EDITOR’S LETTER Now that we’ve started exploring this universe, Mid-century is like an addiction. We are never too tired to explore more and more about the 40s, 50s, and 60s of the 20-century. We want to understand the style and to experience these times like we were there somehow.
From fashion to interior design, everything about the Mid-century Era is magic. However, we still not ready to abandon the last trends or to stop mixing mid-century and modernity. We really can’t help it. This 3rd Edition of our Trendzine is again a tribute to the Mid-century Modern Style. And this will never change. While developing this editorial, we found ourselves reminiscing and exchanging stories. We did not plan it, but it was impossible not to talk about that first denim jacket that we will never forget or even about that cozy sofa in our grandmas’ homes where we spent so much of our time watching tv. Each one of these tiny details is reflected in our Ezine. We want you to feel the 40s, 50s, and 60s. We want you to know how it was. But more that this, we want to show you how these times have inspired so many artists and designers doing what they do today.

NEW DESIGN OF THE JÖNKÖPING CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION IN SWEDEN When we hear the word ‘Sweden’ we automatically think about the breath-taking nature and the incredible buildings in Stockholm. Well, Sweden is well known for the eco-friendly attitude, indeed. This was one of the tasks that Erik Giudice Architects had to face when developing this railway station: to connect the city of Jönköping with its surrounding nature. The building is open on the both sides, towards the city from one, and the Munksjön Lake on the other one and it is mainly made of the wood combined with polycarbonate panels to provide natural sunlight and good ventilation. At the same time, the curved surface absorbs and diffuses the noise of the trains, creating a more peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. The lower part of the station will be equipped with the number of the shops, restaurants and of course ticket offices as well. via Inhabitat
“SCIENCE CITY” IN EGYPT - WESTON WILLIAMSON + PARTNERS Weston Williamson + Partners’ team won the “Science City” international competition. The project included the design of 125.000 m² of a desert area on the Western edge of the city of Cairo, Egypt. The challenge here was to develop the 21st-Century Science Museum and new National Institute for Scientific Innovation expressing “a particular vision of the quest for knowledge and the pursuit of science.” According to the jury, “this project was the one that best responded to the challenges of the brief. The design is subtle but rich. It involves various levels of planning” via Dezeen and Archdaily

MID-CENTURY MODERN DESIGN: WHAT IS IT? Mid-Century Modern design is an architectural, interior, product and graphic design movement that began in the early 30’s and peaked close to the end of the 60’s, when it made way for other urban developments.
In terms of architecture, it was thought as a style that emphasized simplicity and integration with nature. This design was expected to feature very wide and big windows, and also lots of open floor plans. These aspects were the result of a post war era, when people were trying to open up interior spaces and bring the outdoors in, not only creating a harmony between comfort and a classy style, but also endorsing a more healthy way of living. Following, there are some examples of mid-century modern residences

VITRA DESIGN MUSEUM - FURNITURE COLLECTION What nowadays is considered to be one of the world’s most significant furniture collections - containing thousands of pieces designed by 20th century design legends like Alvar Aalto, Gerrit Rietveld and Le Corbusier - was once a small private furniture collection that stood right under out feet, in a basement in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The collection that encompasses today more than 6,000 pieces of furniture, as well as approximately 1,000 lamps and other important documents (from dates that range between the late 19th century and the 20th century) is now on display in the newest Vitra Design Museum building. It’s called Schaudepot, which translates to english roughly as “exhibition hall”, and was designed by Herzog & de Meuron. A 1600-squared-meter space, Schaudepot has two floors, those of which are used exclusively to display this very extensive collection. However, the ground floor is where we can find its centerpiece, a permanent exhibition of 400 of the collection’s most important items. These pieces are all organized chronologically, which gives the visitor a more a comprehensive overview of how furniture has changed and evolved throughout the past two centuries. For this reason, the collection has a special emphasis on areas such as: the beginnings of modern design in the 19th century; classic modernism (with Bauhaus and De Stijl for example); post war design (Scandinavian design as well as Italian, and American designers like Eames and Nelson); tendencies of the 1960s and 1970s, like radical Design, experimental plastic objects and modular
furniture; postmodern tendencies; and contemporary design. Some of the most iconic pieces you’ll be able to find at the Schaudepot are - amongst others - the 1932 Alvar Aalto’s Paimio Chair; the 1925 Marcel Breuer’s Wassily chair; the 1941 Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen’s Organic Armchair; and the famous 1952 Arne Jacobsen’s The Ant \ Aside from furniture, astonishing examples of lighting designs are also on display at the Schaudepot. This part of the collection includes many classics of the 20th century, such as the “WG24“ by Wilhelm Wagenfeld or Richard Sapper’s “Tizio“ lamp, but also rare pieces and prototypes.

BACKGROUND The trio obtained their Masters Degree at the Rhode Island School of Design, and worked on several other projects before coming together to create this prestigious design studio based in Brooklyn, NY and Charleston, SC. Workstead’s aim has always been to “design responsible, context driven works that create a sense of place for both the objects they contain and the people that experience them”. Their first project was a simple and small kitchen in a Brooklyn Heights pre-war building, and their
SHOP Aside from their design projects, Workstead also designs furniture and lighting solutions, which are available for sale at their online shop. Their lighting design can be described as minimalist, yet elegant, with an industrial design feeling to it. The furniture line features a sideboard, a wardrobe, a sling chair, an ottoman and a side table, all of them made of superior quality hardwood and, in the case of the sling chair and ottoman, leather. What all these pieces have in common is the continuing sense of simplicity and efficiency, making all the products fall in line with a prevailing aesthetic.

breakthrough project came only in 2012. It was the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn, which still to this day, in their public spaces, boasts a design completely thought and executed by Workstead. Since the Wythe, the studio has been working with several known institutions, like The Dewberry Hotel in Charleston, as well as other commercial and residential clients. Additionally, their installations can be found in the collections of major companies like Barney’s, Facebook, Levi’s, Google, Yelp and The Harpoon Brewery.

PROJECTS
The Wythe Hotel, housed in a former cooperage from the early 20th century was the stage for Workstead breakthrough. The studio designed the lobby, the terraces, and the bar, choosing an approach that embodied and reflected their own style and focus. This way, we can see minimalist lighting designs across the three areas, with several of them featuring pieces designed by Workstead. There are also a lot of classic mid-century modern furniture pieces that create the perfect atmosphere, like the olive green chairs featured on the library. and her team’s projects.
/ INTERIOR DESIGN
Workstead was hired to work on an interior design project for a private residence on Union Street, for a family of three. Their main request at the time was to create more storing space, something that the studio did in a very elegant way, making the room still look simple and minimalist. The woodwork on the cabinets perfectly matched the olive green sofa that was chosen and the cupboard facing the dining room. Additionally, the color palette is, once again, a mirroring image of Workstead: “strong and rich, yet simple and efficient, which ended up working great with the midcentury furniture chosen to decorate and enhance the room.

And that universe is outlined essentially by two main activities: the planning of an architecture or interior design project and a personalized guidance service when it comes to shopping for furniture, lighting, and accessories.
THE PROJECT
An open floor plan is a great way to make a living space look more spacious and creates an even flow throughout the home. Openness is a key element in this project: the space flows from one room to the other and the overall texture of the furnishings help to create a magnificent ambiance. Luxurious furnishings, wooden floors, neutral shades, and lots of natural light enhances the appeal of what open floor plans are all about.
36 TRENDZINE
/ INTERIOR DESIGN
The furnishings are ultra-modern, though natural elements like the brick wall in the kitchen, the wood floor, and natural materials, maintain a certain comfort and friendliness in the house. The flower drawing on the black wall in the living room area is a magnificent emphasis to the overall decor. The unique accent rug is shaded in a natural hue with a simple geometric design; however, the rug’s appeal is not overpowering and blends flawlessly with the rest of the room.
The dining table is simple, splashed in a light hue with simple seating. Placed above it, a mid-century modern, music inspired suspension lamp by DelightFULL. With a sophisticated and contemporary visual aspect, stainless steel is an ideal neutral material that works with most kitchen designs. In fact, the kitchen takes the stainless steel effect one step further and utilizes this sleek material on the island as well. The velvet high-chairs bounces off the glimmer of the stainless steel and creates a plush, soft ambiance to the otherwise brisk design. The bathroom takes on a life of its own. A brilliant white ceramic lone bathtub and sink match perfectly with the neutral colored mosaic floor tiles. The taupe-hued upper-wall adds a charming contrast and creates a comfy ambiance. Distinctive and inviting, this home is the height of elegance combined with refined modernism.

Beverly Hills has been one of the most exciting and it places in the world for many years, now. So, there’s got to be a special reason for this place to work as some kind of irresistible magnet when it comes to captivating some of the most classy and charming people to ever walk this earth..

Initially and wrongly thought to be a mine of gold when it came to oil, Beverly Hills ended up attracting people’s attention for perhaps an even rarer good in the lands of California: water. Built around that precious good, by the mid-20th century the city came to be the place where some of the most prestigious actors and famous musicians seemed to look for a place to settle. It was also during that time window that major designer brands like Gucci and Van Cleef & Arpels decided to open their own stores in a little place that today we might know as Rodeo Drive. And it’s precisely just a few steps away from the luxurious Rodeo Drive that Cameron Mitchell decided to open an exceptional Ocean Prime Restaurant. Located in what is considered to be one of the most glamorous places in the world to live, eat and shop, and just a three-minute-walk away from the famous Four Seasons’ Beverly Wilshire, Ocean Prime “is making a splash in Beverly Hills”, winning awards and boasting an amazing mid-century modern design, that completes its classy vibe.
40 TRENDZINE

Ocean Prime’s probably most known because of its impressive menu of seafood and steaks, whose outstanding quality brought the restaurant the title of “One of the Best Steakhouses in LA”, awarded by Eater LA. However, it’s also its remarkable service, stunning settings and vibrant energy that makes Ocean Prime the ideal place to socialize, talk business, celebrate and indulge. And you’ll beable to do so in a space that features a very modern style, with multiple mid-century pieces like the golden high-chairs with a beautiful bright finish we can see on the bistro section; the main room’s side sofas, that give the space a very American 50’s ambience; or even the luxurious patio, where we can appreciate a very classic black and white color scheme, with a few subtle patterns that make it just right.
To add up and make that chic vibe a solid feeling throughout your night, Ocean Prime has on display some of the most elegant suspension lighting designs by DelightFULL. These beautiful ceiling pieces not only complete the whole design, but they are also a reminder that Ocean Prime is right at the center of this refined city. Not only that, but across the restaurant’s walls we can admire various artistic photos that fit right in with the midcentury modern design, showing us some of the biggest stars of that time, like Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot. All these little details create an extraordinary dining experience, where you’ll have the chance to drink “handcrafted cocktails and world-class wines in an atmosphere that is chic and sophisticated”, transporting us to an era of Hollywood classics and interior design breakthroughs.

HIS STORY
Frank Gehry was born in Toronto, Canada on February 28, 1929. He had studied at the University of Southern California and Harvard University. Gehry, based in Los Angeles since the 1960s, is known for his use of bold, postmodern shapes and unusual fabrications. His most famous designs include: the Walt Disney Concert Hall (Lost Angeles), and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (Spain). Frank was creative at a young age, building imaginary homes and cities from items found in his grandfather’s hardware store. This interest in unconventional building materials would come, in the future, to characterize Gehry’s architectural work. Gehry has hold a variety of jobs while attending college, in 1949. It was during his time in University of Southern California’s School of Architecture that he has changed is Goldberg surname to Gehry- in an effort to preclude antiSemitism. Back in 1956, Gehry has moved to Massachusetts with his wife, Anita Snyder, to join the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He later dropped out Harvard and divorced his wife- with whom he had two daughters. And, later, in 1975, Gehry married Berta Isabel Aguilera and had two more children.

HIS CARRER Primarily involved in building rather than furniture design, Gehry had remodeled a home for his family in Santa Monica with the money earned from “Easy Edges”- his own cardboard furniture line. The remodel involved surround the existing bungalow with corrugated steel and chain-link fence, effectively splitting the house open with an angled skylight. His Avant- garde design just caught the attention of the architectural world! This has launching Gehry career to new heights. So, he began designing homes in Southern California on a regular basis in 1980’s. As Gehry achieved vip status, his work took on a grander scale. His high-concept buildings, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, the Dancing House in Prague and the Guggenheim Museum building in Bilbao, Spain, have become tourist attractions in their own right. He has returned to his roots as a residential designer, in 2011, unveiling his first skyscraper, 8 Spruce Street in New York City, and the Opus Hong Kong tower in China. Gehry style can be characterized by a deconstructivity stylea post -structuralist aesthetic that challenges accepted design paradigms of architecture while breaking with the modernist ideal of form following function.

German-Australian architecture firm Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) has been named the 2016 laureate of the European Prize for Architecture, one of Europe’s most prestigious architecture awards. The prize is given annually to architects from Europe who are considered to have “changed and challenged the direction of contemporary architecture today” and who have shown a “new path and direction for an architecture that is deeply humane and committed to forward the principles of European humanism”. Chicago Athenaeum president, Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, found in LAVA work those achievements: “LAVA successfully uses imagination and intellect combined with social forces and the latest building technologies as both theme and apparatus of their designs, creating a body of work that explores and expresses architecture as a risk-taking, visceral experience”. The prize is presented every year by The European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum. Past laureates include Marco Casagrande in 2013, Alessandro Mendini in 2014, and Santiago Calatrava in 2015. “In the process, we come to experience architecture anew: from how it is imagined to how it is drawn, to the challenges and dynamics that define forward-thinking about time, place, and the environment, and how buildings and urban ideas become constructed and take shape as part of a collective public experience”, added Christian Narkiewicz-Laine. Founded in 2007 by Chris Bosse, Alexander Rieck, and Tobias Wallisser, LAVA operates as an international think tank with offices in Berlin, Stuttgart, and Sydney. The studio combines future technologies and digital fabrication to design buildings that are efficient with materials, energy, time and costs. The firm’s work is often informed by patterns and geometries found in nature that are structurally and materially efficient, such as spider webs, snowflakes, and soap bubbles. The firm’s current projects include the King Abdulaziz City for Science And Technology (KACST) headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a youth sports hostel in Bayreuth, Germany, and the Zhejiang Gate Towers in Hangzhou, China. Recently completed projects include the Philips company headquarters in Eindhoven, a terrace house renovation and an airport retail fit out in Sydney,as well as a university master plan Riyadh, a youth sports hostel in Bayreuth, mixeduse projects in Berlin and Hangzhou, and villas in HCMC currently under construction. “How can we create spaces suitable for contemporary lifestyles and how can we contribute towards an environment that offers quality for everyone?” 50 TRENDZINE

A LOOK ON MID-CENTURY FASHION Since the end of World War II, fashion took quite some time to settle into an accepted form which would stand, eventually, as the historical look of the mid-century. This might have happened because 1950’s fashion was the stage for the introduction of many new styles and some other recycled ones that paid homage to the 1920’s. In a time when freedom was becoming a widespread notion, so did amidst the fashion industry people saw a chance to be bolder about to their fashion choices, not having to conform to specific looks that were perceived as more appropriate for certain occasions. With the United States becoming more and more of a fashion trendsetter, the Broadway musical My Fair Lady was also major inspiration, focused on the whimsical styles of the pre-war period. Still, one of the major issues that outlined the 50’s was the waistline. So much so that the phrase “the wandering waistline” was coined at the Paris spring collections in 1952. All types of waistline had their enthusiasts, from high waist to low waist, not forgetting the natural waist and even the “no waist” at all! At the head of these trends were always the same two main designer houses: the French Dior and the Spanish Balenciaga.

Dior’s markedly high waists that had peeked during 1952, melted into a development of the earlier princess dresses, which followed feminine the figure as closely as a swim suit from high neck through the hips, flaring gently. Midway through the decade, fashion saw the beginning of a new trend with prominent, pointed bosom and a straighter, softer silhouette. By the end of the 1950’s, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel became “an adjective in her own time.” Her suit piece, with an open-jacket policy made display pieces of blouses. Coco Chanel made suits become a fashion item on their own, with the word-wide famous tweed jackets introduced by the house During the 50’s, some of the most popular colors included bright yellow, vibrant blue, violet, mauve, royal purple, emerald green, reds, magenta, pink and fuscia. The popular basic colors were always black, brown and sandy beige. Luckily, these trends set during the mid-century era managed to make their way to us in a timeless manner. For that reason, it’s not uncommon to see names like Natalie Portman rocking super high waist-lines, or Zooey Deschanel who happily seems to be brought back from the 50’s, always presenting a very vintage and retro style.
