Enjoy a weekend filled with food, fun AppleFest weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3 and 4, will be filled with fun, food, activity, fundraisers, music and lots and lots of apples. From the first alarm sounding for the Five Alarm Chili Cook-off at the fire house on Thursday, until the final chords of music fade away into the leafy canopy of Cedaredge Town Park on Sunday afternoon, the 38th annual AppleFest will have something for everyone. Here are just a few highlights: • The Surface Creek Valley Lions Club will host its traditional cookout in town park serving summertime fare from the cookout grill. Consider having lunch there and doing a big favor to the all the community projects the Lions contribute to. • Local orchards will be featured in town park with bags and boxes of their famous local produce. • Surface Creek Seniors will have their annual baked goods sale next door to the chamber office on Saturday. • Pioneer Town will be the locus for antique cars and tractors, AppleF-

est parking, and also for breakfast and lunch on Saturday. • The wine and beer garden will feature adult beverages provided by local businesses. The refreshments are made from local produce. The garden will be located next to the park tennis courts. • There will be dozens and dozens of booth spaces, almost 200, offering merchandise, crafts, food, free information and the chance to support local causes via raffles. • Look for the apple crate logo designating the crafters and aristans in the “local row” between the chamber office and Grand Mesa Drive, on both sides of West Main Street. About 40 local vendors have signed up. • Many local businesses, including ones on Main Street, are also open during AppleFest and are eager, as always, to serve their customers’ needs. For complete information on the events taking place, check in with the Cedaredge Area Chamber of Commerce’s booth. It will be located next to the tennis courts and beer garden in town park.

AppleFest is site of photowalk Cedaredge AppleFest is a Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk site Saturday, Oct. 3, from noon to 2 p.m. Photographers are meeting at the Cedaredge Chamber steps on Main Street at 11:45. The walk route will be around and in the town park. Pictures taken during the designated time can be entered online in the Cedaredge site. Photographers (any age and level of expertise) can pre-register online at kelbyone.com/ photowalk. Contact Rae-Ann Simmons with questions: rae-anns@live.com.

Stuff the outhouse There will be plenty of good, clean fun at the third annual Outhouse Stuffin’ contest at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pondy’s patio beer garden, behind the lounge. The event is sponsored by Double J Disposal and Recycling of Austin. Using a totally clean, fully sanitized and newly dedicated for-event-useonly “porta potty” unit, teams of more than a dozen contestants (18 years old or older) will be “pitted” against each other to see which can stuff the most people into an outhouse in under two minutes. At the two-minute mark, the door will be closed and must stay closed for ten full seconds. There will be a $100 cash prize for the winning team. The business end of the outhouse unit has been permanently sealed, so stashing members downstairs to boost the final count won’t be possible, and isn’t allowed, anyway. Come in to the chamber office on Main Street, or call the chamber at 856-6961 for more information. Or just be sure you and your team are at the Pondy at 2 p.m.

Pick up books at bargain prices According to the Friends of the Cedaredge Public Library, there will be somewhere around 20,000 individual titles offered for sale at bargain prices during the annual Friends of The Cedaredge Library’s AppleFest Book Sale this year. As always, the sale which is one of the most popular draws will take place at the Lions Pavilion at Town Park. Every category of book will be avail-

able, all lined up in sections for easy browsing. This year there will be great offerings of large print books and of children’s books. And every child accompanied by an adult at the sale will receive a free book as a gift from the Friends as an encouragement to begin reading early in life and to keep reading often.

Prices will range from $1 for quality, gently read hardback books to a mere $.25 for some small children’s books. The sale will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and run until 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Friends will host their famous “Bag o’ Books” final day sale. Four dollars will get you all the books you are able to stuff into a shopping bag.

Fire up your taste buds for chili It’s time to get your entry ready for the 14th annual 5-Alarm Chili Cookoff in Cedaredge. The popular event is a fundraiser for Delta County Fire Protection District 3, which serves the entire Surface Creek Valley, including the communities of Cedaredge, Eckert, Cory, Austin and Orchard City. The contest will kick off AppleFest Thursday, Oct. 1. Chili will be served starting at 5 p.m. at the Cedaredge

Fire House. Competing chilies must be delivered to the fire station between 2:30 and 4 p.m. All area residents are encouraged to make a pot of chili. To enter your chili, pre-register with the Cedaredge Area Chamber of Commerce by calling 856-6961. Rules and applications are available at the chamber office, Cedaredge FoodTown or Great Escape. entry fee. Please bring at least a gallon of your favorite red or green chili. The fire house will provide drinks and all the fixings for the chili. Even if you don’t have chili to bring, you are encouraged to attend. There will be plenty to go around. The event is free of charge, but donations will be accepted. This is the only fundraiser held for the fire district. All funds raised will be used to purchase personal protection equipment. If you can’t attend the event, donations can be sent year-round to P.O. Box 804, Cedaredge, CO 81413. For more information, call the Cedaredge Area Chamber of Commerce at 856-6961, which sponsors the fundraiser as a way to thank the firefighting husbands, fathers, sons, uncles and nephews who take time away from their families to keep the community safe.

As a traveling singer/songwriter, Ken says his goal is to become locally known … everywhere. He’s noted for a beautiful, clear voice and articulate guitar accompaniment (Max Biedenharn, Mississippi Coast Magazine). “I’ve come to the realization that I have nothing better to do with the rest of my life,” Ken says. “It’s probably all I’m good for anyway so I’ve just let go the tiller, spread my sails, and will go where the music blows me.” Brad Colerick takes the stage at 1 p.m. The Nebraska-raised, Californiabased songwriter lately finds himself drawn to story songs — traveling tunes dancing with acoustic instruments, and folk ballads painting sepia-toned visions of Southwestern vistas, Mid-

The natural imagery and resilient characters of songs like “Late Winter Snow,” “The Hands of Brad Colerick Time,” and the bluegrassy “Brakeman’s Door,” show that Colerick still identifies strongly with the Midwest. Kirby Kelley returns to the AppleFest stage at 2 p.m. His skills as a slide guitarist set him apart, and are extracted from a myriad of influences that ultimately culminate into a rich gumbo of blues-based musical soul food. His soulful vocals are set deeply in the origins of the blues and are the perfect springboard for his virtuosity as a guitarist.

Rick Stockton, Helen Highwater and Harry Knipe have evolved into a more compact unit, called simply The Scones. Performing as a trio with acoustic guitar, banjo, bass and drums, they describe their music as “rockin’ & rollin’ Americana.” All three members of the group are accomplished singers and the group’s sound, centered around the songs written by guitarist Rick Stockton, are alive with harmony. Last but not least is Nathan McEuen, a veteran performer who has appeared three times on the Grand Ole Opry, American Idol (with Steve Martin) and The Tonight Show. His songs can be heard on XM/Sirius satellite radio, iTunes, and Music City Roots. “For All The Good - The McEuen Sessions” charted to a #1 spot on Amazon.com’s Americana chart. His grand musical adventure continues Sunday afternoon. Expect some special guests to join him to wrap up AppleFest 2015.

FFA alumni host pancake breakfast Cedaredge High School’s high-energy, part-of-everything Future Farmers of America chapter will be the beneficiary of AppleFest’s all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast being held on both Saturday and Sunday this year. People can enjoy a hearty breakfast at the Masonic Hall beginning at 7:30 a.m. and running until to 10:30 a.m. both days. In addition to the all-you-can-eat pancakes, there will be ham, coffee

and apple juice from Red Mountain Ranches. The event is hosted by the Cedaredge FFA Alumni Association. Proceeds support the Cedaredge FFA chapter in its regular programs, special activities, and in providing scholarships for graduating chapter members. There is no better way to help keep a great youth group going all year long than by joining with the FFA Alumni Association for breakfast.
