EUAN MACLEOD Guardian presented by Young Curators at Trinity 2019 Curatorial Team Lewis Dobbin Euan Germanos Lewis Kanellos Alexi Little James Wang
Young Curators at Trinity is a pilot program designed to give high school students a deep engagement with an artist’s studio practice over a concentrated period of time, with an exhibition being the outcome rather than a written assignment or presentation. The Trinity students visited Euan Macleod’s studio three times, were taken to see his solo exhibition at Clayton Utz and were given a broad range of his previous exhibition catalogues. Under the guidance of Delmar Gallery’s Curator, they were tasked with developing a curatorial theme based on their research on Macleod’s work. A process of shortlisting paintings then ensued, taking into consideration how they collectively related to the theme and could be displayed in the school’s gallery. Further aspects of curating were touched on, such as public programs, marketing and promotion. The idea of a student-curated exhibition was the brainchild of Max Germanos at 3:33 Art Projects. He is currently in the process of working with other high schools in Sydney to present exhibitions over the next 12 months.

Euan Macleod: Guardian is an exploration of the desire for security and being nurtured, whether that be as an individual, in a family, by the nation state or by our place in the environment and natural world. Anxiety and apprehension about whether this can be fulfilled runs through the selected paintings. The exhibition represents almost a 40-year span of Macleod’s practice, with sketches and preliminary drawings included to give insights into his way of working.
