Minor hockey teams raising money for seniors project

A couple of South Delta Minor Association (SDMHA) teams are doing their part to help build a better community for local seniors.

The SDMHA U8 Oilers and the U11 Rep A1 Storm will be playing a special exhibition game on Sunday, Feb 26 at the Ladner Leisure Centre as a fundraising event that will see all proceeds donated to KinVillage’s New Day Program for Older Adults (DPOA)

“Our goal is to thank the people who, through their past contributions, have made it possible for us to live and play in the best community in the Lower Mainland,” explained Rick Albus, one of the event organizers “KinVillage is home to a large group of those people and they are undertaking the task of creating a new community for their residents We hope that our exhibition game will help raise awareness of what they are trying to accomplish”

The game will get underway at 12:45 p m and there will be a number of additional skill competitions as well

The city’s first responders, including Delta Police, Delta Fire and BC Ambulance services will have representatives at the game to greet spectators. There will also be a couple of surprise celebrity appearances

Funds will be raised through a 50/50 draw plus a raffle that will include Vancouver Canucks tickets and other great prizes

KinVillage is raising $5 million for its DPOA project, which will benefit those who need it most

“Donations like these will go directly towards purchasing new furniture, fitness equipment, flooring, open chef’s kitchen, music therapy, games and essential clinical equipment,” explained KinVillage’s Kristen Thomas. “The New Day Program is not capital funded, but the North Court building is funded by BC Housing These donations will provide our older adults with the resources and support they need while also helping them to remain independent and active This program also gives caregivers and loved ones the respite and help they so desperately need

Delta skating teams win medals in Richmond

It was a couple of podium finishes for Delta Skating Club’s Solar Ice synchronized team at the recent Winterskate competition at Minoru Arenas in Richmond

Solar Ice delivered gold and bronze medal performances. The team includes: Cynthina Bao, Josephine Li, Olivia Zhao, Ishaan Subramanian, Rainny Ren, Blake Trenkel, Kelvin Zhang, Jayden Zhang, and Parker Zang They are coached by Jackie Christoff.

The team features skaters ranging between the ages of five of nine of all skating ability
