Home & Interiors Outdoor Living

By Katherine Sorrell

consulting a professional, who will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of.

Longer days mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. If your garden is in need of an update, the secret is in the planning - how will you use the space and what do you want from it? Sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they co-ordinate. If in doubt, consider

6

In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual interest

and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences, hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path entwined with fragrant honeysuckle makes a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can link two different areas of the garden and offer a shady spot to sit in. Finally, furniture. Consider waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property. Beauty A Touch of Indulgence by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Work and family demands can make it pretty difficult to find time to treat ourselves. Thankfully, our top picks this month make indulgence easy. I have very dry skin, so tend to use rich body butters. But sometimes I like something a bit lighter, that doesn’t take half an hour to sink in. Odylique’s Rose Velvet Body Lotion, £29, has proven a godsend. It’s a powerhouse of botanical ingredients, including aloe, avocado, cocoa bean, coconut and rose petals, smells gorgeous and absorbs quickly. My skin just drinks it up, and feels much softer and more hydrated for the rest of the day. Plus, as it’s 100% natural (93% organic), it’s gentle enough to use on even my daughter’s sensitive skin. Continuing on with the rose theme, another of my 10

beauty essentials at the moment is Mixtress’s It’s All Roses Toner, £10.95. I find most toners too drying for my skin, but this one is really hydrating. The main ingredient is rose water, from petals that have been steamed to extract the oil and juice. Unsurprisingly, it smells beautiful and is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. I like to keep it to hand to spritz if my skin feels dried out by central heating or airconditioning. It’s great at removing any last traces of makeup, and leaves skin feeling wonderfully soft. I try a lot of cleansers as a beauty writer, but Akamuti’s Sweet Orange Facial Cleanser, £7, is one of my all-time favourites. The sweet orange oil works as a natural exfoliator, to wipe away dead skin cells and leave me with softer, ‘glowier’ skin. Other natural oils, including sweet almond and olive oil, ‘feed’ my skin and leave it softer and plumper. It’s effective at removing makeup (including mascara), but gentle enough for even my sensitive skin. Plus, a little goes a long way, so it’s

Please mention the DELL DIRECTORY when responding to adverts

superb value for money. A new lipstick always feels like a real indulgence. More so than a mascara or pretty much any other cosmetic product. A pop of colour and I’m set for whatever lies ahead that day. Clarins’ new Joli Rouge Brilliant Lipsticks, £19.50, are a real treat. Formulated with organic marsh samphire extract and mango oil, they’re very hydrating, so leave lips feeling utterly pampered. With a choice of 12 colours, there’s one to suit any skin tone. Guava gets my vote for daytime wear, though coral tulip comes a very close second. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to skincare,

so I do love a product that makes it easier. Plantscription Powerful Lifting Overnight Mask, £52, by Origins does just that. As implied by the name, you massage it into your skin before bed, then forget about it. It absorbs into your skin, so you don’t need to faff around with cotton wool pads or a muslin cloth to remove it. Natural ingredients sourced from around the globe include Indian Commiphora, a tree resin that works to stimulate skin’s own anti-ageing Hyaluronic Acid. The mask helps to tighten, lift and plump skin, so you look fresherfaced in the morning, even if the kids/dog/ partner woke you up several times in the night.

Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn. So what makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants. • They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants. • Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back. • Weeds may harbour pests or diseases. So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer? • Get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden

16

plants start to grow strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. • Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating. • Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination. • Remove your weeds before they set seed. • Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). • When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots is my little red-handled weeder, see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/good-growing for more information. • Don’t take a short cut by

rotovating ground which is heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on. • Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

Don’t Try To Hide From Poor Hearing by Kate McLelland When did you last mishear someone’s name, fail to follow the plot of a TV drama or ask someone to repeat something they said, two or three times? According to the website NHS Choices, there are approximately four million people in the UK with hearing loss who could benefit from wearing hearing aids but who either ignore their condition or refuse to do anything about it.

So why is it so hard for us to admit that our hearing is deteriorating? As a society we have become much more compassionate about aging issues such as memory loss and dementia, but sadly there is still a tendency to regard age-related deafness as something of a joke, inspiring caricatures of crotchety senior citizens with ear trumpets. Human beings often use humour to defuse their fears and it may be that we make light of deafness because the prospect of losing our hearing scares us. Hearing loss can be profoundly isolating, leading sufferers to lose confidence and become withdrawn. Not only that, research has shown that it can lead to cognitive impairment

20

and depression.

Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that some people try to conceal their hearing problems (although it’s not usually a secret to friends and family, who have to deal with the consequences). Unfortunately, some people remain in denial until they are too old to adapt to using a hearing aid.

Hearing experts agree that the sooner you start to use a hearing aid, the more you’ll get out of it. Many people are put off from wearing aids because they believe it will make them look old, but modern devices are a great improvement on those that were available even a decade ago. CHOOSING A HEARING AID Hearing aids are powered by tiny batteries and nowadays almost all models are digital, rather than analogue. You can choose between several different types, depending on your personal tastes and needs.

The Behind-the-Ear (BTE) model does what it says: resting behind the ear, it transmits sound through either an earmould or a small, soft tip that enters the ear canal. In-the-Ear (ITE) sits in the ear canal and the shell of the ear, while In-the-Canal (ITC) fits inside the ear canal with its

working parts in the earmould. The Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) fits deeper into your ear canal than an ITC aid.

You can obtain hearing aids through the NHS (although the ITE, ITC and CIC models mentioned above are not standard issue). You’ll have a wider choice if you buy privately, but this can be a more costly option. Audiology specialist Louise Hart from Action on Hearing Loss says: “The NHS can procure high-quality digital hearing aids. For most situations, they perform very well and the waiting time to get one is short.” If you or someone you know is worried about their hearing, try the free online hearing test at www.actiononhearingloss. org.uk. If you’d like to know more about hearing loss, the charity Hearing Link can help by providing information, services and support. Visit www. hearinglink.org, or telephone 0300 111 1113.

Hearing loss can be worrying for you and your family, but don’t let outdated prejudices prevent you from getting the help you need. In future there’s no reason why using a hearing aid shouldn’t be just as acceptable as wearing a pair of reading glasses.

Recipes/Food Notes

Cake and Bake Ready in 1hr 40 minutes

Serves 6 - 8

Cheese, Onion & Pepper Quiche

This rich and creamy quiche can be served warm with new potatoes and coleslaw for a filling supper, but is just as tasty served cold as part of a picnic, packed lunch or summer buffet. 1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm fluted loose based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 1 tbsp olive oil

• 1 onion, peeled and very finely chopped • 4 large eggs

• 200ml crème fraiche

• 150ml double cream

• Large pinch of grated nutmeg

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated

• 25g Gruyere cheese, grated

• 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced

30

2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/ Gas 5. 3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the chopped onion for 8-10 minutes until very soft. Drain on kitchen paper. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the crème fraiche and double cream. Add the nutmeg and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Spread the fried onions in the pastry case and scatter over the Cheddar cheese. Gently pour in the egg mixture and top with the pepper slices. Scatter over the Gruyere cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

TIP: Y ou can freeze this quiche for up to 2 months. Allow to cool completely then wrap either the whole quiche or individual slices in foil.

Summer Pudding Ready in 1 hour plus overnight chilling time

Serves 6-8

This is a classic summer British dessert made with just a few simple ingredients. Make the day before serving to allow plenty of time for the sweet berry juices to soften the bread. Serve with softly whipped cream, Greek style yoghurt or tangy crème fraiche.

Ingredients: • 275g small strawberries, hulled and halved • 275g raspberries • 175g blueberries • 100g black or red currants, removed from stalks • 175g caster sugar • 10 large slices medium-sliced white bread (preferably one day old) • 1 whole strawberry, to decorate

5

TIP Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape.

6

Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways. Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps. Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary. Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice. To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.

Books for Dad Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy. Conspiracy – Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Wellresearched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape. 50 Evening Adventures – Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply.

32

The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laugh-out -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it. Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.

The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine. More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.

Toilet Training A Puppy You’ve chosen your puppy, and now it’s time to bring them home for the first time. It’s an exciting prospect but you’ll need plenty of patience, especially when it comes to toilet training. Here are a few ideas to help you train your pup, and minimise any damage to your home. Choose a specific outdoor toilet area Your dog will soon get used to the idea of going to the toilet outside, but having a specific spot will help to speed up the process. You’ll need to take them to this area every time they need the toilet, without fail, and give them a treat as soon as they’ve been. How do you know when they need to go? After a while you’ll be able to spot the

PETS signs, but until then it’s a good idea to take them outside first thing in the morning, and when they’ve eaten or had a drink of water, but generally at regular hourly intervals throughout the day at first. When accidents happen Accidents are inevitable at this stage, but it’s important not to tell off your puppy. Just take them to the designated toilet area as soon as possible to keep the message consistent.

Rewarding your dog when they do the right thing is far better than reacting negatively when they don’t. You wouldn’t want them to be frightened of you, and by using positive responses you’ll soon be able to form a strong bond with your new pet.

Care and Repair Edinburgh recognised for best practice in volunteering An Edinburgh based charity which assists older and disabled people to live securely and independently in their own homes, has been recognised again for its best practice in volunteering and volunteer management. Care and Repair Edinburgh is a Scottish charity governed by a board of directors who give their time voluntarily. There are twelve paid staff and 30 volunteers. The charity offers a range of services, from small DIY repairs carried out for free by volunteers, to larger domestic improvements and home-from-hospital adaptations, arranged via its trades list of trusted professionals. As a sign of commitment to its growing group of volunteers, Care and Repair Edinburgh undertook Volunteer Scotland’s Investing in Volunteers (liV) programme and achieved its IiV Award in 2013. The award has now been renewed for a further period of three years, following a six month renewal process led by the charity’s Volunteer Officer, Yvonne Georgeson. IiV is the UK quality standard for all organisations that involve volunteers in their work. “Achieving the renewal of our IiV award from Volunteer Scotland means that we have been able to benchmark the quality of our volunteer management and involvement and improve the effectiveness of our work with volunteers. “Over the past six months a number of our staff, volunteers and board members have been interviewed by an IiV assessor, and we have been graded on a renewal checklist based on nine key indicators and 46 practices. A report was submitted to the UK Quality Assurance Panel and then on to the UK Volunteering Forum Awarding Panel for ratification”.

Louise Love, Interim CEO of Care and Repair Edinburgh

“Care and Repair Edinburgh is proud to be an IiV achiever, having received the award in 2016 for the 2nd time. We value our volunteers and remain committed to volunteering within our organisation.

“We are always looking to expand our volunteer group, so if you are good at DIY or IT/Technical basic fixes, or know of someone who is, we would love to hear from you. Contact us on 0131 337 1111 or email Reception@careandrepairedinburgh.org.uk”

Louise Love, Interim CEO of Care and Repair Edinburgh In 2015, Care and Repair Edinburgh helped more than 5,000 older and disabled people stay safely in their own homes and carried out 1,370 small DIY jobs. Volunteers offer assistance with a wide range of tasks including changing light bulbs, tuning televisions, setting up a computer or putting up shelves.

Finance

By Ann Haldon

Staying In Or Leaving The EU What are the implications for your personal finances?

With so much speculation about the economic implications of leaving the EU, you are probably wondering what the effect will be on your personal finances, whether we stay or go. The problem is there’s a lack of hard data or previous experience on which to model financial predictions for leaving the EU, so clear judgement is already hampered. David Cameron’s negotiations at the summit earlier this year mean that we retain the pound if we stay in Europe, and won’t be forced into adopting the euro at any future point. Many top business people and political figures are campaigning strongly to leave, and envision a more stable UK having regained our independence - negotiating trade deals on our own terms, and taking back the control we once had. SO WHAT ISSUES SHOULD WE BE THINKING ABOUT? To provide a clearer picture of the issues involved when thinking about the pound in your pocket, we’ve covered a few of the areas that would experience the biggest impact should we exit, as well as providing some of the

expert opinions aired in the media over the last few months on: • The value of the pound. • The state of the property market. • Fuel prices. • Flight and travel costs. • Data roaming charges. A MAJORITY VOTE TO LEAVE THE EU The value of sterling At the start of 2016, sterling fell to its lowest level for 10 years against the dollar, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding our membership of the European Union. In general, a weaker sterling brings higher inflation and reduced purchasing power for consumers, but low value might only be an issue during the transition period rather than in the long-term.

Ratings agency, Moody’s, have also suggested the UK’s strong credit rating could be put at risk if we leave the EU, but as we mentioned earlier, opinions aren’t based on hard evidence as there’s no data on which to model an outcome.

Others have suggested that being independent of Europe would allow us to forge our own way without impedance, taking more control over how sterling fares in the markets. In fact, former CBI leader, John Longworth, recently expressed his personal view that the UK’s future would be “brighter” if we left Europe.

The property market Earlier this year, online estate agents eMoov surveyed 1,000 homeowners about the impact of an exit on property prices. 55% of people thought an exit would affect the price of their property with 34% of this number suggesting that it could increase the value of their home.¹

eMoov say that, rather than an exit from Europe directly affecting the UK property market, the accompanying general economic uncertainty might dissuade would-be purchasers from making such a huge financial decision, which could then reduce overall demand. Fuel prices The Automobile Association claims that petrol prices would rise by nearly 19p per litre soon after an exit vote.2 Their calculation was based on a report by Goldman Sachs, which estimated a 20% fall in the value of the pound, and a tripling of oil prices.

If this sounds like a huge increase you might be right; however, the RAC suggests that even if sterling did fall in value, fuel prices would not be dramatically affected by the drop.

Cost of travel Dame Carolyn McCall, CEO of easyJet, has warned that the cost of travel would rise steeply if we exit the EU, and it would mean the end of cheap flights. Others suggest a less severe impact for holidaymakers,

saying that a fall in local prices within many countries would compensate for the drop in sterling value. Again, even if a drop in the value of the pound does occur, there’s no reason to believe that it would be a long-term problem. Data roaming charges The cost of using mobile phones and other devices abroad could increase significantly if we leave the EU. This is because the arrangement to reduce extortionate data roaming fees once charged by UK providers may no longer be valid if we are not part of the European Union. It is thought unlikely that a similar agreement could be reached by an independent UK. VOTING TO STAY At the EU summit in February, David Cameron secured ‘special

status’ for the UK in Europe. This includes exemption from the ‘ever closer union’ which would involve greater political integration of member states one of the original intentions of the EU’s founders.

The Prime Minister also attained specific recognition that the euro was not the sole currency within the Union, protecting the existence of sterling now and in the future. Financial regulation by Europe is expected to continue, however, and this is one of the major issues for those wanting to exit.

Author and property expert, Kate Faulkner, believes that growth of the property market would continue if we were to stay in Europe, but this would be at a reasonable level rather than a return of the unsustainable price rises that we’ve seen in the past.
