The truth behind Green IT Few things seem to have attracted as much hype and rhetoric as the green debate and it’s become difficult for business decision makers to get clear sight of the real issues and truths that prevail here. To help you, our channel partners, Bell Micro has commissioned primary research with one of the UK’s most respected agencies to uncover the reality of the green debate for IT decision makers. Published in summary in this edition of Channel Voice, the research results make for interesting reading for those of us in the channel. Put simply, many customers have yet to tackle the Green IT issue. A large number don’t see IT as a carbon contributor, others are using outsourcing as a way addressing the problem. Many also think they are simply responding to the debate by pursuing activities around recycling hardware, paper and cans but ignoring the really big options in IT for reducing energy use.
The reality is that the projects we talk about all the time, topics such as: consolidation, virtualisation, utilisation and data management are also the topics that form the most effective parts of any green action plan. For your customers it’s killing two birds with one stone, for you it’s a chance to extend the sale and explore a far greater range of issues with your customers on which to build future business. Bell Micro will continue to invest in this kind of research and similar projects that give you clear sight of what’s going on in our market, and designed to stimulate business activity for you. We like joined up messages here at Bell Micro Enterprise Division, so you will also find some information here around Parallels, who we are proud to welcome as a new partner. Read more here about their ground-breaking virtualisation technology that use ‘containers’ to optimise consolidation and truly leverage the power of the underlying hardware.
I hope you enjoy reading the articles in this edition of Channel Voice, as ever you can talk with your Account Manager to explore any of the issues raised here in full detail.

It’s a Parallels World
A step-change in virtualisation technology from Parallels
Virtualisation is a topic demanding mindshare and driving spend among many IT decision makers, not least because there has never been more pressure to ‘do more with less’, to consolidate, to deliver IT as a service and to ensure availability of business critical applications and data. Virtualisation pays into all these key IT business drivers and is at the heart of the Parallels offer. Indeed the flagship product for this global solutions provider is Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, a step-change technology propelling virtualisation strategy forward. How do Parallels Virtuozzo Containers work? Firstly, a standard host operating system, typically Windows or Linux, resides on the server. Next comes the Virtualisation layer with a proprietary file system and a kernel service abstraction layer that ensures complete isolation and security between different Containers. This Virtualisation layer allows each Container to appear and act exactly like a standalone server. Finally, the Container itself houses the application or workload. This streamlined architecture has a negligible performance overhead as it doesn’t add virtual hardware into the technology stack. Furthermore, applications are run from the host OS and can be started using templates, further reducing the size of individual Containers. What makes Parallels interesting to your customer? Thanks to their small size and absence of a performance overhead, Containers can achieve far higher rates of consolidation than VMs and, moreover, can utilize the full power of the underlying hardware. Furthermore, the lightweight Container architecture means backups take a matter of seconds and costs for storage and SAN are dramatically reduced.
of benefits to the VDI approach, including simplifying patch management, mass provisioning new applications to users in seconds and dramatically reduced desktop TCO. The consolidation opportunity IT Managers have become accustomed to dedicating a single physical server to each application to ensure that there are no application conflicts and that there’s sufficient room for future growth. However, with today's high powered servers the single application approach leads to extremely low utilisation rates, and hardware is only a small subset of the total cost of server ownership, which is why server consolidation is becoming so important. Consolidation of the hardware alone has historically been the first step in consolidation projects. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers takes this a step further by consolidating not only hardware but also operating systems for easy management, reducing costs and complexity whilst improving service levels. What next? Parallels Virtuozzo Containers is a parallel OS virtualisation solution, proven in the market, it currently empowers over 1 million servers globally. The Parallels organisation employs more than 1,000 people worldwide. Founded in 1999 it offers a wide range of virtualisation and automation solutions allowing you to fully explore the ‘optimised computing’ opportunity with customers.
Parallels software solutions run on servers of any age and from any vendor, so whatever environment is in-situ your customers can benefit from this market-leading virtualisation technology. Who should you be talking to? Like any step-change technology, Containers provides an interesting talking point with all customers already operating or considering virtualisation solutions. Specifically it fits: Server Consolidation in predominantly heterogeneous hardware environments, Database Virtualisation, Linux Consolidation and Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI). VDI offers a key opportunity, and is a complex term for the simple concept of consolidating end-user desktops on a centralised server. VDI uses Virtualisation technology to create end-user desktops which can then be paired with other technologies to form a complete solution. There are a number

Migration of open files in windows environments… during business hours! The IT Department’s Dream Come True Planning downtime for the migration and administration of file data is always a contentious issue. When is the best time to turn everything off and carry out critical administration work? Is there ever a best time?! Often, the costly and time-consuming administration work must occur at weekends or during the night so as not to interrupt the day-to-day running of the business – these are the only times that files are closed. What IT department wants to come in at weekends, or stay late into the night, to manage such tasks? By catering for the needs of the many, the IT department often loses out. Luckily, aid is on hand thanks to the launch of the new Brocade File Management Engine (FME). Brocade FME is the first product that enables the migration of opened files and totally revolutionises the way file data is administered…much to the delight of IT departments.

Passing the Green UK Businesses Admit Green IT Shortcomings The Green Computing debate continues to gather momentum, so with partners and resellers all looking for a ‘state of the nation’, Bell Micro recently commissioned an independent research project to uncover the truth behind Green IT policies. Entitled “Passing the Green IT Buck” the research was conducted by Dynamic Markets and looks at the opinions from, and uncovers the concerns of, senior IT decision makers across the UK – as well as identifying how far UK businesses have come in successfully addressing Green issues. As a result of its focus, the research has also identified the Green IT opportunity for your business. Customers are looking for a sane voice, so take some time to read the report highlights below, or access the executive summary in full on our website at: www.bellmicro.eu/goingreen and make sure you are ready with the insight and answers required. So whilst many companies shout about green credentials, the reality in the IT department is far less encouraging, with the failure of drive originating from a perceived lack of leadership at the top of business. “Now must be the time to take a proactive approach to reduce the level of power consumption and hardware wastage, if not simply to reduce financial expenditure but also because enforcing green policies is being increasingly seen as the right ethical response,” said Antony Young, Director – Services, Security & Networking Divisions at Bell Micro. “What is clear from the research is that when it comes to being Green CEO’s must drive the business policies forward. It is disconcerting that the findings do not indicate a significant level of action, but it also suggests that changes are ready to be made which is promising.”
You should already be in a position to offer benchmarking services for current carbon emissions from technology and then follow-up with recommendations for adopting an effective future strategy aimed at cutting both emissions and costs. Use Green Computing as a platform to steer future IT spend and enhance your position as a trusted, strategic partner. Bell Micro has resources and expertise in place now to make sure you can make this promise to your customers. Go to market now with this issue. Our online marketing resource campaignWORKS (www.bellmicro.eu/campaignworks) already features a Green IT campaign template, allowing you to quickly create a direct mail and e-shot campaign.
Marry the issues raised here with your own Green Computing capabilities and make sure you are the first to speak to your customers about this initiative.

Key Findings Include: • •

•
An estimated 79% of UK companies have failed to adopt a formal policy and a staggering 91% have failed to apportion specific budget to green IT issues Green issues are reported as being taken seriously by 84% of organisations, elevating the issue to the attention of top management. Yet despite this claim, only half of the UK IT decision makers interviewed actually believed that the drive for green IT initiatives comes from the CEO or MD When it comes to proactively initiating green processes the results were even more disconcerting. 91% of UK organisations have failed to allocate specific budget to accommodate necessary changes, with only 7% of large organisations finding it necessary to assign a specialist project team that can drive green changes across a business. In the SME category this falls to just 2% The majority in fact believe that IT is not responsible for the bulk of an organisation’s CO2 emissions. Of the small proportion of organisations that have implemented a full green IT policy (which is just 8% in the UK) the most common measures taken remain to be recycling of hardware, paper and cans – indicating that policies fall short when it comes to addressing the real concerns of energy consumption Of the 350 organisations questioned throughout the UK, 15% have failed to implement any form of green policy at all, and 61% of those that have a policy have not implemented them completely. Faced with the prospect of being forced to implement a compliant green IT policy, 41% of UK business feared that they would not be ready within a 12 month period Faced with investing in green solutions many of those questioned would seek to shift responsibility by outsourcing to a third party. 85% of organisations with a green policy were found to be more likely to be outsourcing IT functionality, yet only 27% insisted on checking the green credentials of a supplier. 21% admitted to having no knowledge if such checks were even in place
