St Asaph Cathedral Denbighshire

Saint Asaph Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of St Asaph, one of the six dioceses of the Church in Wales. It has been an important ecclesiastical centre for centuries and provides a vital link with Welsh literature and culture: The Cathedral is home to the William Morgan Bible and houses the North Wales International Music Festival each year.

The Cathedral’s Welsh name is 'Llanelwy' which means the sacred religious enclosure on

the banks of the river Elwy. The surrounding area has peaceful mountain and moorland walks along with a full range of coastal attractions.

Saint Kentigern built his Church in AD560.

When he returned to Strathclyde in AD573 he left the church in the hands of his successor – Asaph, since that time the Cathedral has been dedicated to Saint Asaph and the Diocese bears his name.

Above: 230 Churchill Deluxe stacking chairs installed in December 2003 The present building was begun in the thirteenth century and is reputed to be the smallest ancient Cathedral in Great Britain. The Cathedral has been destroyed by fire twice and has a fascinating and often violent history. It was destroyed in 1245 by the soldiers of Henry III and again by the armies of Edward I in 1282.

It was rebuilt between 1284 and 1381 only to be burned by Owain Glyndwr's Welsh troops in 1402 then in 1715 the tower was completely demolished in a fierce storm.

Rosehill jumped at the chance to furnish St Asaph Cathedral. We visited with sample chairs and helped to decide on quantity, layout and the style of chair that would best suit their needs.

“As a Cathedral we traditionally had black plastic chairs which we put out behind our smart wooden chairs for large services or concerts, and for use on the stage where the wooden chairs were too wide and too heavy.

Following fires in at least two Cathedrals in recent years, we have been advised not to store back plastic chairs in the Cathedral, so we decided to replace them with chairs from Rosehill which are smart, simple to store and easy to put out.”

Heralded as one of the most magnificent buildings in the country Ely Cathedral is a house of prayer, a unique educational resource, the Ely Diocese Mother Church and a very popular tourist attraction.

Founded by Queen Etheldreda; the daughter of Anna, King of East Anglia. She remained a virgin throughout her first marriage to Tondberht, ealdorman of the South Gyrwas. On his death she retired to the Isle of Ely (her dowry). In 660 she was re-married to Egfrith, the young king of Northumbria who was only 15 years old. He agreed that she should remain a virgin, as in her previous marriage, but 12 years later he wished their marital relationship to be normal.

Etheldreda, advised and aided by Wilfred, Bishop of Northumbria, refused. She left the King and became a nun. In 673 she restored an old church at Ely and founded her double monastery on the site of what is now Ely Cathedral.

Etheldreda's monastery flourished for 200 years until it was destroyed by the Danes. It was restored and refounded as a Benedictine community in 970 by Ethelwold and became the second richest abbey in England.
