Vintage Mosaic Eggs

Original design by artist Rita Schwab. MATERIALS Small Plastic Easter Eggs 2 Packages Diamond Tech Vintage Mosaics™ - Black Toile (covers 3-4 small eggs) 2 cups Jennifer’s Mosaics™ beige mosaic grout #77201 Mosaic Glue Rubber gloves Old towel Sponge Hammer #2094 Tile nippers (optional) Measuring Cup Tablespoon

PROJECT TIP: • Use vinegar to return PH to your hands should you grout without gloves. • Use different size plastic eggs for more variety. • Use broken china or pottery in lieu of VINTAGE MOSAIC™ pieces. • For hard to fit tile pieces, hold tile up to the area to be fitted and outline with a marker the portion of the tile that needs to be nipped away. • Grout color can add drama. Add paint to white grout for custom décor colors. • Mosaic eggs make great centerpieces when nestled in a silver bowl. You can also place one at each dinner setting and prop a place card against it.

DIRECTIONS 1. Cover work area with newspaper to protect work surface. 2. Collect all supplies needed for the project. Place them on your surface. Note: Broken VINTAGE MOSAIC™ pieces may have sharp edges. Be careful when working with them. 3. To break VINTAGE MOSAIC™ tile pieces for mosaic, wrap one piece in towel. Gently tap with hammer against tile. Continue until broken pieces are about 3/4” or less across; remove from towel. Continue to break remaining VINTAGE MOSAIC™ until there are enough pieces to cover plastic egg. MOSAIC NOTE: In lieu of hammer, a tile nipper or tile scorer/breaker may be used to cut and shape VINTAGE MOSAIC™ pieces. 4. Use a mosaic adhesive to glue the VINTAGE MOSAIC™ pieces to egg, fitting pieces close together to cover entire surface. Note: Spaces between the VINTAGE MOSAIC™ pieces will be more pronounced on rounded surfaces; more grout may show on finished piece than expected. 5. If additional tile pieces are required to fit particular spaces, repeat Step 3. 6. Place 1 cup of grout into a mixing bowl and slowly add water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Mix with craft stick or spoon until the grout reaches “fudge-like” consistency. If it is too watery, add more dry grout in small amounts until the consistency is correct. 7. Wearing disposable gloves use fingers to work “grout” into the spaces between the VINTAGE MOSAIC™ pieces. Wait about 15 minutes for grout to set. 8. Using damp sponge, gently wipe mosaic surface to smooth grout lines and remove excess grout. Buff surface with dry towel to shine. DELPHIGLASS.COM

Who would not want to put money in this adorable nest egg bank? Watching your saving grow through this cute glass block couldn’t make saving easier.

Nest Egg Bank DESIGNED BY: “The Diamond Tech Team”

PROJECT TIP: Read all of the KraftyBlok™ Image Art instructions before starting your project. Large profile decals are fragile, handle with care. This project requires the use of a laser printer, not an inkjet. MATERIALS #426112 KraftyBlok™ Mini #427200 KraftyBlok™ Image Art Paper Nest on a Branch Small Flocked Speckled Eggs Small Glass Bird Ornament 20 each of 1" and ½" Coordinating Ribbon Hot Glue Gun and Glue Paper Towels Bowl for water Scissors DIRECTIONS 1. Find your nest egg picture and copy it to any software on your computer that allows you to print images. Size the picture to 4" x 4". 2. Set up your printer per the instructions on the KraftyBlok™ Image Art. 3. Follow printers’ instructions and print transfer. Allow paper to set 10 to 15 minutes to dry. Trim to size with scissors. 4. Place transfer in a bowl of water and wait approximately 1 minute. DELPHIGLASS.COM

14

Nest Egg Bank 5. Lay the Kraftyblok™ flat on your work area with the opening at the top. Moisten the face of the block. Position the transfer above the surface; roll a ½" of the backing paper away from the top layer of the Image Art transfer (the decal). Line up the Image Art transfer on the surface. Take extra care when sliding the image as they are delicate and can tear easily. Gently slide the Image Art transfer from the backing paper onto the surface using a finger to smooth the decal as you peel away from the backing paper. 6. Gently pat and smooth the Image Art transfer with a moist paper towel eliminating air pockets and wrinkles. 7. Allow to dry overnight. 8. Use a clear acrylic sealer specifically made for sealing decals onto glass. Mask off around the transfer; this will prevent overspray from getting on the rest of your project. 9. Spray the sealer according to the manufacturer’s directions and allow it to dry. 10. G lue the eggs and the glass bird into the nest. Remove the plastic stopper from the KraftyBlok™ and set it on the work surface. Glue the nest to the stopper. 11. Fold the 1" ribbon over ½" and glue it next to the opening. Wrap the ribbon around the block and fold the other end under ½" and glue it next to the hole. Repeat this process with the ½" ribbon over the 1" ribbon. 12. Put the stopper back on top of the block and your bank is complete.

Peace Bird Pin 7. Carefully set the base with glass inside the microwave and cover with kiln lid. Fuse in a 1200-watt microwave at 50% for 2 minutes; 80% at 1 minute; 30 seconds. If using a microwave with a lower wattage, increase the power percentage but keep time consistent. PLEASE NOTE: All microwave and kiln combinations will have different firing patterns. Be sure to take careful notes and log all fusing times for future use. 8. After time has expired, open microwave and, using Hot Mitts, carefully lift the lid enough to inspect the fusing process. Glass is fused when the edges are nicely rounded. If necessary, continue to microwave at 15-second increments until desired results are achieved. 9. Remove kiln from microwave using the Hot Mitts and place on a heat resistant surface. Cool the kiln for at least 30 minutes WITH THE LID ON. CAUTION: Removing the lid or peeking under the lid during the cooling stage may result in your piece cracking. Glass remains hot for a long time - handle with great care. 10.When glass has completely cooled remove from kiln and place on a work surface. 11. Cut around the Word Art™ “peace” decal and place it in a bowl of water (preferably distilled) for approximately 30 seconds. Slide the backing-paper away from the decal so the decal rests against the glass. The decal should slide off backing-paper easily; if not, let it soak longer. Use a paper towel to pat the moisture from the decal and glass. Should air bubbles appear, push them out with your finger. Allow it to dry completely. 12. Remove the lid from the Fuseworks™ Kiln and discard used kiln paper. Cut a 2" x 2" piece of kiln paper and place it on the kiln base. 13.Lay the glass with the decal face up in the center of the kiln paper. 14.Carefully set the base with glass inside the microwave. Cover base and glass with kiln lid. 15. If using a 1200-watt microwave, fuse at 50% power for 2 minutes. Heat again, at 80% for 1 minute and 30 seconds. If using a microwave with a lower wattage, increase the time to 2 minutes and 30 seconds. PLEASE NOTE: All microwave and kiln combinations will have different firing patterns. Be sure to take careful notes and log all fusing times for future use. 16. When time has expired, open microwave and, using Hot Mitts, carefully lift the lid enough to inspect the fusing process. Check your glass, if the decal appears as a white silhouette; continue fusing at 100%, adding an additional 15 seconds to the time until the decal looses the white appearance. When you are able to see the color and definition of the decal, the fusing process is complete. Remove kiln from microwave using the Hot Mitts and place on a heat resistant surface. Cool the kiln on a heat resistant surface for at least 30 to 40 minutes WITH THE LID ON. CAUTION: Removing the lid or peeking under the lid during the cooling will result in your piece cracking. Glass remains hot for a long time handle with great caution. Cool the glass completely. 17.Once cooled, glue the pin back to the back of the bird and allow it to dry. DELPHIGLASS.COM
