LETTER FROM THE DEAN
Class of 2024,
This year, Dell Medical School celebrates its first decade of success. Since our founding in 2014, our students, trainees, faculty and staff have set the standard for excellence in medical education — and witnessed remarkable transformation on campus! Because of the incredible talent and commitment of students like you, our school has become synonymous with excellence, innovation and compassion in health care.
You entered Dell Med in an era of disease unprecedented in our lifetimes, with your early experience shaped by the unpredictable demands of a global pandemic. The rigor of medical school was, for you, intensified by times of uncertainty and change. But during our years together, we also saw — and found within ourselves — countless acts of kindness, selflessness, and resilience that strengthened the bonds of our community and reaffirmed our shared humanity. We experienced renewed focus on the art of caring and a capacity for innovation at a pace far greater than at any point in history.
Now, as we enter Dell Med’s next decade and a new era that will be defined by computation rapidly accelerating toward cognition, it’s your time. How fitting that we conclude our first 10 years with the graduation of a class of truly exceptional physicians. You are the leaders. The changemakers. The wonders you will witness — and the wonders you will work — are things that we can only now imagine.
Congratulations, doctors. The future is waiting for you.
Claudia F. Lucchinetti, M.D. Dean, Dell Medical School Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs, The University of Texas at Austin Frank and Charmaine Denius Distinguished Dean’s Chair in Medical LeadershipABOUT THE DEAN
Claudia F. Lucchinetti, M.D.Claudia F. Lucchinetti, M.D., is dean of Dell Medical School and senior vice president for medical affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, the anchor of an emerging integrated academic health system in one of the fastestgrowing cities in the U.S.
An internationally recognized neurologist, Lucchinetti led a 2014 landmark study describing patterns of tissue damage in early multiple sclerosis that pivotally refined medicine’s understanding of the disease. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious John Dystel Prize for MS Research.
Before coming to UT, Lucchinetti spent nearly three decades working as a researcher, clinician and educator at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she was dean of clinical and translational science and director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science; neurology department chair; a professor; and a member of the Mayo Clinic Board of Governors and Board of Trustees.
Lucchinetti earned her medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and, after an internship at RushPresbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center, completed a neurology residency and a fellowship in neuroimmunology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
At this world-class institution, you worked hard, and you prevailed.
But commencement means beginning, and now the real change starts.
At Texas, you learned to think big. Go change the world.

2024 KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Michael Dell
Michael Dell is chairman and chief executive officer of Dell Technologies, an innovator and technology leader providing the essential infrastructure for organizations to build their digital future, transform IT and protect their most important information.
Michael’s story started in 1984 when the 19-year-old, working from his UT Austin dorm room, founded Dell Technologies with $1,000. Notably quoted as saying that “technology is about enabling human potential,” Michael’s vision of how technology should be designed, manufactured and sold forever changed the IT industry. In 1992, Michael became the youngest CEO ever to earn a ranking on the Fortune 500. Known and admired for his astute business vision and bold moves, Michael took Dell Technologies private in 2013, setting the stage to architect the largest technology deal in history with the combination of Dell, EMC and VMware in 2016 and the subsequent relisting of Dell Technologies on the public markets in 2018.
In 1998, Michael formed MSD Capital, now DFO Management, a private investment firm that exclusively manages the capital for the Dell family. In 1999, he and his wife, Susan Dell, established the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to accelerate opportunity for children growing up in urban poverty in the U.S., India and South Africa. In 2013, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation pledged $50 to the University of Texas at Austin to establish Dell Medical School.
Michael is the author of two books, “Direct from Dell” and “Play Nice But Win.”
2024 STUDENT KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Daniel Bamrick-FernandezDaniel R. Bamrick-Fernandez, elected by his peers to speak today, is graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with an M.D. from Dell Medical School and an MBA from McCombs School of Business. Danny earned his bachelor’s degree in history and Spanish from the University of Memphis and the University of Georgia and a master’s in biomedical sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In June, he will continue his medical training as a dermatology resident at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Prior to medical school, Danny spent five years as an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army’s 20th Special Forces Group, serving in Guatemala, Peru, Kuwait, Syria and Iraq. Since serving, he has continued to be involved in veterans affairs, alongside interests in anti-racist reforms, preservation of language diversity, support for people who migrate, and environmental stewardship. While at Dell Med, Danny coled the Queer Medical Association, which supports efforts toward greater diversity and inclusivity in medicine.
Danny is proud to also have the support and encouragement of a big, loving family. He is here today thanks to their efforts and sacrifices. His great-grandparents migrated to this country from Italy and Ireland, as did his husband, from Paraguay. His parents and grandparents built families through hard work in such careers as construction, military service, cosmetology, nursing and culinary arts. Their American dream had at its center a value on education, and they encouraged each generation to strive for opportunities beyond what they themselves held.

HIPPOCRATIC
OATH
I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this pledge:
I will respect the autonomy, dignity and privacy of my patients.
I will practice my profession with conscience and in accordance with best medical practice.
I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as scienc e, and that warmth, sympathy and understanding may outweigh the benefits of surgery and medications.
I will not permit bias, prejudice or other societal constraints to impact my responsibility to my patient, and I will be vigilant in addressing health inequities.
I will avoid the traps of overtreatment and advocate for those without access. I will always put patients and their families ahead of personal economic gain.
I will prevent disease and promote health. I will advance healt h in my community beyond the walls of the clinic and hospital.
I will collaborate with all members of the health care team to provide comprehensive care to my patients and the community.
I will recognize the limits of my knowledge and skill and seek the help of others when needed.
I will work to improve the quality and safety of the health system through innovation, collaborative leadership and teamwork.
I will attend to my own health, well-being and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard.
If I do not violate this oath, I will live honored knowing that I have returned to society the great investment and trust it has placed in me.
