from amanda In my opinion, entrepreneurs are some of the most inspring and interesting people. Their stories of vision and hard work, trial and error, and failures before success have always intrigued me. I love to read about women who have not only dreamed of working for themselves but who are doing so successfully. In this issue I am excited to share with you interviews with two such women: Elizabeth Johnson of Pretty Smitten and Mandy Kellogg Rye of Waiting on Martha.They share with us their style and business savvy on pages 10 and 20. Don’t miss it! Fall has arrived and this issue is full of great ideas for embracing the season. When did you open your Etsy shop and what inspired you to do so? I opened my Etsy shop in 2009 after the birth of my first child. I have always known that I wanted to do something creative and I realized that it was the perfect time to take the plunge! Etsy makes it very easy to start a business. I was able to start slowly and really develop my brand into what it is today. How would you describe your design aesthetic? We offer designs that take traditional elements, such as the polka dot and Greek key pattern, and add a modern, preppy twist with design options like our signature rugby stripe. We love to incorporate chic, new color combinations to reflect current trends.
What most inspires your designs?

I find the most inspiration from interior design and fashion. I love seeing a pattern or color combo on a pillow, painting or dress and then bringing to life again in my own designs. A simple stripe pattern can inspire a new design.
What was the greatest challenge you faced during your first year in business?
What is unique about Pretty Smitten? Pretty Smitten is unique because we offer customers a truly customized experience. Our Pretty Smitten Design Staples allow the customers to build their own unique design by choosing colors, design elements and monogram style. We also offer some of our favorite color and pattern combinations on each product, which is great for the customer who wants a quick buying experience by relying on our
My greatest challenge in my first year of business was simply figuring out how to run a real business. I started designing and listed items on Etsy almost immediately. As sales increased and I got busier and busier, I realized I still needed to set up the back end of the business. There’s a lot of accounting and paperwork that goes along with starting your own business and it took time to wrap my head around that part. What has been your most exciting sale or learning experience since starting your business? I think some of my most exciting sales come during the holiday season. I have families that have come back year after year

of the best advice “ Some I’ve ever received is to for their Christmas cards and gifts. It’s so fun to hear from them again and it’s awesome to know that they trust Pretty Smitten to make their holidays special. What is the best business advice you’ve received? Some of the best advice I’ve ever received is to simply trust myself. Trust my design aesthetic, trust my abilities, and trust that I know what is best for my business. Can you share about a business risk you took since starting Pretty Smitten? What came of it? One of the biggest risks I took was discontinuing my party line. It consisted of hand assembled party items like cupcake toppers, favor tags and bag toppers. It was adorable and well loved by both myself and customers, but as we added two more babies
to our family, I quickly realized it took more time than I was able to give. I was afraid to lose the loyal customer base and took a risk to do what is best for my own life balance. But you never know, maybe someday I will decide to add it back into the line! What does a typical work day look like for you? With three children under the age of five, there is rarely a typical day! I’m mostly a stay at home mommy and I work during nap times and at night. Two days a week I have help and those are the days I can really focus on Pretty Smitten. One of these days is devoted to packing and shipping orders. The other I try to reserve for new design work, photographing products and new business. Of course every day I’m responding to customers and fulfilling new orders. It’s a little hectic but

How do you stay connected to your customers? I try to respond to my customers inquiries as quickly as possible. I think customer service is the number one thing responsible for building trust and loyalty for my brand. And my favorite social media tool is by far Instagram. Photos are just fun and I love being able to ‘meet’ customers and share glimpses into my life. How do you balance home life with work life? (Especially being a mom!) It can be a challenge! But the one thing I always try to do is to separate work and mommy time. When I’m playing with my kiddos and taking care of them, I don’t want them to feel like I’m always checking my email. And when I’m working I want to be as efficient as possible. Separating the two

as much as possible keeps me feeling less scattered, more focused, like a better mom and a better business owner. What has been the most rewarding part of owning a small business? The most rewarding part by far is getting to do what I love without sacrificing time with my family. My interaction with customers is also incredibly rewarding. I have customers that come back again and again...for gifts, for themselves, for holidays... and they’ve become friends. To see their names pop up in my orders or inbox always makes me smile!

Can you recommend any books or resources to aspiring entrepreneurs? The team over at Launch Her is great! They have consultants available to speak on multiple business topics. I’ve spoken with consultants for both marketing and wholesale advice and have gotten some really great tips. Sometimes it’s also just great to talk out your plan, as it really helps to organize your ideas and get focused. What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own Etsy shop? Take time in the beginning to plan: Get your product line in order, know what you want to
start with and even where you can expand to in the future. And start managing accounting and finances right away! Trust me, it’s no fun to play catch up. What are some of your favorite Etsy shops? A Little Lady Shop: Adorable hair bows and headbands for girls. Parima Creative Studio: Art prints and originals at great prices. The Caramel Jar: Super yummy caramels!

Can you tell us a little about your online shop and blog? Waiting On Martha is the ultimate online source for creating a beautiful everyday. I launched the blog and online boutique in 2012 to share my obsessions in home décor, entertaining, food and drink, and fashion. What is the most rewarding part of owning your own business? That it’s my business! It all started with just a thought back in 2012 and continues to grow each and everyday. Reflecting on where it all started and where it is today, I have such satisfaction in knowing that I created and grew Waiting On Martha by working harder
than I ever have in my life. I just can’t find the words to describe this feeling of accomplishment! What does a typical work day look like for you? As an entrepreneur, each day is totally different. A “typical” work day for me begins at 7:30 a.m. and comes to a close around 2 a.m., Monday through Saturday. Since I toggled between the blog and the online boutique, my daily tasks vary from design work in PhotoShop, inventory, customer service, writing posts, order fulfillment and shipping, partnerships with brands, editorial styling, sourcing new brands and products, photo sessions with Rustic White, forecasting media
activities with my publicist, to recipe development. Somedays I’ll be shooting with a magazine for 12 hours, somedays I’ll be consumed by my email inbox and somedays I’m busy mixing cocktails at 8 a.m. If there’s one thing that’s consistent every day, it’s dinner with my husband and daily walks with my dog, Addison. When setting-up your workspace, what was most important? That it had to be functional. When I started, I had big plans for a particular area of the office, but when it came down to it, it turned into shelving for inventory.

What items did you splurge on? Save on? I splurged on the big pieces: My chandelier, wallpaper, and custom spindle chairs. I saved on the art/ prints and my shelves (all from Ikea). What is your favorite thing about your workspace? It’s all mine—and completely me! Currently my office is at home and it is the one space that I made my own and didn’t need input on its design for anyone else. Hence the wallpaper...which I adore. Is there anything you would change about your workspace? If so, what? So many things! I’ve already begun plotting my next office

space. In my next space, I’ll need a lot more room for inventory, and I wouldn’t do black, as it shows every speck of dust, knick, everything! What tip(s) can you share for keeping yourself as efficient as possible? Focus on what you’re doing and on one thing at a time. Distractions can pull you away from the task at hand, so if I’m focused on something, I’ll keep my email inboxes and social media pages closed. Another tip I have is to just get started. Don’t procrastinate! We all get overwhelmed by our to-do lists, but instead of staring at it, worrying about how you’ll possibly get it all done, just start doing.
What tip(s) can you share for balancing work and personal life? Balance is definitely something that I’m still trying to figure out and was much easier when I didn’t own my own business. When it’s your name on the door, it can be consuming. But there’s one thing that I do well when it comes to balance: I work hard and I play hard. When I disconnect, I really disconnect! I live in the moment and don’t worry what’s going on in the office. Now, I just need to work on disconnecting more often! When not at your desk, you can be found... In the kitchen cooking, listening to music and drinking wine.

SUPPLIES For one greenhouse, you'll need the following: Hot glue gun Paint in a color of your choice Five (5) 10" lengths of twig (or dowel) Four (4) 8" lengths of twig Eight (8) 5" lengths of twig Pots, any variety (jiffy pots were used here) Plants, any variety
STEP ONE Glue two sets of rectangles using the 10” and 8” lenghts
STEP TWO Create the 'walls' by adding four of the 5" lengths to connect the two rectangles

STEP THREE Attach the remaining 5" lengths with the last 10" lengths to create the 'roof'.
STEP FOUR Fill pots with inexpensive plants from the nursery to create the greenery inside the houses. (Fun tip from Emma: instead of decorative plants, consider using herbs that complement your meal. Guests may help themselves throughout the dinner party.)

INGREDIENTS 1 cup almonds or 5 ounces blanched almond meal 1/3 cup sorghum flour 1 teaspoon xanthum 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 cup powdered sugar 2 tablespoons poppyseeds 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/3 cup coconut oil 1/2 cup butter 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 5 large egg whites 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
DIRECTIONS 1. Spread almonds out on a large baking sheet and place in a 350 degree oven for 10-12 minutes or until they begin to smell nutty. Set aside to cool. While almonds cool, melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Set aside to cool. (*If you have almond meal, skip this step and add directly to food processor with powdered sugar to combine*) 2. Measure powdered sugar Into a large food processor and slowly add in almonds. Pulse into a flour. Once mixture is
fine and combined well, add in sorghum flour, xanthum gum, cinnamon and nutmeg. When mixed well,pour the flour mixture to a large mixing bowl. 3. Mix 5 egg whites and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar on high in a stand mixer. Leave for 5-7 minutes or until mixture forms stiff peaks. In the meantime, add coconut oil, butter, vanilla and poppyseeds to the flour mixture. Use a rubber spatula to mix until well combined.
4. Once eggs have reached stiff peaks, fold the whites into the batter with a rubber spatula. Mix carefully and fold until well combined. Spread batter ontto a large greased cake or pie pan and place in a 350 degree oven. Bake for 1 hour or until top is golden brown rotating the pan halfway through baking. Use the toothpick test in the middle of the cake to make sure it’s fully cooked. Cool for 20 minutes before serving. Top cake with powdered sugar and fresh cinnamon and serve!

INGREDIENTS 1 short crust pastry or frozen pie crust 1 Bramley apple (or other cooking apple) 2 Granny Smith apples 50 grams raisins 2 tablespoons honey 150 grams plain flour (plus a little extra) 1 teaspoon cinnamon 75 grams granulated sugar 75 grams unsalted butter, cut into cubes (plus a little extra) 50 grams mixed nuts, roughly chopped 5 large egg whites 2 tablespoons granulated sugar DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 180째C/350째F and grease and flour baking dish. 2. Roll your pastry about 5mm thick and place in your dish leaving a little pastry hanging over the sides. Using a lump of unused pastry, push the pastry into the corners of the dish. Using pastry to do this will reduce the likeliness of the pastry case ripping. 3. Cover the pastry with a layer of parchment paper and fill with baking beads (or uncooked rice). Note: After

pastry is baked, use a sharp knife to carefully cut off the excess pastry from around the rim of the dish. Doing this after the crust is baked allows the pastry to shrink down the sides of the dish during baking. 4. Bake for 15 minutes in the middle of the oven, then remove the baking beads and parchment and bake another five minutes. 5. Mix together the flour, sugar and cinnamon. Add the butter and rub it into the flour mixture until it forms a sandy tex-
ture. Stir in the nuts. Set aside. 6. Peel, core and slice the apples and mix with the honey and raisins. Pour the sweetened fruit into the baked piecrust and top with the spiced crumble topping. 7. Bake for 40 minutes in the middle of the oven until the top is golden brown. Serve hot or cold with ice cream, whipping cream, or on its own. Serves 8.

hen decorating her two-yearold’s room, Marianne Brown of White + Gold Design, brought in items that gave a sense of nostalgia and cleanliness. Subdued color creates an environment of charm and calm and infusing personal touches adds meaning to the space. Marianne’s favorite feature of Eva’s room is the newest feature in her room - her Pottery Barn Everywhere Chair and cute wicker basket that holds her books. She created a little reading corner for Eva and often finds her in her comfy little chair looking at the pictures in her books and pretending to read the story. When Marianne bought the chair she never realized that one of Eva’s favorite spaces would be a place to sit and read. It’s Marianne’s favorite thing to see!

Their Story
From the Bride: Although we grew up less than three miles apart, the internet actually brought us together. Greg and I met a couple of weeks after eHarmony matched us and we knew quite quickly we were perfect for each other. On our wedding day, it was most important to us that our guests be able to almost tangibly feel the love we have for one another. We also wanted to put our own romantic but fun twist on every last detail. Viaggio Estate and Winery was the perfect backdrop for our dream wedding.The ceremony was held outside, under the trees on the Mokelumne River. The wedding party was made up of close family and the ceremony seats were set up in such away that there were two aisles so that everyone could sit a bit closer to the action. Instead of lighting a unity candle, we wanted to do something we hadn’t seen before. We got two old pieces of rope and literally “tied the knot”. We now have it hanging in our home to remind us that once the knot is tied, it will only get stronger when pressure is applied. Writing our

own vows was important to us but we wanted them to be cohesive. We came up with half sentences together that we finished separately and decided not to share with each other until the ceremony. For example, “ Your love has changed me because...” A few humorous questions were mixed in as well. Such as “I love you even though you.....” and “I’ll always let you think that....” The reception was a continuation of fun and romance. We placed wedding photos of our parents and grandparents on the welcome table to remind us where (and who) we came from. Our guestbook was a tree which we invited our guests to “Leaf their Thumbprint”.This work of art now hangs in our living room and reminds us of all those who came to share in our special day. Our head table was placed in the center of the room and the bridal party (including parents and dates) sat around this table. Guest tables were surrounding the head table so everyone felt they had a close seat. To finalize the evening, our guests were given sparklers to light while we ran through for the final farewell.
