et me begin by sharing a few things about myself. My life mirrors my true self! As a child, I’ve always wanted to experience the world and live every moment in wonder and enchantment. To welcome the passing of time with more knowledge, wisdom, and beauty. Embracing each moment with love and conviction. And at all costs, never reaching the end of my life surrounded by regrets and tormented by an unfulfilled life. Instead, I’ll be the vision of a courageous woman who lived authentically in her truth. Guided by her life’s calling to best serve the world. My life is a true testament of what we all can achieve when we empower ourselves; thus giving others the courage to find their own light. I am an educated Salvadoran American woman, mother of two, Marine, college teacher, photographer, entrepreneur, and the creator of DGARAY Magazine. I was a vibrant little girl that survived the hardships of El Salvador’s Civil War to give birth to a new life that continues to defy the odds of what’s possible. The beauty of life is to preserve the timeless within us.

DGARAY is more than a brand. It’s a creative movement and lifestyle composed of upcoming talent and industry leaders from different places, cultures, genres, genders, and perspectives: music artists, photographers, film producers, actors, athletes, fashion models, fashion designers, beauty professionals, writers, entrepreneurs, and more. DGARAY is a platform to spotlight talent who seek to inspire, empower, and elevate others though their work. There are many magazines that send conflicting and misguided messages that make readers doubt and reject their own beauty by trying to live up to the unrealistic beauty standards and false notion glamorized by social media DGARAY Magazine is your source for inspiration! Inspiration is defined as, “a force or influence that inspires someone.” Creating a magazine was never part of the plan. In the Marines, I pursued a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice to become an FBI Agent with an intent to enroll in law school and live out my adulthood as a criminal prosecutor. However, life has

a way of stirring the pot and making you hungry for new found desires. After earning my Master’s in Business Administration, I accepted a teaching position at Kaplan College’s Criminal Justice Department in Vista, CA. During this time, I was teaching a Career Strategies Course, which assisted students in finding their natural talents. I also took the assessment along with my students and as a class we explored all the possibilities within each talent. That’s when I decided to start a new journey consisting of photography and bring my students along for the ride. From discussing camera types, buying lenses, working with models, showing the shooting process, designing my DG logo, and creating my first Facebook photography pages. They were my first fans! In 2011, after an unexpected relocation to Colorado, my sole focus was to immerse myself in photography, discover my nitch and find the deeper purpose within my work... Hmm? What would all this teach me? Quickly, I discovered a love for fashion photography and worked with local

SLOW DRIP: THE STORY OF

MAGAZINE

By Ulysses Porter Brown Knowing that the back story of a product adds value to it, I approached DGARAY Magazine’s founder, Delmy Gooch, with the script that I penned titled, “Slow Drip.” The “dripping faucet” metaphor, would be used to represent her struggles. These drips/struggles would eventually fill her cup and at that point her goal of creating her own magazine would be accomplished. VIDEOS We decided to created a web campaign that would launch with 3 teases. Teaser #1 - https://player.vimeo.com/video/205781454 Teaser #2 - https://player.vimeo.com/video/207163325 Teaser #3 - https://player.vimeo.com/video/208260763

Denver models, designers, and industry personnel to build my portfolio. I was motivated to make a difference and soon discovered Denver’s hidden gems. Denver is full of undiscovered talent and I felt compelled to promote these individuals through my photography. Photography is not all about the glamorous life, pretty faces or feeding people’s ego. Photography looks into your soul and tells a story. There’s no satisfaction in photographing a subject that others can’t connect with or bring value outside the physical form. A photograph should capture a person’s essence and soul.

Timeless Beauty is full of inspirational and riveting stories, compelling interviews, and high-end, vivid, alluring photography to indulge your senses from artists in Chicago, Denver, San Diego, and other US cities. DGARAY’s goal is to spotlight an array of artists to promote individuality and inspire others to believe in themselves and create work that is authentic to their character. In preparation for Timeless Beauty, we partnered with filmmaker, producer, director, and writer Ulysses Porter Brown. A man of many talents! Brown is a professional with 20 plus years

in the TV and film industry. He worked at STARZ Network to produce Hollywood campaigns, celebrity spotlights, and Encore Mini Series, while working on his personal projects to help manifest his creative vision to tell compelling stories! Brown has been a witness to the creation and growth of DGARAY since the beginning. After a brief creative discussion at our meeting location Barnes and Noble, he was pumped and exhilarated to tell DGARAY’s story. I was humbled and grateful for the opportunity to work with a mastermind that’s worked alongside Hollywood’s A-listers.

Timeless Beauty is referred to beauty that’s everlasting, unaffected by society, fashion trends or time. In the past six months, DGARAY magazine has been working religiously in bringing to life our second magazine publication: Timeless Beauty. We chose this theme to promote different forms of beauty that will live through time and raise awareness of what’s truly timeless beauty. We should celebrate everything that makes us unique and different from others.

DGARAY Founder, CEO Delmy Gooch is a professional photographer with a background in art, business management, and a Masters degree in Business Administration degree. Her roles as a Marine, head start director, college instructor, and photographer has defined her as a worldly and modern woman that continues to inspire others through her work. Her lens allows others to have a voice and shine. She has been involved in the Denver fashion community for the past five years, shooting for publications such as 303 Magazine, where she covers a vast array of fashion events, concerts, discovering and promoting local talent. Additionally, she has built an extensive network of valuable people in the Denver fashion scene, and she always does a great job of connecting and bringing the best together. Her goal is to produce work that will inspire others and make the impossible happen!

Art Director Kelly Mayer is an experienced professional graphic designer with 15 plus years in design and creative services. She graduated from Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design with a Bachelor’s in Graphic Design and has an Associate’s Degree in Arts from William Rainey Harper College. She has more than eight years of involvement in the magazine publishing industry: starting as an internship in the imaging department, working her way up to an assistant advertising art director , then making it all the way to an art director. She has extensive knowledge and expertise with current styles, concepts, software, practices and procedures within a creative atmosphere. Her specialties include creative direction, publications, marketing, brand identity, typography, logo design, websites, advertising and visual communication. Design is a passion, drive and motivation in her life and she applies her design, talent, and skill in all aspects of life, and with every opportunity she comes in contact with.

Featured Photographer Robin Fulton is a “photographic genius” and she’s not shy about owning up to it! She exudes confidence in her work, possesses a unique creative eye that fuels her imagination, and embraces her passion for art that’s reflected in each photograph that she strategically composes and breathes life into it. DGARAY teamed up with her to create powerful story telling imagery by bringing to existence the essence of our Timeless Beauty issue. Thus, raising the bar high within our photography standards, paving the way for other creative artists to be inspired, and motivated to create photographs that go deeper than what the lens can capture--what is authentic to the artist. It’s about creating stories within a photograph that will forever speak to you. She’s no stranger to the photography world and her work is a true testament that combines her photography degree and extensive experience with portraits, models and makeup, fashion shows, lifestyle and weddings, and commissioned photography. A true artiste! “I’ve photographed thousands of faces since the late 80’s, each with a story to tell. My work spans four decades and has evolved with the tides of life. As a new phase begins, perception alters, and thus your art emerges as if from an entirely new place. I’ve been a child, a student, a slut, a bride, a mother, a lady, a victim, and a survivor... But I’ve always been a photographer.”

Graphic Designer Anastasia is a graphic designer and photographer with a Business Degree and experienced in marketing and advertising. Originally from Russia, she has been calling Denver her home for the last five years. She has been working in the magazine industry for over three years, participating in fashion projects, local restaurants reviews and college publications. Her main passion is to create websites, advertisements, and marketing plans for small businesses. She believes that any business can succeed if it can manage to differentiate itself from its competitors. Ana speaks several languages, which allows her to communicate with different parts of the local market. She continues to thrive by learning new skills and talents which will assist her in advancing her career in the future.

BRANDAN RADER

PROFESSIONAL MODEL EMBRACING ANDROGYNY by Brandan Rader

Beauty is an art. Like all good artists you must find your style; the best method to express your individuality. My role as a Lifestyle Consultant is to help clients master their style. The professional term is Stychology. Stychology is applying the science of psychology to the art of beauty, to aid individuals in the discovery and empowerment of their authentic self. In essence, it is styling through psychology. 16

he industry instructed me to be masculine, to conform to the rigid gender roles espoused by our society. I began to study and focus on how to perform my gender. This dictated the clothes I wore, the way I spoke, how I styled by hair, my mannerisms, the way I walked--it trickled all the way down to the food I consumed! As a result of my conformity, I gained an influx of job opportunities. Ironically, the more I was accepted, the less comfortable I felt in my own skin. My image did not align with how I felt and with who I wanted others to perceive me as. I didn’t feel like Brandan, I felt like just another nondescript face in a magazine advertisement. I found myself wondering what I wanted my ad to say.

he incipience of Stychology arose from my passion for aesthetics and my educational background in psychology. Its development came to fruition within the environment of the beauty and fashion industry. I first moonlighted as a model at the age of 16. This endeavor has imparted me insight into the power of branding. The foremost responsibility of a model is to communicate the concept of the client’s brand--its image. The vocabulary of image includes garments, jewelry, body decorations, hair, and makeup. Similar to the brand of a company, your own personal image serves as medium for communicating your own brand. My own personal style is androgynous. Androgyny is an expression of gender that falls in the middle of the gender continuum. The social construction of gender (masculine/ feminine) should not to be misinterpreted for the sex assigned at birth (male/female), they are two different qualities, though they are not mutually exclusive. I recall thinking to myself, “Why can’t a male wear lace without his gender being challenged? It is because a specific group or majority of society attributes lace to femininity?” I determined for myself that a male can wear lace and still be a man.

n recent years, I have focused on opportunities that allow me to express my androgyny. My goal is to engender equality by letting my image scream authenticity. My experiences highlighted a struggle in our culture of who we want to be, who we think we should be, and what we need to be. My goal as a Lifestyle Consultant is to help my clients find their fashion spirit, own their image, and embrace who they wish to be. Your image can speak volumes, let’s give it a purpose.

EL SALV

VADOR STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGELA KLINKHAMER

50

EL SALVADOR by Angela Klinkhamer My first trip to El Salvador was in May of 2010. I stayed in El Tunco in a rad little bungalow overlooking the rivermouth at La Bocana. During this trip we surfed mainly along the west coast, taking just one overnight trip to the east to surf Las Flores. Although most of our days were spent surfing, we also got to see beautiful volcanoes, ancient Mayan ruins and the fishing village, La Libertad. It was during this trip that I started to fall in love with El Salvador. I visited El Salvador again in November of that same year. I was doing a medical mission in Guatemala and after its completion we decided to cross the border for a few days. During that time I stayed in El Zonte. El Zonte is a small surf village divided by a rivermouth. The rivermouth helps form a perfect right point break that produces consistent waves. I met amazing people, ate incredible food and surfed some pretty fun waves in El Zonte. This trip solidified my love for El Salvador. Since that last trip to El Zonte, I’ve traveled to many places, but I was left dreaming of El Salvador. The sounds of roosters waking me up at dawn, chicken and cattle roaming the streets, the delicious pupusas, endless right point breaks, warm water, consistent waves, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the tranquility and peaceful vibe, surfing until the point of exhaustion, naps in hammocks, the culture and the wonderful people. My list could go on and on. My friends laugh at me when I say, “This place has my heart.” But, it does. I needed to go back. Period. And so, this past week I found myself back in El Salvador, back in El Zonte to be exact.

TIMELESS BEAUTY 51

EL ZONTE El Zonte is a very small town and it was amazing to see some of the same people I had met three years ago. More amazingly, they remembered me, as I have not been in contact with some of them for years. El Zonte was just as I remember. This time we stayed on the east side of the rivermouth at K53 1/2 at a place called Casa Tia Tita. I cannot say enough good things about this place. The owners, as well as the caretakers are some of the most amazing people I have ever met. I can’t imagine this trip without them. Mario, Morena, and Laura took care of us from the moment we walked through the door. Mario was up with us at dark each morning ready to help us load our boards and take us wherever we wanted to surf, even if that meant driving to multiple locations. We came home from surfing each morning and an amazing El Salvadorian breakfast was on the table for us within minutes. I could write a whole post on the meals that Laura cooked for us each day, but briefly put, it was like staying in the best local restaurant in town. We asked for only local cuisine and each day we had three deliciously prepared El Salvadorian style meals. Besides the waves, this was definitely a highlight of our trip! El Zonte is a very small town and it was amazing to see some of the same people I had met three years ago. More amazingly they remembered me as I have not been in contact with some of them for years. Through word of mouth it had gotten back to one of the guys that I was in El Zonte and our last night he appeared at our house with his wife and new baby. It was so great to see him and meet his son. People always ask me why I love El Salvador so much and honestly this is part of it. Besides the food and the waves the people of El Salvador will keep me coming back.

SHAY DAVIS 64

AN ARTIST WHO CHALLENGES REALITY

Through his art Shay Davis provides powerful emotional responses to a world of real and fantasy stimuli. Each work challenges the viewer to create his own reality and understanding of the exciting mix of forms, objects and color within.

Davis began his art career at age five with an early interest in sports and superheroes. He still finds a way to combine a sense of carefree imagination combined with new meaning and strength in all of his work. Likewise, a sense of playfulness from life as a football star, surfer, and free spirit, is linked with his own internal challenges .

Davis has recently received recognition for his work including being nominated for 2011 New Contemporaries SD Art Prize and being one of eight artists selected as a “Heartist” for San Francisco General Hospital’s 2013 fundraiser, “Hearts and Heroes.” His original works grace the homes of actresses Halle Berry and Jayne Seymour, athletes such as Tony Hawk, Bill Garnett, and Koy Detmer, and music legend Gregg Allman.

ZIEGFELD REVISITED by Matt Duke

I was inspired by the French Folies Bergere, Florenz Ziegfeld, who created the Ziegfeld Follies in 1907. The Follies were lavish revues featuring glamorous chorus girls in elaborate costumes. I knew very little about the Ziegfeld Follies when makeup artist Alyria Salazar mentioned that it was her dream to do a Ziegfeld themed shoot. A web search led me to the work of Robert Cheney Johnston and I knew we had to make this a project happen. Robert Cheney Johnston was one of the great jazzage portrait photographers. He is best known for

his portraits of Ziegfeld Follies girls and silent film stars during the 1920’s-1930’s. During his 15 years working with Ziegfeld, he photographed hundreds of showgirls including early glamour icons such as Fanny Brice, Billie Burke, Louise Brooks, Ruby Keeler, Hazel Forbes and Barbara Stanwick. In creating the Ziegfeld Revisited series, we attempted to recreate the style of Johnston’s portraits as faithfully as possible. We took great care to emulate the sets, lighting, props, hair and makeup. Apart from a few color images, the images were processed to simulate the photographic methods of the era. We chose our models carefully. Prudence DeVilliere is a professional burlesque performer and had long

been a fan of the Ziegfeld Follies. Prudence was already very familiar with images that inspired our shoot and absolutely channeled the poses and expressions of Johnston’s subjects (including a dead-on recreation of the iconic Louise Brooks). Julia Morgan is a classic beauty whose penetrating eyes and exquisite body were a perfect fit for the project. We took a little artistic license having Kim Vu as one of our Ziegfeld girls. Given the customs of the day, there were no Asian showgirls in the original Follies. But we loved Kim’s look and graceful poses and decided that the lack of ethnic diversity in the original Follies would remain their loss, not ours. I’m fairly certain that if Robert Chaney Johnston was alive today, he’d agree. We hope you enjoy this homage to vintage glamour!

RENAISSANCE NUDE ART by Delmy Gooch

A great amount of women are dissatisfied with their bodies. These women deal with eating disorders, depression, and fulfilling unhealthy body standards. Social Media has put more pressure on being thin at all costs and exploiting the sacredness of the body. Young women compare themselves to digitally altered or photoshopped images of celebrities or public figures, which is not the real representation of the average woman. Instead, it has given birth to more criticism to how women present their bodies to the world. In order to freely embrace and show your nudity to the world, you have to be thin, lose your curves, have a smaller waist size, bigger breasts, liposuction, longer hair, and have other cosmetic surgeries to fit an unrealistic image of the woman. The average woman is voluptuous, curvy, and imperfectly beautiful. We need to empower women and not shame them for how they were created. Our bodies are sacred and how we embrace our nudity reflects on our values and own body image.

21ST CENTURY ADAM AND EVE

In modern times, there are many conflicting outlooks regarding beauty standards and nudity. In the Renaissance age, the human form was considered a paragon of beauty. Artists sculpted and painted nude images to admire and honor the body

in its truest and purest form. God created man in his image. It’s a work of art. That’s why Adam and Eve innocently paraded in the Garden of Eden unafraid of their nudity. Shame and guilt exposed their nudity and they resorted to covering up to hide their sin.

athan D. Palmer is a 28-year-old National Football League (NFL) wide receiver. He has played for teams like the Chicago Bears, the San Francisco 49rs, the Oakland Raiders and the Denver Broncos. The NFL is a dream that many American boys chase as they discover the love for the sport and sportsmanship. They will do anything to make that dream a reality. Being an NFL wide receiver was everything he’d been working towards. Yet through football, he also reconnect with his first love, music. Palmer immersed himself in music by spending his off-season time recording in the studio and writing. “What I live is what I write about,” said Palmer. Palmer is no stranger to music. He’s been fascinated with music since he was four-years-old. He discovered his talent by learning how to play various instruments and becoming heavily involved in the church. He has shared the stage with Drake and Trey Songz. For him, this is the beginning of a new dream. How long have you

been making music?

I have been playing instruments since I was four and have been performing live music since my freshman year in college.

What do you take

away from music?

Music is the way I express myself. Not only do I express myself through making music but also through listening to other’s music and applying it to my life.

What inspires you?

Everyday life inspires me. Whether that’s things I personally experience or things I witness my peers experience. It’s all inspiring to me!

How do you deal

with obstacles in your music career? One obstacle I think I face currently is the fact that most people don’t take athletes serious when it comes to making music. We tend to get a much harder road when it comes to people giving us an honest listen.

Are you involved with community?

I’m very involved in my community and I volunteer for local events. Back home in Elkhart, I started a youth foundation to help kids develop skills that will help them not only with sports and music, but with academics and life in general.

88

What do you do to

stay calm and focused? Meditation in the mornings helps me focus. And gospel music helps calm me down!

What’s your favorite

thing to do with your time off from life?

My favorite thing to do is something relaxing, but fun. Sometimes it’s as simple as going to see a dope movie or something random like go-carts with the homies.

If you could travel

anywhere in the world where would it be?

I literally want to go see what all the hype is in Dubai! It looks super dope, so I think that would be on top of the list right now.

If you could have coffee

with one celebrity who would that be? And why?

I would have coffee with Usher hands down. I feel like the amount of music jewels he’d be able to share with me would be priceless yet super helpful.

My biggest fear is failure. I don’t ever want to fail at anything I do.

Football wise my biggest accomplishment was going to the Super Bowl, as I experienced something most people only dream of. On the music side, I think opening for Drake was definitely a highlight of mine.

Why do you want to

make music?

Music give me a chance to share my life experiences and hopefully inspire my listeners. Whether that’s to get out and live like me or just letting someone know they are not alone in life situations.

If you could perform at

any festival or venue where would that be?

I don’t know if this counts, but I seriously would die if I got to perform at the Super Bowl one day! Ultimate pie in the sky.

Who are your role models?

My parents are definitely my role models. They did so much and worked so hard over the years. I love them and want to be as good to my kids in the future as they were in raising my brother and I.

Have you always felt

comfortable on stage?

I’ve always been comfortable on stage. I think playing instruments and singing in church helped with that over the years.

BERNARD BUDDHAKAI FROM DENVER, COLORADO AND CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 90

For over 22 years, Buddhakai has been writing, recording, and producing music. He grew up on the east coast, in a small town known as Carteret, New Jersey. DGARAY interviews this inspiring artist who plow through the challenges to prove peace in the end. “I spent way too many years putting out both good, and drastically destructive, music as a cry from my heavily induced, drug-addicted states. Now my goal is to share my beautiful experiences of freedom from it, in a hard-hitting, crush it on the mic type of format!” - Bernard Buddhakai

QA &

What do you take away from music?

I pray I take nothing away from music, outside of inspiration, hope, expression, and in certain songs--beauty. Hopefully, I can offer the same in return.

Where do you see yourself career wise in the music world?

I see myself at a capacity where it can financially support my family, friends, and a healthy lifestyle.

Even if my music doesn’t, I see myself continuing to write, perform, and share it regardless if I never earn a dollar from it. My hope is to inspire listeners, not just to make music, or find success and wealth, but to discover a deeper sense of themselves, and the joy I’ve found in that.

What inspires you?

God inspires me. Love inspires me. Challenges inspire me. And hard working, hard-loving people inspire the heck out of me!

Are you involved with your community? If so, how?

I stay connected with my new YouTube and Facebook platform called, “A-LIVE VERSE SESSION with Buddhakai.” This allows me to meet and rap with a collection of hungry Denver artists. Other than that, I’m connecting with people at a deeper level, even at work, where the majority of my customers become some of dearest friends.

What are some of the

major accomplishments you have achieved in you career?

Musically, I was featured on the DnD Project II album which featured amazing artists like Guru, Krumb Snatcha, Agalla, Big Daddy Kane, Sadat X, Buckshot, and more. However, I submitted a throw-away track, “When it Comes to a War,” which was an “okay” song in order to save all of my greater work for my own release. Looking back, I wish I would’ve dropped something off of my favorite album, Clock Strikes Thirteen, which to this day, is still one of my greatest accomplishments-creatively. But if there really was an accomplishment that I can appreciate, it was forming the group Allied Forces, AF Entertainment LLC, with a huge group of super talented artists at the age of 16. Unfortunately, my love for drugs, cocaine, and crystal methamphetamine, was greater than my love for music and the group. But that was then.

What is your biggest fear?

Nothing. I can lose it all, the wonderful house, ALL of the money, the awesome job, the brand new cars I get to drive, and dare I say the one person I love the most in this world, my Jamie, all the way down to losing my last breath. Regardless what happens, I already know God’s got me.

What’s your favorite

thing to do with your time off from life’s obligations? That would be death. I’m not separated from life even in my job. I’ve learned to enjoy my job just as much as I enjoy going to the Four Seasons Spa or fine dining at an amazing restaurant. I think

that’s one of the best things I’ve discovered and hope to share in my music.

If you could perform at

any festival or venue where would that be?

I would perform anywhere. Intimately in front of one or two people that I get to share my music with or the ultimate dream of packing Madison Square Garden!!!

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would that be?

I would travel EVERYWHERE! I love experiencing new things. But the next places on my radar are Greece or Thailand.

If you could have coffee with

one celebrity who would that be? And why?

I would have coffee with Eminem. I admire his skill level, writing techniques, and more importantly, what he writes about when he writes about the depths of his life.

Who are your role models?

So many, starting with my mom and dad, but for small pieces of each of them. Then there are musicians and artists like Eminem, Bizzle, 2Pac, and authors like Vishen Lakhiani, Tony Robbins, Eckhart Tolle, and Rhonda Byrne, that would make exceptional role models at different capacities.

Have you always felt

comfortable on a stage?

YES! I love the stage! However, there’s a short moment where I get nervous right before going

on, but disappears as soon as the connection between me and the audience happens!

Why

do make music?

you

want

to

I want to make music because it’s an amazing medium of art that holds great opportunity and power to inspire. Plus I love playing with words and flow.

What do you do to stay fit and healthy?

How do I stay healthy? Here’s a plug. Download to MyFitnessPal app. I also joined Kinobody Warrior Shredding Program. I do Cardio on Mondays, Fridays and Saturday. Strength Training Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. And Wednesdays are my rest day. Most importantly, I eat 95% organic, whole foods, and stay under 2400 calories per day.

What do you do to stay calm and focused?

Breathe, pray, and love to stay focused.

What are you limitations?

Nothing. With God, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! – Mathew 19:26

“God, love, and challenges, hard-loving people, all inspire.” - Bernard Buddhakai. TIMELESS BEAUTY 93

left is to access the problem at hand and figure out what YOU can do to break through it.

What

message will you send the next generation?

I say “Good Luck.” No, I’m only kidding. Honestly, the main thing for me has always been to never be afraid to be yourself and grow the confidence to take charge. We’re living in a time where right now it is the most acceptable to unapologetically be 100% yourself. I’d even go as far as to say it’s the new trend and what’s in style! So don’t worry about what people will think or how they’ll judge that “weird” idea. You never know what taking action could do for you so please, take your shot! Every time!

I believe empowerment is something that is self- defined for everyone. It means being the absolute best version of myself and taking control of my course.

you could have coffee with one celebrity who would that be?

were different and understood your purpose?

Donald Glover because A: It would make for the most interesting conversation out of my options, and B: I’d like to pick at his mind a bit, he’s a smart dude.

When did you feel you

Once I hit the age of 16, that’s when I really started branching out, being myself and developing my own sound and personality with no restrictions.

What

legacy would you like to leave behind?

It’s very possible to take control of your life and make an amazing way for yourself just doing what you love. I see far too many people complaining about being stuck in a situation they don’t want to be in, but they never take the action to break free from those chains. I want to show you what happens when you do.

What

are some of your limitations and how do you overcome them?

Over time of I’ve learned that things like limitations and obstacles are only but a selfinduced poison. So my simple answer to this question is just a very healthy change in mindset! Once you understand that it’s all on you, all that’s

If

Who are your role models?

I have quite a few but if I had to pick my top three. I would have to say: Will Smith, Gary Vaynerchuk and my Grandfather, Wendell Baker

Why

do make music?

you

want

to

I’ve always had such a tremendous amount of love and respect for music. So why not give it a shot myself? Sure enough when I did, I fell even deeper in love with it. The passion always comes first.

What

do you do to stay calm and focused?

Listen to music of course! I have playlists of what I like to call “thinking music” that really get me by when I need to sit down and focus. For inquiring minds I’m currently listening to BadBadNotGood..

What is worth fighting for?

I’m going to borrow from entrepreneur Tai Lopez and say health, wealth, love and happiness for sure. Whether your own or someone else’s, all four of these things should definitely be maintained and cared for with the utmost highest effort.

What

do you take away from music?

Plenty of things. Mainly things like learning myself as a person due to constant self-reflection and expression. Also just learning the joy and appreciation of being able to craft and create something. It’s taught me to have such a wide appreciation for many things I would normally pay no mind to.

What

are some of your major accomplishments you have acquired in your career? I’ve been blessed enough to be able to do my fair share of shows for big audiences such as opening for people like Dizzy Wright and Jarren Benton. I’ve also been able to collaborate with artists like Futuristic and most recently I’ve been working with Tech N9ne and Strange Music. There’s plenty more in store and on the way for me. So be on the look out!

What is your biggest fear?

Before I give you my biggest fear, it’s important to give you my greatest power. I believe I can never truly lose because I have the fire beneath me that always tells me to get right back up and keep hammering. I see too many take their first few stumbles and ditch their dreams away because they don’t want to deal with the difficulty. Not me. To me there is nothing more beautiful than the heat of the journey. Of course there will always be hard times, but you have to be able to look back on those hardships and learn to appreciate them and what they’ve taught you. Now, as far as my biggest fear goes, 100% it would be losing this perspective.

EDDIE COOPER An enigma in a lot of aspects; self-reflective and who values people and knowledge. One to treat others as he wants to be treated in return. It’s not easy to get to know exactly who he is. Unless you were raised with him, raised him, or he gave you the opportunity to do so.

QA &

How do you define

empowerment?

Empowerment is the act of transferring ones energy to someone else to help them reach a goal they didn’t realize they could achieve--making them realize their capabilities. Energy does not die, it transfers. It’s one of the most beautiful things in life as long as the energy is positive.

What inspires you?

96

What gives me inspiration is people, nature, and the possibilities. When you see people accomplish things against all odds. As an African American in this society, it’s plain to see that the system is setup for us to fail. When I see people become what successful, and most importantly happy, against all odds, I’m inspired. Nature is like seeing the face of God at times. I don’t think people take enough time to enjoy what is provided to them as a birth right. The world is beautiful and we have been blessed to be apart of it. I do not think we take into account how great it is to be conscious enough to enjoy such awesomeness. When you drive through the mountains that touch the clouds, stand before an ocean that seems to never end, witness animals with colors so vivid that a rainbow would be ashamed-that’s when one can understand that you are part of something greater then you. That’s inspiring to me. I understand some people might not have those experiences due to circumstances, but they should seek out what is laid before them instead

“I want to lay down every night knowing I achieved, learned, or did something that I didn’t know the day before.” - Eddie Cooper of excepting what they have been given. This world is just as much yours as anybody else’s. The possibilities are endless. That inspires me.

What are you doing to

overcome difficulties?

Limitations are all mental. Society and people will always try to invoke fear or situations that may seem hard to overcome, but it’s up to the individual to understand that they can do anything if they put their mind to it. What one puts out in the atmosphere, they will get back. I think one of the biggest issues I encounter is how I disappear into myself. Sometimes I just don’t want to be bothered. It’s not beneficial to business. I can overcome this by just handling my business accordingly if I want to reach my maximum potential, and I will.

What do you do to stay

calm and focused?

I breath deep and stay focused. Breathing methods are a great was to slow your heart rate. What I mean about being present is being conscious of your purpose in the moment, and of your surroundings. Be thankful for the moment and the ability to be able. I think a lot of times people have tendency to let their minds drift elsewhere during when they could be having an experience of a lifetime.

What message will you send the next generation?

I can just tell the next generation is the latest rendition of greatness. They are essentially super humans. They have more capabilities and resources than any other human being that has come before them, so there is no excuse not to be great. All they have to do is apply themselves. Don’t listen to what other people are trying to tell you to do if it does not agree with your soul. Do you to the best of your ability and everything will fall in place.

What inspires you?

People inspire me. The possibility of touching someone else through my music. That connection is what every artist strives for. Good music lets people know that the way they think and the way they feel is valid.

Where do you see yourself

career wise in the music industry?

I will always be an artist at heart. It’s my therapy, but as I grow, I start to recognize other opportunities that this game presents. I see myself definitely ghost-writing for other artists, executive producing, a developing artist, and having and maintaining a label.

What are some of the

limitations/obstacles you face with your music? I wouldn’t say there are no limitations or obstacles “in” my music or anyone else’s for that matter. If they like it, that’s what matters. Now if we are speaking on the business end, there is always something left to be desired.

What are some of the

greatest accomplishments in your career?

Putting together quality music is an accomplishment in itself because that I have gained the respect of the people. I’ve done two solo albums and am working on a third. I have two group albums and about to work on the next. I’ve gained meaningful relationships and valuable connections through music. I’ve opened up for great artists such as Jeezy, Big Sean, and Wiz Khalifa. I’ve also started a clothing line called “The F.O.O.L.E.Y.S,” which stands for “The Feeling. Of. Outspoken. Living. Enriching. Your. Soul.

If I could travel anywhere In

the world, where would it be?

If I could travel in anywhere in the world right now I would probably have to say Ghana, Senegal, Uganda, or The Congo. It would definitely be somewhere on the African continent.

What do you do on your time off from music?

I travel when I’m not working on music. Experiences are important to people, but especially to an artist. The more an artist knows and sees, the greater the vision they can relay to the people.

How long have you been

Later I found hip-hop music in my teen years, so I have been playing music most of my life JESSA | I picked up a guitar in 8th grade and taught myself. I started writing songs right away. My parents and sister were also musicians and I always felt that I wasn’t good as them so I kept my music to myself. When I was 31 I played my first open mic.

What do you take away

from music?

JORDAN | Music gives me life, it gives my existence purpose, it is my therapy, and my first love. JESSA | Music is me facing my fears, and myself. When I write, I exercise my deepest fears, desires and insecurities. When I perform I face my stage fright and let people hear my true self. It’s terrifying and it gives me strength. I’ve also met amazing friends through music. It gives me a reason to keep growing and trying.

Where do you see yourself

career wise in the music world?

JORDAN | I see myself licensing music for film and TV, and continuing all my current projects. JESSA | Eventually, I would like to learn to produce as well. I want to get better at guitar and try other instruments. I would love to collaborate and write for other artists and one day I would like to hear my songs in a movie.

Music is a universal language that crosses all barriers. I can sing about my personal pain, but you can identify and heal with me. I’m inspired by people who face opposition and persevere. I’m inspired by change, vulnerability and truth. I’m inspired by the beauty we rarely take time to notice or cultivate.

What are some of the

limitations/obstacles you face with your music?

JORDAN | Money is always an obstacle as an independent artist, my ideas are often beyond my budget. JESSA | My self-doubt is my biggest obstacle. I also have three kids and a very real life to manage while desperately trying to create a life I’m proud of. My fear of failure is a big setback at times. I just want to look back and be proud.

How are you overcoming

these limitations?

JORDAN | Staying busy, building the fan base and releasing as much music as possible is helping me move past my limitations. JESSA | Every time I step on stage I’m overcoming my doubts and fears. Every time I take a risk and choose to believe in myself and my music, I’m conquering my fear. I just choose to keep trying no matter what, because the alternative is not something I can accept.

Are you involved with your community? If so, how?

JORDAN | We like to be involved in the community. Jessa and I have played for a school and talked about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. We have played for a women’s shelter as well. JESSA | We care very much about using music as a tool. We love getting opportunities to connect with people. We know that we are all connected and we are blessed to have been a part of some amazing events that were focused on some very real issues. I certainly hope that we have more chances to give back like that.

What are some of the

major accomplishments you have acquired in you career?

JORDAN | I fulfilled my dream of playing at Red Rocks Amphitheater two times in one year. JESSA | Getting to sing at Red Rocks, opening up for Jurassic 5, playing the Colorado showcase at SXSW, and our album release in 2015. I never even thought I would have a music career so the whole ride has been an immeasurable blessing.

Why do you want to

make music?

JORDAN | I have no choice in the matter, music makes me. JESSA | Because I have to. It’s how I grow. It’s my way of healing from and releasing the things in my life. It’s just a thing I have to do. Like eating and breathing. Sometimes it’s hard, and it hurts. Sometimes it’s like heaven on earth.

What are you limitations?

JORDAN | Finances, and time limit me. JESSA | What he said. But in reality, there are no limitations. We are free to create no matter what. We are limited in a business sense, but never limited in creativity itself.

STEPHEN Fitness & Health

QA

Stephen G. Fritscher, a 24-year-old military veteran from Menifee, California gives us a personal look into his private life as a Marine, fitness trainer, Certified Rock Steady Boxing Coach, health advocate, and young entrepreneur furthering his education to better serve his clients in reaching their personal goals. What makes Stephen different from others in the fitness Industry?

&

How long have you

been a Fitness Trainer?

I have been a trainer for about three years now. However, I consider myself to be “in” fitness for over a decade now. It started when I was 13 and started lifting weights for high school football. I fell in love with it and maintained the passion ever since. I got certified before I ended my military service and immediately started working as a trainer.

What are some of your limitations/obstacles?

I don’t like to think of limitations too often, especially if they are just mental. I never want to fall victim to negative perceptions. However, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been challenged in my life. I think growing up without a father had an impact on me in some ways, and my mother passing away when I was just 17 was a difficult time. My younger years in general were, in the eyes of others, tough but I really just looked at this as life and never really thought much of it. It is only as I get older that I realize how important it is to have some stability and guidance when you’re young. Some how, some way, I over came the “statistically” inevitable and built my own path. I would say one of the biggest challenges I have had as an adult was getting out of the military. I was 22-years-old, a Marine Sargent and had a great career ahead of me. However, I knew it wasn’t everything I wanted in life so I went with my gut, instead of logic, and got out. I had responsibility in the Marines and that gave me purpose.

98

But when a veteran returns to the civilian world, it’s not usually traumatic experiences that drive them into a depression but the lack of purpose and direction. I am a strong, resilient man but I was still lost when I left the service but I have since found my purpose in clients and the people that count on me to help them overcome their obstacles.

How are you different

from others in your field? I would say it’s my transparency and being open with people is what makes me different. I am open about how I feel as well as willing to admit my mistakes and I think this is far more important in the eyes of a potential client or relationship. I think this is why I didn’t do so well in a corporate environment, where closing a sale may take priority over the welfare of the consumer. Transparency builds trust, and people don’t want to buy things from people they don’t trust. In my opinion, being transparent and relatable builds quality relationships rather than quantity, which is what I prefer.

Are you involved with your community? If so, how?

I am not involved in the standard sense of going to city council meetings or community service but I am involved in the Temecula Rock Steady Boxing program. It is a program that helps people who have Parkinson’s disease manage their symptoms through exercise. Parkinson’s Disease is a neurological disease that has no known cause or cure. It results in deficiency of dopamine in the body, which is a neurotransmitter that is essential for many functions, including movement and mood. Symptoms usually involve major depression and abnormal movements like tremors or freezing episodes. The program helps people manage and sometimes reduce the symptoms of the disease so they can regain some quality back into their lives. I like to think of it as the ultimate support group.

What

are some of the major accomplishments you have acquired in your fitness career?

Well I’m not a pro bodybuilder or sponsored athlete or anything so I would say my major accomplishments are just personal. I recently became a Certified Rock Steady Boxing Coach, and I’ll be launching my fitness website soon. I continue to work towards my education to be a chiropractor and helping my clients or anyone reach their goals.

What do you do to stay calm and focused?

Staying calm and focused is definitely a challenge for me. I have been victim to “paralysis by analysis” or over thinking. I have one of those minds that thinks about all the things, all at once, all the time. Despite all of this I still remain pretty calm if I organize my thoughts, manage my stress and strive for confidence in everything I do. Focus is a little more difficult but with a todo list, time management and a little bit of caffeine, I can do it. I also attribute a lot of my mental state to biology. For example, I will feel much more stressed and unfocused when I am not keeping up with exercise, nutrition and sleep that supports it.

If you could have coffee

with one person you admire who would that be?

Well that is a very difficult question. It would depend on the knowledge I wished to gain. If I had to pick one I would say Elliot Hulse. He was probably one of the first informal mentors that I had when I got really interested in personal growth and development. I used to watch his videos on YouTube and he had so many, in so many different areas of life. He’s very strong all around which is what I strive to be as a trainer and man.

What trend would you like to set or have set?

I love that fitness in the last five years or so has become so popular. But I don’t

like how there is so much focus into the more superficial attractions in fitness. The barely-clothed women, abnormally developed physiques, and all the stuff that goes into that. Yes, everyone wants to build muscle, be leaner and look better naked--including me. I just think that health is being pushed aside and the psychological effects of fitness standards today may be doing more harm than good. The aesthetics and external confidence is a by-product of the process of constant physical, mental and emotional adaptations that come with fitness. I think someone’s motive to be fit should never be superficial. I think if you can dig deep and understand “why” being fit will make you feel more confident, the results will bring much more happiness, and developing that level of self-awareness is the first challenge of the process.

What are some things

you would like, and would change about the world and why?

I could say something cliché like, “End world hunger or world peace,” but that’s too simple. I would rather bring education to the world. It’s not sustainable to temporarily give the hungry food or use force to suppress nations with conflicting beliefs. However, by providing knowledge and awareness to people there are endless possibilities. In my opinion, that’s the deepest level of help we could give.

Are you comfortable in your own skin?

I don’t like the word comfortable because it reminds me of settling and in my opinion no one should ever settle. I would like to replace it with the word confident. No, I have not always felt confident in my own skin and it has been a struggle. These struggles used to be more external or physical in nature. Now I see every physical confidence barrier as something more deep. For example, if I see a little more body fat around the love handles then I will be less confident in my nutrition or training. If I am less confident to speak in front of a crowd then I could be less confident in what I actually am speaking about. Simply put, if my external confidence lacks, it’s because I am lacking confidence in my ability to produce the physical results. If I put forth the energy in my abilities and I am still not confident with the result, I will usually just chalk this up to a weakness and not one of my strengths. I don’t pay much attention to my weaknesses and by capitalizing on my strengths, I can be more confident in my own skin.

RESOLUTION RESULTS

by Cara Caitlin The New Year brings about many New Year’s resolutions. As a personal trainer and yoga instructor in California, I see gyms and studios swarm with people on January 1st, but by mid-March, only a few of the New Year’s new faces are still coming in. It saddens me to see people lose their long-term vision and health benefits because they allow a few days or an incident to derail them from the vigor they had at the beginning of their journey. Instead of reassessing and getting back on-track for their goal, they stop trying completely and begin to focus on reasons why they “can’t” make the change. Defining our goal, understanding why we chose it in the first place, identifying what can trigger us to fall “off-track”, and accepting that any change takes work to implement are a few ways we can begin to set ourselves up for success. Photographer | ARCHIE CARPENTER 100

Photographer | BRIAN KAMINSKI

T

o turn our resolution into results we must identify and define our goal. Whether we want to improve the way we act or feel, or have a physical or fitness goal (wanting to be stronger, leaner, more flexible, etc.) we cannot achieve anything over one night. We must practice patience as we take on the (initially uneasy) task of making a lifestyle change. Over time the changes will be adapted into our habits, but until they are, it helps to remember our health goals are a day-to-day journey that lead us to a stronger and happier future. Keeping the long-term goal is what is important. To envision what we want, it helps to understand and remind ourselves why we chose that goal and what it will lend our life. When we simply state, “I want to be stronger” or “I want to be leaner,” we should strive to add the reasons why. Do we want to be stronger to accomplish something like a run, a hike, or an adventure race? Do we want to be leaner because we want our body to feel safer in activities when playing with our children, to help our blood pressure, or to wear an outfit we like? The “why” is different for every single person, but the importance is the same. When something happens and our progress slows down or our routine is interrupted, it is easy to talk ourselves out of pursuing it. However, if we remember why we set up that goal in the first place, getting back on track and pursuing what we want can become important to us again. Noticing what can distract us from our goal is imperative. The most common thing I see in my classes are new students spending their time looking around the room comparing the way their body looks or moves to others, as opposed to experiencing the class and gaining benefit for themselves. Feeling the need to compare ourselves to others does little more than distract us from listening to what our own body needs and how we really feel about ourselves. Being built a certain way, or having a certain amount of flexibility is not commentary on who we are as individuals, they are just unproductive judgments that do not help us.

If we catch ourselves comparing what we do to others, notice if it is to feel better about what we are doing (by talking someone else down), or to feel worse about ourselves (by thinking we are not as good as someone else). Neither of these are positive places for our thoughts. Bringing our awareness to why we are comparing can help us begin to break the habit. Take the time to ask, “Can I look at someone for who they are and not how they stack up against me? Can I look at a celebrity magazine cover, or someone’s Facebook photo and not feel like I need to look like that person? Can I enjoy my entire day without comparing what I looked like or was able to do today to what I could do at a different (younger) time in my life?” When we can answer “yes” to these questions, it will become easier to reach our goals instead of being distracted by everyone else around us. At the completion of I invite my students to give themselves accomplishments from

my yoga classes, to take the time credit for their the last hour. I ask

them to take a few moments to reflect on the energy it took to get to the gym/studio that day, to acknowledge the time they took to practice/workout, to recognize the work they put into their practice. Lastly, we focus on everything our bodies did that day (not what they did not or could not do). Then I ask that we end our time together in a place of thankfulness for our own body’s movement and breath. Goals are personal, and the path to achieving them is different for each person. Thus, it does not help to compare ourselves to anyone else but to accept ourselves and lay out a plan that is best for who we are. Learning to wake up and accept who we are today, in how we feel physically and emotionally, is the best way to lay a solid foundation to build a healthy lifestyle and achieve long-term success. When we learn to appreciate the energy and time we put into things, as well as, acknowledge the work it takes and be patient for the results that appear over time, it is a much smoother journey to reach our goals both in the gym and in ourselves, both on our yoga mat and off it.

HAVOC by Sophie Bushman

Meet Havilah Curtis. Though you may not know her just yet, this 35-year-old competitive roller derby skater, catch wrestler, and working mother of three is on the fast track to athletic world domination. Raised in Denver, Colorado, Curtis has been a competitor all her life. Starting at age four, she trained as a competitive gymnast. Throughout her nearly 12 year gymnastics career, Curtis amassed great levels of success, even training to compete in the 2000 Olympic trials. Despite a long break from athletics to become a mother and raise her family, Curtis never lost what she calls, “The athletic itch.” Now back, and stronger than ever, she devotes her life to rigorous training for her athletic endeavors.

T

he first of these is roller derby, a high intensity, high contact sport played on quad roller skates. Havilah Curtis, known on the track simply as, “Havoc,” found roller derby in 2012 after a stint as a speed skater and decided to give it a shot because, “It brings together everything she’s ever been training for into one sport.” Now in her fifth season, Curtis has quickly worked her way up the ranks to become one of the top jammers for her team, The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls. She credits her success both as a skater and as a team leader to her tireless focus and consistency. Speaking to her consistency, she notes that, “My teammates can always count on me, my coaches can always count on me if I’m needed to go in at the last second... whatever needs to be done and however it needs to be done, I’m always 100% willing to make it happen.” Next up is Curtis’ budding career as a catch wrestler. Beginning in 2016, Curtis began catch wrestling with Scientific Wrestling, training under coach Jake Shannon. Scientific Wrestling is a leader in the sport of catch wrestling, which

102

can be described as, “Both an alternative and complement to other popular combat sports like Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, and Amateur Wrestling.” Curtis’ drive to progress as a wrestler is intense: she spends many hours training both in the gym and on the mats. Her mental game is just as strong though. Any frustrations or mental roadblocks are met with her mentality of, “Fake it ‘till you make it: Never show that you’re tired, never show that you’re frustrated, and always have the belief that you are the best.” This mentality, in combination with her strong athleticism, has allowed her to be the strongest, smartest wrestler she can be. She has no doubts or fears when it comes to reading her opponent or ensuring that she’s never pinned or submitting. So what’s next for Curtis? She plans on leading The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls 5280 Fight Club to Division one playoffs in the fall while continuing to train and grow her career as a competitive catch wrestler. Also in her sight is competing on the next season of American Ninja Warrior,

and with her supreme athleticism and fierce tenacity, there are no doubts that she can take that, too. Curtis would like to extend special recognition to her roller derby team, The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls (www.rockymountainrollergirls. com) along with her sponsors Roller Derby Elite (www.rollerderbyelite.com) and House of Sk8 (www.houseofsk8.net). She would also like to acknowledge coach Jake Shannon at Scientific Wrestling (www.ScientificWrestling.com) and the Genesis Training Center.

There are many paths in life. Some we choose and other paths unexpectedly find us. Living in Colorado was a place I never chose to live in. It was never part of “The BIG Picture.” However, Colorado found its way into my life. It revealed its beauty through nature, the mountain life, sporting events, and the pride of it’s people. Colorado became a creative canvas. An opportunity to let go of any false notions and misconceptions about what Colorado is, and what it’s capable of producing. We don’t have to travel to New York or Milan to discover talent and experience the work of creative geniuses and masterminds in fashion, music, and all other forms of art influences. I was blessed enough to artistically collaborate and create art with many talented individuals, from photographers, models, songwriters, musicians, beauty and hair gurus, creative directors, fashion designers, and other industry leaders paving the way for others. Timeless Beauty Fashion Show and Launch Party was created to unite and celebrate Colorado Talent. DGARAY is more than a brand. It’s a movement composed “of talent with a mission to create high quality work to inspire, empower, and elevate others. These are the faces and moments when you love what you’re doing. Thank you! DGARAY will continue to spotlight talent across the globe!”
