Participation Process Designer and Trainer Susan Guy, Scottish Participatory Initiatives

Background As the population of West Lothian’s older people grows so will the need and demand for resources. The view of West Lothian’s

older people are of paramount importance to ensure that resources are directed appropriately to meet the identified need as voiced by the service users.

“...the population of West Lothian is predicted to rise by 5% by 2011, by 10% in 2017 and by 22% by 2031 when the projected population will be 202,114.” West Lothian Council, 2009

Introduction Voluntary Sector Gateway West Lothian commissioned Scottish Participatory Initiatives to design and deliver a Participatory Appraisal Community Consultation training process in January 2013. This consultation training aimed to build upon a very successful Participatory Appraisal (PA) consultation project the previous year called Spring Forward and to achieve the new objectives for the Consulting Older People Project (COPP). Twenty one local volunteers were recruited ranging in age between 16 and 75. They came together to review PA principles and to be trained in a PA process designed to achieve COPP consultation objectives.

Please see www.voluntarysectorgateway.org for a description of the training methodology and a downloadable version of the data. The team worked throughout West Lothian meeting people aged 65+ where ever they could be found e.g. shops, day care centres, lunch clubs, coffee mornings, senior citizen clubs, churches, sheltered housing and care homes, shopping centres, neighbourhood networks and organisations that had an older client group. The survey was also made available online.

Project Aims The aim of this project was to gather the views and ideas of people age 65+ living in West Lothian to get a better understanding about what they like or don’t like about where they live and what they feel will help them to maintain their independence now and in the future.

To reach people living in each postcode area in West Lothian

Summary Two thousand people aged 65+ were asked what they thought about living in West Lothian now and what they felt would assist them to maintain their independence in the future. The team worked out and about in West Lothian and in 105 venues to reach as many people as possible over a 3 month period. This map shows the number of participants by area.
