Which country to set up world’s highest altitude gravitational wave telescopes in Tibet – China Among Important International Current Affairs, China is setting up the world’s highest altitude gravitational wave observatory in a Tibet prefecture close to Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India.

However, the telescope will detect and gather precise data on primordial gravitational waves in the Northern Hemisphere. The construction work of the first telescope code-named Ngari No.1 as part of first phase has started. It is expected to be operational by 2021.

Also, it is located at located 5,250 meters above sea level, 30kms south of Shiquanhe Town in Ngari Prefecture at China’s border with India. In the second phase series of telescopes, code-named Ngari No. 2 will be set up about 6,000 meters above sea level.

The high altitude of Ngari observatory provides clear sky to detect tiny twists in cosmic light and has minimal human activity. This observatory will be among the world’s top primordial gravitational wave observation bases, alongside the South Pole Telescope and the facility in Chile’s Atacama Desert.

SC wants what in EVMs for fair elections – VVPAT Among Important National Current Affairs, The Supreme Court has finally reiterated the necessity to implement the Vote Verifier Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in electronic voting machines (EVMs) to ensure 100% transparency in elections.

However, this is the second time the Supreme Court has directed Election Commission (EC) for the implementation of VVPAT in EVMs. In the year 2013, SC had directed the EC to introduce VVPAT in a phased manner for 2014 general elections. SC had also observed that VVPAT will ensure free and fair polls and help in sorting out disputes.

Though, in response the EC had informed the apex court that the VVPAT can be introduced in a phased manner.

New Ginger species with medicinal properties discovered in - Andamans Among Important National Current Affairs, Scientists from Botanical Survey of India (BSI) have discovered a new species of Zingiber which is commonly referred as ginger from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Power Grid Corporation of India inked MoU with - Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority On 25th January 2017, Central Power Sector PSU Power Grid Corporation of India inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA). Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Distribution Co (UAE) Saeed Al Suwaidi and Executive Director- International Business of POWERGRID Mr Anil Mehra in the presence of IS Jha, CMD of POWERGRID. As per MoU both companies will work together in the fields of capability development and training in the field of Operation & Maintenance (O&M), Asset Management, Project Management, Power Transmission & Distribution, etc.

ADWEA will also be assisted by POWERGRID to set up an advanced World Class Capability Development institute in UAE. Name of Russian ambassador to India who passed away - Alexander Kadakin On 26th January 2017, Russian ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin was passed away after a brief illness. He was 67 years old and he held this position from 2009.

He played a major role in ties of India and Russia. He was fond of Indian Culture and Language. He also authored and translated many books from English and Hindi.

Cryogenic Engine for Upper Stage of GSLV Mk III was successfully tested by - ISRO On 25th January 2017, The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully tested indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage for GSLV Mk III rocket. It is scheduled to launch GSAT-19 during first quarter of 2017.

Do You Know :  Cryogenic engines are generally used in the upper stage of a rocket launch as they offer maximum thrust to a launcher vehicle.  Cryogenic upper stage is the most powerful upper stage developed by ISRO and uses Liquid Oxygen and Liquid Hydrogen propellant combination.

As of now Banwarlal Purohit is serving as Governor of Assam while Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya is serving as Governor of Nagaland.

Name of Exercise of Indian Navy which began on 24th January 2017 - TROPEX 17 On 24th January 2017, Annual Theatre Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX) of Indian Army began at Western Seaboard. This is scheduled to held till fourth week of February 2017. In this excercise Ships and aircraft of both the Western and Eastern Naval Commands are participating and this excercise is aimed at testing the combat readiness of the combined fleets of the Indian Navy and the assets of the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard.

Who has been appointed as Chairman of African Union Commission - Moussa Faki Mahamat On 30th January 2017, Chad's Moussa Faki Mahamat was elected as the Chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission.

She will be first woman to lead AU and will be succeeding Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma of South Africa.

Who is head of Committee of Administrators to run BCCI - Vinod Rai On 30th January 2017, Supreme Court (SC) appointed Vinod Rai as the head of four-member Committee of Administrators to run Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Important to mention here that Vinod Rai was former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).
