MadelynDelgado PORTFOLIO 2017
IN SEARCH OF A VOICE I am searching for my design voice to create memorable places. I explore new and innovative ways to connect a person to their environment; designing with value and meaning. Many memories reside in a space. The meaning of that place speaks to a person’s body, mind, and spirit. It is important to strengthen the experience by engaging a person through their senses. To continue down this path of discovery I must: Draw - as a way of understanding, Experience - to collect knowledge, Design - as a vehicle of exploration and expression.

RESEARCH AND DESIGN: MASON, OHIO COMMUNITY PARK BODY, MEMORY AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN JUNIOR YEAR MENTOR- DR. SERGIO SANABRIA 5 MONTHS RESEARCH 6 WEEKS DESIGN
CORWIN M. NIXON PINE HILLS LAKES PARK
Awarded a grant to conduct a research and design project the summer of my junior year. My research consisted of traveling for two weeks, studying historic landscape architecture and theories related to: topophila, memory, and human perception of their environment. Through this research, I came to the conclusion that the Corwin M. Nixon Pine Hills Lakes Park was lacking the presence of: -Culture -Organization -Elements that engage the senses -Emotional connection to the natural environment
Water Pavilion
The design explores ways to solve this disconnect and improve the experience of the landscape by engaging the user emotionally, haptically, and psychologically with their environment.
Walking Bridge - West Walking Bridge- East
At the conclusion of the project, I proposed a design to the Parks and Recreation Board of the Corwin M. Nixon Pine Hills Lakes Park in Mason, Ohio.

WATER PAVILION The pavilion interacts with the water levels throughout the seasons. When the water is low, people can engage with the pavilion. At high levels water flows onto the structure and presents itself as a sculptural motif of the natural lake environment. The flexible wooden structure sways with the wind and the waves of the lake.

WALKING BRIDGE-EAST END The walking bridge interacts with one of the main visual axis of the park. Inspired by the organization of English and Italianate gardens, circulation elements in the design constantly pull a user on and off an axis. This will entice a person by offering glimpses of what is left to discover and making connections with the current experience and the places left to discover.

WALKING BRIDGE- WEST END The west end of the walking bridge expresses another quality of the natural landscape. The height of the structural columns subtly reflect the depth of the lake bed. While a person experiences the water from above, they understand the topography below the water surface.

CONAGRA BRANDS HEADQUARTERS CHICAGO, IL WAYFINDING AND SIGNAGE STRATEGY AND DESIGN 5 MONTHS ANTHONY PRINCE AND SMITA MODI
CONAGRA BRANDS HEADQUARTERS
In 2016 Conagra brands moved all their smaller branches to the Merchandise Mart, located in Chicago, IL. They were seeking a signage, brand, and interior design that spoke to the city of Chicago and connected their employees to the rural origins of their products. We considered these qualities in the function of our wayfinding system and the form of our signage.

SIGNAGE DESIGN The design of the signage compliments the materiality of the interior space. The design stays true to the material through the fabrication. The materials relate to both the city and rural qualities. Metal is used for its strength and sharp lines. Wood is cut and dyed to show its natural form and textural quality. Acrylic is used for the transparency and flexibility. All the materials contrast visually but compliment each other in their function and form. MEETING ROOM/OFFICE SIGN PLACED ON SITE 1/2"

WICKER PARK RESIDENCE
This house, located in the heart of Wicker Park, is one of the oldest buildings on the block. The owners requested a full luxury renovation of their three story plus basement home. The historic elements of this house were carefully restored in an effort to bring the house back to its original glory. I was involved in site visits, as built drawings, design process, building code research and construction documentation.
FRONT FACADE
The clients were interested in restoring the windows, front entry and any weathered stone work in the facade.
FIRST FLOOR PLAN- FRONT 22
REAR FACADE
The back of the house is a woodframe and siding addition. A second entry stairwell was created to meet fire code for the rental units located on the third floor and basement. New dormers in the attic provided additional rooms for the tenant spaces. A sunroom with a conservatory roof on the first floor brings light into the family room and kitchen of the house.

RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE - MIKE SHIVELY ARCHITECTURE 9 MONTHS MIKE SHIVELY
MASTER BATH RENOVATION
During my time at MSA, I also worked on an interior renovation of a master bathroom. The client’s existing bathroom had unusable space, small closets, small windows, and outdated fixtures and finishes. By removing the partition walls, we were able to create a large master closet and a spacious and sunny master bath. Framing the toilet and shower area is a metal and glass partition that provides a dramatic backdrop for the soaking tub.

PRIVATE GARDEN
The journey through this garden is a series of expanded views and compressed intimate spaces. It begins on the first floor balcony. A view of the entire garden is seen as an introduction. The indirect path continues down a narrow stair. The water feature sounds change in volume as it is experienced above and deafens in the stairwell. The view opens at the base of the stair. Trellis columns add rhythm and verticality to the space. The water features are now fully experienced. Cascades are juxtaposed with a calm reflection pool. Energy is experienced near areas of circulation and stillness in areas of repose. Dolomitic limestone, in a warm grey hue is used for the paving and water features. Different plant life is used to add density, texture and color to the space. Moon flower vines climb on the trellises and dramatically bloom at night releasing a romantic scent. The box wood hedges add volume to the space and is balanced by dense sansevieria on the opposite wall. Water lilies grow in the reflection pool. This inviting garden is an exterior room that can be experienced with all the senses.

PUBLIC GARDEN
This plaza could exist behind an art museum, or as a shared space between two buildings. Volume, proportions, texture, light and shadow were considered in this composition. Dark grey concrete is used for the paving and planters. Sharp lines are softened by wood details and plant life. A reveal at the base of the planters is filled with gravel and Acorus gramineus which let off a licorice scent when brushed. This softens the connection of the vertical planes with the horizontal. Large areas of concrete are balanced with areas of lawn and sunlight. Wood is used to mark thresholds and changes in elevations. It also offers locations to sit and gather. The planters become sturdy volumes that organize the space and contrasts with the seemingly light weight volume of the water feature, which gently cascades into the void that frames it.

PEN AND INK IN A BLINK
Our illustration business began after winning “The Great Seal Book Contest” offered by Miami University. The contest provided us with the opportunity to create twelve drawings of iconic buildings on Miami University’s main campus to be published in Miami’s Great Seal Book. This book is on permanent display inside the Great Seal located in the new Armstrong Student Center. Images are transformed into personalized and original pen and ink drawings and note cards. Prints and stationary are available online and at the University bookstore.
