event at Boca Strikes for Emily Rachel Levine Foundation

The Emily Rachel Levine Family Foundation will hold its second annual bowl-a-thon fundraises on February 8, 2015 at Strikes in Boca Raton from noon to 3 pm. Founded in late 2013, the Foundation, has begun to make a difference in the community and in the lives of promising young women in need. Its first fund raising event was in February 2014 with a highly successful bowl-a-thon that drew large support from the community at large. This was followed up with a barbeque event sponsored by Whole Foods Boca Raton and a three month promotion tied to donations for shopping bags at the store’s cashiers. The foundations’ profile in the community has grown as a result of these events and through its personal outreach and presence on Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

B “Emy’s Promise, works to bridge the gap between obstacle and opportunity by focusing on young women in foster care and those just aging out of the system. The lack of a stable home environment has a devastating effect on children who face enormous hardships when taken away from their families through no fault of their own, “ said Fran Levine Co-Founder and Executive Director of the foundation. “We have also identified our first two recipients of financial aid. By David DiPino The Pineapple Staff Writer During the holiday season, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) received a donor gift of $16 million from the Schmidt Family Foundation which will be used to enhance the studentathlete experience at the Boca Raton campus. According to the FAU Athletic Department, the Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence will play a central role to elevate FAU’s academic standing and will benefit students in all academic programs, including those not associated with athletic programs. Longtime FAU supporter Dick Schmidt (’70, MBA, accounting) said the Foundation hopes the $16 million gift will be transformative, meaning it’s not only for FAU but for the Boca Raton campus and the South Florida region. “The Foundation believes Florida Atlantic University – our university right here in Boca Raton – is poised for greatness,” said Schmidt. “As a community, we understand that to compete at the highest levels, in and out of the classroom, students must have access to premier facilities.” The $16 million donation from the Schmidt Family Foundation is the largest in FAU’s 53-year history. The money will go toward a $50 million training center which will include an indoor practice field for the FAU Owls football team, training center for its sports teams across 19 NCAA sanctioned sports, strength and conditioning Continued on page 6
