“A” vehicle: UK descriptor for all armored vehicles, including tanks, selfpropelled guns, and armored-personnel carriers AA: antiaircraft AAMG: antiaircraft machine gun AAV: amphibious assault vehicle [tracked] ack-ack: British term for antiaircraft fire ACP: armored command post active armor: A type of armor designed to defeat dynamically incoming warheads; embedded sensors in explosive cassettes detect an incoming shell and explode outwards to defeat the effects of the incoming warhead. Also known as explosive reactive armor (ERA). ACV: armored combat vehicle AEV: armored engineer vehicle AFD (automatic feeding device): mechanism designed to feed ammunition into the breech of the gun automatically aft: rear of tank AFV (armored fighting vehicle): term used for military vehicles with both armor protection and armament AGLS: automatic gun-laying system AIFV: armored infantry fighting vehicle AMC (Automitrailleuse de découverte): French, mobile machine gun, scouting; the French term for armored car AML (Automitrailleuse léger): French, light mobile machine gun; the French term for light armored car ammunition: complete unit of fire, including primer, case, propellant, and projectile AMR (Automitrailleuse de reconnaissance): French, mobile reconnaissance machine gun; the French term for scout car antenna: radio communications aerial, usually mounted on the top of the vehicle
