2021 Dell Med Commencement Program

Page 1

At this world-class institution, you worked hard, and you prevailed. But commencement means beginning, and now the real change starts. At Texas, you learned to think big. Go change the world.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Graduate, In a certain way, the word “commencement” feels like a misnomer — because with graduation, many things actually come to an end. And yet we call it commencement because it is also a form of beginning. You’re now poised to begin the next step in your educational journey by attending residency. For that, I am both grateful and excited. The world needs the skills and knowledge that you have acquired here on campus. Therefore, the degree to be conferred upon you is more than just an accolade or credential — it is a solemn calling to lead and serve. Traditionally, Commencement takes place on the Forty Acres with the entire UT community. Last year, we pivoted to online forums. This year, we’re grateful for opportunities to celebrate safely and responsibly inperson. Thus, our near-normal celebration this year signals another form of commencement — that of a postpandemic world into which you will step as leaders and change agents. As you do so, you go forth with my supreme confidence in your talents and abilities. You’ve graduated from one of the world’s very best universities during incredibly trying times. You’ve proven yourselves adaptable and resilient. So I very much look forward to seeing what you achieve, where your degree takes you, who you serve … in short, how you change the world. Congratulations and Hook ’em!

Jay Hartzell President, The University of Texas at Austin

LETTER FROM THE DEAN Dell Med Graduates, One of the best moments we have shared is when I called to extend your offer of admission more than four years ago. Some of you screamed, some cried, and some feigned coolness, but I knew better. I hold those memories and so many others we have shared since then. Your commitment to join the Class of 2021 was more than an agreement to attend Dell Medical School. It was a commitment to being bold, innovative and collaborative. A commitment to sitting in a physical and metaphorical construction site while we continued to build ourselves from the ground up. A commitment to caring for Central Texans and one another through highs and lows. You have accomplished all of this and more, exceeding our expectations every step of the way. I hope you’re proud of how you have transformed our school and the health of our community — especially during the pandemic. We’ve written this chapter of your medical education together, and you have been a key part of our history. Now, it’s time to officially pass the pen on to you. Wherever you’re headed, I have no doubt the rest of your story will be remarkable — all of us at Dell Medical School feel lucky to be a part of it. Happy graduation and congratulations, doctor.

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this pledge: I will respect the autonomy, dignity and privacy of my patients. I will practice my profession with conscience and in accordance with best medical practice. I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy and understanding may outweigh the benefits of surgery and medications. I will not permit bias, prejudice or other societal constraints to impact my responsibility to my patient, and I will be vigilant in addressing health inequities. I will avoid the traps of overtreatment and advocate for those without access. I will always put patients and their families ahead of personal economic gain. I will prevent disease and promote health. I will advance health in my community beyond the walls of the clinic and hospital. I will collaborate with all members of the health care team to provide comprehensive care to my patients and the community. I will recognize the limits of my knowledge and skill and seek the help of others when needed. I will work to improve the quality and safety of the health system through innovation, collaborative leadership and teamwork. I will attend to my own health, well-being and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard. If I do not violate this oath, I will live honored knowing that I have returned to society the great investment and trust it has placed in me.
