such as public transit or biking. Solar Cooking International was promoting the use of solar cooking techniques, especially in developing countries. The City of Stockton’s Water Conservation Program and Pacific Gas & Electric were giving tips on how to use less water and power, respectively.
Copy Editor The Associated Student Body Government has extended the deadline to submit applications to run for office from last Friday, April 23, to today. If interested in a position, applications are due to the Student Services Office in Shima 101 no later than 2 p.m. Every year students of Delta College vote for who will represent them in college meetings. This makes voting critical because a council of 17 members represents over 20,000 students. They are the voice to serve students and make school a convenient and enjoyable place to be educated. During the 2008-2009 elections, only 240 votes were cast. In the following school year, the votes nearly tripled to 890 votes. “Although more students are voting, it still isn’t enough,” said current ASBG President Patrice Burke. “This year we are anxious to see if we can triple the votes again.” Voting begins Tuesday, May 11 and ends the next day. ASBG plans to gain more votes by trying to get as many students aware and involved as possible. This year strategies such as word of mouth, fliers, campus wide e-mail, and events are expected to bring in more votes than the previous election season. Third-year student Euzcil Castaneto plans on making this election his first time voting. “I never knew much about ASBG at first, and I never really was interested. After reading it in the Collegian about their involvement, I began to see their importance.” This semester, a new requirement must be fulfilled before becoming an eligible candidate. A consistent enrollment has increased to nine units from six. Candidates must also maintain a 2.5 GPA. These minimal changes have not altered the firm decision for some to rerun for office. Mark Smith, current senator of college community relations, is running for vice president alongside Patrice Burke, the current and rerunning president. “I’m running for Vice President because I would like to have more influence on the board to help students more broadly,” said Smith. Other students are planning a return to the committee after taking a short break. Students Brian Ratto and Sean Reilly have been active in various clubs around campus for years now. Reilly has held many positions on the ASBG

The competition provides an opportunity for the studio arts majors to receive recognition with awards that are donated by community members. Murrel Monroe, 19, won the Eric Hitt Memorial Award and said, “My graphics teacher told me about this and it’s my dream to have my art work at a large gallery.”
