LITERARY COMMITTEE'S READING SERIES & LOUISIANA POET LAUREATE by Gina Ferrara

The Literary Committee of Delgado Community College is pleased to announce that John Warner Smith will read at Delgado as part of the Literary Committee's Reading Series in the Spring of 2020 on Wednesday, March 25th at 12 noon in the Lac Maurepas Room in Building 22. John Warner Smith is the state’s newest Poet Laureate and will serve his term from 2019-2021. He was appointed by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and Governor John Bel Edwards and has made history by being the first African American male to be appointed Poet Laureate of Louisiana. Mr. Smith has published four poetry collections: Muhammad’s Mountain (Lavender Ink, 2018), Spirits of the Gods (ULL Press, 2017), Soul Be A Witness (MadHat Press, 2016) and A Mandala of Hands (Kelsay Books-Aldrich Press, 2015). His fifth collection, Our Shut Eyes: New & Selected Poems on Race in America is forthcoming this year from MadHat Press. Smith’s poems have appeared in numerous literary journals across the country, including Ploughshares, Callaloo and the North American Poetry Review. Much of his work draws upon African American history and his personal experiences of growing up and living in the South. Delgado Community College's Literary Committee began the Delgado Reading Series in 2017. It has become an important part of the city's literary fabric. Each semester, the series hosts acclaimed writers who showcase their work in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. The intent is to introduce Delgado students, faculty, and staff to the diverse array of literary talent within the state. Featured readers read from their work, talk about their craft and answer questions from the audience with refreshments served after the discussion. Speakers thus far have included Jarvis DeBerry, Malaika Favorite, Maurice Ruffin, J. Bruce Fuller, and Yuri Herrera.
