A message from the Executive Director of SkillsUSA Rhode Island, Joshua Klemp, CSD Over the years I have had the privilege of watching so many students grow and learn through their experience in SkillsUSA. We have had students win national medals, been elected to national office and even earn full tuition scholarships to great colleges/universities. Each and every time we have had those successes, I am proud to say, "That student is from RI!"; whether I have known them or not. That being said, I have never been more proud of our teachers and students as I am during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our members have exhibited all the essential elements of the SkillsUSA Framework. They have exhibited adaptability/flexibility, responsibility and the job specific skills that ensure that they are job ready, day one. Thank you to our Advisory Board for their support of the Rhode Island Association of SkillsUSA, Inc. Thank you to the Superintendents, Principals and Directors of the school districts that support SkillsUSA RI with the resources needed to fully provide access for ALL students that want to participate in SkillsUSA. Thank you to the teachers that actively teach the Career Essentials curriculum, promote our events and go above and beyond to support our students. You are some of the finest examples of educators that our state has to offer. We rely on hundreds of volunteers from business, industry and education. I appreciate their support for SkillsUSA and delivering high level and rigorous events that mirror "real-world" experiences. Our state officer team has been amazing this year and they have represented all of members at the highest level. They are a fun group of young people that are going to be successful and I look forward to seeing their achievements. Finally, I would like to thank members of the core team. They are always working behind the scenes to ensure that our students have an amazing experience. The core team includes: Henry Hatcher, Craig Reilly, Amanda Metzger, Christine Sullivan, Brooke Gatchell, Amanda Crawley, Joe Contreras, Josh Davis, Austin Stawicki and the alumni that are attending this evening. Thank you all for supporting SkillsUSA Rhode Island during the 2021-2022 year. We look forward to an amazing membership year in 2022-2023 and we look forward to your continued support. - Josh SkillsUSA, Champions at Work: United as One

2022 SkillsUSA Rhode Island Career & Technical Educators of the Year

Mrs. Regina Hogan, Graphic Communications Cranston Area Career & Technical Center Regina began her career at the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center as a technical assistant in Graphic Communications program. She continued her passion for teaching when she accepted a position as a graphic design instructor at the William M. Davies, Jr. Career and Technical High School. Then she came back to Cranston when the opportunity to be the graphic communications teacher became available. Since becoming the instructor for the program she has had several state winners in the SkillsUSA RI Championships. Her colleague Edd Spidell describes Regina as, "the consummate professional, who stays on top of technology for her students to be able to advance their skills. She is a role-model for her students as well, getting to bring out the best in each one, polishing those "diamonds in the rough ''. She brings the theory into practice, as witnessed by her and students completing the Water Fire detailing project with great, positive results." Congratulations Mrs. Hogan!

2022 SkillsUSA Rhode Island Career & Technical Educators of the Year

Mr. Andrew Aldrich, PLTW Pre-Engineering Burrillville High School Since SkillsUSA's inception at BHS, Mr. Aldrich has been on board and encouraged participation to his students as well as his colleagues. He took a step back from other event, which he and his students have numerous trophies for over the last decade, to take a shot at a new competition, Urban Search and Rescue. Mr. Aldrich was able to assemble 3 teams which in turn earned them Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at the state level and 5th nationally in 2021. When it comes to giving students opportunities for growth and excellence, “Aldy” is always on board and eager to jump in both feet first. Aldy’s competitive spirit has garnered a community of pride in the CTE culture at Burrillville. Aldy has been an innovator as well as an integral part of the success of CTE and STEAM integration for K-12 students. He developed, coordinated, and executed a summer STEAM program that included 75 K-5 students and 25 high school students/volunteers which was an enormous success! The high school students would mentor teams of the K-5 students and concluded with a “Register Rush” robotics competition. He is always looking for new community partnerships and spends his free time “scheming” as to the school can make all of the CTE programs more successful, Members of the Burrillville community know Aldy as a passionate, hardworking, caring, and selfless instructor that has gone above and beyond to ensure the success of his students. Congratulations Mr. Aldrich!

2022 SkillsUSA Rhode Island Advisor of the Year

Mr. Earl Read, Criminal Justice Regional Career & Technical Center at Coventry High School Earl Read has re-invigorated the SkillsUSA Chapter at the Regional Career & Technical Center at Coventry High School. In the 4 or 5 years that Earl has been at Coventry High School we have seen a continued growth in membership of SkillsUSA and also the very positive energy and responses shown by the students in both SkillsUSA and his Criminal Justice classes. Earl has made many community and organizational connections with the RI Court System as well as local police departments. He brings his expertise and many years as a Warwick Policeman to his classes and his students benefit from his love of the Law & Public Safety Career Cluster and the many Judges, Lawyers and Police Officers that visit his class for presentations and also class field trips to the RI ACI and RI Supreme Court Tours. Colleagues have witnessed his efforts for SkillsUSA fundraisers at Applebees and at the school operated restaurant, The Knotty Oak Room. He and his SkillsUSA Chapter have sponsored annual gift giving for needy children in the community through the Christmas Toy Drive. Earl is an excellent teacher, SkillsUSA Advisor and very respected member of the Coventry High School Family. Congratulations Mr. Read!

2021 - 2022 SkillsUSA Chapter Excellence Program Recipients The CEP recognizes achievement as it relates to the integration of the SkillsUSA Framework into chapter program of work activities. As a chapter’s yearly action plan, the program of work is at the heart of student learning and employability development. By using the Framework as a guide, chapters have a blueprint for creating relevant activities that encourage participation and foster an understanding of student learning attained during each activity. The Framework’s focus on intentional learning turns the program of work into more than just a planning tool. Using the Framework, the program of work becomes the vital conduit that links students to the application of personal, workplace and technical skills demanded by industry. The SkillsUSA trifecta for student success!
