HIGH SCHOOL EDITION Directors Notes Chicago is a 1975 American musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. Set in Chicago in the jazz age, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same title by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, about actual criminals and the crimes on which she reported. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the "celebrity criminal". How things change, but stay the same. Was CHICAGO one of the first versions of reality programming? Reality television is nothing new in today's society. From the start of hidden cameras in Candid Camera in 1948, to putting civilians in a controlled setting in The Real World in 1992, the lifestyles and personalities revealed in reality television are endless. Now, anyone can get a behind-the-scenes look at the life of an Alaskan fisherman or what it's like to be a sister wife. Celebrity families are on top when it comes to today's most popular reality television content. As someone who has never (truth!) watched reality television, and who has questioned why our society spends so much time and energy invested in the lives of the rich and famous, working on Chicago and discovering its more subtle messages, I can almost begin to understand why people are so attracted to the genre. While the story is important, it’s the music and the dancing that make CHICAGO great. In CHICAGO we meet Bob Fosse. One of the most influential men in jazz dance history, Bob Fosse created a unique dance style that is practiced in dance studios throughout the world. The award winning dancer choreographed his first musical film in the 1950s, but his talents really came to the fore in the late 1960s and early ‘70’s It was then, that his trademark style of dance-full of signature moves, like the sideways shuffle, jazz hands (!) and turned-in knees–became a staple of a new kind of musical. You will see those influences in our production, too. The music is inspired by the jazz of the 1920’s era, with a vaudevillian theme. You have your classic jazz in the piece All That Jazz, , the circus like feel of Razzle Dazzle, and the ragtime feel of We Both Reached for the Gun. Although all of the styles are different, they fit soundly in the vaudeville style. The variety makes for great entertainment. As we welcome you to our brand new, beautiful auditorium please sit back and relax and enjoy our production of CHICAGO-High School Edition!
