of the classic French music-hall, musical stories told with wit, poignancy, and flair. Her performances feature jazz and French standards and the famous tunes of The Great American Song book, and incorporate elements of swing dance, the Big Bands, and even bossa nova. She has appeared at many New York venues including The Rainbow Room, The Four Seasons, Cercle Rouge, The Bronx Botanical Garden, The Flatiron Room, Brasserie Julien, The Triad Theatre, Manderley Bar, and The Back Room Speakeasy. Outside the U.S., in Montreal at The House of Jazz, Cafe de la Pige and The Montreal International Jazz Festival; and in Montreux, Switzerland at Harry's New York Bar at The Montreux Palace hotel. Jazz/Klezmer Fusion Band KLAZZ-MA-TAZZ
Release TANGIBILITY TANGIBILITY, released this past September via One Trick Dog Records, is the debut album from Klazz-Ma-Tazz; a genre bending ensemble that fuses jazz and klezmer, among other styles of music. It is clear by listening to this record that this is a talented group of musicians on a quest to chart new musical territory and not be confined by one particular genre. Very much based in jazz, this album courses through the influences of Klezmer, Balkan folk music, Native American tribal dances, Indian classical music, as well as English and Irish folk music and more. Klazz-Ma-Tazz members include: Benjamin Sutin (Violin and Tambourine), Elijah Shiffer (Alto Saxophone and Clarinet), Grant Goldstein (Electric Guitar), Ben Rosenblum (Piano and Harmonium), Mat Muntz (Upright Bass), Matt Scarano (Drums), and Ani Challa (Tabla). The opening tracks “Papini,” followed by “Sari Cicek,” combine both klezmer and Turkish folk respectively. The following two tracks contain Benjamin Sutin originals entitled “Thank You” and “Tangibility.” Both appropriately titled, offer a palpable framework that fuses jazz and klezmer. There is a high level of focus that comes through on this recording, while leaving room for improvisation and a kind of energy that often can only be captured live. The group played a remarkable show 38 celebrating their debut
release on September 2nd at the renowned Cornelia Street Café in New York City. Tangibility continues with the Balkan-African influenced “Tbilisi”, written by bassist Mat Muntz. This is very much an eclectic and culturally rich concoction of music executed in a cohesive manner. “Miserlou” is a creative take on the Eastern Mediterranean traditional, arranged by band leader Benjamin Sutin. This group is very honest in their musical approach, and on “Speak the Truth”, another Sutin original, there is a good sense that there is a conscious effort to do so. The album closes out with “Requiem,” which is written by Benjamin Sutin, as well as Ben Rosenblum and Grant Goldstein, and lastly “Kluez.” A collective effort by finely trained musicians each in their own right, there is a unifying quality to this music, as it pays homage to an assortment of genres and cultures. The production values on this disc are reminiscent of the best production from the 70s. The mixing and mastering benefits from the jazz and classical expertise of engineer Dev Avidon, and the graphics capture the middle eastern/balkan ethos. This is through and through a great record with a vision, and Klazz-Ma-Tazz is surely a talent on the rise. A Rousing Musical Tribute to the Life ff A Jazz Legend...
FRANK MORGAN
For three decades, in the jazz clubs and recording studios of Los Angeles, anyone could tell you that FRANK MORGAN was one of the best saxophone players around. But if you wanted to hear Morgan play live, you would have to go to San Quentin State Prison. The former whiz kid, who once seemed destined to step into the shoes of ground breaking saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker, instead spent the better part of 30 years in a series of jail cells, a convicted thief and an addict.
For more information: www.thefrankmorganproject.com
In the documentary, SOUND OF REDEMPTION: THE FRANK MORGAN STORY, that premiered at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival, director NC Heikin recreates the life of Frank Morgan in concert form, tracing his progress from teenage musical prodigy to hardcore junkie and, finally, to one of the music world’s most remarkable comeback stories. A one-night-only, all-star musical tribute filmed live at San Quentin, forms the backbone of a film that brings together the past, present and future of Morgan’s musical legacy. Moving seamlessly between the thrilling live performance and the riveting true story of a musician whose talent first destroyed and then redeemed him, the award-winning filmmaker paints a searingly honest portrait of a prodigiously gifted, tragically flawed musical genius.

TRAVEL
The Islands of New England Cruise By Steve Kaplan
If you are looking for a friendly, intimate family type cruise, then look no further than BLOUNT CRUISES. Their motto is “We go to places where the big ships cannot!!” Their small vessels are engineered to sail into coves, shallow waters, canals and small islands, which make their cruises quite unique. My travelling companion and I recently experienced their small ship way of cruising on a seven-day Islands of New England cruise. Most of the Blount Cruises depart from either U.S. or Canadian cities, so getting there is easy. No overnight jet-lagged flights to far away countries that leave you exhausted for half the cruise. Getting to a Blount Cruise is as easy as taking a car, train, bus or short flight to embarkation cities. As a result, you are in a relaxed frame of mind when you reach their embarkation ports. We took a relaxing train ride from New York City, NY to Warren, Rhode Island, and in a little over three hours we were on the ship and ready to sail. There were also no long lines to board the ship or complicated forms to fill out. Our first day of sailing took us down the Sakonnet river to Cuttyhunk, Massachusetts, a remote island off the coast of Cape Cod. That night we dined on delicious fresh lobster. The menu changes daily with such fabulous gourmet dishes as Sea Bass, Mahi Mahi, Salmon, lamb chops, fresh vegetables, fruits and meats. There is also a full breakfast and lunch every day with mouth-watering delights. In addition, wine and beer are complimentary with every meal. Our second day was my favorite port, picturesque Nantucket. Our guided tour took us to Nantucket’s quiet 42 harbors, sandy beaches
and elegant mansions. Nantucket is a must on your bucket list. Day three was a visit to world famous Martha’s Vineyard, with “Ginger Bread” cottages of many vibrant colors. Martha’s Vineyard is only accessible by boat or air. It’s a very affluent summer haven with many celebrities making their homes here. Martha’s Vineyard is also known for its laid back lifestyle, red clay architecture and its natural beauty. The next day we visited New Bedford, Massachusetts, once the capital of the whaling industry. Their Whaling Museum boasts the bones of a fifty foot whale which, pardon the pun, blew us away. “Thar She Blows,” was the trade mark of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, published in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1851. The fifth day brought us to Newport, Rhode Island, the home of the rich and famous, with million dollar mansions on Bellevue Avenue. We visited the famous Vanderbilt Mansion known as the “Breakers,” which is a seventy-room Italian Renaissance style palazzo on breathtaking manicured grounds. The Vanderbilts made their money in railroading and built this home as a summer palace in the late 1890s. Our last port of call was Block Island, named one of the last “Great Places on Earth” by the Nature Conservancy of NY. We loved the crashing waves hitting the shore next to the Southeast Lighthouse. Block Island has not changed in hundreds of years. It’s a place not to be missed. For more information, go to blountsmallshipadventures.com. JERUSALEM:
Where the Old City Meets the New Sea Side By Mark Seidman As a travel-agent for twenty-five years, I have traveled extensively throughout Europe, the middle east, the Caribbean and the south seas. Just recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit my homeland, Jerusalem. It was truly a homecoming as the extremely friendly people make you feel right at home. Jerusalem is a fantastic cosmopolitan international destination, catering to the major religions of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. It has never lost its age-old charm and history, especially it’s glorious beauty observed day or night with stone monuments bathing in golden hues! A visit to the walled old city is a must, as you will be transported to an ancient time! On the western side of Israel, on the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea, is the ultra-modern city of TEL-AVIV. Tel -Aviv is a vibrant, chic, modern city with great beaches, restaurants, art galleries; and an expansive night life, with clubs and discos along the sea. Often called ‘the city that never stops,’ Tel-Aviv was the first modern Jewish city built in Israel, and is the country’s economic and cultural center. Near Tel-Aviv is JAFFA, a city living in the present, yet looking towards the future. It is becoming a hip tourist spot, with a great night life scene, full of new clubs and discos and some very interesting art museums. Once the ancient port of the eastern Mediterranean known as the City of Oranges, it was here that King Richard the Lionhearted defeated Saladin. Further north along the sea you will come upon the ancient crusader city of ACRE, built upon the sea to protect the riches of the land around the shipping ports. Here you find one of the best examples of the Knights Templar architecture. Also you will see the Ottoman influence resembling Istanbul. Acre is an interesting and charming city, great for a glimpse of the past, a festival or just for a romantic stroll along the city walls over the Mediterranean sea. From the old city of Jerusalem to the new sea side scene on the Mediterranean, Israel is well worth a visit! You will be mesmerized by the ancient contrasting with the modern!

XL FRANCE Airlines… The Affordable Carrier By Babbie De Derian, Travel Editor
XL FRANCE AIRWAYS, formerly Star Airlines, a small non-classical “affordable carrier,” offers seasonal non-stop Economy and Premier Galaxy Service to Paris and beyond, from New York, Miami, San Francisco and LA. Laurent Magnin, President Directeur General of XL France, was born into the travel business, following his father into the industry. He is a man of many talents and refined taste… Tanzania, Thailand and Morocco, his countries of choice; and he relaxes on his farm outside of Paris with his actress wife and three sons, one a classical pianist. In a recent phone interview, Laurent shared his passion and humor for life and the future of the airline industry. His dream is to expand XL, not only as the “affordable carrier,” but also as the airline that “puts people in movement so they can discover other countries and cultures.” TIMMAG: You market XL as the “affordable airline” and offer passengers Economy or Premier Galaxy classes of service. How does that fit into the price structures of other carriers? LAURENT: We are not a classical airline and are not affected by the high costs of big airlines. TIMMAG: To keep ticket costs down, does that mean passengers have to pay for onboard meals”? LAURENT: On long routes passengers can not stay for 10 hours without food. We are against “everything for a price.” I find it ludicrous for someone to charge for meals on an International flight. We offer all passengers a hot meal and snacks.” TIMMAG: Any special perks? LAURENT: On the first and last flights of the season, we bring chefs on board from each city for a special treat.
46
TIMMAG: What are the comfort differences between Economy
and Premier Galaxy”? LAURENT: We are currently offering Premier Galaxy on flights from the West Coast. There’s 36 inches of leg room and 30 inch wide seats and non-stop service to Paris from four U.S. cities. TIMMAG: You are motivated by your “travel by price” philosophy. How do you plan to make travel a reality for those who do not believe they can afford it”? LAURENT: With all the rising problems around the world, people are flying less. Our dream is to make it possible for the young and old to experience the world. More and more travelers cannot afford to pay the high cost of airline tickets. We want to attract and service the leisure and business traveler who travels once a year and offer them a year round program. 20 to 30% of younger companies cannot pay the costs of flying on a classical carrier. We are providing the means to do so. I believe in the future low cost carriers will control the market offering low fares on long hauls. TIMMAG: Will you find a way to offer “affordable business class service” on future flights”? LAURENT: As life changes and a company grows, you need to move in new directions. TIMMAG: In March 2013 XL created an “XL Loves Women” initiative... tell me about it”? LAURENT: XL employs an equal number of women as men, many as pilots. We celebrated the 31st anniversary of the ‘International Day of the Woman,’ with our own ‘XL Loves Women Initiative’ that discovered and profiled five women who we determined contribute everyday to society. TIMMAG: Are you striving to be the French version of the American airline magnate, Richard Branson”? LAURENT: I certainly admire the man. TIMMAG: Laurent thanks for sharing. I look forward to flying XL FRANCE in the future. For information, APG USA INC | 420 Lexington Ave. Suite 2523 | New York, NY 10170. T: 201484-8036 or www.xlairlines.com.

FOOD
IL VALENTINO OSTERIO: By A. Brooks, Photos by Doug Forbes
Authentic Tuscan Cuisine
Dining at IL VALENTINO OSTERIO was truly like being swept away to a Tuscan villa in the Italian country-side, surrounded by good food, family and friends!
Greeted by general manager, Vittorio and his talented staff, my guest and I were immediately welcomed as family to the warm and intimate Italian eatery. Restaurateur Mirso Lekic has brought his 20-year tradition of serving Tuscan cuisine to the upper east side, relocating from his original location in the Sutton Hotel (mid-town); where the elegant spot was a frequent hangout of celebrities, business impresarios, political figures and utilized for United Nation events. Together, with Dan Sehic of C3D Architecture, they have created an authentic, Tuscan haven. An exposed brick oven is a focal point of the room and along the walls is a line of banquettes designed in leather with gold threading detail. Mango wood table tops and chairs with metal legs, mix traditional and modern design elements to give a rich and rustic feel to the room. Executive Consulting Chef Erminio Conte, formerly the Executive Chef of Serafina, and Sous Chef Lauro Sucuz, formerly of Petaluma and Elios, have carried over their menu from the original location. Each day the staff freshly bakes all of the breads and pizzas, including their signature Truffle Pizza, with fresh black truffle, fontina cheese, ricotta, homemade fresh mozzarella and truffle oil. Signature dishes include the Cavatelli al Porfumo, with homemade pasta shells tossed with tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil or the Pasta Nera con Gamberi e Asaparagi, with black tagliolini, shrimp, asparagus and tomatoes.
48
My guest and I began our culinary adventure with freshly baked bread, served with a heavenly eggplant puree; both made on-site. For the
antipasto, we tried the delicious Polpo Alla Griglia: charred baby octopus over a chick pea stew and fennel puree and the Polpette: mini meatballs in tomato sauce that surround a pouched egg, draped over feta and croutons, are beyond amazing. For the secondi piatti, we try two specials of the evening: the Orata, a fish served with a white wine sauce, lemon and capers, paired with mussels and shrimp. The Bisteca alla Firoentina, a thick cut, but not over seasoned rib eye steak, was served with wedged potatoes and grilled vegetables. Both were ample and hearty servings. And for dessert, we ordered the tiramasu and paired it with the Fall Blackberry cocktail: with vodka, lemon juice, agave syrup, earl grey tea and prosecco. A true Tuscan meal fit for a royal family... as we truly felt we were. IL VALENTINO OSTERIA is located at 1078 1st Avenue, NYC.
