Laser Genesis Skin Therapy at By A. Brooks
My visit to Med Spa 44 was beyond therapeutic. I was warmly greeted by an attentive staff that immediately whisked me away to a private, comfortable and hygienic room. No waiting time! The Laser Genesis Skin Therapy is a non-invasive procedure based on thermal technology to treat fine line wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin texture, and diffuse redness and scars. After being advised of a slight burning sensation, I acclimated to the beeps of the thermal wand and began to feel relaxed almost to a meditative state. My aethestician, Carmen, who has over 25 years experience in the field, explained the procedure as way to safely and effectively achieve a variety of cosmetic goals, from hair removal to body slimming. The treatment usually lasts about a half-hour, perfect for a lunch time quickie, and results are subtle, yet immediately leave you a 100% energized. Four to six treatments are suggested for optimal achievement, but results vary. There are few, if any side effects, the most common being a slight redness which goes away within a few hours. Founded by Ronald D. Blatt, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., Med Spa 44 is a full-service spa offering a wide array of luxurious face and body services including waxing, facials and a variety of other leading edge treatments. An expert in the field of women’s health for over 30 years, Dr. Blatt has built one of the world’s top health care practices in New York City, where he is Chief Surgeon and Medical Director of the Manhattan Center for Vaginal Surgery and the Manhattan Centers for Women’s Health. In addition to standard spa services, which are affordable and time efficient, Med Spa 44, with its highly trained team of certified aestheticians, provides a wide array of state-of-the-art laser and skin rejuvenation treatments, including Botox and the newest fillers. After reviewing the list of in-house services, that includes their Signature Anti-aging Treatment/60 minutes or the cool sculpting procedure, a non-surgical way to lose those annoying bumps and bulges of stubborn fat, I decide my next visit will be to try the fraxel 1550 skin resurfacing treatment... great for sun damaged skin, and perfect timing for looking great for the holidays! SPA AQUA:
Turning Moments Into Memories... A Place to Immerse and Relax, By Babbie De Derian
Spa Aqua’s Soffio D’Polesia Ritual
The curing power of touch is an ancient mystery, as old as the world itself. At the Live Aqua Resort in Cancun, Mexico, Spa Aqua offers the fusion of aromatherapy and traditional massages from cultures around the world. Its mission is to transport guests to a totally stress-free state of being and a deeper connection to their soul. From these ancient cultures, the spa has developed an exclusive unique blend of essential oils that are used in treatments to relax, rejuvenate and heal the body, mind and spirit: eucalyptus, peppermint and Spanish rosemary for relaxation... a mix of oriental aromas: olibanum tint and incense to calm the nervous system… black coconut and jasmine flowers to clear the mind… a blend of fresh orange, grapefruit, rosemary and ginger to renew the spirit and revitalize the body… and to energize: lemongrass, combined with the freshness of spearmint. Spa Director Jaime Martinez has been creating spas for 25 years. He has opened 15 spas in Mexico, and now considers Spa Aqua “his home.” Jaime Martinez trains and oversees a staff of 40; there are 11 treatment rooms, plus the option of a heavenly beach massage. Treatments costs are additional, but fairly priced and well worth the indulgence.

My first treatment began with a soak in a warm pool. As I rested my head, an attendant placed chilled cucumber slices on my eyes, and then covered them with a cold towel that had been soaked in flower water. After 10 minutes of buoyant floatation, I moved to a cool pool to close my pores, and then retreated into the relaxation room. A hot pillow filled with buckwheat was placed around my neck, and I surrendered to the sight and sounds of a waterfall, the smells of aromatherapy oils, and the mesmerizing flicker of candles. When Impala, my massage therapist, came to claim me, I was totally removed from the reality of having flown in from New York, but a few hours ago.
Once under the sheet, lying face down, a hot blanket filled with pockets of sand was placed on my back. Impala’s strong hands then began pressing down on the blanket along my pressure points. This 80 minute ritual was an amazing mix of Thai, Indian, Mayan and Swedish massage techniques, combined with a penetrating infused mix of essential oils: Monoi oil, (considered the “sacred oil of the Polynesians” and traditionally used by priests in worship ceremonies to anoint newborns), tiara flowers and coconut oil, for their hydrating properties, and ylang ylang to stimulate blood circulation. I am told the intense floral aroma of the tiara flower instills calmness and relaxation during a massage. Impala stretches and rotates my limbs into yoga positions, strokes deep into my tissues, and then manipulates my head and shoulders into a relaxed state of flexibility. That afternoon, I return to the spa for the Mayan Secret Ritual. Many cultures use the healing power of stones for spiritual balance and restoration, believing stones were filled with energy and vitality when water gently flowed through them. This treatment uses the healing power of three large stones for spirit, protection and energy. Alternating from hot to cold, they are dipped in water and essential oils and then used with deft strokes to balance energy points and eliminate stored stress. The next day’s treatment, the Caviar Deluxe Facial, was the most intensive and luxurious face treatment my skin has ever experienced. After a thorough deep cleansing, exfoliation, steam, extraction and massage, a mix of 100% caviar, pearl dust, collagen and elastin was applied to my face and neck. A thick black mud mask was then brushed over the caviar, and left to set and dry. I could feel it hardening, and after about 15 minutes, my therapist gently pried off the sculpted mold of my face, leaving my newly restored skin glowing, plumped and radiant. But, to be perfectly honest, I would have liked a few spoonfuls of caviar and a flute of champagne to top off this decadent ritual. In Memory... Designer MICHELE SAVOIA
Edited by Athena Starr
Left pic: Savoia, center with Ricky Martin, below: with friends Lee & Alberto
Menswear designer Michele Savoia, who created clothing for movie stars, died earlier this year of a drowning accident at age 55. His body was discovered off Chelsea Piers, not far from where he lived aboard his boat. Savoia, who was known as “Savoia the Tailor,” was last seen leaving Paris Hilton’s party at the Manhattan nightclub Marquee. Born in Hoboken, N.J., Savoia originally wanted to become a cartoonist for Disney. He switched gears after an art teacher he adored encouraged him to use his talent for fashion. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC in the ‘70s, he trained under designer Bill Kaiserman and then launched the House of Savoia in 1984. The firm was soon dressing Hollywood stars like Matt Dillon, Robert DeNiro, Chris Noth and Mickey Rourke, as well as creating costumes for Broadway shows, including the revival of “Evita” and Nora Ephron’s posthumous play, “Lucky Guy.” “The self-proclaimed “bad boy of fashion” also designed nightclub interiors and owned two clubs -- Fat Black Pussycat and The Cheetah Club -- until the mid-’90s. Outside of work, Savoia was an old-school New Yorker with a penchant for the art deco era. He liked to smoke, ride motorcycles, listen to Tony Bennett, watch crime films and get tattoos...” was reported by The Daily Beast, who covered one of the many stories in the news reporting his life and death. A memorial party this past year hosted at Macao Lounge in Soho, NY, with family and friends of Savoia, celebrated his life in a ‘20s theme style; an era as fabulous as he was. WOLF DOG TALES... The Animated Film and Book Series WOLF DOG TALES is an animated film that takes you through a series of stories inspired by the ancient wisdoms of animals that teach about respecting life and earth. “One day an ancient one took his grandson out for a walk, when suddenly, out of nowhere, they came across two wolves in a fight to the death -- the battle between the good wolf and the bad wolf... the fight that goes on inside all of us. The one that wins, is the one that you feed.” Wolf Dog Tales is Director Bernadine Santistevan’s first animated film. She was born and raised in a rural community in New Mexico, where her family has lived for over 400 years after leaving Spain during the inquisition. The unique blend of her old, Cervantes-like Spanish culture, with the Native American cultures of New Mexico, is part of the inspiration for this film. The film’s animation is done by Igor, who is an Emmy Award winning animator/ designer, classically trained at the Zagreb Film school of animation. Other collaborators include Robert Mirabal, the music director for the film, Larry Fessenden, who is the voice of the Wolf Dog, and Begonia Colomar, the color grading/vfx expert. The film has several live action transitions that were shot by editor Doug Forbes, who also shot the film’s poster, which was a real sand painting, with some modifications. Wolf dog tails.com has won several film festivals including Comicon and Harlem. It is currently running in a museum in Queensland, Australia and has been developed into an educational curriculum for children. In 2012 it was in the top 50 picks for Oscar nomination for animated shorts. “The Wolf Dog Tales series of children’s illustrated books is one of the many ways we are sharing the ancient stories about respecting life and the earth that are part of our award-winning animated film, Wolf Dog Tales,” says Bernadine Santistevan. “In the same way the film was created using sand, the illustrations in this book series are also uniquely made with sand. Many people have compared these books to the classic fairy tales of our childhood, such as the book “The Little Prince”— a timeless story enjoyed by both children and adults around the world.”

Text for the series is also by Bernadine Santistevan and images by Igor. If you would like to learn more about Wolf Dog Tales, go to wolfdogtails.com, friend them on Facebook, email at info@wolfdogtales.com or contact them at books@wolfdogtales.com.

Broadway Review:
This Is Our Youth,
Steppenwolf’s “This Is Our Youth,” the acclaimed revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s 1996 comedy about rebellious rich kids in 1982 Upper West Side of Manhattan is a marvelous must-see production.
cocaine with the money, inviting girls over for drinks, drugs and sex, and then selling the remaining cocaine. Cera portrays Warren as an anxious and awkward young man who admires the bullying and verbally abusive Dennis. Culkin’s character is sleek, brutal and, at times, reveals his insecurities and glimpses of empathy for Warren.
The main reason to see this modern classic is the opportunity to experience a unique trio of young actors, who display a remarkable chemistry. This current Broadway production features Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin and Tavi Gevinson. Film and television star Michael Cera has established a marquee name for himself with his work on the FOX series “Arrested Development” and starring roles in Superbad, Juno, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and This Is The End. Kieran Culkin is an experienced stage and film actor who has recently starred in the film Margaret (written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan). Tavi Gevinson, the editor-in-chief of the sensational website for teenage girls, Rookie, also stars.
When Dennis leaves to purchase the drugs, the play takes a touching and romantic turn when Jessica (Gevinson) arrives for the party. Waiting for Dennis to return, the two exchange an uncomfortable conversation until the ice is broken when Jessica suggests they listen to music. Warren pulls out a Frank Zappa album from his suitcase and she and Jessica dance in a wildly funny and touching scene. Warren, who is now comfortable with communicating his attraction to Jessica, suggests they spend a night at a luxury hotel, paid for with his stolen funds. The second act deals with the aftermath of the one night fling and the botched plan to sell the drugs.
The play opens with Warren (Cera) arriving at the apartment of his self-absorbed drug dealing buddy Dennis (Culkin) having been thrown out of his home by his father, managing to swipe $15,000 from dad on his way out. At first, Dennis is annoyed at this intrusion, then softens a bit when they smoke some pot Warren has purchased from a rival drug dealer. When Dennis discovers his pal has stolen cash he tries to get rid of his guest. The pair then devise a scheme involving purchasing

Tony winning director Anna D. Shapiro (August: Osage County, Of Mice and Men) expertly helms this trio of young actors. She brings to life playwright Lonergan’s characters, who seem lost and without direction in life, but who eventually reveal their search for love and meaning in life. “This Is Our Youth,” is a rare example of a Broadway revival that succeeds on all levels. This Is Our Youth is playing at the Cort Theatre, 138 West 48th Street, NY, NY, www.thisisouryouthbroadway.com.
Hudson’s Way By Rachel Sokol
Hudson Oliveira is a rising star whose viral videos are generating a big buzz. In the world of showbiz, the term “triple threat” generally refers to someone who is the whole package: they can act, sing, and dance. Certainly, there are plenty of triple threats in tinseltown, but like a sweet treat, there’s always room for more. Meet Hudson Oliveira, who acts, sings— and, you guessed it!—dances. In his teens, he moved to New York City from his native Belo Horizonte, Brazil after he receiving a government-sponsored grant to study the performing arts. In Brazil, Hudson—who has always been musically inclined—received recognition for “Best Up and Coming Actor” in an awards show similar to the American-version the SAG awards. This motivated him to head to The Big Apple, enroll at the famed Lee Strasberg Institute, and see how far he could span his creative talents in the United States. In New York, Hudson recorded a demo and sent copies around to record labels. Music industry executive Clive Davis was interested in hearing more, and they met. “But, it was at the end of my grant to study in the U.S. and the next day I was returning to Brazil,” recalls Hudson, acknowledging he may have been too young and not quite ready to take on the music world at that point in his young life. “However, Clive thought I’d do well in the Spanish market.” Hudson returned home to Brazil, but soon returned back to the U.S. with the creative arts still on his mind. “I worked at an arts summer camp in Ohio, hosted kids and corporate parties in New York, and DJ’ed in Times Square,” he says. He even relocated to Los Angeles for a while and appeared as an extra (dancer) in a Jennifer Lopez movie called El Cantate. Being so busy now that he was back in the states, Hudson didn’t give much more thought to his vocal demo that intrigued Clive Davis years earlier; although music still played a huge role in his life. He sort of “put that demo aside” and just worked on other gigs. Sadly, when his mom fell ill back in Brazil, Hudson had to return home and let his roller coaster emotions channel him through the light and dark periods. Inspired by his mother and the life lessons she taught him, he remembered that demo
from years ago. He knew it was time to focus on personal songwriting and singing again. “My song, “The Light Is In You,” is a mix of everything,” he says. “It’s in honor of my mom, all moms, and inspired a bit by kabbalah, too. The message of this song is you go through so many things in your life, good and bad, with your soul still intact. I wanted to pass this message on to as many people as I could.” Hudson’s mother’s pearls of wisdom helped inspire him to put together a benefit concert in 2014 at New York City’s The Cutting Room, where the evening’s message was about sharing, giving, and one’s inner light. Musically rejuvenated, Hudson recently created a video for “The Light Is In You,” which went viral on social media. He also did a cover version of Sia’s song “Chandelier.” “People keep sharing my music videos on facebook and YouTube, which is great,” says Hudson. “I hope to get more people interested in what I do. Besides doing a cover song music video project; I’m working on a video for my original song “Balance”.” Keep an eye out on YouTube for more personal videos. Hudson is a star on the rise! The Comedy World Loses Two Legends: JOAN RIVERS AND ROBIN WILLIAMS, By Jerry L. Kahn
Within one month, the comedy world lost two of its most legendary performers, JOAN RIVERS and ROBIN WILLIAMS. Williams committed suicide on August 11th, and Rivers died on September 4th, from medical complications following an endoscopy the week before. Born as Joan Alexandra Molinsky, JOAN RIVERS began her comedy career shortly after college. Her first big role was as a writer (and bait) for Candid Camera. Inspired by numerous entertainers, including Lenny Bruce, Johnny Carson, and Elaine May, she became a pioneer for female comediennes. She was one of the first women to make it big in comedy, and she didn’t follow the era’s female stereotypes. She was known for being very brash on stage, and for having numerous plastic surgeries. In person, she was very polite and generous... while performing, she ripped into numerous celebrities, especially about their looks and clothing. Rivers succeeded across many platforms. She acted in numerous movies and television shows, produced TV shows, and was a regular guest host on the “Tonight Show.” However, she and “Tonight Show” host Johnny Carson had a falling out when Rivers accepted the position to host her own late night show, which competed against Carson’s. Carson never spoke to her again, and banned her from his show. Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien continued the ban, but Jimmy Fallon had Rivers on the Late Night show 22 during his first night as host this past March.
Rivers was nominated for numerous awards, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989. At the end of her life, she had three concurrent shows: a reality show, a fashion show, and a Web talk show. ROBIN MCLAURIN WILLIAMs was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 21, 1951. The son of parents who travelled frequently, Williams was raised by his maid, and moved several times as a child. According to Williams, this is how he developed his sense of humor. When Williams graduated from high school in 1969, he was voted “Funniest” and “Most Likely Not to Succeed.” He pursued a career in entertainment by attending the prestigious Julliard School, where he received a full scholarship. He and Christopher Reeve were the only two students to be accepted into the Advanced Program. He left Julliard during his junior year, after being described as a “Genius,” and being told that there is nothing left for Julliard to teach him. Williams performed stand-up comedy in San Francisco in the mid-1970’s. His big break came when he appeared as Mork, who was an alien on an episode of Happy Days. That led to a spinoff series, “Mork and Mindy.” Ultimately, he appeared in many movies, including The World According to Garp, Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Awakenings, The Fisher King, Hook, Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, The Birdcage, Good Will Hunting, One Hour Photo, and Night at the Museum.
Williams was in numerous television shows, including dozens of appearances on The “Tonight Show” and “Late Night,” three HBO comedy specials, “Saturday Night Live,” and many sitcoms. He co-hosted the Academy Awards in 1986 and was well-recognized as one of the greatest comedic talents, being named as the Funniest Man Alive by Entertainment Weekly in 1997, the 13th Greatest Stand-Up Comic of All-Time by Comedy Central in 2004, and 7th biggest Box Office Star of the 1990’s by Star TV, just to name a few. He received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990. When Williams was given scripts, he often improvised the lines. He did this so much that he began to receive scripts with gaps in them, where he was told to ad lib. He also had a unique ability to immediately pick up and perform in various accents, and to impersonate other people. Immediately prior to his death, Williams was suffering from severe depression and the beginning of Parkinson’s Disease. He was sober, but had entered rehabilitation for alcoholism shortly before his death. Like Joan Rivers, Robin Williams was very philanthropic, and gave to a wide variety of causes. We will miss both of them and their bright shining stars.

ACA GALLERIES: 80 Years of Advocacy for American Art
Rockwell Kent... William Gropper... Raphael and Moses Soyer... Louise Nevelson... Faith Ringgold... and on and on... the list of giants of American art whose careers were established or advanced by ACA Galleries would cover several pages. They are artists who have had something to say; a social conscience to express; a radical concept of art to advocate. On August 16, 1932, artists with a social passion and modern spirit found a champion with the opening of ACA Gallery under the tutelage of owner Herman Baron on Madison Avenue, NY, NY. By 1987, its distinctive vision led the gallery to become one of the most distinguished galleries in the celebrated Fuller Building on east 57th street in New York City, continuing to advocate for new and socially conscious voices in American art. Gallery Director Sidney Bergen maintained the practice of including works by women, people of color, and artists with untraditional points of view. In 1995, its important exhibition, “American Collage,” featured work by the esteemed African-America artist Romare Bearden; the powerful Abstract Expressionist Grace
John Mellancamp, A Room Full of Angels, 2013 Oil on Canvas, A recent exhibition: Social Art In America: Then And Now, featured past masters and current visionaries such as James Chapin, William Gropper, George Grosz, Philip Evergood, Robert Gwathmey, Joseph Hirsch, Jack Levine and Raphael Soyer, representing the historic tradition; and Sue Coe, Luis Jimenez, John Mellencamp, and Faith Ringgold representing contemporary expressions of Social Art.

Philip Evergood, Renunciation, 1946, Oil on Canvas. Hartigan; innovators Robert Rauschenberg and Joseph Cornell, and others. ACA’s place at the center of art activity was assured with its move in 2000 to its current location in New York’s Chelsea district, where several hundred galleries offer the latest in contemporary American and International art. In this eclectic mix, ACA Galleries, has kept its voice distinct. Its inventory includes its legacy of the finest progressive, innovative, socially conscious paintings, prints, collage and sculpture by artists who are now recognized as the backbone of Twentieth Century American art. The exhibition traced the 1930’s cry for economic justice, through mid-century struggles for civil rights, to the present, with our fragile social compact still being threatened. Though their times and social concerns are different, what unites their work is an understanding that the progress of civilization is often paid by the most vulnerable of society. ACA GALLERY is located at 501 West 20th Street, NY, NY. For more information: acagalleries.com, 212.206.8080.

Experimentalist CYNTHIA KARALLA,
By Bobby Jalaludin
Cynthia Karalla is an experimentalist. In her early painting years, Karalla found that by pushing paint through the canvas, then tearing the canvas into strips, the inside of the canvas color would become exposed... sending the canvas almost back to its humble beginnings of its threads. Moving outside the studio with a camera in the new digital age, she started experimenting with two to 20-minute open shutter portraits in order to capture the energy of the sitter or the unknown movements captured by a flash. This series was titled “Move and Flash.” From there, she moved on to integrate the use of photoshop to create a piano out of penises in “The Baby Grand Piano.” After this, she turned her camera into a microscope to shoot human fat for the series “Fat Land.” As of 2012, Karalla has gone back to the celluloid... experimenting in the destruction of the fixed emulsion of film. For Karalla this process symbolizes life itself, where we all lack control as to what our future might hold.

NICOLAS ARJONA… Art Is A Process

“ART IS A PROCESS OF REALIZATION ... I think art is a record. Art tells us not only where we are coming from, but where we are heading to in relation to where we are. Art is all encompassing, from the quickness of the past, to the ever present that instantly becomes the past, to the future that takes over right away with a new manufacture of dreams, that include every hour, every minute, every second... thus is the ever changing form that is ‘art’. I am empowered by success and I am inspired and motivated by ‘the fantastic,’ where innovation meets reality and it becomes something tangible and useful. I call it ‘amazing intelligence,’ when we all come together as one to create something ‘beautiful’ and ‘practical’ at the same time. I worship technology and am a great fan of the fashion industry, working with other creative individuals who are inspired and motivated by the function of art.” In the visual arts, I create small (7x7 in) paper tiles collages (cares de mosaic) with interesting visual effects that serve as a bridge between fashion communications in different social circles of that industry and art. I find the freedom to present my ideas to the senses of others looking exactly as I perceive them in my imagination and as the ‘product’ I envisioned them to be. Nicolas Arjona, 2014

Nature at It’s Best... The Photography of PHIL ALLEN Artist Phil Allen takes simple photos without any special effects or enhancements, because, he believes nature is beautiful as it is. The English countryside is host to many awe inspiring images such as a Dartmoor pony, a butterfly, a young turkey chic, or a sunset over a ocean landscape. “Hopefully these pictures will inspire and motivate people to be more aware of nature and take some time out to slow down, and just see what is all around them,” says Phil. “That can lead to a better understanding of the world in which we live, and are a part of... so try to slow down, look and learn and enjoy!” Phil Allen, 2014

How does Sound Therapy work? Sound can stimulate healing when used appropriately. Chanting, singing, playing bells, singing bowls, gongs, drums, or a chime tree positively affects our mind and body. The tendency of using these modalities is toward harmony in nature.
SOUND THERAPY:
An Alternative Practice with a Holistic Approach By Jo Lance The truth is that the effects of Sound Therapy are apparent in our every day life. We experience the energizing effect of sound every time we hear music with a heavy beat. Just think of the last time you heard a favorite song and couldn’t help but to start dancing along. Sound Therapy is a powerful, effective treatment that uses evocative sounds produced by the Ancient Himalayan singing bowls and a gong to drastically reduce and eliminate stress, emotional or physical pain, and bring back the original frequency of health on the cellular level. It happens when we hear the sounds from the instruments and we attune ourselves to that in which our brain wave patterns instantaneously shift. We move from the engaged beta state into alpha, theta, and even delta – the states of deep relaxation, exceptional insight, deep healing and regeneration of the whole body.
Everything Vibrates... In the growing field of
“energy medicine,” it is well known that our universe is created through patterns of frequency. Science is now documenting what mystics of many traditions have known forever. Everything that exists in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual realms does so on a vibratory basis. This is obvious if you consider that electrons are always moving and vibrating.
What is Sound Therapy’s application? Sound Therapy has a wide spectrum of uses including: back pain, migraines, hyperactivity (ADHD), conception aid, injury recovery, pain management, aid for cancer prevention, and recovery.
Everything that exists consists of energy. Starting with the atom of a leaf, going through internal organs and finishing with an elephant – all of these are forms of energy vibrating with specific frequencies. Thoughts, feelings, and words are more subtle forms of energy. All these various forms of energy create a universal harmony in which they function separately, yet they contribute to the whole. The entire universe is in continuous motion. Treating our physical body like a smaller universe and observing it, we can see that every organ, blood circulation, breathing, beating of our heart, and any other process that occurs in it, has its individual rhythm. If a person experiences stress, fear, anger or anxiety over an extended period of time, these feelings, with their own specific rhythms, burden the system on so many different levels and change the healthy frequencies of a particular part in the body or organ that is the most sensitive to the pattern that they carry. As the result, the disharmony that occurs in the part of the body or organ finally manifests on the physical level as a disease or pain. However, depending on the person and a number of sessions, sound is a powerful tool in treating any disease. Discover the benefits behind sound therapy and mind visualization to achieve maximum health and well-being and having peace of mind knowing all is well. Sound therapy is structured around seven emotional centers which mirror our Chakras system. By creating new thought patterns and offering affirmations to counteract specific emotional weaknesses, we can activate each part of our bodies. It is obvious to anyone who listens to music that sounds play an important part in our emotional lives. What is less widely known is how music works to make us feel happy, tranquil, energized or even to facilitate healing. Most researchers into sound therapy agree that sound waves or frequencies are responsible for music’s ability to influence us and they believe that they may have therapeutic benefits that go far beyond the ability to alter our moods. And, they believe that the right frequencies used in the right combinations may be able to bring about biological changes that can help boost our immune system and even heal the body.

MUSIC
TOYA DELAZY: Pump It On, Edited by Athena Starr, Photo (R) by Jo Lance Latoya Nontokozo Buthelezi, known to many by her stage name Toya Delazy, is a South African singer, pianist, dancer, and performer from KwaZulu-Natal. She is currently signed to Sony Music Africa. A rising star on the American horizon, Delazy was nominated in the Best International Act category at the 2013 BET Awards. Her debut studio album, Due Drop, was supported by the singles "Pump It On", "Love Is in the Air", "Are You Gonna Stay?", "Heart" and "Memoriam." Upon its release, the album was acclaimed by both critics and fans internationally. Following the release of her debut studio album, Delazy also took home awards for Newcomer of the Year and Best Pop Album at the 2013 South African Music Awards (SAMAs). She has made a major impact on South African top 40 radio with the release of her aforementioned singles. Arcade Content’s Kyle Lewis directed Toya Delazy’s “Forbidden Fruit” music video, which has been hailed across the Twittersphere as “masterful,” “a work of art” and “daring… in the context of antigay politics in Africa.” “Forbidden Fruit” is the first single off Delazy’s second album, Ascension, which was recently released by Sony Music Africa. “I have written countless interviews explaining where I am from and what I plan to do,” says Delazy. “People from all over are trying to understand what sort of African I am, people trying to find answers, for what they have heard and seen from the straight-jacket nominee from Zululand. Well, alright here it is pure and bare: there isn’t much of a secret… I sing because it heals me. I have always enjoyed entertaining people, even if it’s myself in front of a mirror. I enjoy giving out positive energy and getting it back. I am a pianist and singer and I dance very well under the influence of good music… I am wild and sometimes irresponsible… but most of all I realize I just got this one shot at living and being happy… If my sound and music makes you buck out and get excited about living, let’s “Pump It On” together, ‘til the beat stops.”

From Russia with Talent: Singer SERGE
DIDENKO
By Nick Christophers Today’s acting and music industries are becoming more and more saturated with “wannabes” and cheap imitations. Most of this is due to the advancement of
technology. Nowadays, almost anyone with a laptop and minimal tech knowledge can release music or make a film. Yet there are those who have the talent to make their vision a reality. Serge Didenko is on the path to accomplish what he came to America to do. He is multi-talented individual with a clear cut mission to make the most of his talents in the music and acting fields. Coming from a foreign country is never an easy step, let alone attempting to conquer a field that is overly saturated. Although he found the English language to be a challenge, he soon mastered it nonetheless. When he moved to America, he came in contact with the Hip-Hop sound and was taken in by the rhymes, patterns, and grittiness of the sound. “I was always surrounded by Hip-Hop and I fell in love as soon as I touched down,” says Serge. “I knew I wanted to pursue it as soon as I heard Snoop Doggs’ Doggystyle album in the early ‘90s, then I became a big Tupac fan and so the journey began.” Serge soon began to arrange his own material and every chance he had, he would perform. His tenacity began to bear fruit when he had the opportunity to open for acts like J Cole, Fabulous, Big Sean, Mac Miller and Machine Gun Kelly. These small, yet significant milestones, enabled him to plant his own flag on the Hip-Hop map.
Serge would soon produce and release a Clinton Sparks self -produced mix tape entitled “Bag of Laundry To Ditch.” The mix tape opened new avenues for him as he toured the east coast gaining exposure and most of all, a fan-base. The tour led to receiving airtime from radio station JAMN 945. “I spent a lot of time promoting the mix tape and got it into the right hands and soon it was playing on several local and some out of state radio stations during its peak,” said Serge. “It’s really cool to hear yourself live on the radio, even better when people call/text you saying they were listening to you on the radio.” Not long after, Director Chris Petit came across Serge’s music and thought he would be a good fit for a film he was working on called Skinheads In Love. He went to the audition and got the part the first time out. Eventually, that role led to a part in an even bigger film. The new project was The Equalizer, with Oscar winner, Denzel Washington. Serge was more than honored to be able to work with such a high level talent as Denzel. A lot of his success is not only owed to his God given talent, but also to the Lau Lapides Company. The company’s mission is to develop artists in many areas, whether it is in acting or voice coaching. They are a “one stop shop” for anyone looking to tackle the entertainment world. Serge is currently on the move with new projects on the horizon. His new single, entitled “Instagramz,” was just released and the video was directed by John Rawlings Studios. The track is meant to be a trail of negative experiences and the title serves an ironic twist. The video also offers a meaningful message based on the world of HipHop. Serge is on a serious mission and intends on carrying it to the highest level. Keep up with Serge Didenko at sergedidenko.com/about/ or at www. laulapidescompany.com..

strong culture, he counteracted it with positive lyrics and energy. Through all of the trials and tribulations, he kept his head up and stayed focused on the greater things in life, like being on the big screen or stage. As a follow-up to his first album, Truth Be Told, which includes the title track single, and other notable titles such as “Dreamin,” “Life’s About” and “Forever True,” The Remedy is a strong continuation of his spiritual enlightenment and vision. “Clean lyrics, good vibes, inspiring and uplifting,” are all words described by listeners on his facebook site. All true to describe an amazing cd that is full of promise and positive praise.

Brooklyn’s In The House... Chances are if you live, work or play anywhere in the immediate vicinity of the five boroughs of New York: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, you have more than likely heard of The SLIM KINGS. The band generates the kind of raw aggression and soulful, bluesy angst one might hear behind closed doors of a Tom Petty-meets-Jeff Beck by-way-of-a-Kings Of Leon recording session. The Slim Kings have also established itself as one of the best, commercially viable groups to have emerged from this area of the country in a very long time. Vocalist/rhythm guitarist Michael Sackler-Berner, who founded The Slim Kings, originally teamed up with lead guitarist Henry Geller to form the band. The men have known each other since they were kids in elementary school; however, it was an initial connection through FaceBook that the two exchanged melodies and musical riffs, recorded on Geller’s i-Phone, which set the wheels-in-motion for everything to take shape. Later on, during the creative process of collaborating, Sackler-Berner contacted the very first drummer he had ever seen in concert, when he was only eleven years old, who just so happened to be Liberty Devitto, former member of Billy Joel’s band, to play on a session with him and Geller. Devitto listened to their music on-line and within 15 minutes called Sackler-Berner
With The
SLIM KINGS,
back, to let him know he was definitely in. The drummer, in turn, reached out to Andy Attanasio, who eventually joined The Slim Kings as their bassist. Considering The Slim Kings have only been performing together on stage for less than two-and-a-half years, it’s really hard to believe that these super-talented musicians, who play with the finesse and expertise of most musical veterans already twenty years in their tenure, have not been around for decades. They produce the kind of musical magic that, quite frankly, any musician worth his Converses wishes he could have created. When you have four members of a musical hierarchy, including Devitto, who has recorded and toured with international superstar Billy Joel for more than 30+ years, or Sackler-Berner, who has composed music for the hit shows, Sons of Anarchy and Law and Order, and Geller, who has opened for the likes of Etta James and Johnny Winter, there is absolutely no denying the realization that The Slim Kings are the epitome of Rock and Roll Royalty. The Slim Kings have released only two records in the course of their career. Their debut, Fresh Socks, was premiered during their very first ever, live gig, that took place at The Box, a burlesque club, on the lower East side, in New York City, on June 21, 2012. The band’s latest album, Dirty Socks, has spawned the enticing “My Waterloo,” a song which has found its way into radio market play lists, including those in Maine, Maryland
By-Sandra Castillo and New Mexico, and has also appeared on a Hurricane Sandy benefit-compilation album, Songs After Sandy, Vol. 2. “Dirty Minds,” a provocative slice of “not everything you hear and see is what it seems” aural nirvana, recently debuted on Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie,” while their “Wandering Eye” was part of the soundtrack for the popular hit television show, “Army Wives.” In November, 2013, The Slim Kings opened for ZZ Top, at the Paramount Theater, in New York City, and for Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes, at the State Theater, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, this past March. The band performs regularly at such local, hot spots as Hill Country, The Bowery Electric, The Trash Bar and the Metropolitan Room, all located in New York City. The Slim Kings also showcased their talents on the Artie Lange Show, where the comedic television host bantered with the band about various topics and Devitto’s time spent on the road with Billy Joel. If you like your music raw, no-holds-barred, the kind that is not afraid to get “down and dirty,” with just the right amount of Rock N’ Soul thrown in for good measure, then look no further than Brooklyn’s finest, The Slim Kings, to give you just what you need… For more information: www.slimkings.com.

VOYAGES TO ANTIQUITY…. Smooth Sailing To The Birth Of Civilization Text: Steven Kaplan Photos: Sharyn Weintraub
If you are looking for an alternative to large ship cruises, with all the hassles that go with it, such as long lines and getting shut out of tour excursions, then look no further than VOYAGES TO ANTIQUITY, where one can experience small ship cruising at its best. This one-fits-all smaller cruise line is all-inclusive, with amenities such as airfare, pre and post hotels, shore excursions, gratuities, food and beverages, and transfers to and from the ship. Voyages to Antiquity features large up-to-date cabins that can accommodate up to 350 passengers, including 26 single cabins, which you will never see on a large cruise ship. Antiquity cruises also includes a premiere spa and gym, three restaurants and lounges, and educational lectures on visiting ports. This historic and cultural cruise is full of adventure and history! My photographer and I recently experienced the fabulous 11 day excursion,“Those Who Seek Paradise,” sailing from Venice to Athens on the Aegean Odyssey. The first day we visited Venice, where we enjoyed two fabulous tours to St. Marks Square and the Basilica, and a very special champagne event at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, showcasing works of art from Picasso to Warhol. From there we sailed to Croatia to three different ports, including our favorite Dubrovnik, where we toured a 1,000 year old fort overlooking the Aegean Sea. From Croatia, we cruised through the magnificent Kotor Bay to the birth of civilization, visiting five stops in the Greek Islands: Corfu, Preveza, Ithaca, Nauplia, and Katakolon (Olympia), where we saw the birthplace of the Olympics, which dates back to 776 BC. The cruise ended in Athens with a tour of the Acropolis and the Parthenon, topping off an amazing journey, voyaging back to the beginning of time. For more information: www.voyagestoantiquity.com. FIESTA AMERICANA on the Riviera Maya, Mexico, By A. Brooks Bienvenida! Mexico! Arrival in Cancun, Mexico was quite memorable… Customs was rigorous and painstaking, but after a quick shot of tequila and a cerveza at the bareto outside the airport, I was finally on my way… destination Cozumel via Playa del Carmen. The local ADO Busline is a 45-minute ride between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and after a transfer, is just a 20-minute ride on the Ultra Mar Sealine passenger ferry to Cozumel. The island of Cozumel, internationally known for snorkeling and deep sea diving in Mexico, hosts many resorts and the Playa Azul Golf & Spa Resort is a romantic Mexican Caribbean paradise. The four-star, 50-room ocean view, boutique resort is cozy and exotic, with the best golfing greens on the island and a premiere spa, with therapies and treatments influenced by the ancient Mayan world. A relatively reclusive location, the closest hangout is across the street at a quirky little Mexican hotspot called La Cabana del Pescado (Lobster House) that is decorated with old time Hollywood film era memorabilia, kitchy Mexican art, other antique oddities and, great lobster. I am fortunate to be able to celebrate the annual Mexican independence celebration in Cozumel, held on the 16th of September, enjoying festivities that included fireworks and a parade. This date marks the beginning of the Mexican war of independence against the Spanish colonial government in 1810. The night before (15th), the President of Mexico (in Mexico City) rings the national bell and shouts three-fold “Viva Mexico” from the balcony to the people in the Plaza de la Constitution. Playa del Carmen, day or night, is an energetic hub of activity with bars, restaurants and shopping, all lining their famous 5th avenue (the main strip). The center of the plaza, adorned with a beautiful sculpture of mermaids, hosts tourist and locals alike, offering food, music, and art… with Mayan acrobats and dance ensembles. The town is alive! Time share hosts scurry around town constantly soliciting tourists, in some cases too much so. In return for a free trip to a favorite destination tour, they ask you to sit through a 90-minute time share presentation. In most cases, you will receive the proper reciprocation, but beware of unscrupulous hosts that fail to provide the promised trip.

There are many tourist excursions from Playa del Carmen, and the most popular is a visit to the archeological site of Tulum, a name derived
16
from a deep reverence for the sky, sea and earth. Discovered by the Spanish conquistadors, the first Mayan capital city and commercial port, is a fortress protected by sea and rock. Paradiso Beach is below the ruins and is truly paradise, with poetically placed boats on the beach and Mexican natives selling food, clothing and accessories. Other local attractions include swimming with the turtles, tubing in the caves, the XCaret: a jungle and history themed park by the sea, and Xel Ha: a zipliner and adventure waterpark. Playa nightlife is fun, fun, fun… hang-outs include Wet Willies, Senor Frogs, Dan’s Tequila & Sports bar (for all the ex-pat Americans looking for an American sports game) and Fat Tuesday, if you want to do shots from a surf board. Hotel Hacienda Real del Caribe, ideal for a quick overnight stay, is a cute boutique hotel with a pool in the lobby and authentic horse-back saddle stools at the bar. After a quick bus ride on the ADO I am back in Cancun, and happy to arrive at the Fiesta Americana! Located on the Zona Hoteleria in the Yucatan peninsula, the delux-ocean view room is an intoxicating experience, welcoming guests to an all - exclusive array of food, beverage and entertainment. FIESTA AMERICANA CONDESA CANCUN, a 20-year AAA Four Diamond rating resort from Grupo Posadas, is one of the best vacation club destinations in Cancun. Time share opportunities welcome some of the best priced gold star location packages within the IPO travel network. The Miiluma Spa is one of the most enticing locations in the resort, offering the Luna Azul exfoliation and body wrap, the Fiesta Miiluma facial, or the Moon Viiluma VIP beach massage, which precludes a romantic, private dinner for two on the beach with tiki torches. You may also want to check with the concierge to book a snorkeling adventure with nearby Aqua World, an all-day destination to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, or rent a catamaran to sail to the nearby isolated, Isla Mujeres. On-site at the seaside La Cevicheria, the most delicious items on the menu are the sea scallop ceviche, the shrimp tacos, served with authentic guacamole, salsa and chipotle, and the fresh fried fish of the day. Kambu Asiatico is the most romantic dining spot: with fire light and an enchanting ambiance; El Mexicana Restaurant is true to authentic island décor and a flavorful, regional Mexican menu; and Rosato Restaurante boasts an elegant atmosphere, with fine Italian cuisine. Each restaurant is designed with attention to detail and the best quality of service. Continued on page 50.

LIVE AQUA RESORT and Spa Cancun Redefines The
All - Inclusive Experience, with Gourmet Cuisines and Creative Presentations By Babbie De Derian
Live Aqua, one of six brands owned and managed by Groupo Pasadas, has reinvented thé all inclusive expérience, with innovatiive gourmet cuisines and premium wines and spirits, This is a resort that is all about awakening and enhancing the senses. My recent four-night stay delivered many memorable sensory surprises from a dedicated well-caring staff. There are several restaurants on-site to choose from, each designed with a different personality. The wide variety of food choices is impressive and innovatively plated and presented. We begin our mornings in Siete, feasting on a sumptuous breakfast buffet that includes a bountiful selection of Mexican specialties, fresh fruits, meats, cheeses and pastries. We gape in awe as a fast order cook builds the popular Big Boy. This oversized culinary concoction begins with a soft tortilla that is layered with grilled shredded pork, beef or chicken, an assortment of vegetables, grated cheese and spicy salsas. It is then topped with a fried egg, a drizzle of sour cream, and strips of crispy bacon. At night, Siete turns into a table-clothed elegant Mexican restaurant. After a few hours on the beach and in the pool, we head down to the Sea Corner in our bathing suits for tangy ceviche, tapas and frothy margaritas. Azur, a terraced ocean-front restaurant, specializes in fresh seafood and Mediterranean cuisine, with Latin and Asian influences. My favorite, the spicy chicken, is served with an array of piquant sauces and huge slices of lightly fried potatoes. A family of iguanas that live under the retaurant deck waddle out to make friends and bask in the sun. One doesn’t have to move far from the refreshing pools to satisfy any craving. Daily specials such as paella are cooked at poolside food carts, a parade of chefs pass afternoon treats, and thé flow of complimentary drinks is endless. Varenna, a casual Italian culinary corner that sits in the shade of a huge almond tree, serves yummy pizzas and pastas with spicy seafood, vegetable and meat toppings. Before dinner, we stop by the indoor sushi bar to design our own signature sushi dish, and then carry it out to a patio, along with a Mexican beer. The MB International Restaurant, an original concept of Miami Chef Michelle Bernstein, has refined thé art of

presenting molecular food, under the creative direction of Chef Fernando Zavala. Fernando, who developed the menu, was born in Mexico City and worked with Mikel Alonso and Bruno Oteiza at the “Biko” restaurant, rated one of the top restaurants in México, before relocating to Cancun. Fernando, recently promoted to Sous Chef Jr. at all of the restaurtants at Live Aqua, stops by our table to suggest a few house specialties, and then wows us with his spicy habinera soup, juicy succulent honey glazed short ribs and artistically plated coconut garlic shrimp. Monday night’s deluge of rain does not dampen our spirits or alter our plans to dine in the Hidden Garden Restaurant, tucked away down a path of lush, exotic plants. In fact, it enhances the tropical ambience of this candle lit hideaway. It is an ideal place for a romantic dinner or a special occasion, and tonight we are celebrating my daughter’s birthday. The Lama Dawa and Claudia, his Spanish interpreter, accept my invitation to join us, and we feast on a medley of Asian infused house specialties, ignoring the rains that flood the dirt floor beneath our bare feet. The staff seranades us with a rendering of happy birthday in Spanish; a waiter places a sheet of glass on the table, and then proceeds to surprise us with an intricate mandala made with food colorings and a dozen artisically placed bite size pastries. It is a festive evening, and we drink many bottles of icy, Mexican beer. Live Aqua was not my first all - inclusive vacation, but it was one of the best and most personable. It definitely suceeded in enhancing my senses and elevating my taste buds. LIVE AQUA Cancun is located at Blvd. Kukulcán Km. 12.5 | Cancún | Q. VILLAGIO ON THE PARK... Dining Remembered, By A. Brooks
My visit to VILLAGIO ON THE PARK was nostalgic at first, as I remembered long ago visiting the space that was once owned by baseball legend, Mickey Mantle. As a veteran New York writer and diner, I have visited many locations that have closed and reopened twice over, most with a new design, décor and of course, a name change. Villagio has kept up appearances… and I feel welcomed by the same revolving doors of long ago by my host Eddie, who has a wealth of information on the history of the location, as well as the origin of the Villagio name and the standards of the food and beverage. The wait staff and their attention to detail and service to customers, is exceptional. Alex Kalas and Thomas Billante, owners of a profusion of restaurants in Miami and one in Chicago, opened the new Villagio On the Park in Manhattan, as a refined Italian restaurant that allows al fresco dining with views of Central Park. Alex, who is always ready to welcome guests and answer questions on location, is a master restaurant ingenue. According to Alex, he and Thomas decided to open a restaurant in the “City” because “the many New Yorkers who have been to our restaurants in Miami have had wonderful dining experiences. Now they can be on their home turf and enjoy our authentic, fresh taste of Italy in one of New York City’s finest neighborhoods. ” The cuisine is Al Fresco Italian and Executive Chef Paul Johnston is a true culinary designer. I was fortunate to taste several dishes such as Zucca Zucchini flowers stuffed with smoked mozzarella and prosciutto, the veal parmigiana and the Brenzini. All exceptional dishes that complemented each other well. Other specialities include the

LOVE CAFE AND BAR Authentic Eastern European Cuisine By: Steven Kaplan - Edited by: Sharyn Weintraub When the Beatles sang “All You Need Is Love,” they must have been looking into the future because all one needs in a restaurant is the Love Café and Bar in Kips Bay, NYC. The 18 seat 700 square-foot restaurant serves authentic European cuisine, with signature crepes as its specialty, among many other dishes. My favorite was the crepe suzette, filled with strawberry preserves and a special spice made with brandy and citrus. Other specialities on the menu include the borscht soup and the chicken kiev, stuffed cabbage and goulash. And lets not forget the sumptuous desserts, with the house favorite being the apple cinnamon dessert crepe. There is also a juice bar, expresso bar and unique beers, wines and spirits from Eastern Europe served.

Love Cafe is owned by Margarita Abramov, who dedicated the restaurant to her grandmother, a holocaust survivor who used to make crepes for Margarita when she was growing up in Russia. “The name of the restaurant is from the love for my grandmother, love for feeding people and love for cooking with a smile and a heart,” said Margarita. There is no other restaurant in Manhattan that comes close to the delicious and mouth watering European cuisine served at Love Café. As they say in Russia... “Na Zdorovie”!! LOVE CAFE is located at 430 2nd Avenue, NY, NY. Telephone: 212-779-7300.

FIESTA AMERICANA, Continued from pg. 44 While some might say the swim-up pool bar might be the daily favorite at Fiesta Americana, night time frolicking is done at the lobby bar, which hosts evening performances, a DJ, dancing and a large screen for movies. A recent Michael Jackson show was especially entertaining, with some of his best songs and dances reenacted. The grand Kalmia is the staple of the resort, providing a breakfast and late-nite international dining buffet, along with the Tapas Bar that offers Flemenco music and Spanish tapas. A must-see excursion on your visit to the Mexican Rivera is the delux tour to Chichen Itzá, operated by Gomexico.com. The first of four stops is at one of the oldest towns in Mexico, Valladolid, where you can visit the Iglesia de San Gervasio, the oldest catholic church in the western hemisphere (1634), which holds a replica of Jesus interned within a glass esophagus. Another attraction is the picturesque sculpture garden and plaza, centered amidst Mexican colonial architecture, old mansions and vibrant local residents. The second stop is at the ancient Mayan world of the Artesanias Ebtun Chichen peoples; a tribal center of the Mayan culture, complete with a priest who provides poetry and ceremonial blessings to all that visit. Mayan elders provide lectures on the Mayan calendar, alphabet and numerical system that the people developed early on in their civilization and primitive stones they use today. Shopping is quite prevalent with specialized hosts, who will guide you to spend your American dollars that will support Mayan

school children’s education. A special shout-out to sexy Tatune - our Mexican midget guide and new friend. After enjoying a bountiful Yukatecan meal at Ik Kil Restaurant, the main stop on the tour was, of course, the Chichen Itzá Pyramid. One of the new seven-wonders of the world and the primary political center of Mayan culture back in the middle-ages, Chichen is now the oldest site in Mexico. El Castillo, the tallest and primary pyramid was dedicated to the god Kukulcan, where the premiere priests resided. 91 steps on each side of the pyramid and one on the altar total 365 steps, as is the number of days on the calendar. Other temples on-site included the Osarion, which hosted the Mayan athletic games and El Observatorio, where the sacrificial rites were executed. It’s interesting to note that the winner of the games was the one sacrificed and not the loser, who was the one who chopped off the winner’s head as an offering to the Gods. After a heated afternoon of shopping and touring the ruins of Chichen Itzá, a most welcome stop at the Cenote Ik Kil sinkhole provided swimming and diving for locals and tourists alike. Dormant volcanoes are plenty in the Yukaton peninsula of Mexico and are an awesome adventure, with diving and cave tours readily available as well. Mexico is a magical mixture of history, culture and celebration… I am happy to say this is true… I have lived it. Viva Mexico! For more information: www.fiestaamericana. com, www. ARRIBA GOLD Chocolate A Unique Tasting Affair, By Athena Starr
It was a unique tasting affair... pairing chocolate, wine, spirits and LIVE chocolate making (bean to bar)... the first event in the history of New York. All of the chocolate used was from a single origin in Ecuador, called Arriba Gold, the number one chocolate in the country. Working to set-up a contest among the top culinary schools and new talents working at unknown restaurants, Arriba Gold is searching for the next celebrity pastry chef... THE CHEF NOUVEAU. One of the participants, chef Binicio Salas, was on-site to bake the pastries at the tasting. Andre Mendoza, Founder & CEO of Arriba Gold, hosted the event, pairing each course with wine and spirits, explaining how and why each matched the specific pastry.
Andre Mendoza
The second part of the event focused on how chocolate is made (bean to bar). Using exactly the same machines that is used at the factory in Ecuador, but on a much smaller scale. There was also an interview with a farmer in Ecuador via Skype who answered questions about the cocoa harvest. For more information on Arriba Gold, the contest and future events or to order products: go to www.arribagold.com. Photos by Jo Lance.

3R TEQUILA
Makes its Debut In New York City!
New York, NY 2014 3R TEQUILA: The 2014 Silver Medal recipient at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Marco Gallegos, founded the 3R Tequila company in 2010 as a family business in his grandfather’s honor. Following a triumphant launch in Mexico and Sweden in 2013 and a successful trial in Australia, this unique brand of tequila is now being introduced in the U.S. with a series of taste events in New York City. 3R Tequila embodies the passion, boldness and freedom of Gallegos' grandfather Rafael and his true Mexican romantic adventure. Rafael started the 3R family ranch in Mexico after falling in love with his future wife Jesusita in 1949 and spiriting her away on the back of his horse. This daring seduction is vividly captured in the company logo and the dramatic illustration which is featured on every bottle of 3R Tequila. 3R is created from superior 100% blue agave, sourced from the producer's own fields, distilled and bottled at Fabrica la Marquesa located in Amatitan, Jalisco in the heart of the Mexican Tequila Valley. Available initially in its Blanco variety, it is created naturally without chemicals, fillers, or added colors and sugars, resulting in a crafted premium tequila of remarkable smoothness, purity and strength. Only the finest herbaceous and earthy agave plants are selected with the most distinctive agave flavor grown in the lowlands. They are cooked to perfection the old fashioned way, slow steamed in traditional masonry ovens. Each batch is
uniquely fermented to the music of violins and symphony orchestras to maximize the output of the agave sugar. "We wanted to throw away all conventional thinking in Tequila and break new ground by properly merging the old with the new and create something bold, distinctive, and unique," states Gallegos. “Not only did we end up creating a great Tequila, our efforts lead us to create a Mezcal like no other, that of which has never been seen before in New York. The perfect blend of heritage, tradition and modernity.” Now America can embrace this distinctive tequila experience already enjoyed in Mexico, Sweden, and Australia, and get introduced to the bolder side of Mezcal. The perfect way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo... 3R Tequila and 3R Mezcal! For more information, go to www.3rtequila.com or contact: Ken Simmons/Simmons Media at kens4544867@gmail. com.
