Welcome to the February edition of Baker’s Business.

This month we’re featuring a great selection of money saving offers as well as keeping you up-to-date with the latest market developments in our Monthly Report.

Exchange Rates • Against the $, sterling opened the month at 1.61 and is unchanged at 1.61 as of 10th January.

• Against the €, sterling opened the month at 1.244 and ended much lower at 1.203 as of 10th January.

NEW to BAKO this month an exciting new addition to the range is the delicious Caramel Icing from Renshaw. Highly versatile, blended with fondant to give a smooth fudgy texture, this also comes with a £5 Off introductory offer, see Page 7 for details.

Crude Oil and Fuel Crude oil prices rose this month, as the US government reached an agreement to avert the immediate threat of a budget crisis.

Light sweet crude oil on NYMEX US rose by 5% and Brent crude oil on ICE London rose 1%. In Europe, wholesale fuel prices decreased slightly with diesel, unleaded petrol and heavy oil all down 1%.

We have a bumper selection of commodities this month all at fantastically low prices. From Turkish Sultanas and Cake Margarine, to Skimmed Milk Powder and Vegetable Oil. See pages 8 and 9 for details.

Fats and Oil Palm oil prices fell in Rotterdam by 2% weighed down by good global supplies and low demand. However, Malaysian palm oil prices firmed slightly due to concerns that heavy rains may cause floods in major palm growing areas. The December forecast for world soyabean production in 2012/13 was revised up by 0.1m tonnes from November figures to 41.2m tonnes, leading to price declines across most soyabean oil markets including Rotterdam. Prices for rapeseed oil fell by 5% and sunflower oil by 2% in Rotterdam. For lauric oils, coconut oil and palm kernel oil fell in both the Philippines and Rotterdam by 2%.

‘Editor’s Choice’ promotion

Milling wheat futures were down on CBOT 13% and LIFFE Paris 7% as the global wheat output forecast for 2012/13 was raised in December, driven by improved production forecasts for Australia. The price of milling wheat also fell in Australia, Canada and Germany, as did feed wheat on LIFFE London (-7%).

Dairy EU fresh milk prices were mixed last month, falling by 2% on the continent but increasing by 2% in the UK due to continued limited production factors such as high input costs and poor weather.

Butter prices rose slightly in Europe, supported by tight supplies and a reduction in private storage aid (PSA) stocks which had fallen to 38,000 tonnes by 2nd December, down from 133,000 tonnes in mid-August.

UK cream rose by 5%, supported by firm demand. EU SMP remain unchanged as, while supplies remain tight, demand has been somewhat subdued compared to earlier in the year. WMP prices fell by 1% whilst whey powder rose 3%.

UK cheddar prices were unchanged while egg prices saw some serious declines.

Cocoa Cocoa bean prices fell on both ICE and LIFFE by 7%, influenced by forthcoming cocoa sector reforms in the Ivory Coast. Prices of cocoa powder and butter also declined in December, with powder down 2% and butter 3% down in the UK. Despite this recent fall, cocoa butter remains up 85% year-on-year.
