President’s Message Currie RFC v Glasgow Hawks Saturday 11 September 2010 I would like to welcome Chairman Allan Mackintosh, players, committee members and supporters to Malleny Park this afternoon for the game against Glasgow Hawks. The last time we played Hawks was on Saturday 8th May at Burnbrae where we won the championship, since then our form has slipped in the new season, whereas Hawks are sitting top of the league with a maximum 15 points from the opening 3 games. If we have aspirations to retain the title this season this is a must win game for us after our very poor start to the league campaign. Last week’s game against Heriots at Golden Acre was very similar to the games against Melrose and Dundee, where we gave away possession far too easily, defended poorly at times and lacked the cutting thrust in attack. Ally the coaching team and the players are working very hard at training to sort out the early season gremlins that are in the squad. On Saturday September 25th the club is having its inaugural past players lunch as part of the club’s 40th celebrations at Malleny; tickets are £20 with a start time at 11.45 am, a three course lunch being served at 12.30, followed by the match at 3.00pm against B,Muir . This is an ideal opportunity for past players to meet and reminisce on past times at this great club and also to catch up with what has been going on. If you would like to attend please contact Gordon Stewart on 0131 449 4859, bookings will not be confirmed until payment has been made. Tickets are going fast and we have past players from as far as Perth Australia coming over for the lunch. It promises to be a great day out; so be there if possible. The membership tickets are available to

be picked up behind the Bar so please collect them as soon as possible. Please remember when watching from the touchline that it is not only the officials who make the occasional mistake but players and spectators are known to get it wrong at times as well. So please show respect to our match officials today. Enjoy the game and see you in the club house afterwards to discuss the game over a beer or two.

President

View From The Stand Names not Numbers? A few seasons ago, the most successful Club in the history of Scottish Rugby Football, Hawick RFC, was deemed to have an advantage over other rugby clubs. The word ‘cheating’ was even used by some as the canny ‘Greens’ ran only one top flight Club side. The majority of their weekly first team selection was taken from the Town’s junior teams that operated in this hotbed of the sport. If the keen, ambitious player did not make the Mansfield Park squad they returned to their junior club with the determined intention of impressing the selectors to ensure their quick return to the senior team. There didn’t appear to be a problem with this sensible practical procedure until the junior teams desired more meaningful competitive league fixtures, rather than local derby matches that had been their bread and butter since the sport had taken a hold in the locality over one hundred years previously, and at which their tribal culture thrived; even Hawick’s junior clubs could now show the Nation what they could do! Of course the problems were soon to become apparent; flood the junior team with stars for critical matches and watch the team march through the league setup or reap success in cup competitions; the cry of foul play was heard! It is only now that some in the game are realising that the Borderers’ foresight had a positive dimension and is a type of ‘blueprint’ for the professional or semi-professional game. The system was locally popular and it produced sustained success and is now proving to be a way to progress consistently the quality and skills of those playing the game; particularly at the upper level in the Scottish Premier League Division One. Throughout the season drafted profession players, academy players and senior age group players are either available to the P1 clubs, or withheld at the behest of the games professional administrators. Most agree that it is better to have these players involved at top flight club matches rather than kicking their heels on the touchline at Murrayfield or Firhill. Recently Currie lost the services of Tom Brown to Edinburgh for their away warm-up match at

Bath, and several others have been withheld, quite rightly, because of niggling injuries that a few seasons ago may not have not prevented them from turning out when only 90% fit. The true rugby enthusiast understands the situation and would rather see these ‘A’ class players, when available, than not at all; it enhances the game, increases spectator numbers and aids player fitness and skill. The practice also adds that extra something to the club’s senior squad. The regular club guys are playing with those on brink of, or actually in, the full professional setup. However, there are dilemmas for the club coach who has to keep his squad happy. The enthusiastic ‘team’ player, with ambition, can become disillusioned if they yo-yo in and out of the first team squad! Some would prefer to play regularly for a team in the lower leagues where the emphasis is very much on ‘team’ effort. Before leagues and the professional era, many of the big clubs in UK rugby held on to their quality players by running an ‘extra first’ team or ‘A’ team. We can all remember playing against these sides that could be studded with internationalists who, for whatever reason, were not selected for the first fifteen on that particular Saturday afternoon. Also, there were the second, third and other teams that were not numbered but named. In my experience these club sides had the most success. It didn’t matter if you were selected for the Tigers, Cubs or Penguins it was all part of the rugby club and the Tigers were not referred to as a numerically lower order team. In the community the Tigers had status especially if they were on a winning run. Perhaps the Scottish Premiership clubs would benefit from naming all their lower order teams rather than giving them a number? There could be more commitment and a different attitude when playing for Currie Crusaders or Currie Crocodiles, rather than turning out for a second or third fifteen! The views expressed are entirely those of the writer, and do not represent the policy or views of Currie Rugby Football Club.

CURRIE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB SEASON 2010/11 A BRIEF HISTORY OF CURRIE The Club sprang to life in October 1970 in the Weavers Knowe pub in Currie when a group of rugby players under the founding President, Bob Kirkwood, started playing social at Currie High School with the support of the Head Teacher, Ronnie Paul. In 1971, the Club began playing competitive rugby in Division 2 of the Edinburgh District League and early success saw the Club was promoted to Division 1 in the 1976/77 and into National Division 7 two years later in season 1979/80. The Clubhouse at Malleny Park opened in the same year with a match against the Co-optimists. During the 1980s, the Club made rapid progress up the National Leagues to arrive in Division 1 in season 1989/90. A season back in Division 2 in 1994 was a hiccup with an immediate return to Division 1 the following season and we have remained in the top division since then. The rapid progress led to the Club’s success in winning the Championship in season 2006/07 under the coaching of Ally Donaldson and Graham Hogg contributing to the coaching set-up and Andy Adam being the successful captain. We will all remember the trophy being presented to Andy by Frank Hadden in atrocious conditions at Malleny following a win over near neighbours Watsonians. The success of last season, of course, topped that and sets a high standard for future performance for Currie. The Club is proud of its achievements in its short forty year life and it owes its success to the many members who have contributed time, money and effort for their love of the sport of rugby and the playing of it in a small suburb on the western outskirts of the Capital. I have mentioned only a few here but the diehard Currie supporter will be able to add many a name to this brief list. CLUB ACHIEVEMENTS SEASON 2009/2010 Well, we did it, we won the Premier Division 1 Championship again, the most sought after

prize in Scottish club rugby. The entertaining and clinical brand of rugby gained many plaudits and to have amassed 101 points with 952 for and 318 against was an incredible achievement. The new and the professional players introduced at the start of the season blended in perfectly with the existing squad and all played their role in the success. Success was, of course, not confined to the 1st XV and the 2nd XV coaches Boyd Lumsden and John MacDonald developed a team that secured promotion to the Reserve League Division 1. The spirit in the 2nds is tremendous and manager Max Downie, captain Mike Erskine and the rest of the team did very well. Neil “Smiler” Bruce led the 3rd XV to win the 3rd XV league and once again there is a great spirit amongst the players. Congratulations also go to Sean Scott, Bob Ormiston, Digger Donaldson and the Colts team on their terrific performance during the season. Not only did they win the National U18 cup but they finished runners up in the league. In the Youth Section, the U15s won the National Under-15 Cup at Murrayfield and also won their league. The Under-16s reached the quarterfinal of the Bowl in what was a very closely fought contest and also won their league. The S2 team continued through very difficult times and the S1s who were unbeaten all season. In the Club’s Mini Section, the various age grade levels managed a staggering twelve tournament wins and thirteen runners-up positions in various club tournaments across Scotland with the P7s achieving the most successes. The Club has one of the largest Youth Sections in the country and this reflects the commitment of the coaches and parents and their relationship with the Club’s Youth Development Officer, Gavin Sharp. Gavin promoting rugby at Currie and Balerno High Schools and all of the cluster primaries and has developed links with Harmeny and Woodlands. He has also created significant interest from girls at the High Schools, all of which goes to demonstrate that, here at Malleny, rugby really is for everyone.
